[opensuse-project] Decision made - openFATE feature 306967, KDE default

Hi all, the topic of a "default desktop" was raised in July as a feature[1] in our openFATE feature tracking system by a community member, and it was a subject of a lively debate within openFATE and on the openSUSE Project mailing list[2]. The default desktop is an issue that many openSUSE users and contributors are passionate about. After consideration of the project discussion I discussed the feature request further with the openSUSE Board and other leaders within the openSUSE project and came to the decision to follow the request: we will default the radio button to KDE in the DVD installer. Therefore, with openSUSE 11.2 release, the KDE desktop will be installed if the user accepts the default setting. Users can also choose the GNOME desktop at this stage. We want to make clear that both desktops are considered equal citizens within the openSUSE Project, and this will not have any impact on the quality of the GNOME desktop within openSUSE. GNOME will continue to be offered as a top- level installation choice, and we will continue to strive to provide the best GNOME and KDE desktop experience. Thanks to everyone for conducting the conversation in a professional and courteous manner and for the quality of feedback we've received. This shows the strength of our community, and it's good to know we can address the tough issues head on and remain focused on the project goals. Hi, I updated my scripts to rescan the last 8 weeks of apache logs for 11.2 data (it took less than 3 days - we're talking 15G of compressed apache that needs to be evaluated and my poor workstation is doing alot of other stuff :) http://en.opensuse.org/Statistics now has preliminary 11.2 data (I will reset them when 11.2 is out, for now the goal is to test the statistics - I found already smaller problems caused by aria2c now having a longer user agent) Anyway, what we see is that there are around 1000 new factory installations per week and that's great - we can assume some do fresh installations into VMs, but the number still indicates a lot of factory users. And 11.1 is still growing, which is also good - as 11.2 will still take some time (and that will also mean that many will not switch to 11.2 as they just found the time to update to 11.1 :) But http://ktown.kde.org/~coolo/repos.png implies that the 11.1 hype is over, we reached again a limit we had before the 11.1 release of IPs accessing our servers (every IP counts only counts once for the oldest product). Then again, the traffic always goes down in summers (both the nothern and the southern hemisphere summer - some call the second summer christmas, but that is politically incorrect I guess :) The week in march when download.o.o was down (and I miss 60 hours of logs), had only half the IPs, so this is a neat reminder that dialup users make it impossible to guess how many users there are. We see on average 5 IPs pro cookie. So there are between 80.000 and 1.000.000 11.1 users - any more concrete number is only a guess I'm afraid. http://jspaleta.livejournal.com/42464.html claims their user base is 115% of the sum of total IPs for fedora. That again would give you 6,5 Million openSUSE 11.1 users and 9,2 Million users of 11.0 - And live cds are still a mistery - in 8 weeks there were only 9 live installations found, but that maybe because people do not do updates in these live installations. I have no other explanation atm, but that mistery is the reason I do this 11.2 logs parsing that early. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I believe that we should take the opportunity of meeting in real life to also organize a key signing party at the openSUSE Conference. Unfortunately, I'm too busy to coordinate it, which is a bit of work. Typically, it requires everyone with a GPG/PGP key to send their fingerprint to the coordinator _before_ the event, and to have their key on a key server too. The coordinator then stops accepting key fingerprints a few days before the event, puts together a list of all the fingerprints along with the respective name and email address of each person the key belongs to, and puts that list on the web. All the participants (who have submitted their key's fingerprint) then print out that list and bring it with them to the conference. We'll then have to take an hour or so to check each other's fingerprint as well as each person's ID (ID, driver license, passport, whatever). Then, when we're home, we sign the public keys and mark them as trusted in our keyring, and upload that information to the key servers again. [opensuse-project] Question related to Distributed package and updates distribution System

Hi, I was going through the openSUSE GSOC 2009 projects list when I came upon the last project on the list - Distributed package and updates distribution System , basically about using a p2p system to do distributed package management. I am interested in doing this, but isn't there already things like apt-p2p out there which is a good enough solution. So do you want to basically port apt-p2p to openSUSE or make an entirely new solution from scratch ? I didn't know where exactly to post this, so I am posting here in the most general mailing list for developers. The openSUSE Project is pleased to announce its second confirmed keynote for the first-ever openSUSE Conference[1]. Our closing keynote will be delivered by Gianugo Rabellino, Chief Executive Officer of Sourcesense[2] and member of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). Rabellino serves as Vice President of the Apache XML Project Management Committee, is a committer on several ASF projects including Cocoon, Xindice, and Jackrabbit, as well as mentor of a number of projects currently in development at the ASF Incubator. Rabellino's keynote, "Open Development in the trenches: a decade at the Apache Software Foundation" will provide a "look behind the scenes" at the Apache Software Foundation's 10 years of open source leadership. The opening keynote will be given by Leslie Hawthorn of Google. Leslie is a program manager for Google’s Open Source Programs Office, and community manager for the Google Summer of Code. The topic of the keynote is "Mentoring for Fun and Profit," and the full description can be found on the openSUSE Conference Web site. [opensuse-project] Report #1 OpenSUSE LTS/openSLE (Long summary)

Hello, Many of us have been thinking about this for years... openFATE #306982: Create an open SLES https://features.opensuse.org/306982 really started the ball rolling on this idea and gave it life. I am reporting back the significant points from the new ML created. To sum things up... We need a set of guidelines that must be followed. These should include... URL's for the Guidelines we should/must reference are as follows.. openSUSE http://en.opensuse.org/Packaging Fedora https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Guidelines We need to define a set of guidelines for either project we choose. These guidelines with be used and need to be reveiwed by someone with legal knowledge. Once we define these guidelines we will post them as an RFC to the opensuse-project ML. So to sum things up. 1. I see us creating a server OS with long lifetime. 2. Packages have to be 100 % binary compatible with our defined target. Only aberrations with removal of trademarks and or legal reasons are allowed. 3. Every change has to be reproducable and tracked via an available SCM. I personally prefer GIT. We need to make sure we keep in mind using an OBS as the prefered method of doing the task of building and releasing, and other things it provides. This can be local BS or on the OBS. The GIT GSOC project bsgit(*) provided a great front end to the OBS. may assist us in this task. The code finish code has to be made publically available. 4. Every code change to the project has to have a SR and the 3 positive votes accepting it before it is published. (Model after openSUSE Factory). 5. We need legal advice on the setup of the packaging guidelines. (What we have to remove to stay legal, and ... (Not much in the way of legal would be needed for openSUSE LTS) 6. The guidelines should be written down and rpmlint checks made where possible to insure we abide by the guidelines and avoid legal issues. There are basically two choices as the subject reports. 1. openSUSE LTS A longer life spam of openSUSE releases. 2. openSLE(S,D) A binary compatible with SLES/SLED >From all the information gathered from the various contacts openSLED is really not an option. openSUSE and SLED fill this requirement. So there is not need for it. So the group must decide on which of the openSUSE LTS or openSLES they want to do. This is what I have so far on pros and cons for each. openSLE Pro 1. security fixes are already done for the lifetime of the release. 2. Smaller number of rpm's 3. Server oriented without a lot of clutter. 4. All that would be needed is to remove the branding and rebrand it for openSLE. A much smaller task. 5. Binary compatible for SLES. Cons 1. Possiblity of antagonizing the Novell upper management.(Probable) 2. Not the most politically acceptable solution 3. Needs legal advice to conform to legal requirements. 4. Needs a legal entity to control the SLES subscription and have the ability to get the patches to SLES. (Might be considered a pro) 5. May need community provided local BS. openSUSE LTS Pros 1. No real legal issues. 2. The ability to choose just the OSS easily. 3. Large base of openSUSE users. 4. Definitely able to use the OBS. 5. Community driven in all ways. Cons 1. More packages that have to be paired down to a workable number. 2. Community driven in all ways. 3. Do we have enough people we trust to do back ports over the lifetime? 4. Need highly driven members as everything will be on their sholders. 5. I feel there will be more work with openSUSE LTS than with openSLE. It had said time and time again that the openSUSE community is free to create a community supported LTS and Novell will assist and provide the necessary infrastructure but will not help by maintaining any packages. Personally I really doubt there are enough willing and able people in the current community to properly backport e.g. security fixes, drivers for the kernel, and so on. This is why I think the idea of a "cummunity supported LTS" won't work. (or at least will not produce anything "One would want to run on a publice server"). [opensuse-project] openSUSE DE based DVD Images & Drop Live-CDs

Hi, I recently started doing a lot of mark-all-as-read in the opensuse-project mailing list due to the sheer volume. So this may be asked by someone and answered, already. If so, Please excuse me and point me to the right URL of the archive. I will just read from there. Google and GMail search didnt help in locating this myself. A lot has been discussed about the default desktop in the installation media. But why not have DVD images of the entire applications that relate to a single desktop. Kernel, X, OpenOffice, Firefox etc. will remain common. For a pure GNOME/KDE user, LiveCD will not be sufficient with all the packages and [s]he may need other Desktop applications as well. (No more fights between pidgin/empathy/xchat ? monsoon/transmission ? give both). In this way, in the http://software.opensuse.org page, you just have to add a row: GNOME/KDE/BOTH . choosing BOTH will download an image that when installed will pre-select KDE (as per the previous decision). One thing I could see is, it will increase the workload for maintaining, LIVE-CD, Full-DVD, Desktop-DVD. If the download statistics of live-cd are comparably low, we can just ignore it and maintain only DVD images of Live-Desktop-editions. If a person really wants to try Linux and [s]he is ready to download a live-cd, I dont think [s]he will hesitate to download a live-dvd image as well. [opensuse-project] Creating a group of conserned Users and Novell partners/longer life time for openSUSE... (LONG POST)

Hello, With the annoucement today. http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-announce/2009-08/msg00009.html that openSUSE is on a 18 month cycle, maybe we need to form a group... The thought is that a possible out come of this group maybe an openSLE which would be like this model fedora->centos->RHEL but for SUSE -SLES openSUSE->openSLE->SLE-| -SLED This is from the end of the project meeting. I hope the boat has not sailed already and it is too late. My thoughts from what I have heard from talks with clients, IRC chats, and misc. WARNING (This is my honest view/perception and is not politically correct) 1. Many small business owners/small companies feel there is a lack of attention to their needs from Novell. That is to say Novell only listens to "Monster Enterprise Clients" Solution: We form a group that combined has equivelant $$$ behind it to warrent attention. 2. Many resent replies from Novell people (although it is just their opinion) through the various mediums treat SMB's and their staff as idiots. It comes off as if it comes from arrogant 20-something know it alls dictating what the community has to do. To quote some CEO's and COO... "The SUSE/Novell people act like a bunch arrogant 20-something ... that treat us and are staff like idiots.) SMB's have to contribute more time/money/resources to keep openSUSE going. (Why should we when we are treated like idiots)? Solution: Better communitcation. Some signs of improvement, but a strong feeling of being dictated, rather than lead" 3. They are really concerned "OpenSUSE distro is moving toward just a desktop Ubunto clone. They are ignoreing what was there bigest strength. Providing a Polished First Class Stable Server with necessary Desktop fetures." Solution: This could be solved by openSLE (A openSUSE centos like clone as refered in the above example). 4. "Tired of hearing we do this for fun, it is not my problem/responsibility, hire a programmer or become one." "Fix it yourself as it is a community distro. The community is not doing enough or is too small." What happens is or feels like the various groups that are part of the community are not fully trusted. What I see/feel/hear is that globally the openSUSE distro is moving to the bottom of the Linux Distro Heap. I am being asked to move to CentOS as it has a longer support window. "Having to update my OS every 2 years is a real pain in the butt! Now it is moving to a 18 month window. I really need to look at something else that meets my needs" Business like to stay as long as they are able to the release. "If it aint broke don't fix it!" "We really need a fall back position. What are your recommendations? Doesn't Novell realize who pays their salaries? What about Ubunto, Debian, Fedora/CentOS, or Solaris, BSDs?" Solution: Have the openSUSE->openSLE->SLES/SLED path available. At some of the event I and others I talk with have attended it is often asked "Why doesn't Novell offer an opneSLE alternitive?" People using the fedora->CentOS->RHEL talk of how many of the business they support move this route to become RHEL customers. I think we (being the SUSE prefered" really would benefit from a similar path. That is why I am trying to somehow get a group organized. So we are able to have our voice heard at the higher levels of Novell. Thanks for reading this. [opensuse-project] Unable to Install cause of too old drivers, due to long release cycles

Dear List, I had the problem that on my server computer the mainboard crashed. So I had to buy a new one and tried to use the old CPU, Memory, Grapik and Storage. As the Intel 775 Socket is widely known it was easy to find a suitable board, but the old chipset wasn't reachable. As I had to buy a new and not a used one, it was ok for me to fetch a modern chipset. But openSuSE 11,1 was unable to boot, because cdrom or storage weren't excessible( not found). This was due to the new chipset. I use SuSe for many year's as a user and not so far as an admin. That's why I was unable to solve the problem. As I had no ideas I used other distro's. All of them had the same problem, since there came a new release. After a new release I was able to boot and successfully install the other distro's. As SuSestudio was launched I hoped my dreams come through and I will be able to build just a small one for myself for installation. But it was not possible, even the new builded one's crashed. For the opensuse studio I need an "updated" Kernel & driver just to boot modern hardware. After that I will be able to come along. My intension is to give a distribution a new "Kernel & Driver" without testing and verifying the hole buch of software. The endusersoftware and features should kept untouched.So the release has the same usability/features. To get it clear: These "Kernel"-releases are only for installation issues during boot and absolutely not for any software problem. For software issues is the updater ok and does a good work (in my opinion). Hi, this is my first public message to openSUSE project, and that means first I'd like to introduce myself: My name is Roland Haidl aka rhaidl, and I started to work in SUSE nearly ten years ago. In that time I managed the SUSE documentation, usability, design etc. After Novell having bought SUSE I took over several other management task. Now, while Novell/OPS engineering adopted to a new strategy regarding openSUSE, we decided that the people, who Novell dedicated to work in the openSUSE project, come under my responsibility. For me that is awesome and something new - as it is in general. Why, since we already had Novell people working for openSUSE in the past? Well, the new thing that with this step Novell decided to intensify its openSUSE sponsorship. Now we have a group of people that is exclusively dedicated to the openSUSE project. It is not longer the "when time is left, please work in the openSUSE project" thing we often had before, we now have the singular situation to have a team of more than 10 experts in Novell to only work on openSUSE community topics. This is the Novell "openSUSE Team", and it is there to be a part of the community and make it easier for people to join in, enjoy and contribute. We (speaking as part of the Novell management) learned to trust the community, and, as a result of this, want to support the project even more. For proof let's see how the team will work. Of course the team also has reponsibilities, that is basically the openSUSE distribution and the healthy growth of the project. Both challenges will and can only be done in a strong community with YOU and I hope you appreciate the existance of the new team as much as I do. The people working in the team are all well known since they already worked a lot in the community. I leave it up to the team to introduce itself. As the lead of the team we nominated Klaas Freitag, who is an experienced manager on the one hand and a community guy on the other. Henne Vogelsang takes over the role as project manager openSUSE, and Stephan Kulow will continue to be the release manager for the next openSUSE distribution. After looking though the weekly news, I do have to say that I am disappointed that no status, comments, etc have been given on the 'KDE as default' issue. This after all the number one openfate item and the lack of updates from the team is concerning to say the least. There is a clear and decisive trend to the issue from the community but it seems the ones that have final say are hoping if nothing is said that the issue will disappear. Hello, In the GNOME team, we currently trying to come up with a way to set the bugowner so that the GNOME Core Team gets notified when bugreports are created. The only way I can see this be done, is to create a Novell account, an email account and then add rules to forward incoming emails to people in the Core Team. Although possible, it is a bit inconvenient to have the above dummy accounts. It'd be nice if we: * In users.o.o, the Team Owner, could create a group that gets assigned an email address (ie, gnome-maintainers(a)opensuse.org), and add members to this group. The group is basically a mailinglist * In OBS, groups created in users.o.o can be used as bugowner I thought of creating a FATE request for it, but it touches users.o.o, OBS and the mailinglist infrastructure so not sure if we need 1 or 3 requests for it. After reading all emails and having many discussions about the default desktop topic, I've wrote up the following draft proposal (at the end of my long email) and propose to enact it. Note, let's keep have the following important questions to keep in mind: * What is a fair treatment all involved parties that do great work? * What is the best for openSUSE? What will help openSUSE grow? Preamble There are many decisions that a Linux distribution does for its users, e.g. packages installed by default and version of packages, and also which of these decisions can be changed by the user or where the distribution limits the user or makes it difficult for the user to decide. openSUSE's installation tries to ask the user as little as possible and uses good heuristics e.g. on how to partition a system. It also comes with an automatic configuration which sets up the system in a default way. Nevertheless a couple of questions are asked during installation - and some of these are considered difficult questions for a user. The decision about e.g. default editor (emacs, vi, joe,...) or default filesystem are decisions that the distribution does on behalf of the user - even while most users have a preference here. Users expect from a distribution to adjust their system, e.g. change the default editor, in an easy way. The success of a distribution depends on both how it serves the needs of its current users but also on how it addresses new Linux users. While there is friendly competition between different desktops, the real competition is between Open Source desktop environment and closed source ones - and therefore the question of default desktop should be considered on what's best for new Linux users. Many think that openSUSE should decide for new users on a default desktop - and on the other hand make it easy for users to choose a different one or install additional ones. A decision on the desktop question has to look not only on which desktop is the default but also what this means for this desktop and the other desktops. The Desktop Policy gives such a framework. Making one default the desktop will not change the way that Novell sponsors the openSUSE community project. There have been comments that making a decision for a default will help both the GNOME and KDE development teams to give users a better desktop experience. I'm inviting those to stand up to their comments and really help out - openSUSE as a community distribution will only get a desktop that is as good as the development community will make it. Desktop Policy 0. The following text uses GNOME and KDE in alphabetical order. These rules apply to development of openSUSE only, not for any other Novell products. 1. Both GNOME and KDE are first class desktops in openSUSE: neither is technically superior to the other. openSUSE should be known as the distribution with the best GNOME desktop and the best KDE desktop! 2. We make it easy to choose between these two desktops during installation, install both of them - or install others as well. 3. On the relevant screen during installation the most popular desktop is preselected, the desktops are listed in alphabetical order. 4. This screen will explain that both GNOME and KDE are first class desktops and the default is based on popularity. 5. Let's sit together at the openSUSE conference and decide what both GNOME and KDE beeing first-class desktops signifies and how all desktop development teams can work together. openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 5 (M5) is now available for download[1]. It includes several updates, new features, bugfixes, and other improvements. This milestone includes KDE 4.3 final, a kernel built specifically for desktop systems, and beta 1 of OpenOffice.org 3.1.1. This is a Milestone Release, one of several that lead up to the 11.2 final release in November. It may not be suitable for production systems, but is ready for contributors who want to help with testing and development for 11.2. Changes Since openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 4 =========================================== Lots of changes since the M4 release! This release is built with GCC 4.4.1, and debug packages are generated for each sub-package. It also includes many updated packages and a few new packages, including: * Linux kernel 2.6.31-rc4 * Xen 3.4.1 RC10 * GNOME 2.27.5 * PackageKit 0.5 * Apache 2.2.12 * Choqok 0.6.1 * VirtualBox 3.0.2 A more complete list can be found on the wiki[2] and an updated list of Factory packages can be found on DistroWatch[3]. 11.2 is looking fantastic. Workaround: reduce video memory size or switch to first console and back (default: right Ctrl-F1, right Ctrl-F7) * Bug #529113[7]: and Bug #482749[8]: kdesu does not work (for example, starting YaST), work-around: 'su -c "unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS;yast2"' * Bug #528397[9]: X server might hang with some video drivers (vesa, intel) in runlevel 5 before the KDM logon occurs. This is my first post to -project, so before I dive in, a quick introduction: I wrote and maintain the Qt /and/ GTK+ versions of Transmission, and switch Dekstops every few weeks. I sympathise with both sides -- as both a user and a developer -- and have been reading this thread with interest. I think two unchecked radiobuttons are both fair, defensible ideas. I'm sure everyone can see why GNOME people would prefer GNOME to go first. I'm sure everyone can see why KDE people would prefer KDE to go first. Jean's Belgian solution seems like a great compromise suggestion to me. Some GNOME users' (such as Jim's) concession saying "put KDE at the top" seems like an earnest attempt to keep the peace, and to keep balance. Lubos and a couple of others keep slapping down those suggestions based on reasoning that seems shaky to me. The argument is that users don't have to choose bash vs zsh, or emacs vs vim, and so on; therefore, making users choose between KDE and GNOME is inherently biased to GNOME. But that's apples and oranges -- choosing a Desktop also chooses a raft of default applications, such as (say) KTorrent or Monsoon. That's a *huge* choice compared to a shell or MUA. Hello, I think after all the talk, Using AJ's Proposal with check boxes works... Summary. 1. Modify Screnn with Text that makes it clear that both are equally supported DE. 2. Change to check Boxes with KDE listed first and preselected. 3. Make it clear that the ordering is based on... This means order may change in the future, but that ordering is based On most popular of the community. a) This makes it clear that the most popular DE will always be listed first. b) This avoids any political statements. c) Treats both DE's equally. 4. This allows a new user to just click next. 5. Make links that if the network is setup, the user is able to go to the various DE's home page to learn more to make the choice. 6. Possible small walk through the desktops to demostate them. Personally I never liked having to make a choice here. I always have to go to the advanced modes and select the patterns I really want. As I have to have both to appease the various people using the machine. I hope this will allow us to really focus on what is in 11.2 and stop wasting time and bandwidth rehashing the same old things. There are pretty many pros and cons and even more people with their opinion about the feature [1]I'd like to summarize what has been said in the discussion in the feature itself and during this week's openSUSE project meeting. Unfortunately the only sure thing is whatever decision is taken - it will be wrong for some. This is why, at this time, we have no default - because openSUSE has strong GNOME and KDE implementations, we offer them side-by-side as equals. And we made 2 years ago on opensuse-project the decision that we stay with "no default" desktop. So what do we have so far? - a feature request [1] from one of the KDE e.V. board members - the feature asks to make KDE default. Reason for that, is to make openSUSE more simple for newbies and to make openSUSE the best KDE distribution around - Through the discussion in the feature I'd translate that feature into put the radio button as default to KDE on the desktop selection screen during installation instead of today's status where everybody needs to make a choice between - the highest rated feature in openFATE [2] until today - a majority of people supporting this feature (currently approx. 90% pro, 1% neutral, 9% against) What I clearly see as pro is: - listening to our KDE community we may gain more KDE contributors. What I suggest? Due to upcoming feature freeze for openSUSE 11.2 we have only the possibility to default the radio button to KDE. But this is IMO more a diplomatic solution which doesn't help much anybody. We should give the feature one or two more weeks to evolve and need to do the decision for openSUSE 11.2 by mid of August. Some other observations I have with respect about this feature: - inviting people through blogs, web pages, mailing lists or twitter to vote has potential to set the credibility of the voting system at risk as people not involved with openSUSE or not using openSUSE express their thoughts - the feature shows the success of opening up the openSUSE project. I thought we can make an DowloadSite (1-Klick) for needed Software. Another Tab includes the API RReferences from KDE4, GNOME and other Stuff. In the Tab Learning we can include some HowTo's for Programming. That's just an thought. Maybe you like it... [opensuse-project] Default desktop: the Belgian solution

In Belgium we have often this kind of endless discussions but not about desktops but about languages. As you know there are three officials languages (Dutch, French and German) and amongst them two main ones (Dutch and French). A bit like our desktop, Xfce being the German language ;-) Some National Institutions have their name in two languages like the Opera in Brussels "La Monnaie" (FR) or "De Munt" (NL). To make everyone happy they've decided for the marketing and other public communications to use one year the naming "De Munt - La Monnaie" and the one after "La Monnaie - De Munt" and so on for years. As some KDE users feel unhappy that the Gnome desktop appears first on the list during the installation let me propose this: - For 11.2 lets place KDE first - For 11.3 lets place Gnome first - For 12.0 lets place KDE first and so on... And if another Desktop (Moblin, Xfce?) becomes mainstream, let see later. Of course, none of them should be preselected. My experience with firends is that if they don't know, they click on the first one. Hope that it can help positively to put an end to this never ending discussion. Hello, please excuse me, but as a political scientist I have to butt in here and say my piece. ;-) The problem here is a misapprehension of what a majority vote can and can not do. The question at hand (default desktop) is very comparable to a conflict between two rivaling ethnicities living in the same country. As democratic decision-making does and should not take into account ethnicity, there will always be core-issues that _must_remain_unresolved_ if such a country is to exist for any length of time. These are issues which directly correlate to contradicting interests of one or the other ethnic community (i.e. zero-sum games). If one of the ethnic communities (as it usually is the case) is bigger than the other one it could easily decide such critical issues continuously to their advantage and to the disadvantage of the smaller community. A majority decision here would not be the result of a decision-making process or bargaining, which are prerequisite to any meaningful democratic decision, but would simply represent the bigger party pushing its interests at the expense of the smaller party, which would be detrimental to the system as a whole. Here purely democratric decision-making fails. A majority vote will in the end result in disintegrating the country. Majority decisions are NOT a fair solution to solve problems involving two persistent interest groups. The belief that voting is a fair solution to EVERY problem is simply wrong; the theory of democracy suggests otherwise. Reliance on majority votes alone is 'not democratic' in our modern understanding of the word because when we talk about democracy we don't mean majority vote but a system which in addition to that also respects the right of the individual and the interests of minorities. This is why our political systems are NOT democracies but 'liberal democracies' (liberalism is a necessary component that prevents the abuse of majority influence). Coming back to my analogy of two ethnicities living in the same country, there are two ways such a situation can go: a) a split of the country, which brings a whole new set of problems b) ways of decision making other than majority-based are set in place and unresolvable questions (=zero-sum games) are made a taboo These are also the options for the opensuse-distribution, translating into: a) discontinue the DVD-releases and only put out Live-CDs, thus avoiding the issue (a mild kind of split, as I don't think anybody would really want 'KopenSUSE' and 'GopenSUSE'...) b) treat both communities equally by NOT defaulting to a specific desktop (the zero-sum game is made a taboo) and there is always c) declare it someone else's problem (as in 'let Andreas decide' ;)) 'c)' is not really an option because the new decision maker be it a maintainer of whoever - would face the same problems and consequences. But with a vote on a) or b) I think we would have it down to two meaningful, non-destructive options which don't align with the borders of the two 'camps'. a) would mean KDE fans get their petty little victory, as they don't have to see GNOME at the top of that alphabetic list anymore. For GNOME fans nothing would change. The decision would go at the expense of those serious users who actually NEED the DVDs. b) would mean everyone has to either accept that the openSUSE community as a whole is more important than their feelings about a specific desktop, or they'd have to adjust their perception as to view the Live-CD releases as the main form of distro-release. Perhaps we could make that easier for them by hiding the DVD download-option somewhere unobtrusive. These are IMHO the only options that could realistically be voted upon without making the vote a zero-sum game - because the options to decide on don't represent the persistent interests of the interest groups that decide on it (option A: KDE, option B: GNOME). Again, you CAN'T make default desktop choice a majority vote and call it fair. I am frankly quite amazed by the nonchalance with which a KDE-team member has brought up this explosive issue on the very questionable pretext that a default desktop would bring less confusion and attract more developers, with utter disregard to what this aggravating discussion would entail for the community. The correct way to go about it would have been starting a discussion on this ML. Bringing this up topic as a 'feature request' represents a serious abuse of openFATE IMHO and should have been rejected outright. The gains of this whole discussion are close to zero, the damage has already been done and could potentially be serious if the majority of KDE-proponents on the ML continues to push its agenda. I feel sad about it, I would have expected the openSUSE community to behave in a more adult fashion. Hi, Unfortunately I didn't archive this information, but I am sure I read a meeting minute, in the last few weeks, that indicated someone was looking at getting openSUSE to run on Amazon's EC2.... openFATE only shows a request to include eucalyptus in 11.2 Without reviving the woes of previous false starts, I do have some questions: 1) Is it intended that the current state-of-affairs persist, i.e. only private/3rd-party SLES images are available, or will there be publicly (community) available images of openSUSE? 2) Is there intended to be something like Ubuntu's EC2 beta 'community', e.g. their mail list and launchpad? 3) Are there specific reasons that SLES can run on EC2 but not openSUSE? Anything the community can do to change this? Would appreciate any insights anyone can offer. I can agree with this proposal with alphatically order and preselecting the most popular. It could also be horizontally presented, even better. The proposition contructive. Making both "preselected" and "orderd by popularity" is too much. The order can also, as I suggested in a mail, change from on to another release, without impacting the preselection. The whole "KDE Default" discussion raises also the question on how we do make decisions and what is the purpose of openFATE. My take on this is: openSUSE in general uses the technically best solution - and this contains both features and stability - and where that's not feasible, the most popular solution is used. With openFATE, an evaluation of features is done and features get marked as usefull - and then we need to decide which of these many features get implemented. And here voting will help to reflect popularity. The original thread has grown quite a lot over the weekend, 150+ mails, and also parts of it is rubbish (like suggesting that by default both KDE and GNOME are installed, which somehow magically solves the problem of the default selection), so I suppose it will be a pain to process for those reading it only now after the weekend. Therefore I'd like to present an attempt at a summary of the KDE view of the issue. As interpreted by me, of course, since different people still have slightly different positions, but I hope it at least gives an overview to those who do not want to dig in the whole thread. It might be useful if somebody did the same for the GNOME side (and maybe 3rd party, if considered useful too). So: The openFATE request says "make KDE the default desktop" and it doesn't request anything else. It doesn't request anything happening with GNOME, in fact it explicitly mentions that it should remain supported as a choice. It can be interpreted in slightly different ways, my personal interpretation is that this can be achieved by just preselecting KDE in the installation dialog, nothing more. I consider it to be the minimum acceptable for the request and at the same time I believe it can bring the benefits described. An important point that many people here fail to realize that this is not asking for granting a special priviledge to KDE. In fact, it is asking for removing a special priviledge that makes many in the KDE community feel that KDE is treated unequally in openSUSE. In all other cases, when there is a clear preference, it is selected as a default, sometimes not even offering the user an easy choice. In this case, however, while KDE is the clear choice in the openSUSE community, it is not treated the same like in other cases. Instead, GNOME is given a priviledge that a preference must be explicitly expressed here, and this priviledge, to my knowledge, is not given to any other openSUSE component. No other non-default browser, mailer, shell, filesystem, etc. has this luxury. This is interpreted by the KDE community as a message from openSUSE that it values GNOME more, that GNOME is forcibly pushed into openSUSE and that KDE is not equally welcome in openSUSE. The openFATE request, in practice, asks for removing this GNOME priviledge and fair treating of all openSUSE components. This should also make it obvious that the current situation is not considered correct. Since now openSUSE positions itself as an open community distribution, refusing this openFATE request would also be an action that would further stress the perception that the KDE community is not as welcome in openSUSE as the GNOME community and that openSUSE can again choose to hurt the KDE majority despite the obvious preference. Therefore, just as there is the risk that aknowledging KDE's position in openSUSE by accepting the openFATE request would have a negative impact on the GNOME community, there is also the risk that continuing to treat GNOME specially in openSUSE would have a negative impact on the larger KDE community, already treated negatively. For similar reasons I believe that the pros/cons analysis in the original thread is partially incorrect, as it assumes that the current situation is not problematic and keeping the status quo does not cause any harm, or that resolving the situation requires removing choices. And yes, I believe that just changing the radio button would be a sufficient message from openSUSE that KDE is not considered less important than GNOME, likely resulting in increased KDE interest and involvement with openSUSE that could even lead to openSUSE becoming an outstanding KDE distribution, without having to negatively affect GNOME in the process. So, once again, the openFATE request is not about granting KDE any special advantage, nor it requests doing anything with GNOME other than removing this advantage that is considered unjust. It is about signalling the KDE community that they are not treated as 2nd class citizens in openSUSE, which would prevent further alienating of the KDE community and allow increase KDE involvement in openSUSE, currently hampered by the perception that this is not as welcome as GNOME involvement. And while it is considered that focusing openSUSE more on KDE would bring openSUSE more advantages, it is not necessary for KDE, nor any removal of choice of GNOME in openSUSE. This is my interpretation of the openFATE request and the position of the KDE community on this issue and what would be the minimum acceptable to make them actually feel welcome also by openSUSE acts and not just words. As I said, different people have slightly different views, so there are certainly people who have stronger views on this or would disagree with me somewhere (in fact, my own personal opinion here is not exactly in line with this, so am I not just pushing my personal agenda). I however hope this gives an overview and explains some things that many people seem to misunderstand. If you want to have a complete view, of course, enjoy reading the whole thread. In the worst case I've at least saved you reading my mails there :). PS: For those who still don't undestand how the current situation can be considered unfair, an attempt at an analogy: There is an art gallery, showing and selling pictures of two artists. One of them is considerably more popular than the other, thus clearly the gallery benefits more from this artist. Yet the gallery pays both of them the same. That is maybe equal, but it is very unfair. My personal conspiration theory is, that SLES/SLED defaulted to GNOME because of US business users, and Novell wanted to give wider testing to openSUSE GNOME by pushing back KDE under the cover of political correctness. Which of course brought more harm than good, but easy to defend in the name of "free choice". The rest of the components have a reasonable default (MTA, text editor, etc.), which can easily be changed, if someone has different need than the majority of the users (like I use sendmail, joe, thunderbird, etc.). The same way the radio button for KDE should be pre selected, which represents the majority of openSUSE users. Hi, As some people discuss 11.0 numbers, I would like to share some numbers about 11.1 users. So I queried the download.o.o logs for the last 3 days (friday to sunday) to see what 11.1 repos are refreshed. Please note that if you run the update applet and haven't set the repo to autorefresh=no, it will see a hit in the log files, so this is fairly uptodate. I wanted to do it for a longer period to update the "Community Repos" list, but that will take a while, so I wanted to share what I have. These are uniqe IPs refreshing the 11.1 repo of listed projects. The check in front of the number says if it's in the current list of community repos, I think there is a bias for those. As a longtime KDE user, and using SuSE/openSuse for more years than I can remember, I have only one thing to say about this debate... Hands down... This is the Dumbest issue I've seen debated by the opensuse community. And quite frankly I'm tired of getting notifications on my BB every few minutes on the topic.
