[opensuse-project] 1. Is openSUSE a community without a community manager ?

(I wrote a few mails about openSUSE. You are free to trash them or to "not read", but of course, I secretely ;-) hope not.) So "is openSUSE a community without a community manager?" is my first "key project question", as Joss was hired for that a few years ago, did a lot of articles, marketing, noise for and around openSUSE, he "did the job" (2011 was a good marketing year, no?) then Augustin was hired too did try to "reorganize openSUSE community with less success, he left ? we guess (even if he is still managing openSUSE group on linkedin) then ??? no information on the project list ? no formal information (on what was decided) And now ? Some of us have met Doug ... he was not introduced, wasn't he. as far as I heard, he was not hired as a community manager, did he ? in fact, we (member/contributors ... non SUSE employees) don't know who is "responsible" for what ? (about "SUSE ppl working for openSUSE" - since the openSUSE booster team is no more ... ?) is there a wiki page somewhere ? explaining who (from SUSE) is working for openSUSE distribution or collaborating to openSUSE project with openSUSE "non-SUSE contributors" ? who do what ? Comment : it's a difficult mission (challenge?) to manage a community as openSUSE but it's very pretentious to believe that a community can grow and go over challenges without a "community manager" (boosting, listening, communicating, helping, animating) it should be an important question for the present and future : is openSUSE definitely a community without a community manager ? (I wrote a few mails about openSUSE. You are free to trash them or to "not read", but of course, I secretely ;-) hope not.) At OSC14, I heard Ancor and Izabel saying that we have to thank the TSP when we get some- which is of course ABSOLUTELY LOGICAL ! "Thanks to SUSE to help openSUSE contributors." so what ? For sure many of you have done some openSUSE booth somewhere. We do that for freedom, for the distribution, to share our values and for all the reasons given in another thread (snip snip) - of course we do not do it to be thanked But ... travelling, hotel, staying 3-4-5 or more on a booth, answering, showing, sharing ... it's very interesting but exhausting too + days given to openSUSE (and not family, vacation, work) so : For the next "TSP talk", would it be possible to hear : (OK it's one of my dreams) "Thanks to SUSE to help openSUSE contributors AND thanks to contributors/geekos who give time and energy to do booth everywhere since 2009." AND ... Please could we (you? who?) increase TSP to 100 % ( I'm not talking about OSC, nor about myself of course, but about all future contributions as booths, openSUSE-talks, mini-summit etc) if we (as an openSUSE community) wish to go on having volonteers in the future - doing booths and talks, it would be great to increase TSP to 100 % for volonteers giving already a lot (as 5 working days for example-which is not NOTHING). (and the day we'll have so much booth that TSP dont have enought money to support travel and hotel, then we'll see how to crowdfund the "TSP system") OpenSUSE community need more & more booth/talks all around the world. Time is money, most of us have less time (after work), only a few can "work + write on this list" so, when having to choose (fixing bugs or talking about community) in 98 % of the cases in a geeks population, programming will win and project will be delayed. to resume : - openSUSE distribution is technically almost GREAT !! - is openSUSE project & community great too ? if answer is not YEAHHHHHHHHH, then : - how to adjust the balance ? - what would we (each of us) suggest (small change for a big impact) ? - what could simply (*) be done / adopted / changed ? (**) (*) simply is not rewrite the wiki or change the website or change the world (but why not ...) As we have lots of discussions going on, rather than continue to high jack the other thread lets just add another log to the fire. Let me start out with a proclamation about oSC: The intent of the openSUSE Conference (oSC) is/was to be an inward looking conference. Focused on the openSUSE community and project the idea is/was that a significant number of contributors gather once a year to discuss the current state of the project, make plans for future direction, innovate, start new initiatives, socialize face to face, and bond. Everyone is welcome to contribute and attend the event, but it is not targeted to be an outreach conference with a focus on "finding" new contributors. The conference should have ample of time to mentor those that attend that are new or relatively new to openSUSE and want to be more involved. We can of course argue over this proclamation/charter but I will consider it as basis for what is to come. Lets look at the facts: - - While in the end we had a good turn out at oSC15, it took a herculean effort to get there and I would say we did not meet the goal of having "..a significant number of contributors gather..". - - The most recent oSCs required an unbelievable effort by a very small group of people. Each year we got lucky and found someone who was willing to take on the organization. But effectively we are in "burn mode", i.e. once someone organized the event they are completely and utterly burned out. This is simply not sustainable. + Arguments about this point will probably range anywhere from personality issues to "I am too far away to help" - - Not having "a significant number of contributors gather" at oSC makes it impossible to achieve the other goals: + discuss the current state of the project + make plans for future direction + start new initiatives The glaring example here is that the "Booth box" session at oSC15 was attended by 2 people, both of whom were already familiar with the current state and how we got there etc. Making it impossible to have a discussion about what works and what doesn't and how we can do better going forward. So what's next? - From my perspective we are failing at "fulfilling the charter of oSC". Yes there are a million reasons why contributors cannot come, Travel is expensive, it is too far away, it is over a weekend, one needs to take vacation, bad timing, ..... Given that everyone can probably give at least 5 reasons why oSC attendance is at the bottom of their list, we have no sustainable way of organizing oSC, and we are failing the charter (as defined above) I think it is fair to ask a few questions: Staring with the most provocative one on purpose: - - Should the effort be made to continue oSC past oSC16? + Consider that no proposals were received for the call for location of oSC16 + Everyone that says "yes we should", be prepared to help - - Should we strive to change the charter/nature of oSC and brand it more as a "FOSS conference organized by the openSUSE project" + Even this will require us to figure out how we get more people involved in the organization. Burning people out year after year to organize oSC is not really a good approach - - How can we come up with a model that provides a more sustainable organizational effort? - - What would it take to raise oSC attendance closer to the top of your list, given the other reasons listed above plus your own are still present? + Do we need a rock star act for the party? + More beer, less beer, .....? - - What prevents people from contributing to the organization of oSC? Obviously a rather incomplete list of questions, but it is a start. Anyway, as it stands at this point (business as usual) a call for location would go out towards the end of this year for oSC17. This will probably go unanswered adn thus a few of us will be left sending out direct e-mail to someone who might be willing to take on the task. Unless we do something about it oSC might die all by itself without having this discussion. Thus, rather than having a death by apathy, lets figure out if we are all comfortable with this, i.e. oSC dying, or if collectively we have the energy to save the event and we can come up with a plan to do so. However to tend more towards the higher end lets assume we have 10 candidates for this rough estimation. Given that one wants to make an educated decision it is probably fair to say that a voter wants to read the information candidates make available about themselves, e-mail and platform page. For the most part this is usually relatively short, thus lets estimate that it will take about 15 minutes to read through the information. With 10 candidates that would be a time investment of 2.5 hours. For arguments sake one could say that it takes 1/2 hour to read about each candidate which then amount to a 5 hour time investment. From beginning to end our campaigning plus voting time period is probably on the order of 4 weeks or more. With the basic assumptions above it is reasonably straight forward to calculate that the time investment is roughly 5 to 6 minutes a day over the voting/campaigning period, or double that if we assume it takes 30 minutes to read about each candidate. The voting process itself is also no more than a 5 minute affair. Thus my question is, is it too much for members to spend 5 or 10 minutes a day over a period of 4 weeks to figure out who the member thinks should be on the board? So, lets see how this estimation holds up. Maybe I am way off and trying to decide turns out to be a big time sink for people. That would possibly warrant a change in approach. Maybe candidates need to have a podcast as their platform so people can listen to it in the cars or whenever reading and typing is not an option. > I don't like this What do you mean with "this"? [opensuse-project] Why are we here

The actual question to be discussed below is slightly different then the "Why are we here" in the title, but as philosophical and possibly even more important to us. In this talk https://events.opensuse.org/conference/osc15/proposal/650 it was discussed, that communication is important and that more important than _what_ we are doing and _how_ we are doing it, is _why_ we are doing it. And it is important to put this "why" answer first. All the other stuff is just minor details which follows. Which brings us back to the important question: Why are we here, or more precisely _Why are we contributing to free/libre/open source software_ (the openSUSE project and upstream software in our case) I already asked a few people and got several good reasons: 1) Because I want to help FLOSS to make the world a better place. (related: Because it makes me proud, knowing that many people using it for all kinds of tasks) 2) Because software should be free (since I have already written it, distributing it is free, it is useful to other people and they are even contibuting (ideas and some patches) back) 3) Because I want to use the best (in some of the dimensions of best) software (related: because I do not want to use proprietary software crap) 4) Because I can make it to do what I want. 5) Because there is a Challenge (while doing something that is useful and cool) 6) Because it is Fun Note: The numbering above is meant to help reference the items and not as a ranking.
