I was asked by a new formed Linux Magazine to look for some great tools of the openSUSE project so that I can write some articles about them. I thought about OBS and WebYaST. I let someone else from the Greek community to make the OBS article due to his experience with that tool and I start looking for more information about it today and I found the webYaST user guide that was published today!!! I read it and it is a really great guide. Now I am thinking in making a Greek team to translate it so my question is when I will finish the translation where can I publish it? And if its possible to get informed about the changes that might become so that I can upgrade the translated guide. Hello mates, we, openSUSE Weekly News (OWN) team are now facing license and copyright issues. There are some things which are not clear to us. Although most of the issues affect just OWN, I think those issues should be shared by whole project. Sascha, editor in chief of OWN have proposed that we should publish OWN under CC BY-SA 3.0 license [1]. @Sascha Please explain the reason why you think it is better to publish OWN under that license including: * What kind of benefits can we expect by applying CC BY-SA 3.0 license? * Why should we apply CC BY-SA 3.0 instead of other similar licenses? <Explanation from Sascha> The CC BY-SA helps us to give a clear License with clear Restriction. If we publishing under CC BY-SA or another CC License everyone can use our Weekly News, write anything from his content, and republish it. And BTW: Ubuntu and Fedora Newsletters are under CC BY-SA too. BTW2: But this is set on the bottom of every Site inside the normal Site. The GFDL which is used by openSUSE is a good License too. But it is needed to paste the whole License inside every new produce. If we're using CC then is a Link enough. </Explanation from Sascha> What are the points that are not yet clear enough? # Please do not confound copyright with license. * For contents on Wiki, license is clearly specified: "All content is made available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License version 1.2 ("GFDL") unless expressly indicated otherwise."[2] But how about contents on other *.opensuse.org sites? * Can we include contents, of which licenses aren't clearly mentioned, in OWN and publish under CC BY-SA 3.0 license? Or, should we "expressly indicate otherwise" the license of each article, even if the article is from news.o.o, lizards.o.o, lists.o.o and planet.o.o? (If we should do so, we have to "expressly indicate otherwise" the license of almost every article, because most of the articles now on OWN are from those sites or external news sites or private blogs. But if 90% of the contents are not under CC BY-SA or any other clear license, do we really need to publish OWN under that license?) * Which country's copyright law and guidelines should we refer to? <from Sascha> In Germany we have the "Citiation Law", who says, that everyone can paste from every written document into a new one. But it can't be used for the whole document, just for a citiation (Maybe 3 Paragraphs or so...) Exists any similar Law in other Countries too? </from Sascha> * Can current drawing (citation) from external sites or personal blogs be considered "legitimate"? (This is closely related to the above question.) - As far as I refer to Japanese copyright law and guidelines, our current style doesn't meet the requirements for "legitimate quotation". - For example, if AuthorA wrote an article titled "About B" on SiteC that says "I love cats. In particular, I love kittens, because they are so cute! But some don't like cats." ... -- Our current style: "SiteC/AutherA: About B" - "I love cats. In particular, I love kittens, because they are so cute! (...)" cannot be considered legitimate quotation. This style may be considered "reprint" and if there is a mention "all rights reserved" on the original SiteC, we are not allowed to reprint except otherwise specially permitted. --- And this means, that we cannot "reprint" articles from *.opensuse.org except Wiki (contents on Wiki are published under GFDL), because we can read the mention "© 2010 Novell, Inc. All rights reserved." on the bottom of each page on those sites. -- If we introduce the original article like: "SiteC/AutherA: About B" - In this article, AuthorA is making out "I love cats. In particular, I love kittens, because they are so cute! (...)". I totally agree. I think kitten is the most cutest animal on earth! -- this can be considered legitimate quotation. # Therefore, Ubuntu people don't just "copy & paste" parts of articles from external sites in their Weekly News. When they introduce an article from external site, they are going to write an introductory article by themselves and include citation from original article in it. * How can we solve these problems? - Can we ask Novell to apply CC BY-SA 3.0 license for every content on *.opensuse.org including Wiki? If that'll be OK, most of the problems will be solved. -- In that case, do we need Contributor License Agreement [3] to explain that all the contributed documents on *.opensuse.org will be published under CC BY-SA 3.0 license? -- But still, how we can deal with articles which are aggregated on planet.o.o wouldn't that clear. Will all the authors accept that their articles will be published under CC BY-SA 3.0 license? * How should we deal with articles from external sites in OWN? Alternatives may be: - We won't introduce articles from external sites anymore. - We will just introduce sites name, authors name, title and link URL with short comment (For example: "In this article, the author explains how to ...") by editors. - When we introduce an article from external site, editor will write an introductory article for that as Gertjan does for Forums section now. (I think this is the best option. But in order to do so, we need much more help.) We need all those points to be clear. Suggestions and proposals are welcome. [opensuse-project] Tumbleweed status & how to promote it

Hi all, I have some questions about Tumbleweed. First of all, I wonder what the status is and will be. If someone enables Tumbleweed on the upcoming 11.4, is it very likely that most packages will be updated or are we still talking about a small subset? Second and related to the first question, to what extend should we promote Tumbleweed? Is it a major 11.4 thing? Can we truly say Tumbleweed is something people can and should use, will it offer a pretty-much-complete rolling- release distro? (notice that this is relevant for our "why openSUSE" talking points at [1]) Third, if the answer to the second point is positive, should we make it easy somehow to enable Tumbleweed? Eg some tickbox on installation or in our package management system? Obviously, I love Tumbleweed - for the slightly-more-experienced linux user and for those who love the latest & greatest it is awesome - and this happens to be a pretty big chunk of our target usergroup :D On a personal note, I also love Tumbleweed because I think rolling-release stuff rocks - I come from Arch and frankly it's the major thing I loved about it. There is room for quite a bit of debate here - take the topic that started this, the expulsion of an openSUSE member for violating the _guiding_ principles. That in itself is very problematic. Wrt time and place, now is as good as any and this list is quite appropriate, albeit in a new thread. Let me start with saying that I think the guiding principles are fine and I don't think they need changing. However, IMHO, they are not formulated in a way that makes it possible to expel someone for not following them. They are worded in terms of "We are ..., we want to ... , we value ...". That's perfectly fine for a set of "guiding principles", but doesn't even come close to e.g. a code of conduct. There is no need to discuss the current "case" any further, but I think we need to ask ourselves this - are the guiding principles really good/clear enough to form the base of someone being expelled? Hi Folks, I am trying to co-coordinate our Facebook presence. At the moment, there are quite a few openSUSE Pages and Groups with many members. If you are administering an openSUSE Page or Group, please get in touch so we can create a master list and know what belongs to whom. To ensure the openSUSE message gets out there, the Marketing team wants to work on a few key groups and pages, so we can help readers find good pages and community, make sure questions are answered, and keep pages spam free. A forgotten page, gathering dust, is not a nice reader experience. Of course there's no problem with having an 'unofficial' page or group! This is community after all! But please send your URL and contact info so we know which page is yours. Hey, my first email to this list. I am the new member, hello to all. "... transparency of the decision making processes, transparency of communication and transparency of work and collaboration processes." this stands in the Guiding principles [1] and is what I want to adress for my openSUSE membership in this email. I obtained some days ago my membership status with the urgent hint to take part in the election of the openSUSE board. Thanks for that. Now it is very hard to fullfill both. I would conclude the election process had to be transparent. But it is not at all. Gnokii was not just a member who was removed, he is a nominated candidate for the board election [2]. The original email "Public statement from the Board on the removal of a member" [3] is misleading and I see it as complete intransparent. I am very sorry to have to conclude the following: The intransparent process of removing a candidates membership by the board is a election manipulation. Removing of a membership account and removing and banning from IRC and thus taking the possibility to defend his position is bulling. Not to mention that there is no formal way to remove a members or candidates by the board itself. I wonder what the board has lead to such a decission. The combination of all this is very strange. Apologyse to those board members, who where in the minority to avoid such a decission. The membership removal is not fair to Gnokii. The candidate removal is not fair to the community and the election manipulation is unfair to the other election candidates. Hi all Sorry, very long mail ahead... (As privacy is pretty sensitive on this matter, please contact the board directly (board(a)opensuse.org) if you have further questions or need clarification, instead of discussing it in public.) As you probably all know by now, the openSUSE Board recently revoked an individual's membership as well as his access to the openSUSE infrastructure. As Community participants are admitted to membership, they agree to abide by the Guiding Principles of the openSUSE Project. One of the responsibilities of the elected members of the Board is to be the guardian of those principles; fostering a positive and pleasant environment for all members of the Community. From time to time the board is obligated to take actions to uphold those principles on behalf of the membership. In doing so, the board acts in a manner to mindfully protect the privacy of all effected parties, including both the offender and those affected by the offensive actions. The privacy of those who were personally affected must also be taken into consideration. After receiving a series of complaints from numerous members of the Community regarding violations of the Guiding Principles by that person over a prolonged period, the board began working to uphold its obligation to the membership by attempting to resolve the conflicts through discussions and mediation with all involved parties and ultimately issuing a warning of possible expulsion. In December, complaints were renewed and the Board felt that despite repeated warnings and discussions, the Board could no longer abide by actions that violated the principles which our Community is built upon. Now, there have been a few points that have been (rightfully) raised by a few people (I'm paraphrasing here ;)): 1) Who said the board has the right to revoke someone's membership ? 2) Isn't it harsh? Wasn't there a better way to deal with it? 3) The timing is very suspicious. 4) It all happened behind closed doors, you should have made it publicly, in a transparent manner (as transparency and openness is also part of the Guiding Principles). 5) Who and/or how to prevent abuse from the board ? 6) Removing the membership would have been enough, why remove the person from the project altogether ? First of all, the Board never had to deal with a situation like this one before, where many attempts of mediation and dialogue didn't result in the person who violated the Guiding Principles understanding the concerns and going back into behavior that is socially acceptable (because that's, in essence, what the Guiding Principles are about). Hence we, as a Community, didn't have any precedence to look for, nor any mistakes we did in the past to improve the process upon. 1) So, yes, indeed, neither the Guiding Principles nor the Board statuses *explicitly* state that the Board may remove someone's membership upon repeated violation of the Guiding Principles nor how it must be dealt with regarding a public record of action (or not). But, as stated in the Guiding Principles, one of the primary missions of the board is to mediate and try to resolve conflicts. When people approach board members and ask us to take action, it is the role of the Board to do so and, unfortunately, if all the constructive attempts to resolve the issue through dialogue fail, the Board have to take the final and non-revocable action of removing that person from the project. We added that point to the members page on the wiki after-the-fact for the purpose of clarification, and if people feel that it is controversial and needs discussion for similar situations in the future, let's have that discussion -- ideally when the new board is in place, after the elections. 2) We, the Board members, hope you trust us as well as the other Community members who have been involved sufficiently to believe us when we say the board would never take such measures without having exercised all the "better ways" to deal with it. The Board always tries to mediate first. And not only once but a lot of times in various forms. If that doesn't help the offender is given a fair warning of the intent to escalate this further and only then, if an offender does not change his behaviour, the Board has to take such extreme measures. 3) The timing, indeed, may seem suspicious. We (Board members) were very aware of that but decided to finalize what we started nevertheless. As said above, the Board had to work on a lot of details like deciding whether a public announcement should be made, draft up an email, let it circulate on the internal board mailing-list to let all the board members have a say, vote, and/or make amendments and so on on the fly. But you have to understand that the Board work by consensus, pretty much in a democratic way: the Board members aren't the borg, they all have their individual opinions, and especially in a matter as important as this one, the Board members obviously wanted everyone on the team to have a chance to agree or disagree. Of course, the Christmas holidays didn't help accelerate the process either. So in the end the Board was obviously unable to draft an earlier letter to inform the Election Committee as well as the openSUSE Community at large of his change of status. We regret the timing but the whole matter had lasted all to long already, especially with regards to the people who have been the repeated victims of that person's behaviour over a very long period of time. 4) Matters such as these can only be handled in private, behind closed doors, only involving the people who are directly concerned. As the Board members want to protect the privacy of the person in question, as well as the privacy of the people who have been the victims of his behaviour, it would have been inappropriate to do so publicly. If you don't think so, just imagine that we make all that in public and an employer or potential future employer googling it up. Not nice. We do not want to harm anyone, and do not want public crucifixions either. Some argued that it could have been done by anonymizing the person's name, as we are doing right now (for the very reasons stated above), but that simply wouldn't have worked over an extensive period of time and with more details than what we're including in this email. Please note that the Board attempted to avoid making a public statement for those exact same reasons, but evidently it is needed at this point, to our deepest regret to the victims involved (again, for the reasons above). 5) The primary tool to prevent individual Board members to take abusive actions is the inherent democratic way the Board functions. Yes, the actions and decisions of the Board are often, if not always, very slow, but that is the price to pay for a democratic approach, where decisions are taken by consensus, with every Board member having a chance to vote and voice her opinion. Attempts of abuse by an individual will be outweighed and prevented by the opinions and votes of the 5 others. The tool to prevent a majority of the Board or even the whole Board from taking abusive actions are the elections. The Election Committee is there to do their best to prevent abuse in the election process itself, and they have -- rightfully so -- voiced their concerns on the timing (as explained above), which we have hopefully cleared up in an email thread with the members of the current Election Committee. The Board is the only elected body of the Community, so for those of you who are openSUSE Members, do exercise your right carefully. You elect the people you trust to do the best for the project and the Community. 6) Unfortunately, only removing the membership status wouldn't have changed anything in this case, as the disruptive and poisonous behaviour was not seen exclusively in situations where membership plays a role. The Board members were (and still are) convinced that we had to remove the person from the project altogether to resolve this issue. Finally, we all respect and are thankful for what that person did for the project, and deeply regret that it had to come to this, but it was really the only option left. Thanks for reading so far. [opensuse-project] Motion: Making a petition as a non-board member

The openSUSE rules do not currently say under what conditions a member, but non-board member can make a motion to the board. Nor under what conditions the board would in turn call on the whole membership to vote on the motion. Associations with formal rules have been in existence long before now. I have adopted the below rule (or bylaw in our case) from a legally recognized association I am a member of. I have changed the wording from the previous motion. I have also updated the support info below to a large extent. === I make a motion that the openSUSE rules be updated to allow for formal member petitioning. A formal petition openly supported by 10 members may be submitted to the board asking for an issue to be voted on by the membership at large. The petition must include the language of the vote to be submitted to the membership. Once submitted to the board, the board must call for a all members vote on the matter addressed in the petition. The vote must be initiated within 10 days of the petition and the vote must close within 30 days. If the matter being voted on concerns an improper sanction or appeal of a sanction, then the sanctioned person must be one of the petitioners. === details I serve on a board. There are times when board / member relationships are very tense. In my experience it is only a small handful of the membership that feels abused. Having the ability to petition for community votes is a way to both provide oversight to the board and to eliminate baseless claims that the board is not responsive to member concerns. Obviously this can make an issue semi-public as all members have to be informed of the issues at hand. If the matter is private or covered by NDA, the board will need to make its case in asking the members to support its decisions (or lack thereof) without violating privacy or NDA. In the case of a specific member's claimed mis-conduct it will likely be unavoidable that potentially private issues will have to be exposed to the membership, thus the portion of the proposed new rule that the specific member must be part of the group of members asking for a all members vote. It is my hope that this rule would rarely be invoked. Further although not addressed by this proposed rule, it is my belief that associations like openSUSE typically have annual meetings and at those annual meetings any member may make a motion and, if seconded, at that time all members present at the meeting vote. The association I am most familiar with uses "Robert's Rules of Order" to conduct these annual meetings. As a openSUSE member and assuming I have the privilege: I make a motion that the openSUSE bylaws be updated to allow for formal member petitioning. And if a formal petition supported by 10 members is submitted to the board, the board must call for a all members vote on the matter addressed in the petition. If the matter concerns an improper sanction or appeal of a sanction, then the sanctioned person must be one of the petitioners. === details I serve on a board. There are 2 aspects of that board that seem relevant to the current sanction discussion: 1) A sanctioned / fined person can request a hearing where they can interact with the board. But only once. We don't do it often and prefer to setup meetings specifically to address the hearing, not handle it as part of out monthly meetings. This could clearly be done via IRC for openSUSE. I gather the disbarred person was given the opportunity to make his/her case to the board via emails, so I think this is equivalent, but a more formal IRC meeting would be even better. 2) A petition signed by 10 of the members can be brought to the board and it must be voted on by the whole! ie. if 10 members disagree with a board action (or lack of action) they can file a petition with the board and the board must call a full all member vote on the issue. Obviously this makes the issue semi-public as all members have to be informed of the issues at hand. I don't recall this type of feature being in the openSUSE rules. In this case, if the disbarred person feels wronged and is willing to have the issue addressed with all openSUSE members included in the communication, then he/she would simply need to get 9 other members to join him/her in petitioning for an open hearing / all members vote. I'd like to ask for feedback. How do you treat your SSD running openSUSE 11.3? By now it is recommended (http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:SSD_discard_%28trim%29_support) to run wiper.sh for discarding free space weekly. This is at least true as long there's no native TRIM-support which is compatible to modern SSDs. openSUSE 11.3 is shipping with hdparm updated to version 9.36. The script /sbin/wiper.sh is included there. Am I the only one experiencing this error: wiper.sh: Linux SATA SSD TRIM utility, version 3.1, by Mark Lord. wiper.sh: This tool is DANGEROUS! Please read and understand wiper.sh: /usr/share/doc/packages/hdparm/README.wiper wiper.sh: before going any further. /usr/sbin/rdev: needed but not found, aborting. How do you deal with it? rdev (as far as I understand) doesn't come with openSUSE anymore. Additionally it does only return the name of the root device "/dev/sdXX". Possible solution: Add the following two lines at line 260 of /sbin/wiper.sh (in diff): 261,262d260 < elif [ "$RDEV" == "" -a `$GAWK '{if ($2 ~ /^\/$/) print $1}' /etc/mtab` != "" ]; then < rootdev=`$GAWK '{if ($2 ~ /^\/$/) print $1}' /etc/mtab` ## openSUSE This will make the script reading root device from /etc/mtab. I only tried to run the script in dry mode. Is there any harm with that solution? Should I go real with it? I guess it's only a minor issue. Btw if it's of any interested: I own a OCZ Vertex 2 Extended. I tried to bring this upstream. But the bug tracker on hdparm.sourceforge.net doesn't look like very much populated... Hi, I read the platforms of all candidates, and I have a few questions :-) I'd appreciate if you could take some time to answer them; it'll help me vote in an informed way. 1) You described various issues you'd like to get fixed and goals you want to achieve. Will you still work on (or help with) those tasks if you're not on the board, or do you think you really need to be on the board for some of those tasks? 2) How much time per week can you secure (approximately) for the board? (I know it will be 0% of your time for some weeks, and much more for some other weeks; I'm interested in the average) 3) Did you attend IRC board meetings already? 4) It's interesting that I see nearly no note about budget/money in platforms. When (not if ;-)) we'll have the Foundation, the board will have to work on a budget. So a few questions about this... 4a) Have you experience with creating/dealing with a budget? 4b) Where will we find money for the Foundation? 4c) What should we use the money for? 5) I do think it'd be useful to have some board-related meeting at FOSDEM. That should help the newly-elected board members to know faster what's happening, and how things work. Will you come to FOSDEM? (I know some people, and that's most probably true for the non-European, will likely not be able to attend; that's not an issue) 7) Do you care more about Free Software or Open Source? Just to be clear: there's no wrong answer. But it helps understand why you contribute to projects like openSUSE. Questions to specific candidates, related to their platform: Chuck: where do you think we could lead, instead of copying? Sebas: what needs to be more transparent in openSUSE? Kostas: do you have examples of "motives" we can give to people so they participate in the project? Peter: leaving you some more time for your platform :-) Henne: not really a question related to your platform, but to your experience on the board. What could be improved in the way the board works as of today? (btw, it's not a way for me to try to get the current board blamed in any way: we all know things can always get improved, and time usually helps with that) Also, can I get a dodo? Hi, right now all the teams spread their meeting results or news flashes to alot of different places, blogs, mailinglists etc. reports(a)suse.de seems to be some suse internal dedicated place to collect team reports, something similar would be nice. IMHO an automatically archived list is a good place, most teams already have some mailreadable form of results of their meetings anyways and it makes it easier to collect that. Using the wiki might not be future proof in case of layoutbreaks, can be seen pretty impressivly here: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:KDE_Meetings It is very easy to add an emailadress as cc instead of remembering which blog to push it to as well, so the overhead is kept low. Also it might start a form of competition for readable output of the teams, we at kde for example usually try to summarize the topics outcome, most bugbot reports just list topic changes, this carries roughly as much information as the meeting announcement... I assume the openSUSE news team might be interested to have something like this, it allows for easier identifying hot spots etc. Any ideas? Hey Geekos, I just finished my election platform and want to share (some of) it with you. To read the whole thing go to http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Board_election_2010_platform_hennevogel I tried to condense this mail to the major points. --------------------------------------------------------------- What I think are the major challenges for the openSUSE Project: --------------------------------------------------------------- Over the past couple of years the whole project has worked tirelessly on bringing everybody to equal footing and making it technically and socially possible to contribute. Making this possible was always the biggest issue on my agenda and still is. [You can find my track record on the wiki] And now that we are nearly there I think that we have the next big battle ahead of us: Making people actually use the power we provide them with. On the code level this works okay'ish: distribution and infrastructure contributions are on the rise but on the project level I see harsh weather ahead. We need to make sure that we as a community organize and stand together and have all hands on deck. Everybody that deeply cares about this project now needs to stand up, take responsibility and carry this project. And that effort is what I think the board needs to lead in the future. [What I deem important day to day tasks for the openSUSE Board you can also find on the wiki] ---------------------------------------------- What I would like the role of the board to be: ---------------------------------------------- I like that the openSUSE Board, by definition of the Guiding Principles, are no dictators but great communicators in the project. We don't dictate we facilitate. Yet we are (somehow) effective. This is something most other project's don't dare to do and I'm proud that we are able to pull this off! Yes it takes sometimes longer, yes it involves discussing everything (sometimes two or 15 times) in our group at length but it's the only way I would like, and feel comfortable with, to be represented as Member. That's how I want the board to continue. ----------------------------------- Why I think you should vote for me: ----------------------------------- 1. I will (continue to) gather people that will take responsibility in this project. 2. I will (continue to) push for an independent openSUSE community including an foundation that is fully controlled by us and that represents our interests. 3. Hello friends! I read an article in the "Kölner-Stadt-Anzeiger" about the CES in Las Vegas and some tablets. So I think, why we don´t distribute openSUSE for Tablets. I mean, KDE for tablets is always there and we can do a lightweight kernel and then we´ve got the system. Firefox and Thunderbird for the internet things and ready is openSUSE Portable. Think on it its already on the weekend in the release week for 11.4, let us use that event for making a big push.
