[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Pavol and I will take the final decision since we are the GSoC admins for openSUSE. Hello people of openSUSE after the longest election period in the history of the project elections ended in a successful way. 237 people voted out of 400 which is a record of participation both in percentage and in actual number. It was the first year we attempted to vote through Helios Voting System and we solved all problems that came to our attention. I must say that although the work of the election committee ends somewhere around here the new elected members have a long way ahead of them and us as the election committee wish them all the best. [opensuse-project] openSUSE mini-summit at LinuxFest NW

If you will be anywhere in the U.S. Pacific NW on April 28th and 29th, please check out linuxfestnorthwest.org and events.opensuse.org. The LFNW schedule is packed. From Friday evening through Sunday, including food and beer Saturday evening (but you have to be registered for that). The original grass-roots FOSSFest. Low-key. Emphasis on content. All free (except for lunch). And we're having an openSUSE mini-summit unconference, hack-a-thon, meet&greet, grip&grin on Sunday. Free stuff. Geeko Stress Relief. For both events, you'll need to get an account and then register. Even if you can't attend the mini-summit in person, it would be helpful to know how much interest there is in the community for doing this kind of regional event. Please have a look and come to Bellingham the last weekend in April if you can. [opensuse-project] Online Bullying Tactics Waste Time

Some may say this is off topic, but I think it is on topic for the Project and for the Mailing Lists: To those who would resort to using my Board candidacy for online bullying tactics to try to silence me when I have a valid point(s), it is not only against the Guiding Principles, but it is a complete waste of time. Let me make it clear. I only offered up my Candidacy for the Board for three reasons: 1) I care about openSUSE and how it is governed; 2) There were only 3 candidates I was aware of who were running for 3 openings on the Board, all of whom would make great Board Members. I offered up my Candidacy (prompted by someone, and no, not knurpht) so that whoever made it on the Board would not simply have made it by acclamation, but would actually win by merit; and 3) I was prompted by someone who I have deep respect for, as I mentioned in #2, but the who is confidential. Personally, I do not really care if I am elected to the Board. All candidates are great prospects for the position, and I will be perfectly happy with any 3 of the candidates that make it, and will be thrilled for them. If I *do* make it, I will -- of course -- dedicate myself to the job and will bust my A.. to do the best job possible, but if not, I have many, many other things I would love to turn my attention to. [opensuse-project] Troubles on Voting

Hello people Just a heads up, If there are people having other troubles on voting other than PEBKAC. If for example are in emeritus status and feel the should not or did not got an email for some other reason please send an email here the next couple of days.We will be able to try and take care of it so that all people who care enough to vote and have the requirements but for some reason were left out to have the chance of doing it. People who already contacted the election committee and got an answer do not need to contact again.
