[opensuse-project] Proposal for adapting the trademark guidelines

We had a couple of discussions in the past about how to improve the openSUSE trademark guidelines (see e.g. http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Trademark_guidelines or https://features.opensuse.org/311039) One of the main issues with the current guidelines is that it's very strict about derivatives, and doesn't easily allow people using openSUSE as a base for their own systems, to keep a visible association with openSUSE. So attached is a proposal how to adapt the trademark guidelines and provide a better solution to this issue. It also contains a few smaller clarifications. It's based on the input I was able to gather from the Wiki, openFATE, mailing lists and some personal feedback. It's a draft, so feedback is welcome. The central change is to allow people to create variants of openSUSE and use a "Based on openSUSE" branding under more liberal conditions than now. We would provide a specific branding for that, which keeps the relation to openSUSE, but is done in a way to not be confused with the branding of the official openSUSE distribution. Technically this would be a set of branding packages, which can be used instead of the default branding of the official distribution. Please let me know, if there is additional feedback on the proposed changes, so we can incorporate that, and then move forward with getting the needed approvals to officially adopt the improved guidelines. In parallel to that we can look into doing the proposed branding packages. I was asked by a new formed Linux Magazine to look for some great tools of the openSUSE project so that I can write some articles about them. I thought about OBS and WebYaST. I let someone else from the Greek community to make the OBS article due to his experience with that tool and I start looking for more information about it today and I found the webYaST user guide that was published today!!! I read it and it is a really great guide. Now I am thinking in making a Greek team to translate it so my question is when I will finish the translation where can I publish it? And if its possible to get informed about the changes that might become so that I can upgrade the translated guide. We're going to remove the openSUSE 11.1 Packman repositories from our primary server and, hence, also our mirrors [1]. If you would like to keep a copy (for whatever reason, as they're unmaintained), make sure to pull the tree BEFORE MONDAY (2011-02-28). The reason, obviously, is that openSUSE 11.1 has gone End-Of-Life since mid-January [2], and as we're restructuring our repositories [3], we do need quite some extra space right now and don't want to put too much of a burden on our mirrors (there are a few rsync mirrors in there too). [opensuse-project] Packman repository switch

As I wrote about [1] a couple of days ago, the Packman team has been busy migrating to a new openSUSE Build Service instance as well as, while we were at it, changing the repository layout [1]. We've been putting quite some steam behind the effort and we finally have reached a point where everything is working great (for us as packagers) and where the most used packages have been added and re-built on our new openSUSE Build Service instance, as well as having been published in our new repositories [2], including on all our mirrors [3]. On Wednesday (2011-03-02), in CET evening, we will delete the old repositories. We will create symbolic links to make the old URLs point to the new repositories (e.g. 11.3 to openSUSE_11.3), in order to make the old URLs still work perfectly fine. But it will also mean that there are a lot of packages that were in the old repositories that are not in the new ones, as we didn't migrate everything yet, and didn't migrate everything on purpose. Indeed, it is also a good opportunity for us to get rid of old cruft which we added many years ago and isn't used by anyone any more, or even anyone in the first place. At the same time, I will change the list of repositories that show up in YaST's "community repositories" module in order to reflect the new layout, with the option of picking only some of our repositories, and not just the "big one" (for details, please refer to [1]). Of course, once performed, I will duly announce it. So if you do run into a package you were used to get from us and which doesn't show up in the Packman repository any more, please let us know by sending us an email to our mailing-list at packman(a)links2linux.de (no need to register first, just send an email to that address, in English or German). Sorry for the inconvenience that move might create, but it will definitely help us because we will hopefully have a little less packages to maintain (because no one is using them), and also make the service a bit swifter for you to use, as there will be less RPM-MD metadata to download on each refresh. The Packman website and repositories are going to be broken and in the works for several days (possibly up to a week) starting tonight at 20:00 CET, during which the following services will not be available, or only sporadically: * the Packman website itself: http://packman.links2linux.org * the Packman repositories, except "Essentials" (see "new repository layout" below) The reason is that we are performing a major migration of our services to * the latest version of the openSUSE Build Service (we were still using an old version) * a new layout of our repositories, to enable a more fine- grained control over what parts of Packman should be used (see below) In order to try to keep a minimum service going during that time, you may use and point people to our new repositories, that already contain the "Essentials" part, which are almost complete with the bare minimum everyone needs (mplayer, vlc, libraries, ...). The URLs for the new repositories are as follows: * http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.3/ * http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.2/ * http://packman.inode.at/suse/Factory/ * http://packman.inode.at/suse/SLE_11/ There are no .repo files there yet, so adding one of these is done as follows: zypper ar -n packman http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.3/ packman (obviously adapt the URL to your openSUSE version) You may also use one of our mirror sites, as they already have our new repositories: ftp://packman.links2linux.de/pub/packman/MIRRORS New repository layout --------------------- As has been announced (including here), we have had a discussion back in December about whether and how we should reorganize the layout of our repositories. Up to now, and for many years, it has always been "one big repository", which had pros and cons: * good: easy to use, just add onr repository and be done with it * good: easy for us to manage * bad: you get everything and the kitchen sink, including packages that are duplications of stuff from other repositories, specifically from build.opensuse.org (which didn't exist when Packman was created), and potential conflicts with those * bad: large metadata files to synchronise (although zypper has become pretty fast at that) We came up with a solution to this, as more and more people requested having split repositories, in order to control what they want to use from Packman: * we will have four repositories instead of one: Essentials, Multimedia, Games and Extras * Essentials will be the bare minimum to get your multimedia experience on openSUSE going (libraries, MPlayer, vlc, ffmpeg, ...) * Multimedia will contain additional applications that are not available for openSUSE or only in a crippled build, such as avidemux, etc... * Games are, well, games, although we will try to move most of what may be hosted on build.opensuse.org to the games project there * Extras is all the rest In order to provide the best of both worlds or, rather, still provide you with the old option of adding everything, we are using a little trick and are running "createrepo" on the top-level directory, which results in having repository metadata that contains all the packages from all the above mentioned repositories without having to duplicate the RPM files on our server. Hence, to make it short and less technical, you can still also use the "old way" too. As an example of what needs to be added to zypper, once the migration is complete and .repo files are available too: * add the Essentials repository: zypper ar -r \ http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.3/Essentials/Essentials.repo * add the "everything" repository: zypper ar -r \ http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.3/packman.repo I will announce our progress on my blog at http://dev-loki.blogspot.com -- which is also aggregated on http://planet.opensuse.org -- and will obviously post another announcement here once our migration is complete. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Custom Distro ideas

Hey, I think we shouldn't have ideas about custom distros listed for GSoC: the ideas themselves are cool, but they're not appropriate for GSoC projects. A GSoC project implies development of code and most of the custom distros ideas are about integrating different components together, in the right way; but not about code. I'm afraid that listing those ideas when we apply might lower our chances of being accepted... Opinions? Never changing page is not the best presentation of wiki and distribution. It doesn't show dynamic of the project which is lately increased few times. Items that never change are used in regular propaganda to bring boredom and force people to migrate elsewhere. The other extreme is too high dynamic of changes that force people to learn basic navigation on every visit and push them to the sites with some predictable elements. I don't know what is absolutely the best, but we can try to have: Left: as is, static list of links - learn once and use many times Center top: very short intro to the project (not necessarily exactly what it is, but catchy few words. Center: news; one to two lines with links to actual articles, images (quality) Right: fast access to the most popular articles which is changing slowly over the time Portal:Distribution ‎(428,440 views) The largest number of visits has page with information about distribution. How people make to this page would be interesting to see how important are links in the Main Page, and how many people used side bar that is available from any page. Package repositories ‎(236,467 views) Obviously people are interested in software, and how to get it. Page is somewhat confusing. It lists repos that are included by default. It has type of repo as basic division (oss, non-oss, debug, source), and openSUSE releases as secondary, while we refer to release as a first in many other places. Using release as base is better as underscores that release should be treated as whole, separate unit, from another release. Portal:11.3 ‎(236,428 views) It looks good. It would be interesting to see how people came to this page. Knowing the path visitors used to find the page should help to improve browsing. Lesser clicks is always wise idea. Additional package repositories ‎(226,989 views) It looks good, but the listing that will list all repos per release would benefit users. It will make life easier for new users that want to add repos to the release at hand. Derivatives ‎(222,337 views) It is interesting how popular is "something different". Sort of the topics is a bit strange, needs some thinking and fitting in the wiki visitor workflow. "Build your own" as a first topic? That should be logical step if you can't find anything that fits you. SDB:Live USB stick ‎(208,982 views) It is obvious that "Live USB stick" is very popular method to install distro. Price drop for USB memory sticks, and no problem booting with recent computers makes them attractive replacement for many users. Problem is that page is quite hard to read after many additions. Improvements should be split between "SUSE Studio Image Writer" for windows, making all iso files hybrid and the article itself. SDB:Download help ‎(138,494 views) It looks good, the only improvement is to give explicit link to http://software.opensuse.org very early on the page. Portal:Documentation ‎(125,758 views) Yes, people look for paperwork to read. It needs a bit of maintenance, otherwise looks good. openSUSE:Browse ‎(113,149 views) Popularity of this page tells that many visitors want overview. They either got lost, think there is something missing. Page should be named "Site map" and openSUSE:Browse should be redirect for compatibility with old-en.opensuse.org. Of course that there is much more material for thoughts below the first 10 pages. For instance: 11. Screenshots (112,501 views) should give very good impression as many are looking there to find out will they install it or not. 16. Wine ( http://en.opensuse.org/Wine ) with 96,705 views, indicates that many users are trying to run windows applications. Migration instructions are on position 160. http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_migrate_from_Windows which tells they are not source of information that leads to Wine page. http://en.opensuse.org/Application_equivalents is No. 119. so that is not the source of interest for Wine too. Hello mates, we, openSUSE Weekly News (OWN) team are now facing license and copyright issues. There are some things which are not clear to us. Although most of the issues affect just OWN, I think those issues should be shared by whole project. Sascha, editor in chief of OWN have proposed that we should publish OWN under CC BY-SA 3.0 license [1]. @Sascha Please explain the reason why you think it is better to publish OWN under that license including: * What kind of benefits can we expect by applying CC BY-SA 3.0 license? * Why should we apply CC BY-SA 3.0 instead of other similar licenses? <Explanation from Sascha> The CC BY-SA helps us to give a clear License with clear Restriction. If we publishing under CC BY-SA or another CC License everyone can use our Weekly News, write anything from his content, and republish it. And BTW: Ubuntu and Fedora Newsletters are under CC BY-SA too. BTW2: But this is set on the bottom of every Site inside the normal Site. The GFDL which is used by openSUSE is a good License too. But it is needed to paste the whole License inside every new produce. There are several different versions of the Creative Commons licenses (CC) that are not only translated but adapted to different legal systems (hopefully with success). So the 'probability' (to phrase it politely and cautious) that e. g. a German-Germany CC would be rated valid in relation between a German User/Consumer and (a) German legal person (or natural person/many natural persons working together) would be much higher than for a text under the only existing and not translated nor adapted only (US-)English version of the actual GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). I assume that the according relations may exist with Japanese-Japan versions of the CC ... etc. And also at least the de and en Wikipedia are using (at least first and foremost - e. g. once there was dual licensing in the de.Wikipedia). I think more special informations are already posted in this mailing-list [in relation to the terms of the German wiki - if not all deleted in the time after that ...], are available via a common search engine, in a library of a bigger court or an university or just by paying some Euro/Dollar/... to a law related data-base (de: beck-online, juris, etc.) . Two questions to Tumbleweed: 1) I enabled Tumbleweed, gave it higher priority than other repos and did zypper dup. Many packages changed their vendors. Is it right to raise priority? 2) Tumbleweed now has a higher priority than Updates. Now I'm having trouble: Update notifier always shows pending updates (ethtool, yast2). Do I have to give updates a higher priority than Tumbleweed? I really would like to follow Tumbleweed. How do you set priorities? If someone enables Tumbleweed on the upcoming 11.4, is it very likely that most packages will be updated or are we still talking about a small subset? Second and related to the first question, to what extend should we promote Tumbleweed? Is it a major 11.4 thing? Can we truly say Tumbleweed is something people can and should use, will it offer a pretty-much-complete rolling- release distro? (notice that this is relevant for our "why openSUSE" talking points at [1]) Third, if the answer to the second point is positive, should we make it easy somehow to enable Tumbleweed? Eg some tickbox on installation or in our package management system? Obviously, I love Tumbleweed - for the slightly-more-experienced linux user and for those who love the latest & greatest it is awesome - and this happens to be a pretty big chunk of our target usergroup :D On a personal note, I also love Tumbleweed because I think rolling-release stuff rocks - I come from Arch and frankly it's the major thing I loved about it.
