Hello, My name is Jan Fredrik Stoveland, and I am a masters student at the University of Oslo writing a thesis on firm-sponsored open source communities. openSUSE is the main case for the study. I have been granted permission to send you this email by Andreas Jaeger and Martin Lasarch, and I hope you do not mind receiving it. I would like to ask all of the members of the this mailinglist to participate in a brief, anonymous electronic survey targeted at active contributors in the openSUSE community. The research is funded by the University, and is independent of any commercial interests. The link to the survey is here: https://nettskjema.uio.no/answer.html?fid=38823&lang=en I have selected these mailinglists as the main community indicator: project, factory, buildservice, wiki and translation. It is of great importance to get valid answers from as many of you as possible. The questions in the survey concern your current engagement in the openSUSE community, your reasons for participating in the community and your affiliation with Novell. I expect the survey will take you 10 minutes to complete, unless you find any questions difficult to answer. What do you get in return for doing this? The results from the survey will be posted to the list within a month, and the thesis with other interesting findings about your community will be published around May next year. Hopefully this will be of interest to you. But first of all I hope you will contribute for the sake of research itself. Not too much academic research has been done on communities that are facilitated by partially-proprietary companies like Novell. Furthermore, I would like to do an in depth interview on the phone with a few of you to get more detailed answers. I will randomly select about 6 people to talk to. I wonder if there are any plans to make it possible to upgrade openSUSE to the next release (e.g. from 10.3 to 11) through 'openSUSE updater' or an other application. Form the introduction: "The information from this survey will assist the Linux Foundation Desktop Linux workgroup to focus on areas of development that are important to you. The results of this survey may also be valuable to your business. Once you complete the survey, you will be able to view the current aggregated public results of the survey. " No registration needed, you can see directly the results and it's even available in several languages. Hi ok, i have still the bug open for a long time, here is my point of view for discussion. The wiki makes it possible to clutter a lot of pages over the whole wiki, or try to make some kind of order. - is this point of view valid for most of you? - do we need the separation? - what is missing? * SDB An SDB article should describe a solution to a problem in a special format. - separate namespace: SDB: - focus should be on beginners, easiest solution first - no doctoral thesis, short and to the point - for more information link to howto and/or FAQ - definition how to write is in the sdb-howto (which is in the SDB, yeah, i know ...) Hi in the IRC meeting some people are not that happy with all the meeting announce mails if i understood correctly. my idea: Post on Monday _one_ mail with all meetings of the week. jpr already mentioned that he want to announce also special topics for the meeting, but this could be also be done in one mail, so every meeting will have space for that, if needed. This works only if who are usually send the mails working together. Proposal: Every meeting maintainer will take care that the meetings page in the wiki is up-to-date, i (or someone else) will look on it on Monday 16:00 and prepare the mail. Hi all! In order to write some default settings, we have written some YaST modules that have no UI but set some configuration. We called them "invisible modules" for this reason, and use them during the installation process at the Linkat distribution. Linkat is NL9 based distribution and will be a SLED10 based distribution. Hi all, Having just returned from using Ubuntu as my main OS for a few months (I give another distro a go every now and then, but I have returned everytime so far :-), there is one thing that Ubuntu users have available that makes it very easy to setup a new machine, and that is Automatix. http://getautomatix.com/ . Automatix has got a good wrap lately with the admission that Michael Dell (of Dell Computers) uses it on his personal computer. Ideally one would solve it without yet another way to install things. [opensuse-project] opensuse upgrade: newer, faster, worse

Hello, The reason for this mail is quite simple -- I've been using open/suse for a long time and I am afraid to see how opensuse is getting better, yet on the other hand is getting worse. Better -- because for example computer boots faster, worse -- because to do the same thing as before, user has to download extra packages, download "outdated" packages or learn again how to make things work with new tools. For me meaning of upgrade is simply -- user should upgrade system and everything should work as before, minimum. The only changes could be: everything is faster, more secure, reliable, etc. Examples: opensuse dropped smbfs package some time ago, and this done silently, when you try to use smbfs... nothing, no information why, what should user do. losetup worked perfectly well in 10.2, after upgrade user is supposed to set from scratch her/his configuration to make things work. I don't want only to complain, because it is wasting time. My propositions: a) let's say user works with OS X.Y with package P installed older than the basic package from this OS version (example opensuse 10.2 and cups 1.1) -- do not touch such packages! it is clear that user intentionally downgraded this package to work with it, it was her/his will so do not force upgrade of such packages b) dropping software (like smbfs (*)) -- provide fake packages (I already reported this idea), so when user tries to use it explain what she/he should do with it b.1) however this example (*) shows a bad judgement -- I think it is better to provide unmaintained code to help users, than to remove such software and make things worse for users (cifs does not work so well) c) if one tool is replaced with another (losetup example) provide converter, so user could call losetup-backward-compability script and all arguments would be translated to the new tool used in opensuse d) if it is only possible (technically) maintain backward compatibility, ignoring current userbase in such manner reminds me of one big firm and its attitude -- it is bad example to follow In general: it is better to make things work in one place (opensuse distribution) so every user could benefit from it, than ignoring users workplace and making them fix system after upgrade to the state before upgrade. This just a wasting time. Backward compatibility really matters -- it is no use I get new, great cups if it does not work for me at all. The same goes for every other package. Currently this issue is being treated too lightly (in my opinion). Personally, I think top posting is a good thing, with it i can just open a list item and read the latest response rather than scrolling down past the stuff I read the day before. If I go out to the Communicate page I see two forums listed as the most popular forums. http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate I don't understand why the Novell sponsored openSUSE forums are not on the front page. It is a very popular and useful forum for openSUSE. It has an NNTP interface and a newly designed web interface. http://forums.novell.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11 And it is sponsored and staffed by Novell and community members. [opensuse-project] How to help with openSUSE 10.3 Marketing

This is really for _all_ people in the openSUSE community (and in particular all the developers). I know some people think marketing is a dirty word, but unless you have a little marketing, even if you have the most technically excellent and best engineered product, people either aren't going to know about it, or not know about what it contains. So how can everyone help? I've listed three simple ways: * Blog! Yes, this includes you :-) I can't stress how important this is for getting news out to the online open source community. Second only to the village rumour, the information blogs carry travels faster than the speed of light,. They're one of the most obvious ways to make a lot of noise about something great. I often find that it's just too frequently the case that although SUSE has _great_ presence in open source projects, it's just not presented as well in open source blog planets. Let's change that :-) * Digg the story / +1 the Slashdot firehose entries. These sites are read by thousands of users. * Help out new users at release time. A new distribution release attracts a _lot_ of new users to the community, some which may or may not be temporary. A lot of the time users get simple problems at first, which can either make-or-break their openSUSE experience. Please be kind and try to help them! A short while back there was some discussion about merchandising ideas. I had a dig around and found a few bits from when I worked at SUSE. I already posted the photos of my Geekos, here's a video. It has to be a video because of what the calculator does (all down to magnets, so it'll never wear out apparently). Hi, I'm involved both in Debian and Ubuntu development, and I'm often frustrated by how little I know about the other distributions. After discussing this in a blog post[1], I got the impression that I wasn't alone in that case. So I decided to do something about that, and to go ask the other distributions' developers a few questions. If this works well (answers and interest from other distros), I might do that again, or turn this into something more formal (for example, a mailing list and/or a wiki would seem well suited for that). I'll publish the answers on my blog[2], and, if this proves to raise interest, move them to a wiki. In your answers, please avoid codenames (act as if the reader didn't know anything about your distribution). Please try to write your answer as a short paragraph, answering all the sub-questions from the questions at once. Q1. Packages How many "pieces of software" do you have in your distribution? Do you distinguish between "source packages" and "binary packages"? (if yes, give numbers for both). Are there subdivisions in the set of packages (by kind of support, by "freeness")? Are all packages supported the same way, or are there different levels of support? (If different levels, how many packages are supported with each level?) Are some packages imported from another distribution, or are most of your packages done from scratch by your developers ? Q2. Your developers What's a "developer" in your distribution? How many developers do you have? How many of these developers were active in 2007? Does a company (which one?) employ a large number of developers? Do you have different "classes" of developers, or does everybody have the same access right to all your packages? How do you integrate new developers? How do you handle contributors who don't have access rights to the archive? (is there some kind of sponsoring system?) Q3. Developers and packages ownership What's the relationship between developers and packages? Does each package have an assigned developer, or can everybody modify all packages without stepping on anyone's toes? Are packages mostly maintained by teams, or by developers working alone? Other questions: - Did I send that mail to the right mailing list? - Which question should I have asked? What should I ask next? - Do you think that this initiative is interesting? - Do you think that this should move to a seperate mailing list? Would you participate in such a mailing list? - Can you suggest a project that could host such a mailing list without annoying anyone? :) - Any other suggestions? Hi everybody, especially Novell internals in this mail: I'm maintaining a 3rd party repo and I was wondering if it is ok if I copy the 1-click-install button over to our repo. We would as well link it to a *.ymp file, allowing for easy installation of our application.
