Of course we still see people getting this wrong on a regular basis, but googling for "SUSE capitalization" doesn't reveal anything helpful. IMHO we need a wiki page covering the One Absolute Truth, and also a bit of the history behind it. I found this thread from 2005: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2005-08/msg00377.html but it didn't provide the full story. Additionally, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUSE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuSE are (somewhat depressingly) two entirely different articles, neither of which gives any real detail over the renaming from SuSE to SUSE. Hi all, During the last days, the openSUSE Team has proposed several changes in the openSUSE processes and tools: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2013-11/msg00920.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2013-12/msg00044.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2013-12/msg00132.html The main goal of this mail is to present another idea that was already discussed during the recent openSUSE Summit: the Karmafication of the openSUSE infrastructure. People there liked the idea and some related topics have already been raised in the last days on both Factory and Project mailing lists, so we bring the idea here for wider debate and especially to get input from you all. Where can Karmafication be useful? 1. Decision making. As you all know, most final decisions on the technical side rests in Coolo's shoulders. He plays the role of a benevolent dictator, working based on his perception of skills and dedication. Sure he is fair and experienced but still a single human being. 2. Guidance We lack a clear path from newbie to contributor and then to experienced contributor (like maintainer, reviewer etc). Also, we have a wide variety of guidelines which we'd like people to follow better but which aren't hard rules. 3. Motivation There are areas in openSUSE that do not get the love and attention they deserve in both technical and non-technical terms. People who work on them should be recognized and rewarded. How does Karmafication support the factory proposal goals in the above areas? The idea is to add certain 'social' features to our infrastructure to better track contributions and make them more visible. Contributors would earn AND lose karma points based on their actions (or lack of them), that's why we are calling it 'Karmafication'. We explicitly want to avoid the word 'gamification' because is not only about engaging people or motivating them. The main goal is to help our decision making processes: we're a meritocracy (or a do-ocracy, if you prefer) which is very much trust-based, and that trust is very much based on what you do and what you did in the recent past. Karma should have an impact in: 1. Decision making. Make contributions visible: credit where it is due. Having a profile page for every contributor in OBS would be useful in decision making at all levels. Is this person a good candidate to become technical reviewer? Should I accept this risky SR to factory? In the future, once the system is mature enough, a minimum of karma could even be required to perform some actions. 2. Guidance By defining tasks and rewards we could 'spell out' a path, or several, from beginner to more experienced contributor. Think for example a number of tasks around your first step to contributing; or tasks related to more advanced hackery like fixing certain type of bugs. It could also be used as a way of define best practices for OBS and encourage people to follow them. 3. Motivation Motivate people and visibly reward them for working on things which usually fly below the radar. It would be great to have openSUSE contributors pointing to their OBS profile pages as a reference of their skills and experience, in the same way that most open source developers points to their github page. We could make this recognition more tangible with some special gifts (what about a "I take care of stuff!" t-shirt?). A big benefit of Karmafication over other ways of reaching the same goals is that most alternatives require making rules, commitees and bureaucracy and require much more work. Soft motivation through Karmafication brings us these benefits in a much nicer and more flexible way, hopefully without the downsides of rigorous rules. The openSUSE board elections 2013 ended last Sunday. We have 4 new members for the board, the first two positions will be serving a 2 year term, the third and fourth a one year term. Election results: We had 177 people voting. [opensuse-project] Suggestion Concerning Repository Structure and Metadata

Good day, Currently, we have a fair amount of software in the default repositories that the user can utilize. If a user wants to install software that isn't present in the default repositories, he/she can look for it on OBS. The user can then proceed to add the targeted repository to his/her system via 1-click install, zypper, or YaST2. The current system works, but isn't quite perfect due to the following reasons: - Users can't install packages not available in the enabled repositories. If a user wants to install an application or library that isn't in the default repositories, the user has to resort to searching for the package on software.opensuse.org through a browser and then installing it or to installing OSC, searching for the package, adding a repository, and then installing the package. - Users may have to add many repositories to get all their needs. Repositories on OBS may host a single desktop environment, a small collection of apps, a single app, or even a patch. Over time, the user might end up with a large number of repositories in order to keep all his/her apps updated. Refreshing repositories might take longer every time due to this and it might cause confusion. The user will have to regularly check the enabled repositories and think of whether they are needed or not. Refreshing a large number of repositories might also take a while. Repositories can get deleted or altered often and the user will have to modify them at each deletion/alteration. It's impossible for a user to pick up the work of another user on certain repositories. Thus the new maintainer will have to make a different repository. - Users might get confused when apps are offered by multiple repositories. Not all repositories are tagged and it might be difficult to tell which repository has the most updated yet stable package. Zypper will warn the user if the added repository and package will rewrite anything that is already existing as it does whenever a vendor change is required. However, users might not heed the warning and they might not be able to tell if something actually works or not before installing it. What we currently have is not a broken structure. On the contrary, our current system works. However, even if it is not broken, and doesn't require fixing, it can be improved. I'll further demonstrate the limitations of the system by providing user cases. - Daniel wants to install package XYZ. However, package XYZ is not in the default repositories. Daniel goes to software.opensuse.org and searches for package XYZ but finds it listed under several repositories. Some have higher version than others. Daniel wants the highest stable version from a trusted repository. Which one of the repositories should Daniel choose? - Michael is a heavy gamer. He wants to play video games on his desktop. He adds games:tools to install Steam. He then proceeds to add Emulators to install ZSNES, and finally adds games to install SuperTux2. However, he notices that another game he wants is further updated on a home repository and has to add that too. Michael ends up with having too many repositories in order to get a few applications. - Christine is a fan of music. She has thoroughly tested most music applications but is dissatisfied with them. She adds KDE:Extra in order to update Clementine to a higher version, then downloads the .rpm of Rhythmbox from Factory so she can install it without adding the repo, and then adds GNOME:Apps to use an updated mplayer. Lastly, she adds Geeko123's repo because he created his own music player and uploaded it to his home project. One day, she wants to install Wayland dev packages. Unknown to her, Geeko123 has added his own unstable Wayland packages. Zypper pulls the Wayland packages from Geeko123's repo and Christine ends up with a broken Wayland because she had assumed that Geeko123's repo was solely for his music player and did not read the warnings. As such, I propose the following improvements: 1 - Create larger repositories and merge similar ones together. Games, game:tools, emulators, Documentation:Tools, KDE:Extra, GNOME:Apps, LibreOffice:Stable, Network, Network:Chromiun, Mozilla, Mozilla:Beta, Mozilla:Alpha, Utilites, Network:Utilities, Utilities, and other similar repositories can be merged together into one repository that offers extra software. We can call it "OSS Extra". The proprietary packages, like Steam, can be added to the Non-OSS repository. This can include different desktop environments as well instead of having to place XFCE, LXDE, MATE, and other desktop environments in their own repositories so long as their packages don't conflict. Naturally, certain projects have conflicting packages. For instance, Ayatana's packages override GNOME. For those projects we can make an alternative repository of their own. We'd cut down a large number of repositories and aggregate them into three separate ones. Multimedia libraries, security packages, server-oriented packages, and debugging and development tools can be added to a repository of their own. GNOME:Next, KDE:Unstable, KF5, and all the similar unstable packages can be kept in an Unstable repo. Factory can be aggregated into a Factory repo. Packages that are being tested can have their own Testing repo. If someone wants to submit a package to these repositories directly, he/she has to have permission to. Users can submit their packages but they won't appear unless the maintainers review them. Instead of having Calibre listed in 10 different repositories and each of them having a version, the packager who wants to update the software can silently submit the package and the maintainer can approve it or disapprove of it. This will save the maintainers some work if they don't have to package everything themselves. This also means that we can have more maintainers. Some people are willing to test but can't package stuff. Submitted packages can be tagged (GNOME, KDE, GTK, etc.) so maintainers can pick a tag to work on that follows their preferences. 2 - Create Community repository that is managed and run by the community. Home projects can remain a playground for packages and app developers. When their apps are ready, they can be moved into the Community repository. Instead of having one repository for Budgie, one for Elegance-colors, and one for Corebird, packages and builders can submit their packages to Community. If someone decides to quit maintaining a package, another maintainer can seamlessly take his/her place without setting up a new repository and forcing the user to update their sources. The community repository will be collaborative at its heart. - Add Reputation system. Installing packages from the Community repo can be a unsafe. However, if the uploader has been praised before, then the user might feel more trusting. That way, the user will have a better idea what is all right to install and what isn't. This will also give motivation to people. - Let the community maintain its own repository. By giving this repository a rating system, we can let the community maintain this repository on its own. Alternative Suggestions: 1 - Make zypper utilize smarter metadata. Zypper can be updated to read all the metadata from all the repositories and could suggest adding a repository if the desired package isn't in the currently enabled repository. People should be able to use zypper to find packages instead of having to resort to a browser to search through OBS. This way, users can use gnome-software to access all the software on OBS (in the future when a zypper plugin is written for gnome-software). 2 - Visibly tag repositories to show their stability. In order to help users choose the most stable repository, visible tags should be provided to indicate the stability before the user adds the repository. 3 - Make repositories collaborative. By allowing collaborative work we may end up seeing less repositories in general. If person X creates repo for package Y, person X is asked if repo is to be open for collaboration to everyone. If person X decides to quit, another maintainer can pick up the work on the same repository. 4 - Allow user to hide all "home" repositories. I firmly believe that we should make everything simpler. It isn't a matter of what can or can't be done, it's more about how easy it is to get things done. By clearing confusion and allowing collaborative work, we can help the users save precious time, give them an easier system, and help them make better decisions. With front-end GUIs for package managers, like Apper and gnome-software, on the rise, the traditional method of installing software is changing. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Thus, we should reduce the steps and complications of installing and managing software in order to appeal to more users and to further satisfy the ones we have. Improvement is what keeps projects interesting. I for one do not want a system that works. I want a system that works better than it did before. I hope you all consider my suggestions before judging them and think of the average users, not just of the advanced ones. Thank you for your time and I hope we can keep this thread civil. Dear community, The openSUSE team has presented and with you discussed some plans for a more sustainable development project➀. Proposals like working openQA in the openSUSE development workflow, implementing staging projects, making improvements to OBS - and implementing these things will cost a lot of time. Right now, the openSUSE team is or plans to be working on a wide range of things: the openSUSE Conference, the new merchandising program and of course we have the openSUSE release process on our plate. Especially the work on the release takes much time from our team, both in terms of ongoing effort (keep factory working, openQA testing) and of course around the release itself. To implement the proposals we made in a reasonable time frame, we think it makes most sense for us to focus on them. That means, the openSUSE team would work on OBS, openQA etc in a series of sprints over a period of 6-8 months. In that time, we spend little if any time on the release process. Of course, after these changes the team will be back on the job at full speed. What does this mean for the project? Either the release should be done by others or in another way, or openSUSE will essentially skip a release. The project can still get updates to its users - there is tumbleweed and OBS of course, and perhaps we can do a simpler/preview release. Many things are possible. Shoot. Hello everyone, A recent patch ("OpenSuSE-2013-1015") with the very descriptive description of "SDL: Update to current version", marked as critical, led me to investigate what this was actually patching. Without success. Googling for "opensuse patch list" or "opensuse bugzilla" does not bring up either of these two, a list of patches for a certain version of the OpenSuSE distribution apparently does not even exist and when going for the Bugzilla, there is a link on the wiki which redirects you to a Novell login. After account creation, where they require everything including ancestors to 3rd degree and chewing-gum-preference, there is no obvious way to list all bugs... Long story short, this is awkward: OpenSuSE is an open source project, I do not want to have to login to any company portal to be able to access a Bugzilla (if it is possible without login, i did not find the link). Also I want to be able to browse bugs and most of all, it must be possible to find information about patches online EASILY. Even Microsoft managed that (and they do not manage much) with their KB<id>, as do other linux distributions. Please prove me wrong and show me there is an online list with detail information about each patch and something more specific than "version update" for a critical patch, preferably referencing a bug. I know everything is "signed" and all, but i do not see how i can trust the OpenSuSE public key in days like these (no offense towards the project). Hi, following yesterday's mail[1], we introduce some of the ideas we would like to discuss with you in order to create a common big picture we can share. This big picture is relevant in order to define the actions to execute the following months/ years. [1] http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2013-11/msg00094.html What do we want to achieve? Goals ================================= 1) Add focus to increase alignment among contributors. 2) Foster the community and the user base. - Starting from our current community, we want to keep increasing the number of contributors, specially those working on core parts of the distribution/project. - The openSUSE user base needs to grow. We propose to be even more open to new niches. 3) Catalyze openSUSE maturity process. - openSUSE has an interesting number of contributors. Now we think it is time to reinforce our structures. - Having more solid structures/groups will allow openSUSE to assume more responsibilities and deliver. - In general, we think we need few rules but good ones, easy to follow and analyze. 4) Attract new players by becoming more attractive to new players. - The Free Software ecosystem is now full of companies/non-profits that use, deploy, develop and/or understand Free Software and its benefits. - We want to support ideas toward increasing our value for them so they come to openSUSE and become good citizens of the project. Based on these goals, there are 4 aspects we propose to focus on: Enhanced Factory ================ We would like to put effort in Factory in the following direction: * New process getting the best of Factory, Tumbeweed and devel projects. We need everybody contributing in a single point for a single purpose. We are just too few to spread efforts. * Improve development process based on our strengths. What are we very good at? Let's base the new process on that. * Clarify roles and responsibilities. Redesign processes so we increase the community participation in key areas. Teams instead of champions. * More stability and QA. Testing before submitting. Factory should be usable. * Rolling distribution based on release early/release often principle. This proposal will be more in depth described tomorrow on Factory mailing list where we will expand the bullet points mentioned here. Overhauled openSUSE Release =========================== Once we have established the basis, we think we can concentrate in our current user base. That is, end users and non-OS developers that needs a solid base. We see the openSUSE Release focused on two main targets: * A desktop and a server oriented release that target end users that work everyday with their computers. * Using OBS repositories to cover further use cases. - The idea is to initially target developers that need a stable base and tools on top. - Another interesting use case are derivatives. There could be more. Principles that would drive our efforts: * Stability and quality as core values. - We can make the more stable distribution for users based on Green values. * Longer release cycle. * Enhanced maintenance model * OBS can be use in a smart and efficient way to add flexibility to this model. - People that needs stable base but recent version of tools. - New niches: big data, NoSQL, new programming languages, cloud.... Open Governance Model ===================== Our Governance model has improved over the years. We would like to work with the community the following years in taking some steps further. * Technical governance model adapted to our new development processes: very few but clearer rules. Mentoring ecosystem. * Project governance model: evolution from our current model while keeping our core values. More efficient structure to accomplish the project goals. - SUSE role evolution: Owner (2005) -> Main sponsor -> Patron, together with other players. Where can SUSE add value, beyond supporting ideas like the ones described (or others)? Ralf Flaxa in his keynote [2] pointed some ideas where SUSE could complement openSUSE, increasing SUSE's contribution. Hello, this is partly related to the discussion about priorities, but I don't want to hijack this other thread. I just wanted to say that I noticed three important blocking steps in my geecko life. I don't ask you to solve *my* problem, but I thing the project in his whole could benefit if more people could pass these steps more easily. * use of bugzilla. I was part of the very first open office french gteam loooooooooooooong time ago, an,d I had to wait several *years* before being able to manage bugzilla. We need still something more progressive to guide new geeckos to make usefull bugzilla reports (I'm not even sure mine are good) * use of the wiki. I started the french wiki and was from the beginning in the opensuse adventure. But when the wiki was re-organised, I stopped completely using it. A wiki is *by nature* unorganised and anyway accessed mostly through google or other search engine. Having to find where to put my participation was relly too difficult. - there is at least a need of better explanation of where do what work. * right now, or better said one year ago I wanted to help a friend developer entering his software (EKD=EnKoderDemixer) in OBS. I was never able to do so. Not for OBS itself, but I don't understand hos to write a spec file. I don't even understand the vocabulary used in the help files.... I compile kernel since nearly 20 years now so I should be able to do OBS. I probably could achieve this if I had not other (family) problems at the same time, but this is anyway a blocking part. Hi all, We have been thinking about a business track idea for oSC14, but aren't sure whether to do this (and how) or not. So in hope to reach a community decision, and have the dos and the don'ts defined, please give your thoughts on the ideas below - what you see could, should, couldn't or shouldn't be done. * Upsides * - It is a way to attract sponsors - Would provide insights to users' POV and, - It is a way for the community to get some potentially interesting feedback - Might result in finding a way for sponsors to support or work with the community - Might be interesting for community members using openSUSE for business too * Downsides * - Might not be as community oriented as we would like - Might not be openSUSE centered enough ..? * Format / description * - it could be in a dedicated room, last half a day - start with a few sponsor / business lectures and end with a round table or discussion between the community, SUSE, sponsors? - comments on this topic from Hans De Raad (potential sponsor): "would a sponsor have the opportunity to do some informative promotional sessions? I'd also like to do some demo's about the client side of openSUSE and the current level of usability the groupware suites (Thunderbird/Lightning, Kontact) have achieved, is that something you would consider?" - do we say that the prerequisite is to be a sponsor to apply for a business lecture in the business track? - the simplest formula I see would be: have business topics in one room for half a day, or the whole day... - or have lectures first and then continue with a round table .. have a discussion about stuff What is "stuff" could be left to our sponsors/business lecturers to tell us: what do they care about in free software, in openSUSE that helps or enables them to do business and discuss that. [opensuse-project] What's the best way to nudge a bug?

It's a newly reported bug (reported earlier today), but there are implications to threading in the forums for users who upgrade to 13.1 and use NNTP to access the forums. There's a bug in libgmime 2.6.16 through 2.6.18 (2.6.18 is what comes with 13.1) that incorrectly wraps the References: header, causing misthreading of posts on the server. libgmime 2.6.19 is reported to have the fix. I've built this on obs and am testing it now, but the issue was found on the bsd platform several months ago, and it is fixed upstream - so all we need is an official build of 2.6.19 in the update channel. The bug number on bnc (including links to relevant discussion on the pan- users mailing list, the RFC that the build violates, and the bug on the GNOME bug tracker) is 855023: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=855023 I realize that I just opened the bug today so it probably just hasn't been reviewed yet, but I wanted to raise awareness since we use NNTP in our forum community, and this has the potential to create confusion in those discussions (indeed, it already has with posts I've made using the broken library). Hi, since it is right now possible to take a breath between the waves of planning I like to share a thought. In the last mails we read a couple of good ideas especially around the distro which are worth to think about and act upon. We also seem to widely agree that a bit more "innovation" would be cool. Topic examples: - Gaming on openSUSE - Clouding with openSUSE - Free Communication, as in "No, thanks, I don't use M$ Skype, but connect my using XYZ on openSUSE". - Documentation ideas - more All of these ideas would now require more investigation and _work_ to get it into Factory etc. pp. We need experts for each of the topics, which we seem to have, and people who want to learn, help and finally contribute. I often think that the missing link seems to be that somebody says: "Hey, I wonna work on 'Gaming on openSUSE', this is the rough idea, how about you help me and we have fun on this?" and people who do not feel able to start such a "big" topic themselves but are interested can say: "Well, yes, sure, if there would be a task for me..." That is what worked in the past. So I wonder if there is anything how we could help this process to work better in our community. These let's call them 'interest-groups' exist, sometimes as one-man shows, but are they visible enough? Can, for example, somebody who would like to spent a little bit of time helping somewhere, find the spots where help is needed? Has ever somebody called for help in openSUSE? How would one do that? Hi, Once openSUSE 13.1 has been released, it is time for the openSUSE Team to focus on the future. We want to share some ideas we have about the project in general and factory in particular. The topic is not easy. so this mail is a little long and dense, but hopefully worth it. It won't be the last one so let me know how to improve it. INTRODUCTION/GOALS This is the first of a series of mails we will publish the following days with different ideas. The process we are proposing has no intention of pointing at anybody, revisiting the past or enforce any situation within the community. Our goals are: * Share a picture as a starting point of discussion. * Use the discussed picture as a reference to agree on actions we all can/want to execute. FIRST STEP: PIECES OF THE PUZZLE One of the first things we did was digging into numbers that provided us information about the status of the project. Data cannot be the only source to create a complete picture, but it is helpful as first step. In order to better understand the rest of the mail, you probably want to look the following references: * Alberto Planas talk at oSC13: openSUSE in Numbers[1] * Alberto Planas' slides from the above talk[2] * First openSUSE Team blog post: Numbers in openSUSE[3] * Second openSUSE Team blog post: More on statistics[4] * Jos post about numbers[5] One important note about the numbers: since most of the behaviors of the variables reflected on the graphs were consolidated, at some point we decided to stop adding effort in collecting numbers until 13.1 was released. Once the Release is well established, we will update them and evaluate the influence of this Release in the global picture. I won't try to go very deep in the analysis. It would be too long. There are many interpretations that can be done based on the graphs. I will just point out the most relevant for our purpose. Feel free to add others. Following Alberto Planas' order from his slides[2]... 1.- Downloads The number of downloads do not measure our user base, but provide hints about the impact of the work done every 8 months, the potential new users we might bring to the project and, looking at pre-release downloads, the number of testers. Taking a look at the graphs, we can see that the overall number of downloads is growing at a slow path (slope). This behavior is not consistent in every release. For instance, 12.1 was more downloaded that 12.2 or 12.3. More and more people uses zypper for updating the distribution though. 2.- UUIDs (installations that update regularly) * Looking at the number of machines that regularly update against openSUSE repositories (daily, weekly and monthly), we can easily conclude that the situation is very stable. The speed of growth (daily and weekly stats) or decline (monthly) is low. * What the graph do not show is the acceleration. It has been negative (small in value) for quiet some time now. * When looking at the architectures, we see that x86_64 is more popular than i586. This behavior is accelerating, as confirmed in the download numbers collected for 12.3 * When looking at the mediums where those installations come from, we clearly see three dominant ones: .iso (dvd version), ftp (net installs) and Live CD. * There is a relevant detail that Alberto mentioned in his talk. More than half, almost 2/3, of openSUSE installations are not using the last version many weeks after Release date. There is also a significant amount of installations using unmaintained or Evergreen versions. 3.- Factory and Tumbleweed installations/"users" Factory is our ongoing development effort. As you can see in the graph, the number of Factory installations is constant. Tumbleweed was very successful when it came out. Many developers and bleeding edge users liked it. Its popularity is decreasing though. 4.- Contributors to factory and devel projects The numbers of users that are submitting request to factory/devel projects is increasing. Now we have more non SUSE contributors. SUSE ones remain constant. The overall growth is about 27 new contributors per year, a little bit more than 2 new contributors per month. 5.- Social media and comparison with Fedora openSUSE is, in the social media channels evaluated, in the range of Fedora. Comparing our numbers, I guess we all agree with this general trend that states that openSUSE is a more user oriented distribution than Fedora is. We have less downloads but more users (installations updating regularly). SOLVING THE PUZZLE All the above pieces shows a stable picture. Every sign of growth or decline is, in absolute and/or relative numbers, small except social media, due to their explosion as communication channels (which I do not think is way different from what other Free Software communities are experiencing). ADDING CONTEXT TO THE PICTURE openSUSE coexist with other "coopetitors" (Free Software competitors + cooperators) and competitors (closed sources distributions). Touchscreens, cloud, big data, games...the Linux ecosystem is evolving and there are new users with new needs. New players are consolidating their positions: Arch, Chakra, Mint... Ubuntu is moving to the mobile space, Debian is getting some attention back from previous Ubuntu users.... On the other hand, some distros that were relevant in the past have disappeared, our 13.1 has got more attention than previous ones, SUSE is healthy and willing to invest more in openSUSE in the future ... In the above context, how is our "stable" situation perceived? How do we think it should be perceived? INTERPRETING THE PICTURE If we agree that the overall number of users of Linux based server + "traditional" desktop OS (let's remove the mobile/embedded space and cloud for now), is growing, not following the "market" growing trend might be perceived as a wake up call, a clear sign that improvements needs to be done. But if we agree that we are playing in a risky and challenging field, stability can be perceived as a healthy sign. After these months of analysis and discussions with both, contributors and users, I would like to ask you if you agree with the the idea that the first picture is more prominent than the second one. But, does the second one provide us a good platform to improve our current position? With the increasing number of new users, trying out openSUSE 13.1 there's also an increasing complaint rate about the non availability of Nvidia drivers. Why we should care about them, after all they are not free drivers. But as we in the past & recent present offer them by being prepared internally at SUSE then pushed to nvidia people in charge of publishing them. The work done by Stefan Dirsch has always been a great addition to end users that were not able to use nouveau for their daily task. I don't want to talk about philosophy in this tread, I'm only interested by the action, we (community side), openSUSE Team (as favorite SUSE internal point of contact), SUSE, can provide to finally better serve our end users. For 13.1, it look like the package on obs were ready to build since 1st November, so then why we don't have it? Stefan's holidays? Unfortunately this "accident" has already happened in the past, so I feel it's time create some process to be make it impossible to happen. I perfectly know that nothing is easy as it look (license, responsibility etc). So my vision is perhaps naive. 1st idea : Is it possible to have a Stefan's backup internally, who will be able to build the package, and have the keys to forward them to nvidia? 2nd idea : Should the community be in charge of it? We have get some success with the AMD equivalent situation even if everything is not failure proof as I would like. Keep experts of it preparing the package as it is now. Would the repository owner accept sr if some comes like (update, improvements etc)? 2a variant : building this package on packman -> then publish there 2b variant : build it locally (it works) and then publish them somewhere 3rd idea : yours ? All, The SUSE Studio statistics and the openSUSE statistics don't seem to agree very well. SUSE Studio allows both SLES and openSUSE appliances to be built, but it seems reasonable to assume the majority of the above are working with openSUSE. Those are pretty massive numbers. Comparing those numbers to the openSUSE numbers something seems wrong. Total ISO downloads of openSUSE is measured in 100's of thousands per month. Unique UUIDs is less than 500K. RE: downloads The most popular appliance in the SUSE Studio gallery is an opensuse based appliance <http://susestudio.com/a/TadMax/owncloud-in-a-box>. That one appliance has been downloaded over 30,000 times. I assume that's 30,000+ downloads that were missed. The total openSUSE downloads should be increased by the openSUSE appliance downloads from susestudio? Is the number of openSUSE based appliance downloads available? Is it available by openSUSE release? Can anyone provide a count of downloads in recent months? RE: Users Well under 500K openSUSE users and yet there are almost 250,000 SUSE Studio users. That seems hard to believe. I'm guess the 250,000 is cumulative. Is there a way to get a count of how many of those accounts have had even a single login in the last 12 months? RE: UUIDs It seems unbelievable that there is a million plus appliances and less then 500K UUIDs getting updates. Do VM appliances downloaded from susestudio then run inside a VM each get a unique UUID, or are the multiple instances failing to be counted? Is there someway going forward to have the UUID encode the source of install. ie. From a normal openSUSE ISO of from a SUSE Studio download. Maybe the appliances tend to be used and not updated via the update repos? All openSUSE members[1] are eligible to vote. The board consist of one appointed chairperson and 5 elected members who may serve up to 2 consecutive terms on the board. In this election we will have 4 seats to be elected, 2 for a 2 year term, and 2 for a 1 year term. Andrew Waafaa's and Will Stephenson's terms are coming to expiration. Richard Brown's seat is up for election as he got appointed in the board as a replacement for Pascal Bleser. Raymond Wooninck's seat is up for election because he resigned from the board this summer. The 4 candidates with the most votes will be elected for the board. The 2 top voted candidates will get a 2 year term, then next 2 candidates each a 1 year term. [opensuse-project] oSC14 dates confirmed, IRC meeting on further organization activities

Dear all, The dates for oSC14 have been fixed today, and they are: 24th - 28th April, 2014. I would like to invite all who would kindly help with the organization to an IRC meeting. The proposed date for the meeting to take place is this Friday, November 29th, 17:00 hours CET. The proposed channel is: #openSUSE-project - irc://irc.opensuse.org/openSUSE-project. I am sending the two lists below, which are the proposed table of contents for the meeting. - A short status report is on the first list. - Things we have to start doing, that we really need help with from the community, are on the second list. 1. Things happening, report: - University of Dubrovnik and Suse are preparing a venue contract, -- University of Dubrovnik has confirmed the dates (24th - 28th April, 2014) - Free Software Foundation Europe is interested in puting a booth at oSC14, -- Karsten Gerloff (president of FSFE) is interested in giving a talk. Can we suggest a title? -- Program commitee needs to be formed to decide on this - There is an idea to have a business track at the conference -- Program commitee needs to be formed to decide about this, -- Program commitee would need to define what it would look like (if we will have it) - one day or more days; wanted topics etc... - We have been talking with the Tourist board of Dubrovnik about deals for accommodation. I hope we'll be able to start making bookings in a week or two. -- There is possibility of City of Dubrovnik sponsoring the event - Tomo (in Dubrovnik) is making a list of locations/bars for parties, will post info to choose at some time in the near future. 2. Things we need to start doing quickly - A conference program commitee has to be defined - Artwork and web design is needed - talked briefly with Carlos, he's interested to help, but we need more people to help with this -- We have a local designer, she can help if needed, with suggestions to make artwork local; coordinate production of materials locally if/when needed. - A CMS for the conference web is needed -- We can now publish dates and details about the conference venue so we should get this ready - We need to deploy OSEM (Contacted Henne, we were waiting for the dates) -- We need a logo for this - Call for papers needs to be published - program commitee via mail to -project and news release via news.o.o - Marketing machine has to be put in motion -- We should get the announcement texts ready -- news articles; g+ articles... -- notify tech portals -- openSUSE conference marketing at FOSDEM - is there a plan for openSUSE booth at FOSDEM? - Schedule regular IRC meetings If there is anything else you think should be talked about, please bring it up during the meeting, or before by email.
