[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. I am seeing this with an openSUSE 12.1 system at home, and also a Factory system at work: % host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 And then, when running zypper patch or zypper up, I see Retrieving: repomd.xml [error] Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable Alas, my provider nor that network at work support IPv6. Still, my system has IPv6 enabled since roaming around on different networks, IPv6 may be present, or even necessary there. (This does not happen all the time, sometimes if I retry a bit later the system uses IPv4 and everything works.) Now, is this just a setup problem and I should simply and unconditionally disable IPv6? Or are some parts of our update or network stack in need of some adjustments? For the time being, unless this is just me running into this, should we disable IPv6 on download.opensuse.org? As of 23:00 UTC on 16 December, 2012, the openSUSE Project’s members completed the Fifth election of the openSUSE Board. At stake were two seats of the five electable seats. With 8 candidates, the community definitely had a broad choice of qualified candidates to choose from. In the end, the two top vote-getters were Raymond Wooninck (tittiacoke) and Robert Schweikert, (robjo) respectively. They will join the openSUSE Board on January 9th during the transitional meeting of the regularly scheduled Project meeting heldon the Freenode IRC Channel at 17:00 UTC. The Election Officials would like to congratulate all of thecandidates for a great campaign season. These candidates included Matt Barringer, Richard Brown, Carl Fletcher, Manu Gupta, Chuck Payne and Stefan Seyfried. All of these candidates demonstrated a commitment to the Project and exemplified the Guiding Principles which the Project, as a whole, is founded upon. All, The netiquette was updated in the last couple days to explicitely say cross-posting is wrong: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_list_netiquette#Cross_posting I very much disagree for the majority of the opensuse specialized lists. In particular I note there is currently a cross-posted discussion going on here with both -artwork and -project in the to: line. I think this is as it should be. I propose the netiquette be updated to say: ======= Cross posting That is when the same message is sent to two or more mail lists at once, like when we CC two or more people in a private message. Problem is if people reply and are not able to post to both lists. Then one of the replies is rejected and the conversation becomes disjointed. ie. Conversation becomes broken as the reader[s] can see only messages that are posted to their list, often stumbling on answers without previous questions. This is imposing a lot of additional work to follow conversation, like looking another list, or mail list archives, and try to locate missing messages. The opensuse lists come in 2 flavors: Closed lists that only allow subscriber postings and open lists which allow non-subscriber postings. The high volume end-user distro support lists are all closed. The lower volume specialized lists are typically open. Thus if you post to a end-user list like "opensuse(a)opensuse.org" do not cross-post to any other list. If you are posting to the more specialized open list, cross-posting is fine, but when replying to cross-posted messages, please continue to reply to both of the cross-posted lists. === FYI: The LKML (linux kernel mailing lists) familiy of mailing lists has been open for years and the cross-posting has been the norm there for years. This is a solution. FYI2: I first proposed on opensuse(a)opensuse.org converting it to an open list and allowing cross-posting, but got little buy-in. That's why I carved out the main user support lists from the rest. Hi all, Here is a report of what the openSUSE Board discussed in October and November 2012. Note: action items that have been completed are not mentioned here; some action items can belong to non-board members. We intend to have such reports on a regular basis. On a personal level, I'd like to encourage teams to write short reports too, to keep everyone aware of what's going on. Feedback on the content (as well as the form) is welcome :-) Cheers, Vincent ================================================================== Events ====== + openSUSE Conference 2013 One team applied to organize the Conference in 2013. After some discussion with the team, and an evaluation of other options that could be considered, it was agreed that the Conference would be organized in Greece in July 2013. + openSUSE Summit 2013 SUSE proposed to host an openSUSE Summit in Florida after SUSEcon, in November 2013. In concrete terms, SUSE would sponsor the venue and part of the organization, while the community would handle the content and some local organization. To make an informed decision, feedback on the idea has been requested from the community. + openSUSE Conference 2014 In the hope that we can have two events a year, and assuming that we would have a venue for the Summit sponsored by SUSE around November every year, the board believes it would be beneficial to have the Conference in spring. To enable this in 2014, we need to publish a call for hosting bids shortly after the openSUSE Conference 2013 announcement. AI: all to decide about openSUSE Summit 2013 AI: all to prepare a call for bids for the openSUSE Conference 2014 Hackathons ========== A long-time idea of organizing more hackfests/sprints/etc. was pushed with a proposal from SUSE to host three hackathons before openSUSE 12.3. The board supported the proposal. One goal is to learn from this experience so that the community can organize more hackathons all year long. Andrew agreed to monitor and help the coordination of the first hackathons for the board. Changes to Ambassadors Program ============================== Kostas sent a proposal about changes to the ambassador program (as proposed in his talk at the conference). On a general note, the board supports the changes. There were some comments / suggestions for changes from a non-board reviewer, that could be added to clarify a few things (such as the relation with our existing governance structure, ie the board). AI: Kostas to review latest comments, and then start implementing the changes. Legal entity for openSUSE ========================= An internal discussion about whether we need a legal entity or not resumed again, and what form it should take. Two of the goals would obviously be to be able to have direct access to some funds, and to receive donations. Two main approaches were being discussed: - creation of a Foundation - joining a non-profit organization like the Software Freedom Conservancy The two approaches are currently under evaluation (which includes discussing with the Software Freedom Conservancy). The goal is to have as much information as possible so that the board with newly-elected members can move fast next year. AI: Vincent to discuss further with Software Freedom Conservancy AI: Henne to fetch old documents about establishing a Foundation Organization of openSUSE Board elections ======================================== The board worked on setting up an election committee that will organize the elections. Izabel Valverde, Bryen Yunashko and Thomas Schmidt agreed to step up. Misc ==== There was short discussion on having openSUSE as an organization in Ohloh, with general agreement that it should be done. All, Only 2 days left and looking at the platforms / backgrounds I must say it's a fantastic selection of candidates. I'm not sure we could go wrong with any of them. My only wish is that we had a runoff option of some kind with this many great candidates, I bet no one gets even 40%. If I'm right and the votes are almost evenly split across numerous candidates , I suggest the rules be updated for future elections to have a quick runoff mechanism. Ideas of how to do that can wait until this election is over. libcdio 0.90 has been released. Right now we have a GIT snapshot because of a legal problem that the .changes file summarizes as: - libcdio-paranoia separated from libcdio due to license issues see bnc#756564 I want to read the bug report to know how to do a proper update. But I can't access to it. Now that I have shown that making legal related bugs private causes problems, there is any good reason to do that? [opensuse-project] Call for volunteers - Program Committee

Hi, As you may be aware (hopefully) oSC13 planning and organization is on the way and we have little time to pull everything together. The conference will take place in Greece in July. While there are numerous tasks that can only be accomplished by local volunteers there are also a plethora of tasks that can be accomplished from afar. One such task is to create a schedule, decide on tracks etc. For this we need volunteers to form the Program Committee. Being part of the committee is independent of attendance, i.e. you may not be able to attend but you can still help make oSC13 a great event. We need at least one person that has experience with Indico or a similar tool that we can use to accept papers. The team needs 5 to 8 people. So far we have the following members on the committee: Stella (differentreality) will lead the team and coordinate with the rest of the oSC13 organization team, Henne, Luiz, Alberto, and myself. Therefore it would be great if we can find 2 or 3 more people willing to help with the progam for oSC13. Everyone signing up is expected to participate in a few meetings to discuss what tracks we should have, timing of call for papers etc. Also everyone on the committee is expected to read all the submitted abstracts. A rough list of tasks we have collected so far can be found here: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference_todo_list#Program (Note that other oSC13 tasks are being tracked in Trello and the program comittee might also move to Trello if we end up with many more tasks than anticipated) So feel free to jump right in, and respond to this e-mail or send me an e-mail directly if you are interested in helping with the program for oSC13. Hey everyone, The 11th annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE 11x), is just around the corner. I have already been in contact with the fine people at SCaLE and secured our booth. They will be getting us our Exhibitor=92s Kit soon enough. I would like to put some feelers out in the community for interested community members that would like to help work the booth. I have informally spoken to a few local people who have expressed a desire to help, but I would like to formalize those discussions by bringing them on-list. Also, I know there has been some ideas tossed about... Ideas like, getting a custom "openSUSE Project" banner, and having some videos looping showing off the different desktops running on 12.2. If we are serious about doing ideas like these, we need to start planning and, more importantly, acting in preparation for SCaLE. SCaLE is going to be on February 22-24, 2013 at the Hilton Los Angeles International Airport Hotel. I am looking forward to working the booth again... I hope we get some new faces working the booth this year too. [opensuse-project] E17 goes to openSUSE

Hi lizards fellows, after years of development of E17, after years of E17 built for openSUSE externally I'm glad I can say that E17 release is getting near and it's way to openSUSE is getting to an end. Release is scheduled to December 21th 2012 and all packages needed for the E are already accepted or waiting in the openSUSE submit queue for review. E17 is not the ultimate goal, but first step in accepting this live part of opensource world ecosystem. You can find our future steps in Todo list on wiki (see URL bellow). I think conference should be our primary community event, focused on the community and it's needs, stuffed with the best talks, possibly in the model of oSC 11 (ie. Shove a few hundred Geekos in a building and let the magic happen) I think Summit's great potential is to be our 'window to the business world' event. SUSEcon to me seems to be SUSE's big corporate, partners & marketing shindig, with SUSE screaming 'look at us, we're big, we're awesome', filling up customers and attendees brains with as much information as possible about the SUSE world. I think openSUSE needs to be an integral part of that. We're an important part of what SUSE do, arguably more so than any other partner, so at the very least, even if Summit continues as a separate event, I'd like to see an openSUSE booth, ideally staffed with both SUSE and non-SUSE contributors to openSUSE. I also think, instead of a separate summit event, I'd like to see an openSUSE track at SUSEcon with sessions focusing on the bleeding edge (ie. stuff not yet in SLE) and gaining new contributors (how your business can use OBS, how to submit patches, etc). The logic being to grab the interest of SUSEcon's audience and could hopefully lead to some of them getting involved with openSUSE That said, I realise my proposal has one major flaw - As a corporate event SUSEcons price tag of $999 puts it well out of reach of most openSUSE community members who may want attend just for the openSUSE track. That's something we'd need to think about, but I don't think its insurmountable, or worst case, it just means we have to do a better job of encouraging their attendance to oSC and making it as internationally accessible as we can. Hi, these statements reflect issues that I would like to work on: 1.- 15:50:13 <lupinstein> without it, the money would go to SUSE like the money from Google Summer of Code, but I could be wrong. 2.- 15:50:58 <manugupt1> lupinstein: Last time heard, Jos telling in a mailing list that we do get money.. so thats great.. :) but we need some transparency there.. I believe.. which should be a role for the next board 3.- 15:52:37 <lupinstein> it would be hard for me to give to SUSE, because I am not sure if it would all go to openSUSE. 4.- 15:53:22 <lupinstein> anyway foundation would be a plus for transparency in my opinion. It seems that two topics, transparency and increasing income are linked to the creation of the Foundation. This is a wrong approach to me. They are separate and not neccesarily linked topics. The Foundation is, in any case, the consequence of a wider and more complex process. Having a company like SUSE should allow openSUSE to, in the case a foundation is created, to start it in a very mature and susteinable state. We are far from there at this point. We can and should increase transparency in the economic area and we have to find ways for the project to become economically susteinable, so creating a Foundation could be a topic to discuss because it has a clear mid term future. 5.- 16:09:54 <tittiatcoke> The KDE area didn't loose any members to open-slx, but the loss was more due to the reorganization of the boosters team open-slx is an example of the opportunities openSUSE has to become "business friendly" Open Source Press is another example. Transforming openSUSE into a business friendly ecosystem will be a major topic in the coming new action plan. What do you think? We are very happy to inform you that next year’s openSUSE Conference (oSC13), the yearly get together of our community, will happen in July in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki, Greece. oSC13 will bring together a wide variety of Free and Open Source (FOSS) contributors to collaborate on one of the major Linux distribution projects. Hi, In case you were not aware, SUSE has announced that SUSECon 2013 will be held in November 2013 around Orlando (Florida, USA). If you want more details, see: https://www.suse.com/company/press/2012/11/suse-announces-location-and-date… In 2012, we organized an openSUSE Summit after SUSECon: SUSE sponsored us by providing the venue (and some help with logistics), so we were able to focus on the content and on the on-site organization during the event itself. Thanks again to Bryen and Alan who lead that effort! Now, SUSE is offering us to do something similar in 2013. Of course, we'd need to move fast if we want to do that (as the venue needs to be secured for additional days). There have been people suggesting that we should also have a booth during SUSECon, or even suggesting that our openSUSE presence should happen during SUSECon (as part of it?) to decrease the amount of work needed for the organization. Obviously, there's the "will it conflict with the openSUSE conference?" question :-) We'll have some news about the conference in the next few days, but the short summary is that there should be more time between the two events than this year, so it should go much better from that perspective. So, please reply to this thread, or directly to the board, or to me, with your thoughts. This will also be a topic we'll discuss next week, in the next project meeting. And ideally, we'll be able to tell SUSE if we want to do something, and if yes, what. In terms of actual development goals (eg. https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Goals_12.3) I think that's a place for our contributors to decide and the board to keep their noses out of But aside from the day to day, practical goals, I do think we need to sit down as a project and do a much better job of communicating who we are, what we are setting out to achieve, and who we intend our distribution to be used by. I think there is some merit in your ideas for a more 'business-orientated' approach, targeting SME's and turning our focus to being the 'ideal' linux distribution for SME's to use and contribute back to. I think it's a bold and ambitious target, and as my own involvement in openSUSE originated from use in an SME, I certainly can't argue that we aren't already capable in that area. Deciding on that as our focus could help provide the refinement and polish to really achieve something in this space, and would certainly make my answer shorter when I'm at conferences and people endlessly ask me "Why should I use openSUSE?" But 'business' is boring, I feel we'd need to be careful not to lose our unique "Have a lot of fun" vibe if we (the community) decide to head in that direction. The concerns about the economic side of things already is setting of alarm bells for me, which we'd have to resolve before I'd consider such a direction viable. I personally think our greatest strength as a project and distribution is the fact we embrace 'Choice' The fact we explicitly don't define how you're meant to use openSUSE is a strength - Whether you're a user who wants a server, a KDE workstation, a GNOME workstation, an appliance, a tablet, a toaster, we build, we distribute, you decide But we're not like other "do whatever you want" distros like Debian. While we do take the current and best from upstream and dump it all on our users to play with, we have tools like YaST (and SUSE give us Studio) which exist to help make that decision and deployment process easier. We're the distro where a relative novice can turn up and say "I want my box to be a desktop and a webserver and a mailserver and a VOIP server all at once" and it's half a dozen button clicks away instead of a month digging through documentation and configuration files. I think we don't do a good enough job at getting that message out to people, and I sometimes think we forget it ourselves, occasionally thinking we're making it easier for our users by taking choices away from them, rather than instead making it easier for them to make those choices. To give a specific example, revamping the desktop selection screen with screenshots and better descriptions to make it easier for a novice user to make an informed choice between GNOME and KDE is something I'd really like to see. I'm not sure my vision of 'choice' necessarily is enough to be a goal in-of-itself, nor do I think it is mutually exclusive to other proposed goal, whether that be a move to becoming 'business-orientated' or something else. Wallpaper Contest Guidelines This is an official announcement of the wallpaper contest for openSUSE 12.3. Submissions are made to artwork team's flickr page http://www.flickr.com/groups/opensuse-artwork/ The format can be any image style you would like. Created with GIMP or Inkscape, or an original photo. They can all be considered. If the submission is not made in the Flickr page, it cannot be counted. If you don't have a Flickr page, ask any of our team members to help you submit your image. Given the amount of submissions so far this year(152 images so far), the artwork team will work on the selection of images in the following way. Our team members will be in charge of selecting the final 10 images for the selection of the rest of the community. We will present the 10 finalist images. Each voting member form our team will receive 10 points. These 10 points will be distributed across the images that such member selects as his/her best ones. You only have 10 points and nothing more, and you will run out of points after distributing those points across different images. If you are a contributor the artwork team and also the contest images, you cannot vote for yourself. The idea being to go out find other possible contributors to the team and there is no feeling that we pushing only for our own interests. To also show fairness to those who may be trying to be part of our team. For example Image 1: 3 pts Image 2: 5 pts Image 3: 2 pts TOTAL: 10 pts In order to vote you have to comment under the image in question on Flickr. You will add the comment saying: User X Comment: +1, +2, +5, etc We will be in charge also of counting the results. If you decide to change your mind about a particular image and would like to withdraw your points, you can do so by deleting the comment you made on a particular image. The excitement has been building for weeks and now the most important phase of the openSUSE Board elections begins today -- Election Time! Two seats are open for election by members of the openSUSE Project. The first seat is vacated by Henne Vogelsang who has completed his two-term limit. The second seat is currently held by Manu Gupta, appointed to fill in for Peter Linnel who stepped down in August of 2012. Both seats are for a two-year term that begins in January 2013 and ends in January 2015. How to Vote: If you are a current member of the openSUSE Project, you will soon receive an email with instructions on how to vote via openSUSE Connect polling system. You must be a member in good standing on or before 27 November 2012. If you have not yet received an email within the next 24 hours, please contact the Election Officials committee at election-officials(a)opensuse.org. Each eligible voter will be given two votes to cast, one for each seat to be elected in this cycle. Voting begins today and concludes at 23:00 UTC on 16 December 2012. [opensuse-project] SUSE-openSUSE relation: overview about financial decision processes

Hi, as I explained in a previous mail, in the past, besides the former Boosters team, there were other SUSE employees working full time in openSUSE with different roles. Now, everybody that works full time in openSUSE is concentrated in a single team, the openSUSE Team at SUSE, that is part of the R&D and Communities department. The above strategy has also been supported from the financial point of view. The economic decisions from SUSE that directly affects openSUSE have also being moved to this department. This move will take some time to consolidate but it is on its way. As I also wrote before, we are working at SUSE on our future actions we will execute as company to support the project/community. Some of those actions have to do with the relation we would like to develop with openSUSE from the financial perspective. We will open a discussion with the Board, through our Chairman, Vincent Untz, about processes to be followed in economic topics. I would like to advance "the framework" in this relevant moment, the Board elections. Until now, most (almost all) of the decision logic on financial matters was placed over SUSE's shoulders. We will propose some measures to transfer part of that logic step by step into the community. This process will be associated to the following concepts: * Agreements: we want to go through this process in agreement with the community. * Transparency: all the processes and decisions have to be done in a transparent way not just toward the community but toward SUSE and other possible sponsors. This mean that budgeting / reporting is a necessary requirement attached to this process. * Scalability: in order for this process to scale, it is necessary that all the financial procedures within the community have the Board as the final and starting point, so our relation with the community in this matter, in the same way that for other sponsors in the future, is routed through them. We understand that it is up to the community to define the relation between the Board and those who will have relation or will manage the economic resources, like the Travel Support Program, Ambassadors, Program etc. Until now, this relation has been directly established with SUSE. We also believe that this relation between Board and executors will be more efficient if it is simple, clear and have trust as an important ingredient. During the next months we have, at least, the following challenges to face from the financial point of view: * The Travel Support Program 2013 * The new Ambassadors Program * A new model for supporting our action in events * Hackathons We would like to encourage the new Board to work with us, facing those challenges together. We will propose that this process is complemented with a definition of the relation between the Board and those who are going to execute these actions. So, in summary, our relation with openSUSE in the financial area, will be routed through the Board step by step, so we all can learn with little pressure and clear direction. Organizing Programs like GSoC and other programs that encourage new contributors to come-in 2. Knowing where all the funds come from and into. Pretty much all that comes to us is from SUSE. But there are donations from the community during oSC's which are totally unaccounted for. I believe before a foundation comes into place, the Board should be able to keep a track of whatever little funds that come from other sources should be accountable to the community. 3. The idea is to help our contributors and voters to make choices that match a style guide. That way, the chosen artwork will achieve a sense of unity.
