That's something I was wondering too.
Personally, I get the RSS from the group and if there's a new post, I see it.
The only "problem" is that when someone starts a discussion, he must
use Public notification (at the bottom). The default is Logged Users.
So if someone doesn't check it out, then the post is private (I can
see it only when I log in).
The correct way to do that, is by mail (I think). If someone wants to
be notified for only one discussion, then he has to check a box or
something for that.
