[opensuse-project] Proposal for adapting the trademark guidelines

We had a couple of discussions in the past about how to improve the openSUSE trademark guidelines (see e.g. http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Trademark_guidelines or https://features.opensuse.org/311039) One of the main issues with the current guidelines is that it's very strict about derivatives, and doesn't easily allow people using openSUSE as a base for their own systems, to keep a visible association with openSUSE. So attached is a proposal how to adapt the trademark guidelines and provide a better solution to this issue. It also contains a few smaller clarifications. It's based on the input I was able to gather from the Wiki, openFATE, mailing lists and some personal feedback. It's a draft, so feedback is welcome. The central change is to allow people to create variants of openSUSE and use a "Based on openSUSE" branding under more liberal conditions than now. We would provide a specific branding for that, which keeps the relation to openSUSE, but is done in a way to not be confused with the branding of the official openSUSE distribution. Technically this would be a set of branding packages, which can be used instead of the default branding of the official distribution. Please let me know, if there is additional feedback on the proposed changes, so we can incorporate that, and then move forward with getting the needed approvals to officially adopt the improved guidelines. In parallel to that we can look into doing the proposed branding packages. This is one of probably several threads that will come out in the very near future revolving around the upcoming openSUSE 2011 Conference planning. This thread specifically focuses on discussion of the theme and program offered during the conference. Discussions beyond this topic should run in a separate thread or we'll end up with crazy threading. :-) Background: openSUSE Project will host its third annual openSUSE Conference at a site and date that has not been selected yet. The first conference, in September of 2009 focused on project discussions and addressing various aspects of governance. It was a more "internal" conference, but did have several good sessions as well. The second conference, held October 2010, came with an official theme "Collaboration Across Borders" and was much more session-oriented with 1 hour sessions on each topic. We extended beyond our internal community and invited others to join and collaborate on topics of mutual interest. Both were very good events in their own unique focus. Theme: What should be the theme of this year's conference? In yesterday's Project meeting on IRC it was expressed that we've already succeeded in using the collaboration theme and we should look beyond that for this coming event. Focus: In conjunction with the theme, how should the conference be structured? 2009 had a blend of sessions (not that many) and unconference where people created topics on-site and we had meetings that were set in 2-hour blocks. 2010 focused more on sessions (I believe we had 70?) and were pretty much pre-established before arriving on site. Though there was some flexibility to change a few things as needed. As we are time-constricted in getting everything properly prepared, I will create a deadline for ideas on Theme and Focus. Set for April 15. At that point, the CFP Team will evaluate the recommendations we all give here and apply it to the Call for Papers. Call for Papers: While date of conference/theme/focus greatly impact our CFP, we should nevertheless move forward and begin planning on the CFP call itself. CFP announcement should go out no later than April 27th with a probable deadline of mid-to-late July. We need volunteers to join the CFP Committee. Hi all, I haven't had any feedback on the draft CfP [1] I wrote nor on the guidelines for speakers [2]. Both had a couple of questions and concerns on the top which need answering, let me replicate the most important of them here. * do we schedule Discussions (as I've called the RW/BoF/Unconference style sessions) fully in advance? Or do we keep the CfP open until the conference? Or do we reserve a certain number of spots for at-the- conference scheduling? I vote for all three: keep the CfP open for these, schedule in advance but keep some slots for at the conference. * I think we should have workshops too. Then we have listen-participate- learn: Talks (traditional one-way), Discussions (bof/unconference/barcamp), Workshops. * 50 minute sessions make sense, with 10 min to change rooms? * It makes sense to allow Discussions and Workshops to ask several 1 hour slots imho... Yes? Furthermore, I believe Alan or Bryen will send a request to this ML for ideas on subjects for the conference (keep the treads separate pls). That means up to: 1 keynote per day, 4 total 5 talks/day, 20 total 5 workshops/day, 20 total (but several will last 2-4 hours so count on more like 10 workshops in total 10 Discussions/day, 40 total 5 SUSE Labs sessions/day, 20 total. Yep, counted very well, 84 total slots, probably like 75 sessions to be scheduled in total.

Planning has begun for this years openSUSE conference. Though a date hasn't been confirmed, there is still much to do and preparations that can be made. We really want to include as many community members as possible in the conference preparations, in leading the presentations and participating at the event. At last weeks program committee meeting, it was determined that the conference needs to build and strengthen our community as well as invite collaboration with other people and projects. To best accomplish this it is critical that the conference focus on topic areas that are of most interest to you, and so we are asking for your input. We, as the program committee, are reaching out to ask for your input to 2 questions: 1) What do you consider to be the top two or three current or upcoming topics, (e.g. in terms of technology major undertakings and tasks) that need to be addressed soon, and where one or more sessions during the conference could be helpful for collective brainstorming 2) To engender collaboration with the openSUSE.org project, who are the top two or three people/projects from outside of openSUSE.org that should be invited to the conference for close collaboration? [opensuse-project] Versionitis - Results (Or: The next openSUSE release is openSUSE 12.1)

The voting on how to do the versioning is over and the "old school" has won by 55 per cent (of 98 participants). Thanks to all that participated in the two votes and the discussion around the topic. As Coolo said in http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/2011-03/msg00516.html, we'd like to make a small change to the numbering: We will not have a .0 release but only .1, .2, .3 release. Since we have releases in three months, the November release is always the .1 release, the July release the .2 and the March release the .3. So, the plan is that the next release will be called openSUSE 12.1 and launched on the 10th of November, 2011! Two years later - on the 14th of November, 2013 - we will then have the openSUSE 13.1 release. So, the next four releases are: * November 2011: openSUSE 12.1 * July 2012: openSUSE 12.2 * March 2013: openSUSE 12.3 * November 2013: openSUSE 13.1 Detailed results for logged-in openSUSE members are available at the connect poll page and I have reproduced them here as well: * A: "old school": Like currently but only counting the right number until 3: 55% (54 votes) * B: "Fedora style": Just integers: 29 % (28 votes) * C: "Ubuntu style": YY.MM: 16 % (16 votes) This is also consistent with the results of thefirst public voting (see http://lizards.opensuse.org/2011/03/28/opensuse-release-versioning-poll-on- last-three-options/ ). Note that openSUSE does not have a major and minor numbering, even if it seems so. There is right now no difference in any way between what we would do for openSUSE 11.4 or 12.0 or 12.1 – and no sense to speak about openSUSE 11 or openSUSE 11 family. We also had in the past no process on how to name the next release (when to increase which parts of the number). I think this new versioning is still consistent with the old one but also an improvement since it's now clear that we change the first digit every two year. The first poll showed that half of our users prefer a date based versioning and the other a consecutive numbering. So, depending on your point of view, you can see this as a mixture of both or as consecutive numbering ;) So, time now to make openSUSE 12.1 a great release! Well I did try with the Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and with the same result, which is what I expected. Because if it was a DNS issue for some reason, it wouldn't be limited to zypper and openSUSE. As previously mentioned both yum and apt work perfect and fast in both functioning and downloading of packages. I freshly installed openSUSE last night and updated. The actual launch and function of zypper doesn't seem to be the issue. It definitely appears to be the downloading of packages as the actual noted download speeds of each package was VERY inconsistent. I suspect it's the mirror from where my packages are sourced. As I'm a relative newcomer to openSUSE, I have no idea how to check which server it is using for the sourcing of the packages. I am located in Queensland, Australia if it helps. Collaboration is important in many ways: * openSUSE is an open minded project that actively seeks collaboration with other open source projects * doing so at the conference makes it more visible in the press and marketing wise in general (as in: we know it's like that, but not everyone knows nor sees us like that just yet) * of course, it also gives us opportunities to get in touch with other people and projects who are not in the openSUSE community and not directly contributing to openSUSE, but still of high interest for current or future undertakings of our project, as well as to mutually benefit both our project and other open source projects Nevertheless, the openSUSE Conference in 2010 was felt as not making up enough time for topics that are specific to our project. As such, we agree that the focus needs to be shifted a bit more towards openSUSE itself. The team agreed on the following: * the motto is not critical right now, and may still be decided upon later, especially as it also involves other people in the community, such as the marketing and artwork teams * the program committee will request the support of the openSUSE marketing team for the motto, albeit the general theme of the conference will be decided by the program committee; also, the final say on the motto will remain with the committee, but only to veto in if it does not match the theme * the program committee will have as goal to reach a ratio of around 2/3 of sessions being openSUSE centric, and 1/3 about collaboration with other projects * for sessions on collaboration, we will reach out to projects and people who work on things that have a direct connection with what we do Bryen will contact the marketing team to gather their support on the conference motto. Format ~~~~~~ We had a few discussions and ideas about the format of the conference -- more specifically, how to organize the schedule and the sessions themselves. We agreed on the following: * the program committee will write up guidelines and good practices for presentations and BoFs (or what we call "read-only" and "read/write" sessions, respectively) to provide some support for speakers * the program committee will put a strong focus and favor "read/write" session proposals, as we believe that it provides more value to the community, give more people a chance to chime in with their ideas and experience, and also because we are (or at least try to be) an open project without much bureaucracy Venue ~~~~~ Neither the date nor the location of the conference are known at this time. Andreas Jaeger is currently actively seeking options in the area of Nürnberg in Germany, and we hope to have a solution very soon. The venue will have to have at least 5 distinct rooms (of which one will be used by the SUSE Labs conference) to provide sufficient capacity for the attendees, as well as enough flexibility to organize the schedule. Call for Papers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Not having the date nor the location at this point is a major hurdle for a Call for Papers. Indeed, most people will be reluctant to post a proposal if they don't know where and when. Nevertheless, making the Call for Papers is quite pressing, as it typically involves a somewhat longer period of time for people to send their proposals, as much as it needs to take a few days into account for the program committee to decide on those. Jos will write up a draft for the Call for Papers, which will then be quickly circulated across the conference committee for amendments. It will not be published just yet, as we prefer to have a confirmation on the date and the location before we do (for the reasons mentioned above.) The next program committee is next week, where we will decide what to do with the Call for Papers (publish or wait for the confirmation of location and date), especially if location and date are not known at that time. Alan will send out emails to several openSUSE mailing-lists to ask for input on * current or upcoming topics, e.g. in terms of technology * major undertakings and tasks that need to be addressed soon, and where one or more sessions during the conference could be helpful for collective brainstorming * people/projects to invite for close collaboration during the conference (e.g. systemd, smolt, OBS, Fedora marketing team, etc...) The program committee will collect a few proposals for topics/tracks in order to facilitate the submission of sessions during the Call for Papers phase. Infrastructure ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The cfp(a)opensuse.org mailing-list will be used again to contact the program committee as well as to submit proposals after the publication of the CfP (unless we come up with a better solution in the mean time.) Bryen will contact Henne (our mailing-list admin) to configure the mailing-list for the program committee for 2011. We also agreed on using Indico [1] again, mostly because it is already in place. Well I did try with the Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and with the same result, which is what I expected. Because if it was a DNS issue for some reason, it wouldn't be limited to zypper and openSUSE. As previously mentioned both yum and apt work perfect and fast in both functioning and downloading of packages. I freshly installed openSUSE last night and updated. The actual launch and function of zypper doesn't seem to be the issue. It definitely appears to be the downloading of packages as the actual noted download speeds of each package was VERY inconsistent. I suspect it's the mirror from where my packages are sourced. As I'm a relative newcomer to openSUSE, I have no idea how to check which server it is using for the sourcing of the packages. I am located in Queensland, Australia if it helps. I have a genuine question for the openSUSE folk. I recently switched from Red Hat to openSUSE 11.4. In a nutshell, I am very happy with the resulting system that I have running with the 2.6.37 Linux kernel. But I just can't understand one thing. What makes zypper so god damn slow when it comes to package management and installation of packages? In comparison to Red Hat's yum and Debian's apt, zypper is shockingly slow at anything it does. I'm curious as to why this is and why it can't be developed to match the speed of yum and apt. Can someone shed some light on this? Dear all! I want to create a news article for news.o.o and need a graphic that shows someone or something that people will connect with a person who is hiring somebody for his project or business. If anyone knows some free graphics (free = I can use them for news.o.o without any worries about hurting any others rights.) I would be very thankfull! Hi, Afaik the latest news on the next openSUSE conference is that AJ and Prusnak are looking for a decent location in resp. Nuremberg and Prague. They will come up with one or more proposals and the people who have stepped up for organizing will discuss and decide. Those people include afaik Klaas Saturday, ALan Clark, Bryen Yunashko, Izabel Valverde, Peter Linnel. AJ and Prusnak and some ppl from the SUSE Labs conference and myself. If you want to help out, add yourself to http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference_Planning_2011 I'm sure Prusnak and AJ would appreciate help, esp if you like in Nuremberg or Prague! Izabel just started on a sponsorship brochure, but we need a final location to be able to send that out - prusnak, aj, do your thing ;-) I volunteered to help out with marketing (as part of the marketing team) and the program committee. Hi all, I've received a few requests already from ppl asking "what will the next openSUSE release bring". Now I know a few things being worked on, from Webpin2 to the bretzn/appstream stuff. And of course the obvious "latest software packages". But I guess there are other ideas people would like to work on, right? Now I know, it's not done to advertise things when you don't know if they will be finished. But we're not a company, and if 5 of the 20 projects we say we're working on doesn't make it for the next release, well, that's not so strange. Not advertising anything because "we might not get it done" is bad for us - we're already seen as not-innovative and that's becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Nobody, after all, will join openSUSE development if it is seen as boring. So it will BE boring just because of that. We've done pretty OK with our 11.4 release in terms of features, so now people want to know more. Let's try and give them that. If you plan to work on something cool, say it. Don't keep hiding under that bloody rock just because you might not have time or because you think it's not important! Please give us marketing peeps something to talk about, so openSUSE will be seen as cool again and you'll see- self fulfilling prophecies can work FOR you too ;-) grtz /me who is annoyed that every ubuntu beta fart without any noteworthy feature still gets a dedicated article on his favorite dutch IT news site while a final openSUSE release doesn't get the slightest mention :(

AN OPEN PROPOSAL ON openSUSE VERSION NUMBERING: I have been giving the openSUSE version numbering issue some serious thought lately. I have come up with an interesting solution to the issue that I would like to propose to the community. I am in no way married to this idea but I do feel it is the best solution out of everything else that has been proposed. The core idea of the model that I am proposing is to have a set of minor number releases within an 8 month major number release cycle. I have outlined my idea to illustrate what I mean by this. 1) Every 8 months we should launch a major version number release. This would be kind of like Fedora does with their number every 6 months but ours would be every 8. (e.g. openSUSE 12.0) 2) After launch, we should release a new image(GoldMaster) with the updates/patches applied as a minor version number release, once a month for the next 4 months. This will help people who have not installed the major version release because of a bug to install a minor number release as bugs get patched. Also this will help to denote stability and maturity in the release (e.g. openSUSE 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4) 3) 2 months from the last minor number release we should release one more minor number(this will be 6 months from the original release of our major number)… this will mean the x.5 releases of openSUSE will earn a reputation and respect for being very stable (e.g. openSUSE 12.5) 4) After the x.5 release we should not release any more minor number images in preparation for our next major version number launch! I think this model would make our 8 month cycle more competitive while providing a more structured meaning to our version numbering and, more importantly, maintaining an identity of our own. Also this will show the fast development of our 8 month cycle. Some things to consider before deciding on or implementing this for our project: 1) The increased frequency of version numbering will mean we will have more opportunities to make noise about our distribution in a marketing sense. Also, the transition and change to this model will give use marketing opportunities to ensure the FOSS community knows of the changes before implementation. Keep in mind that more noise means more energy from our marketing team and ambassadors. 2) This is something that CAN be done however, we would need volunteers from the community to help with the added man power it will take to crank out the minor number releases. Though it may take some added effort to achieve this model, we have the infrastructure in place to help facilitate it (OBS, openFATE, Connect, Lizards blogs, Wiki pages, Forums, etc.). 3) The frequency of the minor number releases proposed above is NOT the heart of this proposal. Rather, it is a personal opinion on how the idea of interim(minor number) patched releases within our 8 month cycle can look. Hi all, I am writing my proposal here before uploading to the gsoc-melange portal , please do let me know how i can further refine it: Title: spec-cleaner redesign to make it modular and easy to extend. Abstract: RPM packaging is done using a build recipe , the "spec file". Spec file authoring has been done for a very long time. As the distribution moves to newer releases of rpm, the old spec files (and newer ones) must be checked to make sure they use newer macros and better spec authoring practices. The project aims to facilitate this by further improving the spec-cleaner project with a spec file parser, and an xml based extension system (to add more cleaning recipes in the future). Detailed Description: Background: The project is a simple spec file checker and cleaner. The code goes over all available spec files looking for common spec authoring errors and replaces them with more readable and correct code. As opensuse moves to newer versions of rpm, older macros may be deprecated , some shorthand used in earlier versions of the spec file may break with newer rpmbuild. It is not possible to manually look at each spec file and modify them. This project aims to perform a bunch of the checking and modification task automatically leaving the packager to look for only subtle details, there by greatly reducing his/her workload. Use Cases: This project will mainly be used by the packagers (actors). When opensuse moves to newer releases the packagers run the spec-cleaner through all their spec files. Spec-cleaner reports any errors along with changes made to files. The packager can then run tests on the modified spec files to make sure nothing breaks. He/she then rpmbuilds from the spec-files and corrects small errors if any to make the spec file run with newer versions of rpm. Benefits: The packager's time looking for common coding errors is greatly reduced. Specification changes between different version of rpms is taken care of automatically. Caveats: This is an automatic code checker and cleaner. It will not be able to look for hacks that the packager might have employed to package a particular software. In some cases it might regard the hack as a bad coding practice. The packager must look for these manually and apply necessary corrections. Technical Details: The Project would be divided into 3 parts: Part 1: Read existing code and evaluate how best to modularize it. Run tests on existing code to make sure the working and the caveats are well understood. Part 2: Implement the changes: Write a spec file parser Having done a preliminary search for spec file parsers , i have not found any. I have looked at python-rpm and its more of a package to work with rpm packages than spec files, so there arises a need for a generic spec file parser. python-rpm and rpm in general contains a specific module called "rpmSpecParse()" which could be isolated and used as a parser for the cleaner, this needs further looking into. Come up with a XML schema which is easy to understand and easy to extend. Adding new clean-up recipes is not very semantically organized. A simple XML file wrapping new cleaning recipes in appropriate tags would be more appropriate. The rough markup could be , <recipe> <rpm version> <macro affected> <regexp> </regexp> <replace with> </replace with> </macro affected> </rpm version> </recipe> Move portions of current spec-cleaner code that are hard coded , into separate configuration files so that they can be modified without touching the code and also have more semantically organized. Part 3: Extend available test cases and write a more if time permits. Write documentation / augment the code written with doxygen headers. Why me: I have used python extensively in my projects (reference https://github.com/face-rec-mvit/Code_PyRec ) also i am working on converting IPS (opensolaris) binary packages to RPM, for belenix.org (here we use rpm5) so i have a fair understanding of how the spec file is authored and what are the available macros etc. Also , from past projects i have worked on. I have learnt (the hardway :( ) that "shipping" of the project must be a feature and i will follow the same in the current spec-cleaner project and all future projects. Hi, My name is Priyanka. I am in my second year of B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology), in Computer Science. My inclinations are towards C, C++, PHP and Ruby-on-Rails. I am also comfortable with git. I am strongly inclined to apply to openSUSE for GSoC. The idea that interested me was the End-User Oriented Web Interface. Currently the user page is extremely limited to displaying the projects the user is a part of. I propose the following changes in the interface, Expansion of the User Profile ------------------------------------------ * Expanding the user profile to include profiles on GitHub, Gitorious, Ohloh. * The ability to pull the recent activity done by the user on these websites. This would be great if the user has a couple of famous repositories. * IRC networks, and channels frequented. * An 'about me' text. * An ability for users to comment on the user activities, which include apart from their usual activities on the build-service, other things which have been pulled, like github commits, etc. Karma ---------- I believe there should be a 'Karma' system on the build-service. This would encourage users to contribute. * For example, if a user is working on a personal repository and pushes a bug-fix or the implementation of a new-features, he/she can be rewarded with Karma. This Karma can be attained either by 'up-votes', or by other members donating their own Karma. * Ohloh's statistics using their public API can be used for getting Karma too. * Karma can be auto-assigned to maintainers of popular packages, etc. And it all gets gelled up to be a more informative user page, which helps people know each other more. With the user's development activities getting space on his/her homepage, the end-users would be able to connect with the user's open-source work. This would help add an element of interaction to the process. The Karma component is an essential element to this interaction because the community recognizes an individual's effort. And we all can do with a little praise :-) Background Information ---------------------------------- I have already set up the development environment, I even reported a bug in the Build Service to Sascha :-) My experience with web-development has been using Rails and PHP for college activities like online treasure hunts, etc. However, I am into serious development as well. I have been working on a Q & A application using MongoDB as a NoSQL database. [0] The proposal is an informal one. I would be polishing it, and include a time line, where I will be breaking the work down, as far as possible, into atomic modules with realistic deadlines. Hello opensuse-projects! I learned just today that I won't have a lot to do in summer. So I want to try and commit myself to open source and openSUSE! I have put up a preliminary application at http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/proposal/review/google/gsoc2011/nei/1 The project that I'm talking about is a convenient way to update and install packages on a "offline" openSUSE box. (Of course the intermediate step with an "online" computer is unavoidable if you don't want to mirror all the repos for offline usage. Also, I have the feeling that this might already exist somewhere but I haven't found it yet :-) ) I'm hoping to see if anyone is interested in this project or thinks that this would be useful. If so, I'd also be lacking a mentor ;-) Looking forward to feedback! To introduce myself, I've been using SuSE some time back in 2001 and since 10.2 also openSUSE. I'm mostly a user and I wrote some scripts for personal use or for IRC. Currently a student in Leipzig, Germany. I've been in touch with freely available source code for a while, probably 1999 when I was working with iKonboard setting up a web community and later on providing free tech support for phpBB, before I switched to mostly administration tasks on then debian-based webservers. Most of the programming work I've done happened to be in Perl, if that has any meaning. But so far I didn't manage to get involved in anything big. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Offline Package Management for OpenSUSE

Hello, I am gigih aji ibrahim from University of Indonesia, I am interested for applying OpenSUSE GSoC project. My idea is to create offline package management for OpenSUSE. Currently, when your computer is not connected to network, installing and updating a package is difficult process. As example, I want to upgrade my firefox to version 4 in openSUSE 11.4, I usually go to http://software.opensuse.org/114/en, type 'Firefox', and get the .rpm file. However, when I run 'sudo rpm -Uvh' on my computer, the process stopped and give error that you need a new mozilla-xulrunner20. Then, the next day, I download mozilla-xulrunner20. Now, the error is little different, it says I need a new mozilla-js20. I do the same routine again to fulfill all dependencies for new Firefox. I spend 4 days just to install new Firefox. My friend that use ubuntu is having more easy process than mine. He just use offline package management called keryx (http://keryxproject.org/) to update his computer. Unfortunately, keryx only support distribution that use apt/deb. My idea is to extend keryx to implement zypper/rpm support. COLOR MANAGEMENT BACKGROUND Many a times, it is observed that an image as seen on a monitor may have color variations when printed. Or a scanned image appears differently when seen on monitor etc. All these are examples of color mismatch or poor color management. Users are looking for color predictability and consistency. We would like a colored page to be reproducible on a variety of technologies / devices / mediums with consistent results. In order to get similar results, we must ensure that a colors match their colorimetric ( or standardized like CIE ) values on different devices, and hence different color values need to be sent to different devices ( like monitor for a pc, a printer, a plotter , or may be a mobile or ipad screen, since every device perceives colors differently ) or applications ( say, gimp or photoshop ) for maintaining consistency. Thus, we need a way to take the values that represent the desired color on one device ( called technically as input profile ) and change it to corresponding value on other device ( or output profiles, as ICC calls them ).Also a reference is also needed so that conversion is consistent( commonly called profile connection space ( PCS), and generally internationally accepted reference standards are used ). The transformation is done by a generic transform mechanism using a color matching module or color matching method (CMM). A CMM is a part of larger software called color management system (CMS). A cms ensures that colors remain same regardless of the device or medium used to display colors. PROBLEM BACKGROUND There are a plenty of color - viewing- mediums in the market ( mediums may be different devices like monitors, scanners, printers, or they may be applications like gimp or may be a Smartphone screen, the only needed thing is that it should support colors in some way or the other ). And each one perceives colors differently. So, whenever images are transferred from one of these mediums to another, they have (standardized) attached profiles so that this conversion is smooth and not a large difference is observed in the colors. Thus, we require correct ( and the best ) profiles to correctly handle colors transformations. Systems like windows and mac have inbuilt color management modules at os level, so that these conversions and profiling are done automatically. However, in linux, color management is not implemented at os level, hence associated profiles and transformations are not very efficient. Hence I propose to build a cross platform solution for obtaining and using best profiles by applications / devices automatically. ( Here’s a small example ) ( suppose you take a picture from your android phone and transfer it to pc for manipulation using gimp or for taking a print out. Now, phone perceives colors in a different way, and your monitor screen ( in case of gimp ) or printer perceives colors differently. Hence, when picture is transferred to pc, a profile is sent along. If you open it using gimp, it is duty of gimp to transfer the image data accordingly to monitor profile so that you view the colors consistently. If you want to take a print out, then it is duty of printer settings to do conversion accordingly. But for best conversion, we need the best possible profile attached. BASIC IDEA The basic idea is the creation of a central repository and a web front end as well as small command line interface + GUI on client systems. Whenever, users open color management application on their computer, then they will have an option to get the best profile from the web matching their device. Also, they will have an option to send and share their profiles with others. Web front end will be a kind of wiki, where users will rate and comment on the profiles, also they can ask their questions and where web statistics regarding color devices and management will be shown. This central database / repository will be linked with CMS like oyranosCMS etc and various front- ends like kolor-manager through the client library. An independent client GUI application will also be developed. Use Cases Typical users should not care about color management of their devices. Their configuration will be handled automatically with little interaction. For amateurs, who do not own an expensive measurement device, it can make color management under Linux affordable and popular. For experts, it will be a nice way of sharing the best profiles Companies can directly put the pre configured profiles matching devices etc in our database. Technical following projects: We can Integrate the new system into various setup tools like printer setup, or integrate over the Color management solutions etc. Benefits: The proposed system will have many benefits. I am presenting some, but others can be easily thought. 1. HOME USERS Optimization will be a big thing. You can take full advantage of your printers, scanners etc. the proposed system will enable it to download and use the best profile relating to your scanner and printer. Thus, enabling to publish or print the image with original colors preserved. Normal users can very easily and conveniently download and configure various profiles for different hardware devices like printers, scanners, phones, pads etc. It will enable much better sharing of colored images, videos etc. Users need not worry about the technical details and whatever colors they have picked will be served even if they change the viewing application or device. 2. SMALL TO MID RANGE BUSINESS Small to mid range business for color related tasks like printing shops etc will be beneficial as they can get best profiles written by experts for free ( as against buying profiles ). Thus, using linux as a medium for color management will be affordable and cheap. 3. MANUFACTURERS They can put their profiles in our central database directly, whereby, it will be very convenient for users to have the best profiles. 4. It will act as an already made repository for fetching icc files ( like repositories in opensuse ) for future color management systems. In short, I would like a way for every application on Linux to implement the best color possible by connecting it to a centralized CMS like oyranos, lcms and then getting the best possible profile according to the hardware it’s going to work on, from the net, automatically. The best benefit is to end user, who will be able to exploit the hardware devices fully with best available profiles available for them. Technical Details and Implementation The whole project is divided in different stages. I will explain the stages one by one giving their working. 1. MAKING OF CENTRAL DATABASE. A relational database and a file system as a part of project will be implemented. Relational database will have necessary meta data about profiles, devices, hardware, drivers etc. since expected number of profiles can run into thousands, hence they are not directly stored in database, but in some file ( like xml files ) on file system. Only, concerned Meta data will be stored in database. File system for storing profiles will have hierarchical structure. LEVEL - 1 = / ( root of the application ) ( directory ) LEVEL - 2 = different types of devices (like monitors, printers etc ) ( directory ) LEVEL - 3 = manufacturer of the device ( like hp, canon etc ) ( directory ) LEVEL - 4 = specifications ( like make, model etc ) ( directory ) LEVEL - 5 = here the profile's file will stay. ( files ) BENEFITS OF THIS APPROACH : 1. POSSIBLE TO EXPAND AND CONTRACT THE TREE. 2. EASE OF BACKUP 3. CAN STORE QUITE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION DRAWBACKS 1. Possible searching time can be more, if profiles amount is less. The final structure and schema of database will be finalized after discussion with mentor, community and going through the minute database structure of CMS Like oyranos , lcms etc( oyranos uses a similar database structure as proposed here). I will do it before 23 may i.e. before coding starts. 2. WRITING SERVER SIDE CODE ( SERVER API'S FOR ACCESSING DATABASE BOTH FROM WEBSITE AS WELL AS FROM END USER'S REQUEST ) Basically, all coding for inserting, deleting , selecting or updating the database will be done through this layer. Both website as well as requests coming from the users will be referencing the code here. This approach has advantages 1. Direct access to database is not provided so that nobody cannot modify database in illegal manner or inconsistent manner. 2. A uniform platform for all data related tasks - so these api's can be called from anywhere. 3. Even tomorrow if we have to change the database, then it will be very easy as the coding is generic and scalable for future changes 4. Helps in maintaining and extending the code easily. 5. Easy to understand and flexible. 6. Business rules can be made here. For example, we do not won’t that a duplicate profile should be stored in our data base systems, then we can make coding accordingly here. 3. WRITING CLIENT SIDE LIBRARY FOR ACCESSING THE DATABASE + MAKING OF CLI. This will be made in c/c++ . Purpose of this library will be to exchange the data with central database and share and get profiles. Medium of data import / export will be either xml or json. This library will be responsible for all database related tasks and will act as an intermediate between central database and client applications. It will provide data to requesting to client app’s like CLI or various CMS like oyranos, lcms etc. this is essential because it will provide a consistent api so that in future this code can be easily integrated with cms directly or with front- ends like kolor-manager or gnome-color-manager. 4. MAKING OF WEB SITE. The website part will be either in php/ python. Either it can be made from scratch or can be made from other content management solutions like drupal / joomla / django. Main tasks performed here will be 1. Comments and rating of profiles 2. Display statistics for various profiles / hardware. 3. Getting the expert help. 4. Users can add new profiles to central database from here. 5. Users can download the best profile matching their device from here. 5. WRITING THE GUI FOR THE CLIENT SIDE, (PROBABLY CROSS – PLATFORM). Now, client side api’s already written, it’s time to write the client side GUI probably in QT, which will be totally cross platform so that application runs on gnome or kde equally well. 6. INTEGRATION WITH KOLOR MANAGER + WRITING A WRAPPER LIBRARY FOR OYRANOS. lastly, i would love to take this opportunity to integrate the code with the applications like kolor-manager and various databases running at os level like oyranos, so that they can select the best profile matching hardware on client’s system themselves automatically. TIMELINE BEFORE MAY 23 – finalise the database structure and schema. Making use case diagrams , finalizing classes ( in short, completeion of SRS ). Also, reading and understanding of documentation of various color management systems. May 23 – may 29 – making database, writing stored procedures , triggers etc ( wherever necessary ). May 30 – june 5 – 1st week of writing server side code ( start ) June 6 – june 12 – 2nd week of writing server side code. ( finalizing server side code, testing etc ) June 13 – june 19 – 1st week on client side library. ( start ) June 20 – june 26 – 2nd week of writing client side library. ( finalizing and testing ) June 27 – july 3 – 3rd week of client side code.( integration with oyranos, and making and testing command line interface, also populating the central database with CLI ). July 4 – july 11 - 4th week of client coding. Making a small qt application or integrating with already exists GUI like Kolor-manager. JULY 11 - INTERMEDIATE EVALUATION July 11 – july 17 – 1st week of starting of website (making users, administrators etc ). July 18 – july 24 – 2nd week of website. ( displaying the statistics, profiles, making the comment and rating system ) July 25 – july 31 – 3rd week of website. ( making comment system,rating system etc and administrator pages etc ) August 1 – august 7 – 4th week of website. ( giving final touches, improving css etc ) AUGUST 8 – 15 ie A PERIOD OF 2 WEEKS HAVE BEEN KEPT AS A BUFFER PERIOD. If anything goes wrong or is delayed, then it will be corrected in this period. Else, I will go ahead and start integrating with the other CMS like AgryllCMS etc. Why Me 1. I have good experience in making websites for my college. I know php/ python , sql, html, css, js and jquery. I am eager to learn django or drupal and will learn one of the cms before gsoc starts. ( it will also benefit me in making other sites after gsoc, so learning one is on my radar ). 2. I am learning QT as a part of current curriculum at the university will have gained a significant experience in it before gsoc starts. 3. I have a good grasp of C and C++. 4. I am hardworking, dedicated and know how to find my way once pointed in the right direction. 5. I am free during the summers and have no other preoccupation , except an hour of running/exercise in the morning. 6. I am fluent in English so I would not have any problems with the conversations with the mentors, I speak Hindi and Punjabi as well. 7. I have talked extensively with my mentor on irc and through mail so that project is clear to me. 8. I have searched a lot of and proposed various new things, discussed the topic extensively and proposed the best thing possible for this project. [opensuse-project] GSOC Idea: Command line client for SSC

Hi, I'd like to work on the improvement of the Suse Studio command line client(ssc) idea for GSOC this year. I've gone through the current ssc code but found no documentation on it. Is there someone here I can talk to who has worked on it and would know what is lacking. It would help me formulate a detailed project proposal. As I see it I'd first write a wrapper for the suse studio api(http://susestudio.com/help/api/v1) and a command like client to use the wrapper. It would be a good idea to separate the two so that the wrapper can be used programatically as well. Let me know what you think. One of my most common usages for sax2 was something like "sax2 -r -m 0=fbdev" whenever I'd bork fglrx. A few releases ago, when I had a radeon 200m, the radeon module didn't work at all, so it used to be a hair simpler to use sax to switch modules for me. Making sax3 as much cli-oriented as well as the sax3 gui would help. Agreed, however I think sax3 should use the xorg.conf.d, splitting the sections up in to files, and not making one big nasty xorg.conf like sax2 did. As crazy as the question might sound, would it be possible to merge xrandr with sax3? So for example, if the user asks for a change that can be done with KMS, to do the change immediately (if the user agrees) and/or to write it to the xorg.conf.d at the same time? That way there'd be just one central place to go to for playing around with monitors? Accompanying sax3, there'd be a yast-sax3 module, right (this would benefit new users, primarly), and it would be re-integrated in to the non-automatic configuration during the installation process?
