As pointed out by James Ots [1], subpixel hinting is disabled in the SUSE freetype2 packages because it might infringe software patents owned by Microsoft (see [2] for details). As software patents are not applicable nor enforceable in Europe, I could build them with enabled subpixel hinting and host them in my repository (hosted in Germany)... right ? Hello, I think that openSUSE is a distributions for individual users, who want freedom of choice, a rich software repository and the possibility to actually feel free of doing what they want with their PC, even if they're not experienced users.
