I have been complaining for a few days about the front-page craziness with us. My main problem that there was WAY too much going on (on http://en.opensuse.org) for a home page of a site. New users want just the few vital links, and I think you've done it pretty nicely there. A few things:
* The front-page will either have to have some type of text/graphic openSUSE banner, or have a bigger openSUSE logo, I think. As it is now it's a little tucked away.
* I'm wondering about 'Discover it'. Perhaps that whole thing should be changed to a Support one, where the support page links to Documentation and Community-related support areas (IRC, Forums; basically, Communicate page). Or maybe "Wiki" should be changed to "Documentation"? I'm not really sure.
* Also, I'm not sure that the countrycode is necessary before the actual language. i.e. so just have "English" instead of "en - English".
* With regard to the OBS, I'm not sure we want all standard users to have the 'create it' thrown at them, since creation of packages etc is only for developers. Maybe that should be changed to a 'Participate' or "Get Involved" etc which in turn would have all the methods of getting involved (packaging, documentation, artwork, etc).
Hm, I'm wondering if this should've gone on the -wiki list with the discussion about the other site mockup proposal.
Anyhow, nice stuff 8)

The upstream maintainer decided to disable some algorithm as he thinks it might infringe patents. This happened just incidentally close to the Novell-Microsoft agreement. Neither Novell nor openSUSE didn't do anything. See also: http://www.novell.com/prblogs/?p=318

We did not remove cleartype actively!
The upstream author had it enabled by default in 10.1 - and the upstream author changed the default for the package we used in 10.2 and thereby it was disabled. And then we did not enable it again based on the comments of the upstream author.
Btw. this was discussed on the opensuse mailing list the last day...

To me, the author of that article appears just one more who did not understand the Novell-MS deal. Novell did NOT get a Patent License (AFAI understood), but only 'bought' the guarantee that, should Novell infringe any patents, the Novell Users will not be sued. This will by no way allow Novell just to go on and infringe all MS patents. Why: only the Novell-USERS can not be sued. There was not a single word written that NOVELL can not be SUED... which, in fact, anyhow would be much more likely than MS suing any single user of any Linux distro.
But it's like this... bloggers blog to blog... but many just don't read and understand what about they blog. sometimes a really bad story.

Nice. Even if you are color-blinded, like me. Good job. (See Attachment)

All very good, Rajko, but I feel there should be a link to the Portal (indexing project) http://en.opensuse.org/Portal somewhere in the main page. That often saves me a great deal of search time on the opensuse site.

Superb.. so web 2.0 :-)
Seriously, they're very good.

I really like your proposal but I would use the same color (green?) in all pages. I think that look and feel should be consistent in all web pages and that implies the color used.

I like the look and feel, but I don't think this is the right approach with the simple user in mind. The "Create it" is not appealing to this type of user. This could be a bar underneath the two blocks, separated by a line and words like "Advanced user and developer".
Behind the "Dowload it" and "Discover it", there again should be information directed to the simple user and the advanced user. At this level Download will become Download and Installation. Discover will become Use and Howto. On the third level for the simple user there should be a categorization of different types of users. a. E-mail and web users. b. Office users c. Picture and graphics users d. Sound users. e. Video users f. etc...
In my view the simple user should just be exposed to cookbook type of information with an if then else type of guidance.
My 2 cents.

The design is by Robert Lihm that he published on his user page. I thought that User:Rlihm is clear enough whom to say thank you. The discussion is in opensuse-wiki mail group.
