[opensuse-project] download.openSUSE.org mirrors
Hi everyone, the attached mail just went out to our mirror admins. In case you are mirroring ftp.openSUSE.org and didn't get this email, contact me off-list. Thanks, Christoph ----- Forwarded message from Christoph Thiel <cthiel@suse.de> ----- Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 11:41:46 +0200 From: Christoph Thiel <cthiel@suse.de> Subject: [suse-mirror] download.openSUSE.org mirrors Dear mirror-admins, as you might know, we have been promoting download.openSUSE.org as our central "download redirector" for openSUSE.org. Over the last year or so, the infrastrcuture behind download.openSUSE.org has been improved significantly. With the current setup we are now able to handle hunders of mirrors from all over the world. If you are interested in a more detailed description of the download redirector and the logic behind it, refer to http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/Redirector I'm contacting you today, to help me review the list of mirrors, which are currently being used by download.openSUSE.org. Please have a look at the attached mirrors.txt [1], to figure out if your mirror is listed. In case you are mirroring ftp.openSUSE.org and can't find your mirror in mirrors.txt, contact me off-list, so I can add you to the database! Here are some addition thoughts: - Please consider offering the mirrored files through HTTP, in case you aren't doing so already. (We only redirect to HTTP mirrors!) - If large file support (>2G) doesn't work on your HTTP server, please let us know - Keep the directory structure intact, so it is identical to the structure found below ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/. Otherwise we can't redirect to it. Thanks, Christoph [1] In case you are wondering what scan_speed stands for: It's the number of files the scanner (our crawler) was able to scan per second. -- Christoph Thiel, Tech. 1) just as a notice: many mirrors have a "ftp" in they name, even if they feed as http. This is misleading. think of making any alias type to http (in fact anything but "ftp"), and quote in red what you said "we only redirect http mirrors" 2) don't you think download... (source and update) should be hard coded in yast (anybody can stop them if needed, no need to delete them) so most installs whould work out of the box :-) 3) I have regular problems with at least one mirror (lea), probably overcharged - it should be clear how to report such problem (minor, but boring) thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Lucien Dodin, inventeur http://lucien.dodin.net/index.shtml --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

We are only redirector on HTTP-basis. I.e. users request a file via HTTP, so we throw them at a HTTP-Server (regardless of the hostname of the mirror.)
2) don't you think download... (source and update) should be hard coded in yast (anybody can stop them if needed, no need to delete them)

We have been considering this...

Which mirror are you refering to? Did you get redirected to it by download.openSUSE.org? Best, Christoph -- Christoph Thiel, Tech. yes
OK -- I don't see any mirror that could match "lea" in our current configuration, so the problem is most likely gone. If not, please file a bugreport on bugzilla.novell.com Thanks, Christoph -- Christoph Thiel, Tech.
