Suse 8.2 kernel recompile

i've tried to compile my own kernel in this way 1. install source of 2.4.20 from suse 8.2 dvd 2. do a "make xconfig" in /usr/src/linux as usual 3. load configuration file from /boot/vmlinuz.config 4. remove some driver that i don't need 5. save 6. make dep 7. make bzImage 8. make modules 9. make modules_install after a while the kernel seems to be ok but a depmod -a told me that raiser-fs module cannot be found.. but i DON'T remove raiser-fs modules!!! ok i tried to edit anyway my grub config file copying bzImage on /boot dir and reboot next boot i recive a kernel panic on reiser fs... oh yes it is missed!! why? anyone know where is my fault? thanks

Boot problem after accidental poweroff

Hi I have problem with my home pc, my daughter accidentally powered off my pc while I was in the middle of a Palm hot sync and now when it is rebooting it hangs on the loading hot plug devices, what steps should I take to get my pc back up and running. I tried to boot from the cd and do the rescue option but I can't mount the partition on the hard disk. I don't want to reinstall and this all happened just before I was about to backup my pc overnight what luck I have. Is there a check disk utility I can run in SuSE ? I am running SuSE 8.2 with all the latest patches. INstall question - no network card

I was playing around with installing SuSE 8.2 from cd. All went fine except my netowrk card could not be configured. Now on another system I installed the same card after intial install and it works fine, so I assume there is an update that cures this. How do I get the updates without a network? It's a dual boot so I could download them to a windows directory but how do I tell YaST to use them? Would the updates I need to somewhere on my other installation? That would save time hunting the ones I need. Mark B

yes, actually you'll have a problem if you have only dialup, because a basic install would be around 200Mb :( unless you have a friend wgo could retrieve the FTP directory on a HDD in order to be able to perform a HDD install, ftp/hdd install is not an option for you :( I based my recomandation upon the fact that I've noticed differences between packages and even between the boot files... Its very, very fast and feels quite stable; certainly no interesting problems such as trying to mount the partitions in a different format which was what occured with some of the later versions of 2.5. There are however quite a few rough spots, wifi pcmcia card support appears broken and it wont recognise that theres an optical mouse attached to the USB port. I havnt been allowed to run it on one of our production servers yet so I cant say what the improvements are their, but I think we'll be in for a treat with the first 2.6 release. Regards, Ben

How to setup a network with a Suse server and windows computers

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me some web sites where I could find information on how to setup a network. We are going to buy a server for our lab and connect our desktops running WXP to it. The idea is that every user could use any computer without having problems with the desktop configuration and the files stored. Because now we have five independent PC and if someone uses and saves his files in a particular computer he has to work there always because he has no shared harddrive... :-\ It is really a problem. I hope someone could give me some info and help thanks Jose PS: also if someone could recomend me a server to buy will be excellent. We have 10 users and the server will be used for the purpose I just explain and also as a mail and web sever.

crashed partition table & lost reiser

Hi all, I've had a partition table crash... but thx to gpart I'v got the 3 primary partitions back. hda2 is an extended partition wich contains a swap partition and a reiserfs partition. gpart also found the swap, but didn't find the reiser. I tried approximately every option for gpart, without any succes thus far. I also tried some reiserfs tools on hda2, hoping one of them would be able to find some-thing, any-thing that resembles parts of the reiserfs. No succes. It came back with the respons it couldn't read the block. I understand it's reaction, because i ask it to check a partition (hda2) that hasn't got a filesystem. what i do know is approximately the place where the partition should start, and so where the filesystem should be found. What i would like to know is wether there is some way to scan that area form the disc, en find some indication from the reiserfs. Because I approximately know the place where it should start, i tried to define the logical partition overthere. I did two attempts, then stopped because i suddenly realized that i was not poking in my normal partition table, but that i might be poking in data blocks, when i tried wrong sector numbers. any tips are very welcome. boot manager woes

Hello all, I asked about this last week and got no reply, but seeing as how i have just managed to make both my XP & SuSe partitions unbootable i thought i should ask for some advice again! Ok, i have suse on its own hd on my primary ide. Xp is on my promise FastTrak 376 controller. Until this afternoon, I booted by selecting the drive in the bios and then either going through lilo, or the xp boot manager. Now i've tried fiddling with my lilo conf until i was blue in the face, but i couldn't get it to recognise the XP drive (even though i could see it perfectly well in linux), so i thought: "well why don't i put lilo on the xp drive and since it would be installed on the sata drive, maybe it would find booting onto it easier". so i did lilo -m /dev/sda. i think - i can't check as i can't boot into linux! anyway i rewrote the mbr... presumably with a linux version or something so i broke my xp drive. in the process of trying to fix it (which i now have as i can write this!) i over wrote lilo with the xp mbr. So my question is, what is the best solution - can i install lilo on the drive that linux isn't on? and would that help my lack of booting onto my sata drive? or am i just being stupid and just need to fix my original lilo install? and any tips on howto make my suse partition bootable again would be most helpful! thanks! Well, I'm hoping someone can give me a hint because I'm lost. Konq has lost the ability to convert cd's into mp3. Yes, I have lame and cdparanoia installed. When I click on Audio CD Browser it says that audiocd:/ protocal not supported. I've also seemed to misplace kscd in that last package switch/breakdown/fuckwithben thing with the 3.1.3 packages that have been further broken down into smaller packages. I know that it's good to get things more modular but this switching package schemes everytime KDE has a dot release is getting old. PHP Safe Mode ?

Hi all,,, I'm having hell with this !"§$ PHP safe mode. It seems that SuSE complies PHP with safe mode = on. THEREFORE the config file "php.ini" can not turn it off. Can someone who is using PHP & exec in SuSE 8.2 give me an idea how they are doing it? OR how to work around this. XFree DRI fails - why?

Hi all, I have a Radeon 7500 AGP card with SuSE 8.2 Pro, stock k_athlon kernel. It worked a charm when I installed, hardware 3D and everything. Today, for the first time in more than a month, I wanted to play a quick round of Tuxracer - slow as a dog. Somewhere along the line something broke, I suspect with a YOU update. new print port issue Samba printing

Newbie SuSE 8.2 Samba 2.2.7aSuSE I'm having problems with two printer ports I added after configuring my machine. I added a dual printer port card (after much struggle and lots of help). Printing works printing from Linux. I cannot print from windows. I can browse the printers, I can add the printer. When I go to print it acts like I am not connected. With win2K in the status line I get "permission denied", but that may be erroneous. Printer on first port works fine. Cups does not detect printers on new card -- they are old dot matrix -- but they still print just fine from Linux. Configuration in smb.conf for all printers is identical. Thanks Mark B.

Mounting a memory stick reader

I have a 128 Mb memory stick from a Sony camera. hwinfo can see the stick and its geometry as a "disk". However, mount requests that I specify a file system type. I have no idea what the format is. I have tried fat, vfat, msdos, umsdos, but none work. I even tried autofs and got the mount help print out. Any ideas appreciated. Ed Harrison

SuSE 7.3 is detecting 120GB hd with wrong size 1.8TB

hi, My suse 7.3 is detecting my WD Cavier HD WD1200JB with improper size but the HD id is detected properly (WD1200JB..). My bios for the computer also detected the id properly but size detected was 45GB and suse's detection was 1.8TB instead of 120GB. I was able to partition and mount the drive with size below ~110GB. Anything above that it will not work. I guess i could just leave it like that and not fully utilize my 120 gb, but i don't think this should be properly done. Anyone have any suggestion how to solve this problem? thanks henry

Yello! Using SuSE 8.2 Pro, with KDE 3.1.3 (current with SuSE supplemental RPMs), including the latest cdbakeoven RPM from the supplementary section on the FTP. When using SuSE 8.1, I burned a few albums from wav files using cdbakeoven, but mostly use it to burn backups of files. I'm now trying to make a CD again for the first time in a while. But cdbakeoven is griping that "libkcm_audiocd.la" can't be found when I go to set the audio settings in the program. Google is my friend, and I found this was in the kdebase3 package, at least in the 3.0 version. But apparently not in KDE 3.1.3. Odd. Any ideas on how to deal with this? I want to fix it, not get recommendations on other CD burn programs. I'm already aware of them, but I'd rather get cdbakeoven working. Strange Network Card Failure

Hi, I have Intel Server 875WP-1 server m/b with P4/2.4, 1 GB ECC RAM, Dual fast Ethernet on-board, and SuSE 8.2. The Ethernet adapters are recognized and configured by YaST without any problem. However, here comes the strangest thing. None of them really work, running "rcnetwork restart" results failure for one or both adapters. Even if no failure reported, they still do not work. I have installed another Realtec based Ethernet card into PCI slot, "rcnetwork restart" does not throws failure, but network still do not work. I have checked cables, switch port, another PC works without any problem. Additionally, I have disabled hyperthreading, removed k_smp kernel, upgraded all RPMs latest version from SuSE ftp (including kernel), but it did not helped either. My be 3ware RAID controller is the culprit? It seem to work fine, I have installed SuSE 8.2 on it (RAID Level 5 config). Printing ps files w/ 8.2

I've just switched to cups as print server. It's very nice except for one strange thing. There are some ps files that won't print! I send them to the printer, they're in the queue and the seem to be printed - they just never actually come out as paper. I can't see any real difference between the ones that will and the ones that won't - they both look OK with gs. I can't see any trace of them; no entry in any log. If I convert the nonprinting files with ps2pdf or ps2ps they print fine too. What is the best idea? Any way to see what's actually going on? Or is it better to ps2ps all ps files - and if so, how to do that with cups ??

Gigabyte Radeon 9000 Pro-II 128mb [partly solved]

Hi all, Good news! I finally got this card going. The latest release of the ATi fglrx drivers installed and compiled fine. The XFree86-4 (why does it change it to -4?) that fglrxconfig generates doesn't work, but I just changed the old XF86config to load the fglrx module instead of the radeon one and it loaded X. Still no 3D, DRI or xv though. I'm working on it. I also tried Mandrake 9.1 on that machine, thinking that maybe it's just that Yast2 doesn't like the card, since as far as I know XFree86 4.3 should support all the Radeon 9000 cards. I got the same error: no screens found and/or screens found but non have a useable configuration. So the driver definitely doesn't want to load on the card. It's a great card, and by far the fastest Radeon 9000 I've seen. I really hope I get it working fully... I'll keep you guys posted. Kind regards Hans

winbindd from samba in SuSE 8.2

Does this work for somebody? At least a confirmation that it does is what I need to keep trying. I was using winbindd from a samba 3.0 beta I compiled, and winbindd was working fine until the disk crashed. Now, I want to use winbindd from SuSE's samba packages, but I can't seem to be able to make it work again. So: 1. nmb smb and windbind are running 2. I have this in /etc/nsswitch.conf passwd: compat winbind group: compat winbind 3. this in /etc/pam.d/samba #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_winbind.so account required pam_winbind.so The users need to access the server only with samba 4. this in /etc/samba/smb.conf security = domain winbind separator = + winbind uid = 10000-20000 winbind gid = 10000-20000 template homedir = /home/%U 5. The computer was joined to the domain with smbpasswd -j WIN Yet, when I try to access a share on this computer, the username is mapped to "nobody". What am I missing? Thanks.

I keep getting messages in root's mail on 2 SuSE 8.1 boxes about problems rotating the samba log. I've just had a warning from the SuSE ezmlm that my account has been bouncing emails, and this seems to be a problem with using the osirusoft blacklist. However, as far as I know, I'm not using any blacklist at all. How do I find out whether (presumably spamassassin) is using this blacklist? Oddly, only some email msgs have been bouncing, which suggests that perhaps the problem isn't with me? Sometimes when I run YaST I will see no items in the updates frame that are checked. However, when I have nothing checked and hit the accept button, I might still get a patch. Today was one of those cases. There was an update to pine and it didn't show up on the list. However, when I hit "Accept" it got it and installed it. Well, that's great that it was installed, but why didn't it show up in the list? -Michael

I have searched the web for information if its possible to boot SuSE 8.2 from an LSI Logic MegaRaid IDE card. I currently run SuSE 8.0 Pro on it but it doesn't detect the RAID set but instead it detects the individual disks. Will 8.2 support this, there isn't any native 8.2 drivers for download anywhere... Upgrading 7.2 --> 8.1

I currently have a small network (5 Win98 PCs) and a SuSE 7.2 box running Samba (out of the box). Currently Samba is the "WinNT" server for the network and it is working just perfectly!!! Logon scripts are executing nicely and all is ok. One of the clients decided to upgrade from Win98 to Win2000 SP2. Since the upgrade, the client is unable to logon to the SuSE box, shares are not available etc. I have read about the "machine account" that Win2000 requires and have made all necessary account creations on the SuSE box. I have also constructed the root account on the SuSE box in order to join the Win2000 client. In addition, I have followed, by the book, all the instructions to add the client to the network and still nothing. Due to all this, I searched the net and found that Samba 2.2.0 cannot support win2000 SP2 and an upgrade is needed on Samba. (I wonder if this is true?!?!?!). I thought of upgrading from 7.2 to 8.1 which I purchased recently. Any suggestions and/or comments would be greatly appreciated (although I must admit that I do not want to upgrade to a new SuSE version currently since all is working so fine!!!!). thank you for your help in advance!! In order to test, I've got kernel-2.6-test5 to compile and run with SuSE 8.2. Even ALSA and VMWARE are OK, but I've difficulties with sysfs and USB. Did some one happen to have USB OK ? Pryan.org Firebird Builds? ( Plugin Help)

I was wondering if anyone was using the Firebird builds from http://pryan.org/phoenix/hendikins/. I installed Blackdown java from the Suse cd and created a symlink from /usr/lib/BlackdownJava2/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so to my ~/.phoenix/plugins directory and java will still not load. I am also having the same problems with the mplayer plugin from http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/. I have installed the codecs, built mplayer, the plugin and copied the plugin to ~/phoenix/plugins directory but still no go. The only plugin that has worked is the crossover shockwave player. If anyone could help me with this, it would be much appreciated. Suse 8.2 kernel 2.4.20-4GB

apt-get - can download only?

Hello, Is there any way to make apt-get download a package even if it's already installed? (sometimes i need to reinstall them, i tinker with em too much...) I tried "apt-get install -d (package)" but i get: "(package) is already the newest version." Removing & reinstalling the package isn't a solution (think dependencies), and getting it from ftp at the apt repository makes my beard grow waiting for the file lists to load in each security, update and base directories and then searching for it. Any idea?

Gnome 2 Errors

I recently installed Gnome2 on my 8.2 system and have noticed the below errors. Any help would be appreciated. I've also noticed that it takes several minutes for the log out screen to display when trying to log off. This socket already exists indicating esd is already running. Exiting... dvd-rw drive... how to get it play DVD's

I have dvd-rw on my laptop. The problem is that I can't get it to play dvd's I installed suse 8.2 pro from dvd, I also have mplayer compiled from sources from their site. Works smoothly on all other material. Mounting a memory stick reader

I have a 128 Mb memory stick from a Sony camera. hwinfo can see the stick and its geometry as a "disk". However, mount requests that I specify a file system type. I have no idea what the format is. I have tried fat, vfat, msdos, umsdos, but none work. I even tried autofs and got the mount help print out. Any ideas appreciated. Ed Harrison

Thanks, and yes, I usually pass it a display number. For example: jethro:/tmp/.X11-unix # vncserver :0 VNC server is already running as :0 jethro:/tmp/.X11-unix # vncserver :1 New 'X' desktop is jethro:1 Starting applications specified in /root/.vnc/xstartup Log file is /root/.vnc/jethro:1.log I still can't connect to display :0. I can connect to display :1, but because of what's in xstartup, I get a twm screen w/ one xterm open in it. That's not what I want. The way it used to work was once I connected (from home) I would see my screen just like it is on my desktop at work. I was passing vncviewer just the IP address, so it defaulted to display :0. I really don't have a clue as to why it suddenly stopped working. Apache access from local machine fails but OK from LAN

I have had apache set up on my Suse8.2 box which is connected to a smal LAN (SAMBA, Windoze, IMAC, more Suse). Suse8.2 also runs DNS (BIND9) but no firewall. I recently updated a number of rpms using APT and all seemed to go successfully. But I now can't connect to the apache server from the Suse Box using "localhost", servername or IP address. I get various responses from mozilla1.4-7 eg gateway timeout, server unreachable etc, Similar responses when I use Konqueror and Lynx. Apache2 error log reports "Invalid method in request" Pings work to localhost etc. Now for the confusing part (to me !). I can access the server from other machines on the LAN including Safari browser on an imac, and IE on Windoze. In exasperation I have upgraded Apache1.3 to Apache2.044-32 with essentially the same result. So it may be the problem is nothing to do with apache. Any ideas on what I can try to narrow down the cause. -- Phil Faulkner

hi i've setted up a NIS server and NIS clients on SuSE 8.2.. at KDe login screen i can see all the users on NIS database..but i'm able only to login with my local user. If i try to login with another user ( which i can see on the KDE login screen) an error appears: impossible to create Home directory? how can i do? Question on opening links in Evolution

I'm running 1.4.4 and when I click on a link in email or on my Summary page, my browser pops up but not the link. This has actually been going on for a while, I just got tired of it. In a nut shell, oh, on SuSE 8.2. KDE 3.1.[123] screen saver disabled and works as advertised. Gnome,Xfce4 and other window managers. TI he screen saver or maybe something else DPMS. blanks the screen in 10mins. Even w/xawtv running and setup to disable screen savers, but still blanks out. DPMS off in XF86Config file. a "set -DPMS' in my .xinitrc file. I just added last night xset s off to .xinitrc after above... because the screen still went black. My dad even delted the xscreensaver exec. Albeit he didn't know what he was doing... New Scanner Problems

I have just purchased an Epson Stylus CX5200. SuSE recognizes everything fine and the scan test in the USB scanner setup returns a nice b/w scan. However, I installed the scanner last evening and then when I restarted my workstation this morning I had to re-do the scanner setup. Also, I cannot get Kooka to work with the scanner, and I have an error in xsane for which I need more info. In kooka it sees the scanner but then when I attempt to do a preview scan or final scan, nothing happens. kooka --version reveals the following: ~> kooka --version Qt: 3.1.1 KDE: 3.1.1 Kooka: 0.40 Anyone had any experience with this scanner or had any similar problems with Kooka? Now with xsane I get the following error: ~> xsane xsane: error while loading shared libraries: libgimpui-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have read that this lib was packaged with gimp 1.2, however, I have just installed the ULB packages for gimp which are version 1.3.19. Is there a way around this? Do I need a newer version of xsane? If so is this available via SuSE ftp (I did not find one)? Any information on this subject will be greatly appreciated. This is my 3rd post of this. Someone please take a look and help me out. While I was making preparations to back up all my files, I logged into Gnome as root and ... everything was fine! All the issues I had logging in as me were gone when I logged in as root. So, as root, I created a new user and then I logged in as that user and everything was still fine. No issues with YaST, saving Quanta Docs or anything. So the question is .. why did this happen? How did my original user name get screwed up? The second question is... I would like to transfer my ALL of my mail, accounts, and filters to the new user name. What is the correct procedure for doing this? Also, I have old mail backed up on a CD from an evolution installation on Mandrake 9.1. I would like to import these values into the new user install as well. I can handle setting up the mail accounts and filters again if I have to, but I would very much like to be able to have all this mail in one spot. Has anyone done this or is there an online tutorial on how to do this? I looked on Ximian's site but I didn't find anything. I used to be able to connect to my linux desktop via vnc (from home via VPN). But all of a sudden it just stopped working. All I get is "Failed to connect to server". I can't even connect from my other PC in my office. The only thing I can seem to get working is Xvnc, which is not what I want. Every time I try to start "vncserver", it starts up Xvnc.... Recover from crash ?

Hi folks, this is just theoretical. But what would be your desaster recovery recipe to get up and running _from tape_ in no time after a complete hardware crash. I see the following factors (any I've forgotten? ): 1) Boot Sector 2) Partions 3) Files Obviously some image would be preferable. Have any of you dd'd to tape yet ? Any readymede stuff around. Greetings, Someone I know got a file with a .dat extension. Since I'm their de facto IT geek I thought I'd take a look at it. When I execute the "file" command, I get "Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format". It is not a pure ASCII file and OpenOffice doesn't particularly open it very well. This is coming from not too computer-literate people who would probably have no idea what a Digital Audio Tape looks like. Does anyone know what this could be? TIA & Cheers

Mozilla losing it's cookies?

Does anyone else have problems with Mozilla 1.4 or Mozilla-Firebird 0.6.1 as far as cookies are concerned. It seems that they seem to just be losing themselves. I was reading salon.com this morning and then went back a couple hours later..and had to re-login. This kind of thing happens with no rhyme or reason..I can sometimes go days without having to login again after I've told a site to remember me. Open Office defunkt

Hi all, just needed to open an important document, and OOo freaked out on me. It just would not start any more. Here's what I did to remedy: 0. Restart X. - no change 1. Reboot (okay.....MS style, kinda infected there ;-) - no change 2. Reinstalled OOo from CD -no change 3. Removed my .kde and .kde2 profiles and started fresh. -no change 4. Installed Star Office 6.1 beta - same problem 5. Opened another user - same problem 6. Ran strace on it , it showed no particular reason to get stuck, it just stuck. I think I have figured out why my time doesn't get set correctly. nfs is started by S11nfs , but adsl is not started. How do I tell my system to start adsl automatically at start up. I've been doing it manually with adsl-start I'm running SuSE 8.1

fontconfig?

Hi all, Question about the fontconfig programs now being needed by some programs. The latest Gimp build, 1.3.20 complains about fontconfig when trying to start with the standard XFree86 files installed. Although XFree86 includes fontconfig, programs like Gimp are not seeing that without having the fontconfig program installed separate from the XFree86. Correct me if my logic or thoughts are wrong, please. Now I have the fontconfig rpms, but when trying to install them, of course, XFree86 complains, XFree86-devel complains, xf86tools and XFree86-libs. So how does one proceed at this point? Install with a --replacefiles? Rebuild the src XFree86 rpms, altering the spec files not to include fontconfig or? Suggestions, comments welcome! No sound from fortissimo II

I have a fortissimo II and it all seems to be set up right (its the correct card in YaST. I am usinf KDE on 8.2. I have looked in /etc/modules.d/alsa and seems to be setup OK in there. Radeon 9200

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone is running the new Radeon 9200 card in their machine and how did you get it configured? This card is supported by XFree86 4.3, but not by the presently installed SuSE version that comes with 8.2! I am not sure about trying to compile the files needed from the XFree86 folks either. From what info I was able to find, it didn't look nor sound as simple as the standard ./configure, make, make install process that we do with other source files. Has SuSE updated their 4.3 recently? Who is the keeper of such things for SuSE and might there be something in the "people" files? Any help is welcomed to get this baby working with SuSE. It does come up in VESA mode, but I was unable to get a full kde boot out of it. Using apt, I've just upgraded most of my Gnome packages to usr-local-bin, and now when I try to access the main Gnome menu, its just blank. The entries are all there, I just can't see them. Any solution? Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't see any reference to it in the archives. David

I say this based on my experience installing 8.0 and 8.1 on a Win2K machine,which fortuneately had fat32 partitons and not NTFS. We just did another install on another Win2K machine which we had just bought used. We removed MS Window's programs and started over creating the partitions we wanted. It took most of the day. Remember most people in the States have the OS's installed when they buy the box. I don't know if that's true for most of the world, but there are lot of people who are willing to give linux a try but they don't want it to mess up their MS stuff. Now I am looking at installing (with help) SuSE 8.2 on my "8.0/8.1" machine. It is tripple boot (Win2K, SuSE 8.0, and 8.1 and I plan to add 8.2). I can boot with both Lilo and Grub, but more than once on my 8.0 system I had to use the CD when my Lilo floppy died on me for no appararent reason. (In general I use the command line to create Lilo foppies, I don't trust KDE/Yast to do it right) Steve struck a raw nerve with his comment about reliable booting. So far grub has done bettter, but I still cross my fingers each time I boot. SAMBA configuration

Hi everybody. Can some kind soul fill me in on Samba configuration. I've been through the manual, and I've been to samba.org, but I can't get my linux box to act as a print server for the WinME system on the lan. I created a RAW CUPS print queue using YaST for my attached parallel printer - an Epson Stylus 850 Then I edited my runlevels so that Samba would be running on level 3 and 5 After a reboot, shouldn't the printer show-up as a Windows network printer? I screwed around with the multiple profiles in Yast a while ago and lately found some items that didn't make sense. While running SuSEconfig I got the following message: Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.scpm... SCPM: SCPM is locked. I've just upgraded SuSE 8.0 to 8.2 here in my home computer in St.Louis. It' running fine but the printer does not work.. WHen I click on the printer icon I get the following message "KDEInit could not launch 'klpq'. Could not find 'klpq' executable" I looked for "klpq" and "kdeutils3" and "kdeutils3-printing" through YAST2 and could not find it no matter the chosen query options ..... How come ? I cannot install it simply because YAST2 cannot locate it in its database. At the moment my Epsopn printer , which woked foine with SuSE 8.0, srtays idle no matter what. Can someone please help me out of this nighhtmare ? Thank you in advance, Maura

ACPI problems

Hello I am running a newish laptop with SuSe 8.1 and KDE and cannot manage the power. The laptop has full ACPI capability. In the Control Centre - Power management it tells me that "Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI installation. ACPI was probably enabled, but some of the sub-options were not - you need to enable at least 'AC Adaptor' and 'Control Method Battery' and then rebuild your kernel." After googling and looking at manuals all I can find are either - suggestions that I set acpi = off and apm = on (which seems to be a bit defeatist), - or instructions to change boot loader configuration which I have done setting pci = acpi But nothing changes ... I can't find how to enable 'AC Adaptor' and 'Control Method Battery'.... And my battery suddenly does not work ... after only 12 months service (just past the guarantee) ... I have a feeling that this may be related. Can anyone please shed some light on this. TIA Norman

Konqueror help

I click on my Konq webbrower and/or my menu directory and nothing happens. I just get an icon spinning then it goes away! Has anyone had this problem? The only way for me to use either is to open the Super User file manager and browser the net or my files that way. It's really annoying. I checked var/log/messages and don't see anything. Everything works if I reboot, but at some point it becomes unusable again. Any thoughts? Dual CPU motherboards

Hello All, I have searched Suse's hardware database trying to find a server-class dual xeon or dual Athlon MP motherboard that I can buy and load SuSE 8.2 professional on with no results. Their hardware database is too far behind current technology. I want to put together an "EXTREMELY" fast system with a minimum of 2 - 2.6GHz + Xeons or Athlons and a U320 or U160 SCSI hard drive(s) and 2 Gig or more of memory. I need to know if there is a dual cpu motherboard that SuSE 8.2 Professional will run on of this calibre. Can anyone tell me if any of the motherboards in this list will work? For Xeon CPUs... Asus PC-DL Deluxe Asus PR-DLSW Intel SE7505VB2 Supermicro X5DA8 Supermicro P4DP6-Q Supermicro P4DC6+ Supermicro X5DAL-G For AMD CPUs... GigaByte GA-7DPXDW-P MSI K7D Master MPX Any other recommendations would be appreciated. I want a motherboard that Suse 8.2 will recognize ALL onboard components like USB, LAN, SCSI, IDE, AUDIO, ect., and I will most likely use an external AGP card, hence it needs an AGP 4x or 8x slot. insmod-- newbie

I am trying to configure a dual parallel port after installation of SuSE 8.2. I am following instructions from the chip maker (MosNet). The important part is using insmod to modify the parport. But when I try to run "insmod parport.o" at root directory in bash I get the message "no such file or directory." I used the -v switch and it told me it was using parport.o. I then did the next command (something like "insmod parport_pc.o io... -v") command and it said "using parport_pc.o" and then "no such file or directory" Where can I get info on insmod? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is that I don't know exactlly why it's working now and why it wasn't. Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 USB Problems

I am endeavouring to get my Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 to work with SuSE 8.2. I've followed the instructions at http://sdb.suselinux.hu/en/sdb/html/jreuter_zaurus_usb.html, and have also read over http://www.ruault.com/Zaurus/ethernet-over-usb-howto.html, looking for something that I have missed. I've found nothing. Emergency...Restore Windows..?

Hi, As a total newbie, I did a really stupid thing....I had one hard drive which was partitioned to 5 and I installed SuSE on one of drives after formatting....It was a good start....but, after I installed SuSE, I realized it was NOT installed as a dual booting like SuSE 8.0. In other words, my original OS, windows XP is gone and only linux booting is remained. Fortunately, I could keep my other drives and I could see there are three drives on the Desktop with a name '/windows/C' , '/windows/D' and 'windows/E'.... Problems with mozilla and plugins

Hi, I'm running a SuSE 8.1 distribution with KDE3. I use Mozilla 1.0.1 as the default web browser, and it was all OK until today, early afternoon, when I decided to try Netscape 7.1, just to give it a chance and understand which of the two browsers supports better MathML. I installed netscape 7 in /usr/local/netscape7, which didn't exist before, and noticed the following things: 1) MathML support was apparently the same in both programs, but Netscape complains about 4 fonts that it isn't able to find, while Mozilla limited itself to 2. As a consequence some symbols, like integrals and square roots are rendered badly in Netscape. 2) Netscape cannot deal with some plugin-dependent contents. In particular RealPlayer streaming audio and pdf files. I could manage to make it use acrobat reader as helper application, but I wasn't able to view a pdf document embedded in the browser. 3) While Netscape is opened, the KDE menu icons that should open Mozilla, open Netscape, instead, and starting Mozilla from a shell, causes Mozilla to ask for another profile, since the usual one is already in use (by Netscape, of course). 4) If Netscape is not running, Mozilla opens regularly both manually and from the GUI links, but inherits the previous Netscape problems (those described in 1) and 2)): it doesn't find some MathML fonts, complains about missing the RealAudio streaming plugin, and opens pdf files only on the external helper application. 5) I tried to wipe out Netscape (according to the installer log nothing was installed outside /usr/local/netscape7), without success. 6) I finally tried to remove and install back Mozilla from YAST2, deleting and/or moving all the non-standard files (from previous manual configurations) and also my personal .mozilla directory by hand, but no way! 7) I did the same as in 6), but also removing and installing back RealPlayer. Nothing happend. The only plugin that works and never failed is the flash player. Do you have any suggestion? I cannot figure out how to make things work again as before. I seem to recall there being a beta Real One player in 8.1. I cannot find a Real One player for Linux at www.real.com or anywhere else for that matter. Does any one know if it is available and if so where? Does anyone know if Mozilla (1.4 and later) are going to support the rtsp protocol? TIA. Problem with USB Pendrive and SuSE 8.1

All, Have recently bought a Typhoon 128Mb USB 2.0 Pen Drive. As usual all works ok on windows, but I can't mount the drive in linux. The drive is detected and the relevant entries in /etc/fstab made, but no joy.. I wonder if it's something to do with the fact that it appears as 2 drive. The first drive is small (2Mb) with a small program to enable/disable security, and the second drive is the main part. The only curiosity I noticed was that cdrecord showed only 1 drive for cdrecord -scanbus. I've included a text file with outputs from the following in case it would help... 1. sg_scan 2. sg_map 3. /var/log/messages 4. cdrecord -scanbus 5. /etc/fstab 6. lsusb 7. lsusb -v 8. lsmod 9. /proc/bus/usb/drivers 10. /proc/bus/usb/devices 11. /proc/scsi/usb-storage-0 12. /proc/scsi/scsi + outputs from mount commands. Sorry it's a zip file - but can't send an email > 20000 bytes... Any help would be greatly apprecitated in getting this drive to work. TIA RikD.

LT winmodem problem (SOLVED)

To recap my problem: in trying to install LT winmodem driver ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_4GB-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm I got an error message Failed dependencies: k_deflt=2.4.20-4GB is needed by ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_4GB-8.26a9-1 despite the fact that uname -r reported that my kernel version is 2.4.20-4GB (in my original message I mistyped some commas instead of dots -- sorry for the confusion). Following advice from Thibaut Cousin (thank you!) I tried again with 'rpm -Uvh --nodeps' to bypass dependency checking, and this seemed to work OK. I then mounted the module with 'modprobe \*' and everything seemed to be fine. When I tried to connect with kinternet, the modem seemed to be working, but failed to connect to my ISP's number. Having read the file 'LTinstall.txt' (created during the rpm installation) I decided to follow the suggestion to try adding the line 'cat /tmp/ltmodem/tmpfile' to the file '/etc/modules.conf', followed by depmod -a. After this, the modem stopped working altogether! I removed the line, and found I was back to having an apparently working modem which was unable to connect. I went into YAST2 to see if I could see any problems with the modem settings. Nothing obvious, but I decided to activate 'stupid mode' (this was not activated by default as stated in the users guide). This fixed it! I am now able to connect without any problems :) (maybe someone could explain how 'stupid mode' works?) Many thanks to those who helped! Regards to all, Des Kenny

Hi, I downloaded and installed the new gcc 3.3.1 from the project dir (all files, except source) - and that took several days to download. I then proceeded to recompile the kernel, using the same config file as I had used to recompile the kernel before, no modifications. clean, dep, bzImage, modules, modules_install, install; mk_initrd. Kernel crashes one second after booting (thus before any module is loaded), blank screen, Caps lock and Scroll lock blinking simultaneously. SMC card question

I've been trying to figure out why my smc card (SMC9452TX) causes my system to freeze up at certain points, or completely shuts down after logging out of KDE or gnome and logging back in. First, my card is listed in SuSE as a DP83820, not a smc9452tx. Secondly when I try to install the driver that came with the card, I can't. I read the instructions and do the following: #: insmod smc94x2.o and I get: kernel-module version mismatch smc94x2.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.2-2 while this kernel is version 2.4.20-4GB-athlon. Now in the directory where the smc94x2.o is located I also see these files: dp83820.h hsm.h nsm.h nsmtypes.h dp.c hsm.c sp.c makefile smc94x2.o Does having the makefile listed in there mean that I can make the .o file for my individual kernel? rsync configuration problems

## rsync configuration problem I am so incredibly stuck and I don't know why.... I can neither pull files down from server to client, nor push files from server to client. I'm beginning to suspect it might be suse specific. Firebird integration into KDE

A while ago I asked how Firebird could be set to use Kmail as the default email app. Just use mozex came the answer. (it works) Now how do I get Firebird registered in KDE as my official browser? When I click on a link in Kmail, I want a Firebird window. (I definitely Don't want Konqueror, that app thinks it's too smart for its own good.) And why-can't-I / how-can-I have an instance of Firebird as part of my startup? I have firebird running and save the session, but when I log in again ... everything but firebird! Making shadow passwords compulsory

The passwd utility has a bit of undesired behaviour on my Suse system. Most of my users don't have entries in shadow, they depend on pam_krb5 for authentication. So /etc/shadow is very short, it only has lines for root and a few systems users who need to get in even if the network is down. I want for everyone else to be denied even the possibility of a password. Now in the past (under solaris) passwd would grumble and fail unless that username had a line present in shadow. THIS passwd just bungs the encrypted string into /etc/passwd! Argh! How can I suppress this obnoxious obsequiousness on the part of passwd? Hello, I have a problem with telnet, I reinstalled Linux I went ahead and enable telnetd in inetd services but I can not telnet into my linux box. I am able to telnet to another system from linux box but no incoming telnet sesions. I can not even telnet to localhost. I have reviewed the SUSE knowledge base but still can not find the answer. problems with Intel CA810E not booting

I've a client who wants me to put Linux on their rackmount system for a server. I've got 8.2 Pro on it, but I'm having booting problems. It's an Intel CA810e motherboard w/ built-in video and ethernet. It come up and runs just fine, but when I don't have the keyboard plugged into it I see a "keyboard error" on the POST screen but it goes on to the Grub screen. I let it boot itself to the default, but once it gets to the apm something something BIOS message, it hangs. If I plug in the keyboard and reboot, all is well. I checked the BIOS interface stuff to see if I could disable the keyboard error, but there was nothing there like that. My next step is to try to build a custom kernel and see if there is something I can find with APM or other boot parameters that might do the trick. If anyone here has experience with this MB and could give a bit of advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! -Michael

help with gcc3.3.1 update and kernel compiling

My computer runs SuSE 8.2. I have downloaded and installed gcc3.3.1. Due to a small issue with one program, I wanted to compile the kernel. Well, I installed the source from the CD, updated it with YOU, "make cloneconfig", "make clean", "make bzImage modules", much later "make modules_install". At the end, there were some four depmod errors. I thougth there was something wrong. Downloaded linux-2.4.21.SuSE from mantel, repeat. This time there were no errors. Then, copied the bzImage to vmlinuz and mk_initrd. The thing does not boot. Dies with kernel panic, not being able to mount root. Two lines before, complains "couldn't find the kernel version the module was compiled for" with regard to reiserfs. SuSE or SUSE not a valid word according to KMail

I was very surprised that KMail, integrated with KDE 3.1 under SuSE 8.2 did not know the word 'SuSE'. I will let it off for not knowing 'AOL' (which it doesn't either) but 'USB' and 'DVDs' and even 'emails' are really unforgivable! Has anybody else found any obvious words missing from the dictionary? If any KMail developers are reading, I love your program, seriously and I am only joking about the dictionary. I would really like to see some features such as: 1.searching for more than 3 fields 2.parsing through emails better i.e. I have some webforms in the format 'Name: George' and I would like to type 'Name:George' as a search item i.e. the spaces/CRs are ignored 3.Mark emails with certain colours as they are filtered. changing hostname

Folks, I am running 8.0 and I did a host name change with the command line command "hostname" and of course it works fine. The problem is after I reboot, the hostname is reset back to "linux"! Fetchmail: do not use "no bouncemail"

Hi, I put "set no spambounce" in my "fetchmailrc" file, in order to avoid bouncing mails each time I rejected a mail because it contained a .pif file (as comented in another thread). Hi, There is a new rpm package for Apache 1.3.28 in suse-people apt-get repository. The problem here is it requires to uninstall mod-php4 package to upgrade apache. I'm afraid it will disable all embebed php4 scripting. Do you know whether this package is now included into mod-php-core? Is it a bug in packaging? Thanks. Intermittent unability to start PCMCIA at boot

Hello, During boot of my SuSE 8.2 on a laptop it is sometimes not possible to start my PCMCIA wireless card. SuSE 8.2 and "multiple" USB floppy drives

Hello, Whenever I attach my USB floppy drive to my notebook, I get the following SCSI devices, although I only have one actual device. Is there any way to not have the USB subsystem do this? Dear fellows, I've just upgraded a working SuSE 7.3 to a 8.2 (I've reformated the HD, installed 8.2 from scratch and started configuring). My OpenLDAP is working fine (including TLS, replica, etc) and I can perform a successful "ldapsearch -x 'uid=edgar'" anytime but if I try a 'getent passwd edgar' it returns nothing. I've double-checked /etc/openldap/ldap.conf, /etc/openldap/slapd.conf, /etc/nsswitch and /etc/pam.d/*, I've also tried to use lines like "auth required pam_unix2.so" (seems new to SuSE8.2) or "auth required pam_ldap.so" (the lines I was using in SuSE 7.3) for some services without success: #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_unix2.so account required pam_unix2.so #password required pam_pwcheck.so nullok #password required pam_unix2.so nullok use_first_pass use_authtok session required pam_unix2.so OR #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_ldap.so account required pam_ldap.so #password required pam_pwcheck.so nullok #password required pam_unix2.so nullok use_first_pass use_authtok session required pam_ldap.so It's clear to me that there are more conf files involved in SuSE 8.2 than: /etc/openldap/*, /etc/nsswitch and /etc/pam.d/* but I don't have a clue which files. I've followed SuSE 8.2 docs and edited /etc/security/pam_unix2.conf like sugested in "To use the pam_ldap module, you need to do the following: If you use the default SuSE Linux PAM configuration, you only need to edit /etc/security/pam_unix2.conf and add the "use_ldap" option for account, auth and password management. If you configure LDAP with YaST2, YaST2 will do this for you. Else edit all the /etc/pam.d configurations file to use the pam_ldap module. Look in /usr/share/doc/packages/pam_ldap for examples." I've tried both methods above without sucess (the first seems to be system wide and the second, service specific). I've also tried to use YAST-LDAP-client-configurator and it worked just fine till the next reestart!!! - I've tried YAST again after the first reestart but it didn't work anymore. Could anyone point me some SuSE 8.2 especific documentations (other than /usr/share/doc) and/or all the file names (and their locations) involved. Thanks in advance, José Carlos Stevenson.

Problem starting kmail

Hi, I ma using SuSe 8.1, and I recently upgraded kde to 3.1.3 using the files provided at SuSe's website. Everything worked for two days, but as of today I cannot start kmail anymore. I am getting the following error message: /opt/kde3/bin/kmail: relocation error: /opt/kde3/bin/kmail: undefined symbol: _ZTI15KFolderTreeItem Any idea what this might want to tell me ? Samba and Webmin uable to browse from windows

Newbie--I finally have my Samba up and working although I still have some things to iron out. Configuration: SuSE 8.2 server with win98, winXP Pro, Win2K clients I can browse the SuSE drives from all windows machines after I restart the Linux box, but if I run Webmin all of a sudden no windows machines can browse the network. All connections are kept intact. The message in Win98 is "Unable to browse network". On the Win2k & XP machines the linux host shows up in the workgroup, but when I double click it I get "\\linuxhost is not accessible, network path not found." The win98 machines won't even allow me to browse the workgroup. It may not be webmin doing it, but if not it's a big coincidence. Any advice where to look?

IDE CD-RW drive and k3b

Hi, I've recently replaced SCSI CD-ROM/CD-RW drives with IDE ones, and so far everything has been fine. SUSE 8.1 on booting offered me to configure the new drives, and I do have read access to both the CD-ROM and the CD-RW drive. Problem is, when running k3b setup, it seems like the CD-RW drive is not recognised as such. I've been told that I'd need to enable scsi emulation, and after looking at some entries in SUSE support database, here's what I've done: a) Added /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to /etc/init.d/boot.local (as advised by a support entry) b) Added hda=ide-scsi and hdb=ide-scsi to grub.conf via YAST2. Rebooted, and still no progress. In k3b-setup, I am being presented with the CD-ROM and the CD-RW as Readers only.? Any idea what I migth be doing wrong ? How to interept and redirect mails?

Hi, Using postfix, is it possible to intercept and redirect email coming FROM a user? I want to redirect mail going out from fetchmail-daemon@localhost, which is going anywhere, to go instead to any other arbitrary local address. That is, I whant to rewrite the TO address. Notice that "set no mailbounce" in fetchmail is useless: a side efect is that the rejected email is not flushed from the server. Background info. I have a rule in /etc/postfix/header_checks to reject email containing certain attachments: /(filename|name)=".*\.(scr|pif)"/ REJECT "*** DOS/WIN executables rejected ***" Then, another rule holds the bounce mail that fetchmail produces: /^From:.*fetchmail\-daemon\@nimrodel\.valinor/ HOLD /^From:.*FETCHMAIL\-DAEMON\@nimrodel\.valinor/ HOLD because the bounce mail would be normally rejected at the destination, and it is useless, anyway. Then I manually delete them with "postsuper -d queueid". But I would prefer to redirect them to myself (easier deleting and inspection). I'm using suse 8.2. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Hi everyone, I got some problems with dia. I use the programs on a debian and I could export the picture in eps format. With the suse packages I can't do it. If I try, dia produce a strange eps file with some errors and I can't use it on lyx and other programs. I forget to install something (the package installation don't give me warning). I'm trying to get logrotate to rotate my logs and compress them. However, something in my config file is probably wrong, since all I get is an error message. I'm running SuSE 8.2 Pro My /etc/logrotate.conf looks like this ------------ rotate 12 create compress olddir /var/log/oldlogs compresscmd /usr/bin/bzip2 uncompresscmd /usr/bin/bunzip2 /var/log/warn { compress dateext maxage 365 rotate 99 size +1024k sharedscripts postrotate /etc/init.d/syslog reload endscript } -------------- And when I run it I get an error saying: error verifying olddir path /var/log//var/oldlogs/: No such file or directory Somehow the path is getting messed up and a extra "/var" is being added. I found a post with a similar query in a German newsgroup, but since I can't read German and there was no answer to the question there, I'm at a loss as to what the problem might be. thanks in advance, Anders

Ok, A few weeks ago I posted a message to this list about a hard drive problem. Thanks to the response I got, I went out and purchased a nice nifty new hard drive, and then reinstalled SuSE. I've got all of the updates and everything else in the system. Oddly enough though, I've got a new "problem". It doesn't seem too serious, it's just annoying and I don't understand it at all. After the laptop has been on for more than 30 minutes or so, it starts beeping. The beeps seem to be intermittent and don't seem to have ANY bearing on what I'm doing at that moment. This has never happened before. The only hardware I've upgraded is from a 4200 rpm laptop drive to a 5400 rpm drive (same size). It seems to be running great. The system recognized it on the first try (after I figured out how to reconnect the silly thing). YaST didn't see any problem with it at all, and the system seems 100% stable. My fans are coming on and off like always, and everything else "seems fine". Any ideas? Thanks in Advance...........

Bad initrd ?

Hi, I think I somehow destroyed my initrd. When I try to boot there are messages : kernel (hd0/2) /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 vga = normal [linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size = 0x1078c4] initrd (hd0/2) /boot/initrd [Linux-initrd @ 0xdfbd000,0x22deb bytes] uncompressing Linux ... invalid compressed format (err = 1) -- System halted I still can boot with the safe settings, so how could I restore the initrd from the standard boot ? Any pointers welcome. I was trying to install a Firewire disk, so I tried to install the ieee1394 modules at boot, and ran mk_initrd. This didn't work so I removed the ieee1394 entry and again ran mk_initrd. Everything still worked OK, but at one of the next boots fsck checked the disk (and found errors), and I think the problems started after the next boot. B.T.W. use of percent character in cron commands

I encountered a strange problem in cron. According to crontab(5) man page, % has a special meaning in crontab commands. If used as it is, % is substituted with a new line. To preserve % in command line it has to be escaped with backslash. What I observe is that for every escaped % a character from the end of the command line is appended to it. For example, my crontab entry is: 27 13 * * * echo "\%a\%b 12345" This is converted into: Sep 7 13:27:00 fizia /USR/SBIN/CRON[1851]: (pike) CMD (echo "%a%b 12345"5") Looks strange, doesn't it? Hi I have a problem with my amavisd-configuration. I use spamassassin 2.55 with amavisd-new for spamchecking. My postsystem is Postfix. It works good for incoming mails, but I have problems with my outgoing mails. I don´t like to scan them for spam. I found the term to terminate this: @bypass_spam_checks_acl = ( "!.$mydomain", "." ); But my problem is I have to work with more domains, so I would like to send emails with different domains through my postsystem, but without spamscanning. Like I said above, for one domain it´s working well, but I use more, so it isn´t working. Hi everyone, I installed Suse 8.2 on my AMD Duron machine and it works like a charm except.. you guessed it. I have a Lucent modem. The chipset is Agere SV92p.I tried installing the driver that I found on www.heby.de but it didn't work. I have gotten the modem to work with Mandrake, so I'm thinking there is a way to get it working in Suse too. I'm a relative newbie to Linux so I was wondering if anyone has simple instructions for me to get this modem working on my machine. Thanks.

SUSE 9.0 Release Date

Anyone have any idea when the next release is due, trying to determine if it's worth it to upgrade to 8.2(from 8.0) at this point...I tend to doubt it as I don't REALLY need it yet.. The main thing I am after is the 1.4 ver of JRE..but would like to avoid the dependency hell of trying to make the JRE work in 8.0..seems I recall there were some gcc compatability issues in 8.2 upon its first release... seems I also recall from this list the x.0 releases are a bit better than the x.xx releases.. No KDE applications print to the printer under SuSE 8.2

I am running a SuSE8.2 system with kde3.1.2 and here is my problem: ALL applications other than KDE apps print correctly using the CUPS system. No KDE applications print to the printer. My workaround is when I wish to print from a kde app I print to a file, instead of a printer listed in the printer que, then execute a script which does a lpr ~/print.ps. This causes the printer to print out the kde application correctly. Printing from kde has not worked since upgrading my OS to SuSE8.2 from 8.1 about four months ago. Searching the archives I found a reference stating this problem had been fixed with kde3.1.2 so I upgraded kde from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2, but still have the same problem. All gnome apps print correctly via cups FWIW. Can anyone point me in the right direction as I would like to get this problem resolved? Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. Just a side note, when I was using SuSE 8.1 I used the Lpring printing system which printed properly. The present problem occurred when I upgraded to SuSE 8.2 which installed the cups printing system. I posted this problem on the KDE mailing list but received zero response. Looks like this new installation is falling apart at the seems. In Gnome, when I try to open Yast2, after it prompts me for the root password, I get the error... Gnome SuperUser:b:connection to ":0.0" refused by server When I try to open Yast2 in Enlightenmet I get prompted for the password and then nothing happens at all. Since my new install I have been keeping up to date with all of my packages using apt. HELP!! KDM shut my system down, again!

Has anyone else seen this??? I just upgraded to SuSE 8.2 from SuSE 7.3, and I was logged in remotely via ssh (actually, at a Starbucks via 802.11.) I lost me connection to the 801.11 Access Point, and when I got logged back on, my SuSE 8.2 machine would not respond. shutdown failes on laptop

I installes suse 8.2 pro on laptop (fujitsu amilo). All went nicely except laptop don't shutdown.. When it is shutting down, I get: runlevel 0 reached but computer actually don't swich off.. I can then sthut it out by click the power button, but I'd rather have it go of by its own. If I set in /boot/grub/menu.lst the 'acpi=on' the box won't start. it freezes while detecting connected devices (passes ieee 9311 and after usb it freezes... don't get the usual two dots .. after that) in my /boot/grub/menu.lst I have now: kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 vga=0x317 acpi=off hdc=ide-scsi hdclun=0 splash=silent showopts Ideas? KDE 3.1.3 missing title bar and ability to type on second display

Hello All, I am not running KDE that much (now that I am playing with Gnome, Enlightenment, etc) but I did use it earlier today and for some reason, on my second monitor all applications that opened (such as Evolution, Mozilla, etc) are missing the title bar and I cannot type within them. When the screensaver comes on for the 1st monitor, the second one just sits there. It only happens it KDE. Ive already tried SuSEconfig, rebooting the machine and running Sax2 again (although I didnt really change anything on SaX2). Anyone know why this is happening and what I need to do to fix it? I only have rv250 in sax2. Then there's r200 & r300 I didn't see a r250. I did notice that when I run glxinfo ... I had installed the 1.4.2 package found at ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/projects/mozilla/1.4/8.2-i386/, which was working fine, but I then decided to go back to the CD version (so that I could do a howto for getting Mozilla to appear in Welsh). I uninstalled with YaST, and then reinstalled off the CD. However, on launching the donwgraded Mozilla, I get a yellow screen coming up with items like: <window id="main-window" ^ <menuitem id="edit-prefill" ----^ <key id="key_newNavigatorTab" key= etc etc ----^ It looks a bit like a CSS file, and missing > brackets at the end of each line. Netgear MA01RA wireless card setup in 8.2

I have been unable to get this card to work on my Compaq Presario 2170. I have followed the instructions from the support database article on this subject, and I have scoured this list and others looking for help. The card appears to be active, and gets an IP address from my router. I can ping the built-in ethernet card but not the router. I think the problem is in the mode setting, but changing it to anything except ad-hoc generates this error message: ERROR: command 'iwconfig eth1 mode automatic' returned Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) : SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument. However, the card still gets an IP address from the router. Also, I cannot seem to turn off either card with the ifdown command. When I ifup again, the dhcp daemon assigns an IP address again, but the connection appears active without the ifup. Does anyone have any suggestions? Zane -- Zane Vandiver <zvan(a)sbcglobal.net>

SuSEfirewall2 blocking(?) internal network.

After rebooting my internal network isn't able to connect to internet. Issuing SuSEfirewall2 stop and SuSEfirewall2 start fixes the problem. Is there a way to fix this behaviour? Greets: Goodness, have not had to struggle with X drivers for a very very long time..:) background info; card: generic Gforgce4 MMX440SE System: 8.2 SuSE Kernel: 2.4.20-4GB-athlon <vanila SuSE> gcc: 3.3 20030226 (CD shipping version) Now running the installer as per SuSE howto's barf with error message in /var/log/nvidia-installation-log gcc mismatch, sanity check failed. If you are sure you know what you are doing issue the command, IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH Problem: Um exactly where am I supposed to pass the parameter? sh NVIDIA-xxxxx.rn --IGNORExxxx (no go: unknown parameter) expanding the package and passing the parameter to the installer directly also does not work. So anyone have an idea on how to turn the gcc sanity check off>? Many thanks /ch

SDB print page set up I've lost it Help

I am using suse 7.3 pro default install with star office 5.2. Everything is updated using YOU. I tried the suse portal version of the SDB and can't get the page to format for printing. What prints is the exact image of whats on the screen including the grey panel on the left side. Also it is all squashed down to 2/3 rds of the page width. This makes the text of instructions equal to less than 1/2 the width of the paper. Print toner consumption will double if we have to print the panel every time. Is this a result of the CMS that Philipp Thomas spoke of in his email? Can anyone using 7.3 pro tell me how they format the page to print the instructions only? TIA Tom

Radeon 9000 troubles

I just got my system back to normal without reinstalling(it's a major accomplishment for me). In sax2 the card works if I use rv250 lf, but if i choose Radeon 9000 I get a no screens found error. Is there a way to get through this? On gears I get 320 fps full screen, is this what i should expect? Unfortunately only the radeon 9000 choice in sax2 can tell that i have a tv out on the graphics card, so I'd like to get this working if possible. Something about tux racer on my tv makes me smile. I found out yesterday that ati has linux drivers. I failed miserably at recompiling my kernel, but managed to recover. I assume my mistake was having the wrong kernel source. Where would i get the kernel source for k_athlon 2.4.20-100? Is it the same as the src rpm? I also noticed that the 9000 isn't listed. But ati barely ever lists this card on their website. SuSE's default postfix config is an open relay?

I can scarcely believe this, so I'm posing this concept to the list in the hopes that someone can tell me if I'm overlooking something, but it would appear that if you merely take the default postfix config as presented by SuSE, you will be operating an open relay on all interfaces. If you're like most people, you would have your email server sitting behind a firewall, and this would be fine. However, if your email server *is* your firewall, the SMTP port is going to be open to your internet connection, otherwise you're not going to receive mail. So the default SuSE config will allow anyone on your local broadband subnet to relay mail through your server. Since spammers love throw-away shared broadband connections, this is going to be a problem. The #1 thing that postfix needs as a configuration parameter with respect to relaying email is ``mynetworks''. To wit: http://www.postfix.org/basic.html#relaying The problem is that SuSE's /etc/sysconfig/postfix doesn't have the ``mynetworks'' parameter. This leaves postfix open to relay mail on _any_ interface. You can fix this by adding something _like_ this to your /etc/sysconfig/postfix file: POSTFIX_ADD_MYNETWORKS="192.168.0.0/24, 127.0.0.1/32" This will restrict access to relaying email to your local machine and your local network behind the firewall. Hello, I just installed Mondo Rescue on my SuSE 8.1 linux box. I've created a boot disk using Mindi. How do I tell SuSE that I want to use the CD-ROM to boot rather then the hard disk? My linux is on a dual boot (Win2000) notebook and the boot order in the Win2000 BIOS config tool is: CD-ROM Hard disk floppy So I thought I'm good to go. [SLE] Newbie Linksys EG1032 1000 Mbps

VERY new to Linux and SuSE. SuSE 8.2 i386 purchased Trying to install EG1032 network card. Card is identified as a NS82030 (I think that's right) and that driver is loaded (is that the right term?). There is an onboard NIC (eth0) as well that I have yet to get disabled (jumper on the board somewhere). It works fine. If I plug the network cable into the EG1032 it gets an IP address during boot but I cannot connect to the internet. I have read on other groups that the NS82030 driver works in SuSE (not sure of the build) but I'm not having any luck. Are there some standard settings I can try? And how would I make them and/or where would I find the info. Thanks Mark B

ISDN Hardware question

Hi all, A local ISP is offering a one year ISDN subscription bundled with either an internal PCI ISDN card or external USB ISDN modem. Neither of the two packages specify what sort of hardware is in the box (and they won't open it so I can see what's inside. So do we also get "software" ISDN modems like the winmodems, or are they at least all hardware? If I buy one of these, are the chances good that it will work without hassles? Thanks Hans

If so, can you tell me how you installed it or send me your config file? If I restart my network (rcnetwork restart) my system freezes at starting eth0 and I can't figure out why. Suse 8.2 picked it up on install and I didn't need to install any drivers. Maybe I should install the ones that came with the card????? I have recently moved from the land of broadband to a farm out in the country, since I now only have one option for internet, my phone company's dial up which requires some special software to connect that is windows only, I am wondering if it is possible to use the internet connection sharing in windows to connect my sue box to the internet, My wife's computer has the modem in it and I can sit down at my computer and get on the internet and her computer will automatically dial up. But I can't do this from my suse box. I'm just wondering if anyone else has done this successfully? Rob

Packages deleted after upgrade with YaST2

Does YaST2 leave the RPM's that were downloaded during an upgrade and subsequently installed in a type of /tmp dir? I've just completed upgrading the entire KDE to ver 3.1.3 and am not clear as to whether YaST cleans up after itself.
