Hi all,
Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure
to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and
StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the
shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the
rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each
time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Is there
a way to make it permanent and read the new fonts like it does the
ones the system installs or is that a no-no?

Hi:
I just bought this printer, thinking it would work right out of the box. I'm
running SUSE 9.3 with CUPS, and it does not seem to support this model.
Anybody got this printer to work? Any pointers would help.
Best regards.

Impress does not play sound on Linux.
However, it does with Openoffice on XP.
I have had an exchange with the developer and now understand
what is causing the delay on Linux. He offers this as a work around
while they are sorting out the real solution.

However, it would be nice to substitute on SUSE 10.2 fmj which is
available for SUSE 10.2 either from Packman or SUSE, I don't
remember. However, I have not got that to work.
In addition I have not been able to translate his instructions for jmf
to a working solution as yet.
If anyone knows how to get this working on SUSE and would willing
to write up something clear for the rest of that would really be neat.
Cheers,
Bob

Hi,
I have the OpenSuse 10.2 DVD from Linux Format magazine. I was going to
install it in a dual-boot arrangement with XP. However, based on what I
have read, during the installation, it asks you to choose your desktop
(KDE, GNOME, XFCE, or whatever). While I don't have any distribution
installed at present, previous installations allowed you to choose the
desktop you wanted to use when you booted.
Is there a way to install all available desktops/windows managers and
then choose the one you want to use when you boot?
Many thanks in advance.

Is there something small and simple? All I want is to set up a simple home
database. Items, serial numbers maybe a couple more fields. Every time I go
looking all I seem to find is stuff geared at running a Fortune 500 company.
Thanks

I am using Suse 10.2 on two different machines. One is a new Dell Poweredge 2970, the other is an older (2002) "no-name" server. Both have experienced a strange and severe problem since I installed Suse.
Basically the file system is put into a read-only state. While the OS and all apps are still running and I can log in a view files/logs etc. nothing can write to the disks. Obviously this causes all kinds of problems. The only way to get the filesystem into a more interactive state is a hard reboot.
The first two times this occurred, there were messages in the /var/log/messages file relating to megasas, however as soon as the system was restarted, these warnings disappeared. I believe the file was not actually written to the disk when the system freaked out so once logging resumed those entries were lost. The messages are somewhat similar to these that I found via a Google search:
sd 1:2:0:0: megasas: RESET -286287 cmd=8a
megasas: [ 0]waiting for 12 commands to complete
megasas: [ 5]waiting for 12 commands to complete
megasas: [10]waiting for 12 commands to complete
megasas: [15]waiting for 12 commands to complete
...
megasas: [170]waiting for 12 commands to complete
megasas: [175]waiting for 12 commands to complete
megasas: failed to do reset
sd 1:2:0:0: megasas: RESET -286287 cmd=8a
megasas: cannot recover from previous reset failures
sd 1:2:0:0: megasas: RESET -286287 cmd=8a
megasas: cannot recover from previous reset failures
sd 1:2:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery
Saturday the problem happened on the Dell server, although this time there is no mention of megasas in the logs files.
A search of this list did not find any reference to megasas and all too many unrelated results for a read-only filesystem :).
System Specs:
Dell PowerEdge 2970
Opteron 2.0GHz 64-bit
4 GB memory
3x 73GB Hard Drive (RAID 5)
PERC 5i
"No-name server"
Dual P3 1GHz
1GB memory
Dual 36GB hard drives (no RAID)
I appreciate any help. Let me know if more information is needed.

Anyone actually seen this work with 10.2?
It never seems to attempt to join the 224.0.0.251 multicast group.

Hi all,
Sometimes I have a CD/DVD go bad etc and it will not come out of the CD
reader. As root I try the eject command and it will not work saying that the
CD is busy. So far I've ended up rebooting to get the !"§$ CD out. Is there a
way to force the eject command to work without rebooting?
Thanks,
JIM

Hi list,
I put this onto a new threat, since I bunged up the previous mail's
threat...
I am trying to use KDE desktop sharing. However I am unable to login
into the remote desktop via http (time out error) or via remote desktop
connection (Kwallet asks for a password but does not accept the
invitation password).
I have enabled Firewall access to ports etc.
So what I would need is a how-to to that explains from scratch what
other things need to be enabled to run desktop sharing.
Also I cannot find the log file for the vnc server (none under
/var/log/) - where would that be located and under what name.
Oddly I can start vnc manually and tunnel into it via putty/tighvnc. The
logfile than is in my home directory.
Thanx
Herry
