Hi all,
Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure
to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and
StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the
shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the
rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each
time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Is there
a way to make it permanent and read the new fonts like it does the
ones the system installs or is that a no-no?
end of line

Shell commands:
xset fp+ <new font directory>
xset fp rehash

Hey, for all of you KDE3 hold outs, someone's finally taking the
initiative to fork it to a new project:
http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/
So far, they're only maintaining .deb packages for Ubuntu, but if you
want to see KDE3 live on, it might be worth starting a project on the
OBS.

I thought I had solved the KMail problem, but it's back. I give up!
I have installed Thunderbird, and will use that, even tho I liked
KMail better.
Does anybody know how to add a "sig" in T-Bird? I had to add the one
below by hand.

Hello,
I am wondering since some time how others cope with patch management on
OpenSUSE Clients, when you have a bunch of PCs in a network.
Somebody who can recommend a open source tool to cover the basics (e.g.
a tool automating updates with zypper over ssh or something similar)?
Thanks!
Regards,
Ivan

SuSE 11.2, KDE 4.3.5
I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.2 a few weeks ago and have been banging
my head against walls since. I am experiencing text entry problems.
1. TAB key acts strange sometimes.
- In konsole (2.3.1), sometimes tabbing to complete a command
does nothing, other times it works like I am used to
(displaying a list of possible completions).
When tab completion works, the typed characters are
displayed as normal black
characters on white background. When it doesn't work,
the character colors are reversed.
When not working properly, if I type and extra space ' '
character, and then backspace
one character, then tab completion works. One really
odd thing is that I can run several
instances of konsole, and tab completion will work on
some and not on others.
- In gnumeric (1.9.13), tab sometimes will not go to the
next field unless an extra space is typed at
the end of the field data. Having to type an extra ' '
space character is a recurring theme here.
- In gnucash (2.2.9) tab acts the same as in gnucash. In
both cases, this never happened in 11.1.
- In firefox (3.5.9) tab "sometimes" acts the same as
gnucash and gnumeric (above). Also, getting
firefox to list possible URL connections from history
sometimes requires hitting the ' ' space key.
At other times, firefox will display possible
completions, but will not tab select them until a space
key is pressed. The same behaviors occur in common
drop box screens, such as google's search
text entry; again a seemingly random behavior.
These problems show in many other app's.
2. Spell check and text entry is strange:
- In abiword (2.6.8), thunderbird (3.0.4) and emacs
(23.1.1) there are several strange things
"SOMETIMES" strings are not echoed from the app, but
are instead displayed in a small text box that
pops up somewhere on the monitor. The text box
appears for each string and goes away after
the string is completed. "As you type" spell checking
is not performed. This problem is really
annoying.
"SOMETIMES" the strings are displayed on the app while
typing, but spell check is not performed
until after the string is completed.
SOMETIMES "as you type" spell checking works as in
previous versions of the OS. The string
is underlined as soon as it doesn't match anything
in the dictionary.
I've tried to google these problems, but the search strings are so
common that there are way too hits to be of use. I'm sure these aren't
really random happenings, but I haven't been able to see a pattern yet.
Any help?
TIA
Jim

Hello SuSE people,
Recently upgraded to KDE4.4 andI now receive the following message:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nepomuk Indexing Agents Have Been Disabled
The Nepomuk service is not available or fully operational and attempts to
rectify this have failed. Therefore indexing of all data stored in the Akonadi
PIM service has been disabled, which will severely limit the capabilities of
any application using this data.
The following problems were detected:
Nepomuk is not running.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, remember stuff on this list talking about Akonadi/Nepomuk but can't recall
or find what it is about. There was a solution. Just don't know what it was
about. Please remind me.

Since updating my system to 11.2 WLAN is broken in that knetworkmanager lists all reachable access points but connecting is not
possible, even if I switch my router (and connection settings) to unencrypted.
Since knetworkmanager shows all access points and their signal strength I'm sure my WLAN hardware is not broken.
Now I switched with yast2 to traditional (ifup) based network setup.
This did not change anything:
Still ethernet based connection works, but 'ifup eth1' (for WLAN) fails on getting an IP address:
Starting DHCP4 client on eth1. . . . . . .
eth1 DHCP4 continues in background
It is still possible to list access points with "Netzwerk durchsuchen" on a page of the 'yast2 lan' configuration module.
The only single visible difference is a polling action which starts immediately after switching to traditional setup (which
shows up my /var/log/messages because of my ipw2100 module debug flags):

The 'unassociated' messages repeat every second.
I really would like to know what's going wrong here and if it is an Intel resp. ipw2100 specific problem.

I have a deskjet F2280. Normal photocopy paper works fine.
To get high quality prints, I have to use HP paper. It will not feed any other
(I have tried kodak and epson which I'd like to use).
Printer setup by yast. OS 11.2 with KDE 3.4.5
Is there any way I can fool it into thinking it's HP paper?
Thanks

Just did a network install of 11.3 RC1 on my Dell laptop. I connected
every USB dodad to see how hardware discovery went. Overall, things look
really good. I had only these things happen (that I found thus far):
1. In the network install, the initial attempt at finding the install
server failed. It then went to a character-based version, where I could
specify the wi-fi and not eth0 should be used. I did not see that option
in the GUI install. Perhaps I missed it. But the character install got
the 11.3 install parts, and then it was business as usual with the
openSUSE GUI install.
2. On my nvidia chipset, it used the Nouveau driver, which is now the
default. Whereas the effects work with the the NVidia driver on 11.2,
this driver keeps disabling the effects. I will see if I can get the
driver to work. If not, I will change to the Nvidia driver.
3. Sound. But then again, it would not be a SUSE distro without sound
issues... Sound works in YaST. But programs like Amarok emit no sound
from internet audio sources. They claim to be playing something. But I
hear nothing. I will sort this out. I am only describing what you get
out of the can. Perhaps there is a simple solution.
My overall impression is that 11.3 looks to be a keeper. For us, the
last keeper (we tell our customers to buy) was 10.3. Maybe we are a .3
release user. But I think this release is worth a look.
Tonight I will check out the new lightweight desktop.
