Hi all,
Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure
to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and
StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the
shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the
rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each
time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Is there
a way to make it permanent and read the new fonts like it does the
ones the system installs or is that a no-no?

xset fp+ <new font directory>

Hi,
I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about
a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or
the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. I am setting
this repo up for SLE9, I have tried to use createrepo but I keeping
getting errors.

Now I have a bootable kernel I have worked though matters with 11.4
All the personal config came though intact :-)
A lot of the system config has been altered and I'm not sure if that is
just 11.3/11.4 differences or what.
These are the problems I see now
1. KDM does not work. The greeter fails.
The log file reads
X.Org X Server 1.9.3
Release Date: 2010-12-13
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX
Current Operating System: Linux BigBoy 2.6.37.6-0.5-pae #1 SMP

Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda3 resume=/dev/sda2 splash=silent quiet

Build Date: 22 February 2011 10:15:34PM
Current version of pixman: 0.20.0
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Apr 30 07:12:51 2011
(==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(II) [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled.
No protocol specified
kdmgreet: cannot connect to X server :0
There is nothing wrong with X. I can start it with 'startx'
from the command line under both the root account and my
personal account and with a few oddities (see later) it works.
I don't know what to make of that message or how to proceed.
2. Lots of odd errors in config files
Many things started from the command line produce stuff like
this

3. Latency on menubar
Just about every application, thunderbird & firefox in
particular, but all the KDE applications as well, have a delay
when top menubar items are clicked. I am used to this on LiveCD
where the system has to drag in the relevant stuff from the CD
but not on a real system. The KDE applications seem to cache
items, the GTK applications don't seem to.
4. No sound.
Sound has stopped working.
Testing with LiveCD tells me its not a hardware problem
The mixer icon doesn't appear in the system tray on starting
KDE4 and when it is started everything is set to zero.
Even then sound isn't working.
This isn't a modules problem, the modules are all loaded
as I expect.

Hey, for all of you KDE3 hold outs, someone's finally taking the
initiative to fork it to a new project:
http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/
So far, they're only maintaining .deb packages for Ubuntu, but if you
want to see KDE3 live on, it might be worth starting a project on the
OBS.

After all the problems with 11.4 and 11.3 on my ThinkPad, I've decided
to blow it all away and revert to 11.0. At least that worked well.
Problems:
11.4 - unable to use KDE, as system locked up and display faded
11.3, unreliable USB detection. Why no "Safely remove" option? Display
often shifted about 1/2" to right, but mouse didn't. Poorer
performance. General frustration with KDE 4.
As I've often pointed out, since I first saw KDE 4, a few years ago, it
needs a lot of work to be anywhere near as useful as 3.5
It would be *VERY* nice if support were resumed for 11.0, which would
appear to be the last decent openSUSE distro. My experiences with KDE 4
are almost enough to send me back to Windows! What a piece of crap!!!

If I manually put in the HorizSync, VertRefresh and a modeline generated
by cvt in monitor.conf, kdm would not even start. I have to resort to
using xrandr to add and set the mode. What could be the problem?
Thanks.

(Linus Torvalds about the superiority of Linux on the Amterdam

Hello SuSE people,
Running 11.3 with KDE3.5.10
Did an upgrade of 11.3 last night and Open Office was uninstalled and Libre
Office installed in it's place. It ooens up and will accept input but will not
open any existing documents. If I go to File > Open I do not get a list of
any existing documents nor any in the Recent Documents. If I then close it,
it will not open a second time. I must log out and then back in again.
Then, if I go to a document and right click on it then choose Open with
Libre Office nothing happens. Libre Office does not open. But, if I have
logged out and then back in again, when I go to a document and right click it
and choose Open with Libre Offfice writer, it then opens a dialog about
recovering the document. Then I tell it to recover the document and it opens
that document. After that, and after logging out and back in again, that
document will whow up in the Recent Documents list and can be opened from
within Libre Office.
Clear as mud, right? Links maybe? Hope somebody can point me in the right
direction here. The handling and editing of documents is an important part of
my use.

A couple of weeks ago (I think) I posted a message stating that vlc will
not even start under openSUSE 11.4.
I just re-installed 11.4, as a totally new installation, and did all the
necessary updates to all files. Still no vlc. xine works fine but not vlc.
I then remembered that someone - I *think* that it was Mark Goldstein -
responded to my original post with the suggestion to run vlc with the
prefix of 'strace'; I just amended the properties for vlc and now it
runs correctly for me.
I don't remember thanking Mark for his suggestion which I now do: Thank
you Mark for the 'fix', greatly appreciated.
But before I remembered Mark's suggestion, I went looking for an answer
and found that there is a bug in KDE4.6.0 and which, as implied, has
been fixed in KDE 4.6.1. Which is quite nice to know....if you only one
knew how to upgrade your current KDE 4.6.0 to 4.6.1 (let alone to
4.6.2!) to get rid of just one (presumably) small bug to make vlc work.
As I have forgotten over time the mystical incantations required to
manipulate the Repositories info in (?)YaST to be able to upgrade this
current release of 11.4 with KDE 4.6.0 to KDE 4.6.1, would some kind
person, using plain, simple English, please, if it is not too much
trouble, tell me what I should do to add whatever necessary repos (NO
runes and in abbreviated form please!-please) to my installation so as
to be able to upgrade to KDE 4.6.1?
And as it is, in my time zone, Good Friday, A Happy Easter to everybody.

hello everyone,
i have there 3 ati machines: one with mobility radeon 3200, another
with mobility radeon 4200, but the new one has mobility radeon 5470
and i am unable to configure it as i've made with the others: just
click on http://opensuse-community.org/ati.ymp and the it adds the
correct mirrors. but not on this new machine, if i do that i'll lost X
forever, will have to use failsafe and then remove/purge the package
and the mirror. If i try the proprietary driver directly from the ati
site things gets even worse.
i want to use all features from this video card, any help is welcome.
