Hi all,
Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure
to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and
StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the
shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the
rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each
time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Is there
a way to make it permanent and read the new fonts like it does the
ones the system installs or is that a no-no?

xset fp+ <new font directory>
xset fp rehash

Hey, for all of you KDE3 hold outs, someone's finally taking the
initiative to fork it to a new project:
http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/
So far, they're only maintaining .deb packages for Ubuntu, but if you
want to see KDE3 live on, it might be worth starting a project on the
OBS.

Hi,
I have done a fresh openSUSE 11.3 (32bit) install on a Lenovo
ThinkCentre M58p 6234-1AG (C2D E8400, Q45 Express, GMA 4500, 82567LM-3).
First problem was, that the network card was not recognized, I had to
build in a second one. Fortunately after updating the system and a
reboot, also the 82567LM-3 was working.
With the normal Kernel 2.6.34.7-0.2-desktop the system works, but if I
try to but with the Xen-Kernel 2.6.34.7-0.2-xen, the boot begins, but
suddenly stops in a very early state.
The last messages I see are:
Doing fast boot
Creating ...
Then the screen goes blank and finaly in sleep mode. To reboot I have to
power off and then power on again the system :-(
In the Grub-menu.lst originally I had:
###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: xen###
title Xen -- openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.2
root (hd0,0)
kernel /xen.gz vgamode=0x317 vgamode=0x317
module /vmlinuz-2.6.34.7-0.2-xen root=/dev/...part6 resume=/dev
/...part2 splash=silent quiet showopts vga=0x317
module /initrd-2.6.34.7-0.2-xen
I already tried to remove the second "vgamode"-entry, finaly all
"vgamode" and "vga"-options and set "splash=0" but this did not helped,
"nomodeset" is not doing anything too (I think it's only for Nvidia).
Any other idea?
Thanks a lot.

I thought I had solved the KMail problem, but it's back. I give up!
I have installed Thunderbird, and will use that, even tho I liked
KMail better.
Does anybody know how to add a "sig" in T-Bird? I had to add the one
below by hand.

Hello,
I am wondering since some time how others cope with patch management on
OpenSUSE Clients, when you have a bunch of PCs in a network.
Somebody who can recommend a open source tool to cover the basics (e.g.
a tool automating updates with zypper over ssh or something similar)?
Thanks!
Regards,
Ivan

Guys,
What is the proper entry for 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts? I have seen discussion
that 127.0.0.2 is deprecated so that leaves a problem with dnsdomainname if you
remove the 127.0.0.2 entry and leave the 127.0.0.1 entry as:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost yourRealHostname
In this situation, dnsdomainname resolves to localdomain:
15:39 phoenix:~> dnsdomainname
localdomain
Setting the entry as:
127.0.0.1 localhost.youReadDomainName.com localhost yourRealHostname
fixes the return of dnsdomainname, but does not having localdomain cause
problems as well? What say the gurus?

Hi,
I searched for a way to power down my box at a predefined time including
switching off the power from the UPS.
"shutdown -h time" handles the shutdown of the system nicely, but to power
down the UPS some changes have to be done:
/etc/sysconfig/shutdown :
HALT_POWERDOWN_INSERT="/etc/init.d/apcupsd powerdown"
"try-powerdown" will only power down the UPS if it is running on battery at
this time.
The script /etc/init.d/apcupsd from apcupsd-3.14.6-8.1 contains a wrong path
for the apcupsd-lite binary, it should be
APCUPSD_LITE=/sbin/apcupsd-lite
instead of
APCUPSD_LITE=/usr/sbin/apcupsd-lite
Additionally, the action performed in case of "powerdown)" has to be changed:
it should perform action "--power-off" instead of "--killpower".
"--killpower" only takes effect if the UPS is running on battery at this time.
Following patch can apply the changes:
--- apcupsd 2010-07-05 18:34:19.000000000 +0200

Guys (Lars),
I'm building an updated samba (3.5.6) for an old 10.3 box (to run in standalone
mode) and wanted to make sure I got the configure options as close as possible
to the spec file options. I think I have the basic options correct, but want to
check if there are any additional options I should set/change to make sure that
there are no conflicts with any other packages that may rely on the samba files
being in any one particular place. I don't think there is any way to build an
rpm from the spec due to non-existent dependency packages.
From picking through the last 10.3 spec from discontinued/update it looks like
the following will work:
./configure \
--prefix=/usr \
--localstatedir=/var \
--docdir=/usr/share/doc/packages \
--with-privatedir=/etc/samba \
--with-lockdir=/var/lib/samba \
--with-logfilebase=/var/log/samba \
--with-statedir=/var/run/samba \
--with-swatdir=/usr/share/samba \
--with-configdir=/etc/samba \
--enable-cups \
--with-libsmbclient \
--with-winbind
Anybody see any missing or wrong options? Thanks.
