[opensuse] 11.3 i586 - firefox crash and desktop lockup after updates

In gnome, it locks the whole desktop requiring a hard-reset of the box. [opensuse] .bashrc tip for managing multiple boxes, multiple user configs

Guys, This is nothing special, but it was a clever approach to managing your .bashrc over multiple boxes with different user configs for root, you, and other users. The basic approach is just to make use of includes with a couple of conditional checks on $UID or $USER to set the environment accordingly. I'm open if there are other ways or setup tweaks that would make this easier. Also, let me know if you see any red flags. I have never used any sound input devices, now I find that things are greyed out for inputs on my sound card. Yast lists it as MCP51 High Def Audio Hardware info lists driver as snd_hda_intel , Vendor Nvidia. System is a Dell Dimension C521, Athalon64x2, 6g ram, os11.3-64. I installed Skype and it seems to be working if I could get my mic to function, get audio from the other end. On the other hand, is there some functional sound fob I could use??? [opensuse] Problem with preload in 11.3 causes very long boot times

Ever since I did an in-place upgrade to OpenSUSE 11.3 I've been having problems with very (more than 5 minutes) boot times. It only seems to happen about 1 out of every 3 times but never the less it's very annoying. By putting top into vty9 at boot time I was able to figure out that preload is what is causing this delay. Disk is grinding away and everything is halted waiting for i/o. Something changed drastically with preload in 11.3 and I now need to either fix it or remove it. Preload no longer has a /etc/preload.d directory and I can't find any documentation on how the new version of preload works under 11.3. [opensuse] Suse11.3 + Win7 + BitLocker

Dear SUSE fans, beginners and experts, I have a Win7 system which uses BitLocker to protect the hard drive. I converted this system to a dual boot system with Suse11.3. I did following steps: 1. I managed to repartition the system (with Win7 tools) and install Suse. 2. Suse and Win7 are booting both without problems via Grub. 3. I forgot to deactivate BitLocker before the installation of Suse. After the installation of Suse, when I boot into Win7, I'm was always asked for the BitLocker recovery key. After decrypting with BitLocker the Win7 partition I'm no longer asked for the recovery key. The current state of the system is that Win7 and Suse boot without any problems, the Win7 partition is encrypted (no BitLocker protection!). While booting into Win7 BitLocker is no longer asking me for the recovery key. Because of "security" reasons the Win7 partition has to be encrypted. When I try to activate BitLocker again, it gives me following error message: "Because of a change of the Computer, the computer has to be rebooted before the BitLocker Setup." Well I followed the advice of BitLocker and rebooted the system several times but BitLocker still brings the same error message. When I run the recovery tool of Win7 it removes Gub and BitLocker works without any problems (but I can't boot Suse because Grub is gone :( ). If I reinstall Grub, BitLocker gives me the same error message. My current guess is that BitLocker does not like Grub. At the moment I'm standing infront of following dilemma,I have two options: 1. Dualboot Win7 and Suse but not BitLocker protection or 2. Win7 with BitLocker protection but no Suse (at least no Grub to boot Suse). I guess this is a standard problem. I'm for sure not the first one who wants to setup a dual boot system Win7+Suse AND use BitLocker. Some forums suggest to use the Windows boot loader instead of Grub, but I'm a little reluctant towards this idea. What is the solution to this dilemma? [opensuse] Graduated from "Absent trash icon" to disaster

Taking recent hints (and much urging here and elsewhere over the past few months), I thought to upgrade KDE4 from v4.4.4 to 4.5. The instructions for doing so are certainly simple enough and they fairly radiate confidence. The result (detailed below) is that my system is now useless, and I have to plead for help in getting out of the pickle in which I find myself. After executing the simple commands (omitting the optional repo), the first hints of what was going to happen were a few cases in which the installer claimed that it couldn't find expected files. In the absence of better information, I answered "Ignore" for these. After that, there were a remarkably LARGE number of cases in which the installer said that the current RPM seemed to be corrupted, and did I want to continue. I answered Yes in each case, and then Retry. In each case, the RPM turned out not to be corrupted after all, and it was loaded. There were tens of such incidents; I have never encountered even one such in the three years I have been updating RPMs. When the smoke cleared away, I found a desktop which was sluggish in the same sense that a moving glacier is sluggish. From time to time, an error message would appear, as follows: There was a notice reporting that Akonadi was not running, followed later by one saying that Nepomuk was not running. Each of these refered me to userbase. kde.org, and gave no further information. There was one that contained two sentences of the form: "Migration of <pop3 account> to Akonadi failed to create resource: Agent instance creation timed out", where <pop3 account> is the name of one of the Incoming Accounts in the Kmail settings. Since Akonadi didn't load, this would not seem to be surprising. The most recent error message is the following apologetic one: "We are sorry Plasma Desktop Shell closed unexpectedly. Details: Executable:kdeinit4 PID 2678 Signal Segmentation fault (11)". Actually, I do not see that anything is missing from the Desktop that should be there. But since I have never figured out what "Plasma" is supposed to mean in KDE, or what the Plasma Desktop (Shell) means in relation to the Plain Old Desktop, I don't know what this warining is meant to tell me. For quite a long time after the system came up, the mouse cursor was movable on the screen, and the mouse buttons would produce results ten minutes or so after I clicked. Right now, however, the cursor is frozen, dead. When it was still alive (several hours ago), I clicked on the shut down icon in the hope that the system to shut down, but that has not happened, and I will use the hardware reset button. If someone can point the way to inprove this dreadful situation, I will be eternally grateful. Hello: I would like to watch video content at Hungarian TV archive, eg. this one: http://videotar.mtv.hu/Videok/2010/12/23/21/Tarlos_Istvan_Budapest_helyzete… I tried different plugins for firefox but so far I could not find any which is able to play it. (I tested kaffeine starter plugin, mplayer plugin 3.55, gecko media player 1.0.0, totem browser plugin 2.28.1, vlc mozillaplugin 1.1.5-1pm.) I have openSUSE 11.2 and use firefox 3.5.11 (opensuse) and occasionally 3.6.x (mozilla version). Please if you know a plugin which plays the above video, let me know. [opensuse] Slow switch off in KDE 4.5

Dear all, Quite a while ago I upgraded to KDE 4.5 and since then switching off the computer is extremely sluggish. I hoped newer versions would remedy this thing but now I am on KDE 4.5.4 release 9 (with oS 11.3) and no change in this issue, and cannot figure out the reason. Anybody else met this problem? [opensuse] Use LXDE as default desktop - with FreeNX

First, I apologize for hi-jacking a thread when I first wrote this entry to the list. It was not intentional! Now my question... I'm about to setup LXDE as my default desktop environment in openSuSE11.3. So far it works great. I would however, like to have it setup as the default desktop also when accessing the system from outside using FreeNX. Howto set that up? Thanks!
