[opensuse] BadDrawable crash in KDE4, but not FVWM/Gnome

Hello, I am having a strange X crash that seems to happen in OpenSuse 11.3 KDE4 only, but not on FVWM or Gnome, and no easy way to figure out a minimal example. Here's the situation. We are developing an in-house C application that relies on a semi-standard toolkit, HTK. That toolkit has built-in code which displays some windows using standard X libraries. This code runs perfectly fine on Gnome and on FVWM on my system. But under KDE4, it crashes with the following error message X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 62 (X_CopyArea) Resource id in failed request: 0x5c00014 Serial number of failed request: 271 Current serial number in output stream: 415 This seems to happen at the time when it creates one of its windows. I tried to create a minimal example, but that didn't go well: I know exactly nothing about X windows programming, and trying to deal with the code base has thousands lines of code spread between 30 or so files. Everything works just fine on other window managers/Linux versions, so it seems to be specific to the KDE version of 11.3. There is an OpenOffice KDE crash filed against OpenSuse 11.3, with similar symptoms, but the suggested solution is switch off OO-KDE integration, which is of no help for me. Without a minimal example, I don't see how to sensibly file a bug. If anyone can suggest what things I could check for to isolate this problem, this would be much appreciated. [opensuse] Can't login -> 'Module is unknown' - libresmgr.so.1 invalid ELF header?

Guys, Here is a new one for me. I have an (old) backup box running 10.3 that needs an update, but I have to get it to boot first. Currently, the box looks to boot normally (it boots to runlevel 3). The only process that shows a fail is 'resmgr'. At the login prompt, I type my name and pw as normal, then the following occurs: You have new mail. Module is unknown Welcome to openSUSE 10.3 i586 -- Kernel 2.6.22.19-0.3 default (tty1) login: I get thrown right back to the login prompt. So I know I'm sitting there looking at a 100% running system (samba, apache2, postfix, mysql, all running just fine...), but I have no way to login. Looking at the error with resmgr, I see the following boot message: ... lib/libresmgr.so.1 invalid ELF header Huh? I know it is close to Christmas, but I don't need any invalid elfs in my box. Bahumbug... So googling ELF it's some Extended Language Facility, but what I don't know is "is this related to the problem logging in?" If so, how do I fix it? I thought about booting from the install media and then chrooting the install, but if I can't log in, I'm not sure that will work. (I'll try later regardless) Bottom line - if libresmgr.so.1 has a bad ELF header can that be the cause of the no login? If so, how best to fix. Boot from install, chroot & reinstall resmgr? [opensuse] 11.2, libtool, g++ and dynamic libraries

Hi list, we're having a weird problem here. We want to compile a dynamic library for an image processing program (IDL) which is written in C++. There is a makefile that uses libtool to compile with proper switches: libtool --mode=compile --tag=CXX $(CXX) $(CFLAGS) -o <name>.lo -c <name>.cpp libtool --mode=link --tag=CXX $(CXX) -o libmomfbd.la <names>.lo -rpath $(DLM_PATH) Now this works on a Slackware computer, it creates the dynamic library as .libs/libmomfbd.so.0.0.0 On OpenSuse it doesn't :-(( Some observations: I can replace --tag=CXX with --tag=CC. Then it actually compiles, but the library misses symbols and doesn't load. Compiling with tag CXX does not add the flags -fPIC -DPIC to the compiler options. (the Slackware libtool, which is 2.2.6b compared to 2.2.6 in OS, does add those.) So to get a library, I have to - compile with --tag=CXX - manually add the -fPIC -DPIC flags - use the informational output from 'libtool --mode=link --tag=CC ...' (which will call gcc), replace gcc with g++ and link by hand This is ugly, and cannot be intended. But as I'm no programmer, I might have done things wrong. So my question is: Is something wrong in this setup (which works on another machine), or is libtool with g++ broken in OS 11.2 Cheers, Pit PS: Update: I just saw that OS 11.3 uses libtool 2.2.6b, so I installed that (plus libltdl7) for a test. Same result - no lib, and also the PIC flags are still not there. [opensuse] FreeNX on openSUSE11.3 not working/connecting

Hi list and gurus :-) - on my plain vanilla openSUSE11.3 I install FreeNX server & client through the one-click-install from the web. - connecting to my box fails...it 'cannot connect to X server' or something like that. The environment variable DISPLAY is empty. - If I download and use Nomachine's *free* NX server, all is ok. - I don't want to use that version, however. I much prefer the FreeNX edition. I've been able to confirm the problem on 2 other new openSUSE11.3 machines. Anyone? As always, thank you! Best regards, Verner K. [opensuse] 11.3 - zypper up - fails: cpio error ... is a directory (python-distribute, thunar-doc)

Guys In the large update I'm doing on an 11.3 box today, zypper up has failed twice so far with only about 1/4 of the updates done. The errors are cpio error where unpacking the rpm results in zypper up aborting because it is trying to unpack something that should be a file, but instead finds a directory. The error is something to the effect, error extracting .... is a directory. (a)bort (r)etry (i)gnore? So far the following packages have caused the errors: python-distribute thunar-doc Can anyone else confirm this? If so, I'll file the bug. If you want to see anything else, let me know and I'll get it. Hopefully, I will get X back after this update. [opensuse] mail gurus - help: postfix/local - bounced (can't create user output file)??

Guys, I have a weird postfix error that is causing incoming mail to *me* on a new server to bounce. (imap-postfix/procmail/dovecot) Other users are fine. I can move my /var/spool/mail/me inbox to a temp name and I can get mail fine. (which makes me think corrupt mail store/inbox). However, I can access all my email in the original inbox just fine and I was getting mail in that inbox 3 days ago when it was on my old 10.3 install. So I'm a bit bewildered about whether there is some new hidden quoata that I'm violating or what. (inbox was 323M) Also, I don't really know if there are any tools out there that I can use to test my original inbox to see if there is a problem. I haven't been able to confirm this yet, but one difference I seem to recall is the use of subfolders with the old install where this new install does not seem to allow creation of subfolders. i.e.: OLD thunderbird layout <myAccount> Inbox Trash Drafts Av Bar distros centos suse suse-factory Junk <snip> On the new install, I can't create the subdirectories centos, suse, suse-factory. Now I don't know what the heck this would have to do with the inbox anyway since the folder scheme would only effect ~/Mail/yourmailstore and not /var/spool/mail/user, but I thought I would mention it. I have captured both ends of the mail transaction to try and trouubleshoot and I have included them below in case they hold a clue to what it going on. It hung on a couple of attachments where I had to delete the message to cause it to continue, but there was nothing special I could tell about the attachments and after deleting them, I could continue the extraction. So I'm stuck as to how to approach confirming it is an inbox problem and not a setup problem. (although I have 2 other servers with identical setups that work fine, so that does point toward an inbox issue) Googling this turns up answers all over the board. Everything from 'chmod g+s /usr/bin/procmail' to permissions on the inbox. All permission are fine. [opensuse] Firefox crashes always over X from 11.3 to OS X - anybody know anything?

Hi! I've had this problem with Firefox since I installed 11.3 on the server. I'm using the latest OS X on the laptop to access the server. So, I'm using the X server from OS X and ssh -Y to connect to the server. All other X programs work (as far as I can remember), but firefox always crashes. When I launch firefox, I get this: Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "localhost:10.0". And then I get X-window from firefox saying that it crashed and that crash report can be sent. I've always sent the report and hoped that it would be noticed somewhere. However, it's now been quite a while and no update that would fix this, so I'm asking if anybody has any ideas what to do? [opensuse] Catch22 - Install OpenSuse 11.3 on Mac Mini 2010 (nVidia)

Hello, I tried to install an OpenSuse 11.3 system on a second partition on my new Mac Mini, an 64 Intel computer. The other partition is OS X Snow Leopard. The installation works as far as the reboot - then it comes up with a black screen. I traced the problem to a missing nVidia driver and I suposse that I could download one from the net - but there is not a valid system. Anyone running with a Mac Mini and solved the problem?
