Hi all,
Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure
to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and
StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the
shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the
rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each
time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Is there
a way to make it permanent and read the new fonts like it does the
ones the system installs or is that a no-no?
end of line
Tracer
Shell commands:
xset fp+ <new font directory>
xset fp rehash

Hi:
I just bought this printer, thinking it would work right out of the box. I'm
running SUSE 9.3 with CUPS, and it does not seem to support this model.
Anybody got this printer to work? Any pointers would help.
Best regards.

Hello listmates,
I have recently installed NX server, after switching to openSUSE 11.1.
However, I can't seem to log in. It used to work beautifully on openSUSE
10.3.
What I did is the following:
- First of all, to install the NX server, I added the following repository:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/RemoteDesktop/openSUSE_11.1/
>From that
This resulted in the following packages being installed:
- FreeNX
- NX
- freenx-client
- libnxcl1
- After that, I ran nxsetup, which completed without errors.
On the client, I installed version 3.3.0-6 of the NX Client for Linux from
NoMachine. I chose this client because in the past, I have had bad
experiences with the FreenNX client. The NoMachine client has always worked
well for me.
- Trying with the QtNX client, the client simply seems to freeze, without
doing anything after starting the connection.
- Up launching the NX client and entering the connection details, I start
the connection. This takes a while, after which the client responds with:
"Session startup failed". In the detail window, it says a lot more:
NX> 105 /usr/bin/nxserver: line 1371: 13828 Terminated sleep
$AGENT_STARTUP_TIMEOUT
NX> 596 Session startup failed.
NX> 1004 Error: NX Agent exited with exit status 1. To troubleshoot set
SESSION_LOG_CLEAN=0 in node.conf and investigate
"/home/<user>/.nx/F-C-<hostname>-1000-8689F93F7362B387803D3B292867F08C/session".
You might also want to try: ssh -X myserver; /usr/bin/nxnode --agent to
test the basic functionality. Session log follows:
Can't open
/var/lib/nxserver/db/running/sessionId{8689F93F7362B387803D3B292867F08C}:
No such file or directory.
mv: cannot stat
`/var/lib/nxserver/db/running/sessionId{8689F93F7362B387803D3B292867F08C}'NX>
1006 Session status: closed
: No such file or directory
NX> 280 Exiting on signal: 15
FOllowing the troubleshooting advice above, I have set SESSION_LOG_CLEAN=0
in /etc/nxserver/node.conf
I also tried the command "ssh -X myserver; /usr/bin/nxnode --agent" to test
the basic connection from the client. This gives me the following error on
the console:
NX> 1000 NXNODE - Version 2.1.0-72 OS (GPL, using backend: 3.2.0)
NX> 716 Starting NX Agent ...
Error: Aborting session with 'Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again'.
Session: Aborting session at 'Thu Jun 4 11:07:26 2009'.
Session: Session aborted at 'Thu Jun 4 11:07:26 2009'.
NX> 716 NX Agent exited with status: 1
NX> 1001 Bye.
I find this odd, since to me this seems to be a problem with X
authorization, not something to do with NX. I have confirmed that while X
(KDE) is running, no one is logged into the machine at this point.
I have also investigated
/home/<user>/.nx/F-C-<hostname>-1000-8689F93F7362B387803D3B292867F08C/session,
to see if there is some more information there. There, it lists the
following:
NXAGENT - Version 3.2.0
Copyright (C) 2001, 2007 NoMachine.
See http://www.nomachine.com/ for more information.
Info: Agent running with pid '15613'.
Session: Starting session at 'Thu Jun 4 11:14:43 2009'.
Info: Proxy running in server mode with pid '15613'.
Info: Waiting for connection from '127.0.0.1' on port '5000'.
Info: Aborting the procedure due to signal '15'.
Error: Aborting session with 'Unable to open display
'nx/nx,options=/home/<user>/.nx/C-<hostname>-1000-8689F93F7362B387803D3B292867F08C/options:1000''.
Session: Aborting session at 'Thu Jun 4 11:14:43 2009'.
Session: Session aborted at 'Thu Jun 4 11:14:43 2009'.
I enabled logging in /etc/nxserver/node.conf, and the same information is
logged there.
I am a bit stumped as to what to try now. Does anyone have any suggestions,
please?
I'll be grateful for any help or tips which help me solve this.
Kind regards,
Joop

http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/opensuse10.3.review.html should be
MUST READING for management at Novell and at openSuSE.org. It is
eminently fair and for the most part, accurate. I think any
inaccuracies could be attributable to unfamiliarity rather than bias.
If this reviewer hadn't been what I would call a 'Power-user', and had
instead been someone converting from Windows, not only would they
probably not have had a successful install, but would have an article
that Microsoft would probably have printed in full page ads throughout
the world. As it is, it should wake up Senior Management in SuSE.
regards

installed it yesterday on my brand new thinkpad, and most of the basic
stuff seems to be working : tested the wired/wireless connection :ok.
can write DVD's, sound is ok, hibernation and sleep : ok , sdcard reader
: ok, and last but not least, video graphics, weel that's a special case
with this laptop, it includes 2 graphic controller : 1 discrete, the ati
hd3650 and am integrated controller , intel mobile GM45 express chipset.
i knew i wasn't going to get this switchable graphics thing in order...
by default, the installation chooses the intel chipset. which works ok,
but doesn't give you the power of the ATI. i changed the bios setting to
discrete graphics ( swichable off ). when booted into command line, i
could run sax and it installed the correct ATI drivers. but the next
reboot set me back to the intel chipset, and indeed the bios was back to
switchable graphics enabled ?

I followed the instructions from this posting:
http://en.opensuse.org/Setting_up_Squid_NTLM_DansGuardian_Sarg to be
able to setup NTLM Authentication. One instruction says to change the
security setting in smb.conf to "security=ads". Everything works, and
Winbind lists the users and groups.
However, when I go into YaST to add SMB shares, YaST changes the
security back to being "user". This means that all of the shares
created on the server cannot be accessed unless a user account is
added to smbpasswd. What I would like is to have Samba shares
authenticated by AD. Can I setup Samba using YaST to be able to join
a domain as a member server (security=ads) and authenticate Samba
shares using AD through YaST and, if so, how is it done?

The proxy works for firefox but not for konq in 11.0 kde 4. I've tested the
proxy via yast and it works fine. Also, other browsers recognise it. Bug?
I'm using squid on a 10.3 server with 11.0 and KDE4
Thanks.

I just notice that there will be nomore kde3 for the upcomming
openSUSE 11.2.
I don't want to grin. Not necessary.
I just wanted to ask here what do you have in kde3.5 and don't find in
kde4 and you would like to have. Not to say you will have it but to
give info to devs...
I stopped using kde4 on 11.1 for problems in the config panel and lack
of understanding of the new windows layout. I expect this to be solved
before next release;
what do you think? be constructive :-)
jdd
NB: I miss the kweather applet, but it don't work neither in kde 3.5 :-(

I have used Opensuse now for some years since the days of 5.3 in fact and
Linux in general well before that since the days of the Early 0.9 kernels all
floppy distro no X i also ran Slackware and Red Hat and tested a few more
along the way so i know a thing or two about Linux i have even brewed up my
own distro at one time .
It has to be said now after attempting to get 11.2 MS2 and 11.2 MS3 to play
the game the standards of releases has fallen to a new all time low how on
earth have you got the front to call these releases anything other than Alpha
at best .
The sound system is a total mess this pulseaudio thing is what nothing more
than a total blight on the system there needs to be a choice for users risk
pulseaudio or can that and run safe Alsa sound system . I know you are going
to say Alsa doesn't do this or that but unlike pulseaudio it never failed to
work it never chopped the audio
Beagle ! what a total pain and complete resource hog once again it needs to be
a LOT easier to un-install or not install at all With the requisite warning
for those that do install it beware it will hog your CPU for excessive amounts
of time , Likewise Nepomuk .
KDE now i actually don't happen to believe all that has been said about the
use of or rather almost ENFORCED use of KDE4.x and whilst it is sort of
shaping up it will not be ready for the 11.2 release no way too much still
don't play ball nice at all and needs sorting a lot to do with multimedia
just plain does not work or if it does thanks to the enforced use of that
pulseaudio stuff jitters and skips or as happens here when playing a DVD it
stops then repeats a sylable carries on for a few seconds then does the same
again well i spose if you like Norman Collier that's all well and good i
think he's a prat .
It seems now that no one actually gives a monkeys about the standards of the
releases now that some members of staff have been dispensed with it seems
and quite probably others the wrong staff members were dispensed with what is
it going to take to get this distro back on track and back to a decent
standard , Even the Ill fated 10.0 was far better than 11.2 is right now and
arguably better than 11.2 as well.
Then we have this whole License thing about codecs and DVD playing software
things like DHT as well , People purchase a distro and rightfully so expect
to be able to install it bang in a DVD and have it play not go faffing around
having to instantly pollute a new install with essentially foreign packages
not everyone has a good enough Internet connection to do that any way ,
maybe it is time for Opensuse to find a new home where German licensing rules
don't apply .
This mail is aimed squarley at the Opensuse team who o know will call me for
everything under the sun plus some it is a two way street don forget i have
gripes with quite a few there who's attitudes STINK but i am not interested
in them right now , Contray to the comments that will come in from one in
perticular a lot of the content of this email will be agreed by a
considerable number of people a lot will keep stum they dont want their name
to appear thats ok by me some may just get brave enough to agree fair
dincum blue but do not for one moment think i am a one off this world is
full of people that think one thing and say another for the sake of not
standing out
There is a lot more i could mention maybe i will shortly but one thing is for
sure the situation as of this moment is a total disgrace to the SuSe name and
a very poor shadow of it's former good name sort it out people , There is no
point being the first ones to release something if it is a complete screwup a
little more time in the R&D and less in the sales will work wonders
Pete .
