Hi list,
speaking about software raid, not hardware controller based.
I am trying to go for some local OpenSuse machine and adding some
storage to it. Was considering Raid6, and now reading about a bit and
people left and right scaremongering about the larger the disks these
days in the double digit terabyte capacities even, the more likely it
is that during a reconstruction of a raid subsequent errors would
occur.
I would absolutely like to keep my data consistent, and I am not
thinking about double digit terabytes either, would stick to 2TB or
4TB disks, with Raid6 thats at least 4 physical drives.
Now I am wondering if it possible to use a good robust file system
that can add some more parity or check blocks or redundancy on top of
the hardware disks, to absolutely be able to always read my data.
I can't add multiple machines or like those high availability stuff
like clusters and what not I read about DRBD (Distributed Replicated
Block Device), or maybe I am just too scared by those technical terms
or consider myself to be just a simpleton and wanting to keep it
rather simple.
My use case here is also not constant availablity, when a disk needs
to be replaced, so be it, but I don't want to lose my data that I can
not ever read certain parts of it again or such stuff.
The thing that came to my mind was, if there is some file systems that
would add redundancy and robustness onto the mdraid system of the
linux kernel?
Anyone with some useful insights? Roughly speaking, I was considering
some simple pcie esata interfaced controller card and an external case
enclosure with esata port and portmulitplier stuff inside, that can
present at least 4 physical disks as JBOD, just a bunch of disks, so
that the Linux can seem them all separately.
Speed and rebuild times are not my concern, but data persistence and
data integrity. Not even number of physical disks, I could live with
even one of those 8 bay device enclosures and cases that are out there
on the market.
Thanks for any help and hints.

The disk is indeed smart capable and it works fine, as long as I call
smartctl with "-d sat,16", which I do:

Hello,
I am trying to use festival TTS. It needs to be run as a server. The
instructions are to enter in a console
" sudo crontab -e" command then to add
@restart /usr/bin/festival --server
Tha is straightforward, but then I don't know how to proceed from
there. I read the
man page for crontab and it says that once the commands are specified,
you have to exit the editor that is specified (I guess in my system) and
then the crontab file becomes active. I have no idea where to proceed
after I past the command into the window. I tried typing exit, q and
control q, but nothing happens. The menu of the window says to save the
output, but when I try that it gives a blank box to type a name to save
it to. What is the correct way to finish the task Any help would be
appreciated. Gustav

I just noticed that uBlock Origin has disappeared from my FF toolbar,
and no longer turns up in the context menu either. I noticed that it
had auto-updated today so I deleted it and reinstalled it, but still
have the same symptoms. Anybody else seeing anything similar?
I also discovered that FF will no longer access a whole bunch of
websites, including e.g. addons.mozilla.org, whilst I can still ping
them in a terminal. I use DoH (DNS over HTTPS) so I changed the mode
from 3 (only DoH) to 2 (prefer DoH but fall back to regular DNS) and it
all magically started working again. I have no idea what's going on
there either, and would welcome any shared experience or suggestions
about that as well.
I'm running FF 60.8.0esr on Leap 15.0 (I haven't updated it for a while
so I expect it isn't quite up to date, but at least I know that it
wasn't an FF update that caused my problems.)

there was mouse configuration in systemsettings5 -> input devices -> mouse
to adjust the interval considered for double clicking but is no longer
there.
lately my mouse, logitech thumb track-ball has become quite touchy with
click timing and I wanted to try to lengthen/increase the time delay for
double click interval to perhaps solve.
how may I now adjust that timing. and I have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf and
grep -ir mouse /etc/X11/*
has no output or blank output

I'm using DNSmask lcoally.
Mostly it is fine.
I have a line in /etc/dnsmasq.conf that read
# or if you want it to read another file, as well as /etc/hosts, use
# this.
addn-hosts=/etc/dnsmasq.d/block.hosts.txt
The idea is to have lines like
127.0.0.1 addserver.mtv.com
in there so that I don't see adverts.
In that, it works.
But to get some sites, such as HuffPost.ca, to work, I need to allow and
advertising site, guce.advertising.com.
So first I commented it out of the file, started the line is a hash - "#"
just like works /etc/hosts, and restarted DNSMasq.
Well it still go pinged to 127.0.0.1.
I presumes it was a TTL issue and waited.
No it still came back.
That was last night.
Its still like that this morning.
Now I take the like out of the file altogether.
Still the problem.
In fact all the lines that begin
# 127.0.0.1
are like that.
The hash to comment them out isn't working.
Now I remove that line altogether from /etc/dnsmasq.conf and restart dnsmasq.
But still a ping or nslookiup to those addresses comes back as 127.0.0.1
TTL? Cache?

Hello,
My OS 15.1 desktop computer with nvidia goes crazy since yesterday.
After two or three days without reboot the KDE desktop suddenly freezed.
I had to reset per hardware button.
After reboot I used zypper up to bring the system to the latest updates.
Now it freezes from time to time:
after some minutes of working (browsers, or email, or digikam) it gets
unresponsive. First the mouse cursor doesn't move. After a minute or two
the cursor moves a bit, but immediately freezes again. After a while the
cursor disappears. The keyboard doesn't respond to anything.
After a reboot (or if I log out and in again) the "greeting page" (the
kde login page) showns scrambled: only a part, or artifacts, or a white
screen with a black border - creatively changing each time. I can enter
the password and hit enter and get the desktop. After a short while it
freezes for a second and shows a message like "kde display restarted"
(could not read it really, was shown too short).
When clicking in the menu "log out" the question "log in out in 30
seconds" is shown but the two buttons below are not visible or
scrambled. I can hit enter though.
At the moment the system is in an unusable state.
Where can I look for what happened? What to search for?
What data can I provide here so that somebody can help me? Where/how do
I find this data?
Thanks for your help. I'll check mail when 15.1 allows...
