HELP!! KDM shut my system down, again!
Has anyone else seen this??? I just upgraded to SuSE 8.2 from SuSE 7.3, and I was logged in remotely via ssh (actually, at a Starbucks via 802.11.) I lost me connection to the 801.11 Access Point, and when I got logged back on, my SuSE 8.2 machine would not respond. When I got home, I noticed that my SuSE system had gone through an orderly shutdown and halt. The system log (/var/messages) looks like this! Sep 7 15:29:51 davinci sshd[1784]: Accepted rsa for simmons from ::ffff:208.54.143.1 port 49912 Sep 7 15:54:53 davinci -- MARK -- Sep 7 15:59:00 davinci /USR/SBIN/CRON[2177]: (root) CMD ( rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.hourly) Sep 7 16:14:53 davinci -- MARK -- Sep 7 16:28:32 davinci kdm[1003]: fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe) Sep 7 16:28:33 davinci init: Switching to runlevel: 0 Sep 7 16:28:36 davinci kernel: nfsd: last server has exited Sep 7 16:28:36 davinci kernel: nfsd: unexporting all filesystems SuSE 8.2 has done this to me twice before. Why would something crashing in KDM shutdown my system??? And a better question might be why is KDM even involved with an external ssh session? Gerry Simmons linux@darykon.cet.com

No...

I don't know. But kdm can halt and reboot the system (it is an option), so if it crashes, who knows what could happen... You see, if something crashes it is because something is going wrong on it. Try to reinstall kdm, or reconfiguring it. Who knows...

Right. Then, use something else. You can use gdm, or wdm. I use wdm myself, and I find it faster to start than kdm, specially when I'm not going to use kde later. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
