[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Hi all, We will have the Week 8 meeting for the openSUSE Conference 2019 tomorrow on Feb. 26 at 18:00 UTC on the opensuse-project channel on freenode IRC. We are in Phase 1 of accepting talks. Speakers have been notified of their accepted talks. Most talks have been confirmed. However, there are currently 6 speakers who have not confirmed their talks. If by March 1, these talks are not confirmed, we will move into Phase 2 for accepting talks. This means that the talks that are not confirmed (currently 6) by March 1 will be withdrawn and the next highest rated talks will be accepted. I have sent each person that has not confirmed their talk a personal email reminding them to confirm their talk by March 1 or that is will be withdrawn. Reminders: There is an event in Nuremberg happening at the same time as oSC19 that will be highly attended by opticians. The optician event was organized after we already had the contracted dates for the location of oSC19. The amount of opticians attending their event may cause the price of the hotel to increase. Please consider booking your hotel for oSC19 ASAP. The prices of hotels in Furth and Erlangen (cities nearby) don't appear to have an increase in price; same with airbnb prices. We just have start the bi-weekly meeting for the event with other Asian Community this week and I saw many interest from community to come to our event. Having said that, seems that we need additional budget for oSAS especially for TSP. I discuss with some people who involve in the local committee in the past and it looks like that if openSUSE can increased TSP budget it will be good for community. Why GSoC budget cannot be allocated to openSUSE.Asia Summit so that we can increase the participation from people accross the Asia or other parts of the world? Is there any specific reason about that? We are part of openSUSE and logically the money is more appropriate if it is allocated for openSUSE activities than to be donated to other organization. [opensuse-project] First Phase for openSUSE Conference Talks Begins

openSUSE is pleased to announce the first phase for accepting talks for the openSUSE Conference 2019 (oSC19) has begun. A total of 80 talks were submitted during the call for papers, which began in late fall and ended Feb. 4. In total, there were 42 normal talks, two long workshops, four short workshops, 19 short talks and seven lighting talks submitted. The review team rated all the submitted abstracts and selected 22 normal talks, two long workshops, four short workshops, 13 short talks and five lighting talks. Speakers have been notified of their accepted talk and must confirm their talk by March 1. If a speaker doesn’t confirm their talk by March 1, the talk will be withdrawn and the next highest rated talks will be accepted to fill the slot as part of the second phase of the talk selections for oSC19. Phase 2 will run from March 2 to March 16. The schedule for the conference will be published shortly after Phase 2. There are five tracks listed for the conference this year. The tracks are: openSUSE Open Source Software Cloud and Containers Embedded Systems Desktop and Applications The openSUSE Conference will take place at the Z-Bau in Nuremberg, Germany, from May 24 – 26. Hi, We would like to let you know that due to the lack of mentors and org admins, openSUSE won't participate in Google Summer of Code (GSoC)[1] this year. In the last time, some people have claimed that participating in GSoC is not worthwhile and that we don't get anything out of it. We strongly disagree with this statement. Many motivated students have got to know and joined openSUSE thanks to GSoC (such as both of us). In our view, mentoring is one of the most important parts of an open source project. Welcoming new contributors and investing some of our free time to help them makes openSUSE much more than just some software, whose code is available online. It is not only about hacking and the number of students that stay in our community, but also about sharing our culture of working openly and creating awareness of the open source movement in the next generation of developers. GSoC gives us the chance to reach students all around the world that most likely wouldn't hear about openSUSE in another way. In addition, it allows students to work full time in open source projects by supporting them economically. Because of that, we hope to see openSUSE again in GSoC.
