Hello Ambies and Lizzards all over the world...
Next week (April 20-21) we'll have our annual Greek FOSS Communities
conference in Athens. We prepare our participation. We'll have a booth
and 3 presentations (including the #oSC13). Right now we're doing the
booth logistics. For more information about preparations check out the
wiki page [1].
Since we'll be in Athens, we planned a release party there. Our
Hackerspace friends, provide their space (and beers) and we'll bring
everything else. For more information about it, check out our connect
[2] announcement (in Greek). At the bottom, there are facebook and plus
events.
Next week, I'll be back with report and pictures from both events.
Have phun,
Stathis

Hi,
I am a third year BTech student from VJTI, Mumbai.
Would love to contribute to the community through the Android app.
I have been working on Android for almost a more than a year now and
have worked on a number of innovative apps. Two of them published on
the Play Store can be found here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=R-on-Droid#?t=W251bGwsbnVsb…..
A bit late to post here, but from my discussions till now with my
mentor Manu Gupta, I intend to implement the following:
The Planets, News and Lizards sections with RSS reader and WebViews.
Notifications to users about recent posts as and when they get posted.
I have the experience of implementing both of the above in an app I developed.
Have begun work on bringing these and other functionalities of the
website to the app.
Any suggestions are welcome,
Thanks and regards,
Prathamesh

Hi Manu,
This email is in reference to GSOC 2013 idea mentioned on your page.
I am 4th year Computer Science student from BITS Pilani, India. I am
proficient in Java and I have experience with building Android
applications. I developed an Android app for my college fest which was
a simple RSS reader to notify people about the events during college
fest. Apart from that I have great interest in Algorithms, computer
networks and operating systems. I constantly take part in online
coding competitions. I am also proficient in C, PHP, JavaScript and
MySQL. I developed a quizzing website for my college's annual fest
which was based on PHP and JavaScript.
Regarding the app, how can we access the data from openSuse planet.
Means is there any RSS feed generated for each activity or do I have
to get the data directly from the server. Also, it would be better if
we use Phonegap and jQuery UI for developing the app since it would be
cumbersome to include web data in Native android app. Please contact
me for further details. Also, I am applying to GSOC for the first
time, so kindly mail me if I am missing anything. I am really
interested to work on this project. If needed I will contact you on
IRC.
EDIT: I discussed with Manu regarding Phonegap and jQuery UI. Phonegap
is good option but webView can also be used as other Android apps like
Quora and Facebook use them very nicely. Both will be able to interact
with Native android sdk. I will research more about them.
Thank you.

hi,
my name is Shivam Bhalla and i am a second year student of computer
science. i am very passionate about mobile app development for android
and am interested in participating in gsoc 2013 with opensuse as my
organisation of preference.
i am interested in working on the opensuse news app on android.
some of the ideas that i propose for this app are
1. an rss feed where the user can swipe using view pager between
various news such as recent topics , top rated topics etc
2. the topics will be presented in an interactive list with users
being able to expand every item to a full view on touching
3. on opening a particular item, i intend to integrate the app with
facebook like and share as well as tweet functionality among others.
this can be presented in two ways-:
a. using a sliding drawer at the
bottom for sharing across various platforms
b. using contextual action bar
switching on long press with options to share.(using actionbar
sherlock library)
4. i also plan to include an elaborate login and settings view by
which, the user can create an account and also, using settings, decide
how often the feed is to be updated etc.
5. another feature which this app could have is opensuse info, by
which, newbies to the opensuse world and students can know about
various suites available on the OS and how it is analogous to
something that they have used before.
6. other UI features which i could possibly include are daydreams
screensaver for posts display in sleep mode, or homescreen/lockscreen
widgets etc.
s
please let me know your opinion on these ideas as well as any
suggestions that you may have regarding them.
many thanks
Shivam Bhalla

I am not sure if I understand you right. The idea here is to implement a system which gives the users in obs, the flexibility to discuss about the ongoing matters. Maybe a little centralised depending on how the architectures persists. Pastebin is something entirely different from this. --

Seems to be a good idea. But why are you coding a new app. Why cannot
you support a
SUSE News/Planet on browser and write a app to open this with
customization which are
what the app supports.

Hello All,
I am Shayon Mukherjee. I am an openSUSE member and have been contributing to openSUSE on and off mostly. I started with openSUSE when I was 16 and have been a FOSS and an opeSUSE boy for a long time now. Whether its school, college or a bar I try to spread the word as much as I can. And if I can, I try to contribute some code to openSUSE as well. My recent contributions to openSUSE has been towards the openSUSE summit and conference websites (although they are much better now from what i started :). Feel free to look up the openSUSE github repos.
Moving on to GSoC 2013. I am really interested in contributing and hacking on the openSUSE's GSOC 2013 Idea - Discussion System for the Open Build Service. I share the same belief as my mentors, that having a commenting or a feedback system implemented to the roots of OBS will very much help with people working with OBS.
Now a little about me-
Age - 20
School - California State University
Majors - B.S Computer Science
Year - Junior (3rd year)
Languages and Frameworks I work with but are not limited to - Ruby, Ruby on Rails, MySQL, PostgreSQL ,SQLite, Jquery, JS, Git, HTLM5 and CSS3. Also, I hold the ability and passion to learn new things.
Since one of the major requirements of the GSoC idea is Ruby on Rails, thats what I will talk about now. I have been coding for a long time and have moved to Ruby and Ruby on rails recently. I have created custom content management systems from scratch with Rails, have had experience developing real time apps with rails, plus I have helped couple of startups built their MVP with rails as well. One of my recent projects on rails is http://tagport.herokuapp.com. Feel free to check it out, it helps user monitor hashtags from twitter and Instagram under one hood. On a side note, I have had experience working with MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite along side the apps I mentioned as well.
As for my work experience goes, I have worked as a student technology assistant at the Learning Technology Center of University of Wisconsin Green Bay (October 2010 - December 2012). I have also interned as a Web Application Developer at the Richard Mauthe Centre, USA.
That is all for my introduction if the mentors or anyone else have any questions or queries please feel free to get in touch with me.
P.S This is just an introduction. Proposal, comes a little later ;).
Cheers!
