[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. I am seeing this with an openSUSE 12.1 system at home, and also a Factory system at work: % host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 And then, when running zypper patch or zypper up, I see Retrieving: repomd.xml [error] Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable Alas, my provider nor that network at work support IPv6. Still, my system has IPv6 enabled since roaming around on different networks, IPv6 may be present, or even necessary there. (This does not happen all the time, sometimes if I retry a bit later the system uses IPv4 and everything works.) Now, is this just a setup problem and I should simply and unconditionally disable IPv6? Or are some parts of our update or network stack in need of some adjustments? For the time being, unless this is just me running into this, should we disable IPv6 on download.opensuse.org? As of 23:00 UTC on 16 December, 2012, the openSUSE Project’s members completed the Fifth election of the openSUSE Board. At stake were two seats of the five electable seats. With 8 candidates, the community definitely had a broad choice of qualified candidates to choose from. In the end, the two top vote-getters were Raymond Wooninck (tittiacoke) and Robert Schweikert, (robjo) respectively. They will join the openSUSE Board on January 9th during the transitional meeting of the regularly scheduled Project meeting heldon the Freenode IRC Channel at 17:00 UTC. The Election Officials would like to congratulate all of thecandidates for a great campaign season. These candidates included Matt Barringer, Richard Brown, Carl Fletcher, Manu Gupta, Chuck Payne and Stefan Seyfried. All of these candidates demonstrated a commitment to the Project and exemplified the Guiding Principles which the Project, as a whole, is founded upon. All, The netiquette was updated in the last couple days to explicitely say cross-posting is wrong: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_list_netiquette#Cross_posting I very much disagree for the majority of the opensuse specialized lists. In particular I note there is currently a cross-posted discussion going on here with both -artwork and -project in the to: line. I think this is as it should be. I propose the netiquette be updated to say: ======= Cross posting That is when the same message is sent to two or more mail lists at once, like when we CC two or more people in a private message. Problem is if people reply and are not able to post to both lists. Then one of the replies is rejected and the conversation becomes disjointed. ie. Conversation becomes broken as the reader[s] can see only messages that are posted to their list, often stumbling on answers without previous questions. This is imposing a lot of additional work to follow conversation, like looking another list, or mail list archives, and try to locate missing messages. The opensuse lists come in 2 flavors: Closed lists that only allow subscriber postings and open lists which allow non-subscriber postings. The high volume end-user distro support lists are all closed. The lower volume specialized lists are typically open. Thus if you post to a end-user list like "opensuse(a)opensuse.org" do not cross-post to any other list. If you are posting to the more specialized open list, cross-posting is fine, but when replying to cross-posted messages, please continue to reply to both of the cross-posted lists. === FYI: The LKML (linux kernel mailing lists) familiy of mailing lists has been open for years and the cross-posting has been the norm there for years. This is a solution. FYI2: I first proposed on opensuse(a)opensuse.org converting it to an open list and allowing cross-posting, but got little buy-in. That's why I carved out the main user support lists from the rest. Hi all, Here is a report of what the openSUSE Board discussed in October and November 2012. Note: action items that have been completed are not mentioned here; some action items can belong to non-board members. We intend to have such reports on a regular basis. On a personal level, I'd like to encourage teams to write short reports too, to keep everyone aware of what's going on. Feedback on the content (as well as the form) is welcome :-) Cheers, Vincent ================================================================== Events ====== + openSUSE Conference 2013 One team applied to organize the Conference in 2013. After some discussion with the team, and an evaluation of other options that could be considered, it was agreed that the Conference would be organized in Greece in July 2013. + openSUSE Summit 2013 SUSE proposed to host an openSUSE Summit in Florida after SUSEcon, in November 2013. In concrete terms, SUSE would sponsor the venue and part of the organization, while the community would handle the content and some local organization. To make an informed decision, feedback on the idea has been requested from the community. + openSUSE Conference 2014 In the hope that we can have two events a year, and assuming that we would have a venue for the Summit sponsored by SUSE around November every year, the board believes it would be beneficial to have the Conference in spring. To enable this in 2014, we need to publish a call for hosting bids shortly after the openSUSE Conference 2013 announcement. AI: all to decide about openSUSE Summit 2013 AI: all to prepare a call for bids for the openSUSE Conference 2014 Hackathons ========== A long-time idea of organizing more hackfests/sprints/etc. was pushed with a proposal from SUSE to host three hackathons before openSUSE 12.3. The board supported the proposal. One goal is to learn from this experience so that the community can organize more hackathons all year long. Andrew agreed to monitor and help the coordination of the first hackathons for the board. Changes to Ambassadors Program ============================== Kostas sent a proposal about changes to the ambassador program (as proposed in his talk at the conference). On a general note, the board supports the changes. There were some comments / suggestions for changes from a non-board reviewer, that could be added to clarify a few things (such as the relation with our existing governance structure, ie the board). AI: Kostas to review latest comments, and then start implementing the changes. Legal entity for openSUSE ========================= An internal discussion about whether we need a legal entity or not resumed again, and what form it should take. Two of the goals would obviously be to be able to have direct access to some funds, and to receive donations. Two main approaches were being discussed: - creation of a Foundation - joining a non-profit organization like the Software Freedom Conservancy The two approaches are currently under evaluation (which includes discussing with the Software Freedom Conservancy). The goal is to have as much information as possible so that the board with newly-elected members can move fast next year. AI: Vincent to discuss further with Software Freedom Conservancy AI: Henne to fetch old documents about establishing a Foundation Organization of openSUSE Board elections ======================================== The board worked on setting up an election committee that will organize the elections. Izabel Valverde, Bryen Yunashko and Thomas Schmidt agreed to step up. Misc ==== There was short discussion on having openSUSE as an organization in Ohloh, with general agreement that it should be done. All, Only 2 days left and looking at the platforms / backgrounds I must say it's a fantastic selection of candidates. I'm not sure we could go wrong with any of them. My only wish is that we had a runoff option of some kind with this many great candidates, I bet no one gets even 40%. If I'm right and the votes are almost evenly split across numerous candidates , I suggest the rules be updated for future elections to have a quick runoff mechanism. Ideas of how to do that can wait until this election is over. libcdio 0.90 has been released. Right now we have a GIT snapshot because of a legal problem that the .changes file summarizes as: - libcdio-paranoia separated from libcdio due to license issues see bnc#756564 I want to read the bug report to know how to do a proper update. But I can't access to it. Now that I have shown that making legal related bugs private causes problems, there is any good reason to do that? [opensuse-project] Call for volunteers - Program Committee

Hi, As you may be aware (hopefully) oSC13 planning and organization is on the way and we have little time to pull everything together. The conference will take place in Greece in July. While there are numerous tasks that can only be accomplished by local volunteers there are also a plethora of tasks that can be accomplished from afar. One such task is to create a schedule, decide on tracks etc. For this we need volunteers to form the Program Committee. Being part of the committee is independent of attendance, i.e. you may not be able to attend but you can still help make oSC13 a great event. We need at least one person that has experience with Indico or a similar tool that we can use to accept papers. The team needs 5 to 8 people. So far we have the following members on the committee: Stella (differentreality) will lead the team and coordinate with the rest of the oSC13 organization team, Henne, Luiz, Alberto, and myself. Therefore it would be great if we can find 2 or 3 more people willing to help with the progam for oSC13. Everyone signing up is expected to participate in a few meetings to discuss what tracks we should have, timing of call for papers etc. Also everyone on the committee is expected to read all the submitted abstracts. A rough list of tasks we have collected so far can be found here: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference_todo_list#Program (Note that other oSC13 tasks are being tracked in Trello and the program comittee might also move to Trello if we end up with many more tasks than anticipated) So feel free to jump right in, and respond to this e-mail or send me an e-mail directly if you are interested in helping with the program for oSC13. Hey everyone, The 11th annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE 11x), is just around the corner. I have already been in contact with the fine people at SCaLE and secured our booth. They will be getting us our Exhibitor=92s Kit soon enough. I would like to put some feelers out in the community for interested community members that would like to help work the booth. I have informally spoken to a few local people who have expressed a desire to help, but I would like to formalize those discussions by bringing them on-list. Also, I know there has been some ideas tossed about... Ideas like, getting a custom "openSUSE Project" banner, and having some videos looping showing off the different desktops running on 12.2. If we are serious about doing ideas like these, we need to start planning and, more importantly, acting in preparation for SCaLE. SCaLE is going to be on February 22-24, 2013 at the Hilton Los Angeles International Airport Hotel. I am looking forward to working the booth again... I hope we get some new faces working the booth this year too. [opensuse-project] E17 goes to openSUSE

Hi lizards fellows, after years of development of E17, after years of E17 built for openSUSE externally I'm glad I can say that E17 release is getting near and it's way to openSUSE is getting to an end. Release is scheduled to December 21th 2012 and all packages needed for the E are already accepted or waiting in the openSUSE submit queue for review. E17 is not the ultimate goal, but first step in accepting this live part of opensource world ecosystem. You can find our future steps in Todo list on wiki (see URL bellow). To coordinate further efforts we formed group and provide (in this time) needed social media access too. You can there find basic information and information about progress. I think this was a missed opportunity for SUSE to 'show-off' how important openSUSE is to them, and for the non-SUSE openSUSE community to make contacts and build bridges with the wider 'SUSE-ecosystem' This left Summit as a small but enjoyable 'mini-oSC', a little easier for our North American community members to attend, but primarily attended by regular Geekos, many of whom also attend other FOSS and openSUSE events As enjoyable as it was, I don't see what summit brought to the table that those other events don't already. Even with a bigger gap between the two events, I'm nervous about there being a dilution effect if Summit and Conference have similar goals. I think conference should be our primary community event, focused on the community and it's needs, stuffed with the best talks, possibly in the model of oSC 11 (ie. Shove a few hundred Geekos in a building and let the magic happen) I think Summit's great potential is to be our 'window to the business world' event. SUSEcon to me seems to be SUSE's big corporate, partners & marketing shindig, with SUSE screaming 'look at us, we're big, we're awesome', filling up customers and attendees brains with as much information as possible about the SUSE world. I think openSUSE needs to be an integral part of that. We're an important part of what SUSE do, arguably more so than any other partner, so at the very least, even if Summit continues as a separate event, I'd like to see an openSUSE booth, ideally staffed with both SUSE and non-SUSE contributors to openSUSE. I also think, instead of a separate summit event, I'd like to see an openSUSE track at SUSEcon with sessions focusing on the bleeding edge (ie. stuff not yet in SLE) and gaining new contributors (how your business can use OBS, how to submit patches, etc). The logic being to grab the interest of SUSEcon's audience and could hopefully lead to some of them getting involved with openSUSE That said, I realise my proposal has one major flaw - As a corporate event SUSEcons price tag of $999 puts it well out of reach of most openSUSE community members who may want attend just for the openSUSE track. That's something we'd need to think about, but I don't think its insurmountable, or worst case, it just means we have to do a better job of encouraging their attendance to oSC and making it as internationally accessible as we can.
