[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Entomologist UI Changes - Weekly Report #10

Hi everyone, You can find the report at either [0] or down below as always. ---- REPORT TEXT BELOW ----- This week isn't as feature packed as previous weeks as I've been trying to figure out where to go from the initial iteration of the ToDo Lists. I've added a blueprint at[ 1] which details what I plan to do in the coming weeks. I hope it doesn't end up taking me the remainder of the GSoC time as I would like to start looking at QML integration but I think it's a killer feature for Entomologist to have so if it does then that's not a loss to me as I would really like to have it implemented. I've been working on adding iCalendar Export to the ToDo Lists and this revealed a few issues with the design choices as iCalendar requires details such as e-mail addresses and recipients to be included in the VTODO format. This is why I had to outline the steps needed to get fully functional calendar export to work and I think a lot of new UI changes need to be brought in to supplement that and to enhance the configurability of the ToDo Lists. Initial testing of the iCalendar exporting appeared to work in iCal as it added the Reminder but it would not sync with any of my cloud calendars that I have included. I think that this is probably iCal itself not supporting the sync of ToDo Lists (or Reminders in iCal parlance) rather than an issue with the format used. I've also used iCalendar validators to check it and it seems that the .ics files produced are well formed which, in all honesty, is the only thing I can really do. Adding little hacks for different services is not the way I want this project to go as it would a) increase the amount of code b) increase the complexity and c) it would break if something changed in each individual service. I think the best way to move forward is to take inspiration from the way that Trackers are organised out and build objects that inherit from a base WebDAV/CalDAV client and add the functionality required for API compatibility with various services. This would mean that we support generic WebDAV servers that a user specifies and that we catch a lot of the various services that exist without wasting lots of code trying to figure it out. The primary services I want to target for this feature are: Remember the Milk Google Calendar Generic WebDAV/CalDAV External clients - Evolution/Thunderbird/iCal/Outlook. I think Outlook might be a problem as a target as I'm not 100% sure it supports the iCalendar format correctly. If it does then great, but I don't have a way to actually test it as I don't own Microsoft Office on either a Mac or a Windows PC and I'm not going to pay for it as I would never use it outside of the testing it would need. I'm also not sure what calendar applications are popular on Windows but I'm assuming that Thunderbird/Google Calendar based things are pretty common so I think it's safe to target those. So it's the 10th week and I've got a lot more work to do but it should all be really interesting stuff to add and will be well worth the time it takes :). I am placing a copy of the post here for reference. ----------------------------- Last week has been quite dull after the mid term evaluations. The week started off with me trying to improve the documentation and a home page for it. While the latter went pretty smooth, the documentation is quite baffling. Most of the source code was quite well documented and small hacks with the Doxyfile seemed to produce the proper results. Nevertheless, there were cases (quite a few) where the results seemed out of place. While struggling with the docs, I also started working on the libyui-gtk-pkg package. This package provides the libzypp plugin for the libyui-gtk module. This has been separated from libyui-gtk package so as to make it platform independent. I am nearly there on getting this package to compile. A day or two should be sufficient, I guess. By the end of last week, I switched over to writing examples for YUI in the hope that it would give me further insight into what a developer might expect from the docs. After a few not-so-great ideas, I settled on an IRC client written with YUI. The library to manage the IRC protocol is self-implemented and is complete. At this point in time, it handles only conversations and a single channel. This is very small compared to the span of the IRC protocol. Hello peers! I just wanted to know, if there exist any interest of making openSUSE 11.1 remastered to an official derivate and add it to the derivate-page on the download section. See 11.1 remastered: http://susegallery.com/a/3wzSxT/opensuse-111-remastered--2?#appliance-downl… short description: openSUSE 11.1 remastered is a recent 11.1 image, kept up-to-date via the Evergreen-repos. It´s usefull when you want a LTS-version of openSUSE and need to install it. Hey, as you probably already have heard the openSUSE conference team is starting the travel sponsorship program to financially support community members to attend the conference. If the only thing that keeps you from attending and contributing to the conference is that you can’t afford all of the travel costs then you should apply. As always, we value contributions the most! So obviously we prefer speakers (you still have until midnight July 25th to submit something!), people who help with the organization and openSUSE Members. Also our Google Summer of Code students/mentors and Ambassadors from very far away are high on our list. However, depending on funds and contributions, we will try to accommodate as many people as possible! To apply for support, you need to make an estimation of your travel costs. Search for a cheap airfare or train trip, look for hotels and make a rough estimation of your costs. Then send that estimation to us via travel-support(a)opensuse.org until August 5th! We’ll contact you about our options for your sponsoring. Please note that we won’t be able to pay everything for everybody all the time. The sponsorship program has limited resources and we want to make the most of it. Let us be blunt: Request only what you really can’t afford yourself and use this program as a last resort! Hi everyone, You can find my report at [0] and in the text below. This week hasn't been as busy as normal but hopefully I can start next week with more energy. ---- Report Text ----- This week I’ve been working on finishing up the ToDo Lists, which did entail writing a new Item Delegate for the list as the previous method of checking which widget had been clicked was less than optimal!. I have finished the ToDo List and it will hopefully be merged on Monday into an experimental branch that I can go through and ensure that everything works as expected. This will then all be pulled together as a possible version 1.0 of Entomologist, which is great news!. I am currently researching possibilities for integrating Cloud Services into the ToDo List and I plan on targeting an iCal/WebDAV compatible format export to begin with. Once this basic step is in place I can then look at integrating with various web services and generic iCal/WebDAV support for servers that use these. This all leads on to how long I have left of my GSoC, which by my count is 5 weeks(!) of GSoC Time,but I would like to stick to the soft pencils down date as much as possible so the final week can be spent ensuring everything works properly. I want to look at the addition of QML after I’ve integrated some Cloud Sync aspects as I think this would be a really excellent feature to have. As you all know, we will be having the openSUSE Conference in Nuremberg 11-14, September 2011. We are seeing some great submissions, actually a lot of great submissions and we're so very excited to be going through these submissions with a plan to announce the final program in early August. With the deadline for the CFP coming this weekend, I'd like to take a moment to encourage the various teams in openSUSE Project to consider submitting proposals for BoFs for your teams at the conference. While we will strive to maintain a flexible schedule for on-the-spot BoFs at the conference, we do encourage you to consider submitting a proposal for a BoF for your team early on in order to ensure a better chance at reserving space for your team. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Entomologist UI Changes - Weekly Report #8 (A bit late!)

Hi everyone, The weekly report is much later this week as I'd been focused on getting the Mid Term report completed. The ToDo List is finally nearing completion (well it's finished but I want to tweak it a lot more). You can as always find the report at [0] and the text is below. I recommend reading the blog post as it has screenshots showing off the ToDo List :). ---- Report Text ---- In addition to the Midterm report that I've previously posted I'd like to update everyone on what I've been getting up to since. The ToDo Lists feature has all of the basic functionality I wanted it to have, which includes setting individual dates for bugs and setting the completion state. I've also spent time going through my code and cleaning up so I can move on and work on merging this work with the New Comments Dialog work and hopefully getting that work merged into master. Once all of that is completed I will move on to working on the Cloud Sync features and researching QML. The ToDo List represents the last real planned addition to Entomologist but it doesn't mean I'm going to slow down or stop doing work now. I want to see the Cloud Sync integrated and I think adding QML support for adding new tracker types would be awesome. The primary concern for me at the minute is testing the current iteration of the ToDo list across all 3 platforms and making sure that any major problems are resolved. Plan for the next week (Which is 3 days now!): Finish the ToDo list and then merge it with the New Comments branch and work out all of the inconsistencies between these two branches. [opensuse-project] oSC conference deadline extended, we want more interactivity!!!

Hi all, Let me start with the important part: =========== We want you to THINK MORE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK for this openSUSE conference. What do YOU want to accomplish? What does YOUR team need to talk about? What features should be finished? What decisions should be made? Use the conference for that! PLEASE SEND IN BoF PROPOSALS for oSC! They take no preparation and barely any work as 'leader' - it's just an informal get-together. Yes, you can do that over dinner too, but - nobody takes notes, lots of beer... A BoF is NOT any more formal than a dinner meet but it does ensure the participants are focussed on the discussion, not the food, and sober ;-) Sending in a BoF proposal ensures you get a room for 40 minutes with no strings attached. And you never know who suddenly shows up and happens to be willing and able to take on some work! Aside from BoF's, we love more workshops and hack sessions. How about a hack session to fix up one or two modules in YaST. Or fix some kernel bugs. Or get a bunch of perl updates packaged. Or, to get more people working on your stuff, a workshop "hacking on YaST". A workshop "porting your app from sysv to systemd"... Register your session here: http://bit.ly/nsycEP ============ About the oSC deadline: Last monday the deadline for the oSC CfP was extended. We had a fair number of submissions already but the "interactive" proportion of sessions wasn't what we hoped. I'm sure that's partially due to lack of clarity about what we want, so let me try to explain a bit here too. We want to get more 'work done' at oSC. And focus more strongly on openSUSE. The last conference had many non-openSUSE people and the results were great - but for openSUSE it wasn't what it could've been. Now many of us get together only once a year at the conf and we could do more than listen to talks, have dinner and drink beer. That's why we want more BoF sessions (essentially team meetings), workshops (eg teach to package better, or test, or ...) and hack sessions (get together and do work). Each of these sessions we'll try to explain more. The BoF was explained a few weeks ago [1] and today the workshop will get some attention [2]. Hi all, The following is the mid-term report for the SSC (Suse Studio Comandline Client) Project Tasks completed; * Framework for the command line client including argument parser and handlers for the various accessible "objects"(repos, packages, files, templates) in Suse Studio. * Directory management utilities: The app requires the creation and management of an appliance directory for local caching of changes until ready to be pushed to Studio. * Test suite for those actions that are independent of the web API Tasks to be completed: * The update, status and commit commands: These would be the commands that make use of the locally cached information from the appliance directory. This is the last remaining feature in the app. * Integration tests: Tests that include requests to the web API. Without tests of this nature it is not possible to affectively test large portions of the app. * Documentation: code level and sample use cases. Hi, here's a small summary of the 8th (coding) week. This week I spent most of my time with rewriting the working copy code. Done: - added support to add and delete packages - added some "abstractions" for the tracking file format: currently packages and files are tracked in a xml file - thought about the package update algorithm. Basically it'll work like this (simplified version): - perform update in a tmpdir (phase 1) - if the tmp update finished, copy/rename all files to the wc (phase 2) Advantage: If the update is interrupted in phase 1 the wc wasn't touched at all and nothing should be broken. If the update is interrupted in phase 2 the wc is _inconsistent_ but a subsequent "update" call can resume the update and everything should be consistent again (in this case only files are copied/renamed (no remote access is needed)) TODO: - implement update + commit algorithm If everything works as expected most parts of working copy code cleanup should be finished after this week. [opensuse-project] Suse Bug Reporter - GSoC midterm report

Hello everyone, The expected/requested functionalities for the project are done. I'm talking about the CLI version of the tool. Its main functionalities are splitted in four categories at the moment: * aid - helps the user to determine which is the „suspected” package that causes a problem * gather - scans the system for relevant data to provide in a bug report or to someone that helps, via IRC let's say * query - search the Bugzilla instance for bug reports that fit given keywords and sorts them by relevance * submit - gets input from the user and submits the bug report to Bugzilla Underlying nice stuff: * duplicate search - this feature was very wanted from what I could tell. I managed to implement it using a sorting by relevance of bug reports. From what I could see in the tests I've done, it works great. Also, it supports "excluded words" functionality. * get assignee + maintainers - I use data from the rpm and then get the relevant information via OBS, using it's python bindings, not the shell tool * check account - verifies that the user has a valid account and if so, it stores the user's credentials in a hidden file, base64 encrypted and pickled to make them not human readable; if the data is stored, the user isn't prompted again for username & password when interacting with bugzilla * globbing : when searching for a package, you can also do something like search for ' kde* ' and it will show you what packages match * searching local rpm database: it also looks in 'provides', not only in 'name' There are also some other things that I've implemented by necessity, but I think the ones listed above are the ones that deserve to be mentioned in this report. Some sample usage for submitting is here [0]. You can find the repo here: [1] There is more to the tool that I can think of right now, so if you got any questions, fire away! I intend to do also a GUI version but I don't know what to use. Maybe if libYUI comes along nicely I could use it. What do you think? [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Entomologist UI Changes - Midterm Report

Hi everyone, You can find my midterm report at [0] and the text below. I really recommend reading the blog post as it has screenshots of everything :). ----Report Text ---- This report is a summary of all the work that I've completed so far for my Summer of Code and what is to come :). Porting Entomologist to Windows and Mac OS X: Entomologist works mostly flawlessly on Mac OS X. Windows was an awkward platform to port for and it still doesn't function as well as it could but once we hit version 1.0 a lot of the problems can be addressed. Tabbed Interface for selecting Trackers: This took a few weeks to complete as it was awkward to get everything to work correctly, I also had the learning curve/understanding new code slowing me down whilst doing it. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it looks and how it works. New Comments Dialog: Next on the list was creating a New Comments Dialog. The goal was to make it easier to select a bug and see the comments and add new comments for that specific bug. The dialog works by either highlighting a bug in the table and hitting Ctrl + Shift + N(Cmd + Shift + N on a Mac) or by clicking the new comments button in the expanded comments dialog. If no bug is highlighted it defaults to opening the first bug in the list. ToDo Lists: This is probably the most helpful feature I've worked on throughout the project. It has been a bit of a learning curve and I think I'm starting to 'Get' QT and I can definitely see why QT is usually classed as better than GTK. This feature still isn't finished but it is nearly all there and I'm currently working on the mechanism to add new ToDoLists. Once that's completed the first basic iteration will be there and it should be useful in that state. Post Midterm Plans: Post midterm I want to add cloud sync to the ToDoLists so you can sync the items to whichever tra cker you feel is appropriate. This should help in organising data and recording milestones through bugs :). I think I'll start by having it export to calendar formats that can be read by normal desktop viewers and they can handle the sync. But the plan is to add that service integration to entomologist itself. After that work is completed I will look at how we can integrate QML into Entomologist so the trackers that it supports can be extended by using QML. This would take a lot of work away from Matt as he won't have to add new trackers, the users that want them can use QML to define them and they can submit them as an extension :). I think this is the best way to manage most bug trackers as there are a lot of different ones out there. So that's it for the work completed so far. Hopefully at the end we'll reach version 1.0 of Entomologist and move on with adding shiny new things :). What do you think? Speaking of attach - python-bugzilla hasn't got the attach functionality implemented. I'm not sure I know how to implement it myself. Please let me know, I'm new to this kind of programming. :) One more thing - regarding what files / logs to attach when reporting against certain packages (i.e. Yast log for reporting against yast), I'm thinking of implementing some sort of application hooks (as Ubuntu's Apport calls it). That means a file for each app with a string that represents what to attach. Over this, I'd write a function that scans the folder for such files and checks if the package name in the report matches one of the respective files. If so, it attaches the corresponding log. If you can think of a better infrastructure for this, please let me know! Hello to all, This e-mail is a brief summary of the progress in the project till this moment as part of the midterm evaluation. [opensuse-project] GsoC Midterm Consolidated Report - Separating libYUI

Hi, I would like to summarize my progress so far. I am working on the libyui project as mentioned above. WORK DONE -------------------- 1. libyui and all three UI plugins (Qt, ncurses and GTK) have been ported to target systems (Fedora and Ubuntu). 2. The git repository at gitorious.org/libyui/libyui has been removed. The master branches of libyui and the plugins have been ported to gitorious from the YaST svn and can be found at : gitorious.org/libyui/libyui-master.git gitorious.org/libyui/ncurses-master.git gitorious.org/libyui/gtk-master.git gitorious.org/libyui/qt-master.git 3. Builds now make use of OBS. The download repository can be found at : http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/nbprashanth/ . Currently build targets are Ubuntu (10.10 & 11.04), Fedora (14 & 15) and Debian 6. 4. GTK plugin no longer has libzypp as a dependency and can hence be ported. 5. Due to CMake issues on Ubuntu 11.04 with the GTK CMake module (Bug report : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cmake/+bug/751940 ), builds using CMake have failed. Moreover, the default install location for gdk-pixbuf on F14 and F15 are different which caused the GTK plugin build to fail on F14 as well. 6. I have converted the GTK plugin to use autotools as opposed to CMake. This has made it compile successfully in Ubuntu 11.04 and Fedora 14. 7. Documentation for libyui is now online and can be found at :http://doc.opensuse.org/projects/libyui/HEAD/ . This is an initial version and improvements may be expected in near future. The absolute path issue is now fixed. 8. Examples, update for YUI and full GsoC reports are also updated on my blog which can be found at : http://nbprashanth.wordpress.com/ . My GsoC reports can be found on the blog as well as the yast ML. 9. Patches for minor bugs such as "long long warnings" have been made. Not integrated upstream yet. 10. A sourceforge page has been created for libyui. It includes a bug tracker, forum and a mailing list. The version control system still continues to be git at gitorious.org/libyui. The sourceforge page can be found at sourceforge.net/projects/libyui/. 11. If anyone happens to test any of the YUI packages at OBS and finds a bug, please file a bug report at sourceforge. 12. The documentation lacks a main page/introduction. This has been fixed and will be updated in the upcoming week. WORK LEFT ------------------- 1. Documentation needs to be refined and improved. 2. libyui lacks a webpage at sourceforge. This webpage should give basic information as well as a few tutorials on libyui. Screenshots and links to external resources would also be found there. 3. A few small examples using libyui need to be put up. 4. Hi, here's a small summary of the 6th (coding) week. Unfortunately I had to spent more time with university stuff than I expected - that's why I didn't finish the complete todo for this week. I did some code restructuring and started to work on the class for the source route. TODO: - rewrite the project and package working copy classes: * the new working copy format will be incompatible with the current format. * the basic layout will look like this: prj | ---> .osc/ (stores prj _and_ pkg metadata) | ---> pkg1 | ---> <files> ... | ---> pkgN | ---> <files> So all metadata is stored in the prj/.osc dir instead of prj/pkg/.osc The advantage is that we can support a complete package "restore" (without the need to download the package again): cd prj; rm -r pkg; osc revert/restore pkg; (that's possible because the metadata is stored in the prj/.osc dir). * to convert old project/package working copies to the new format the "osc repairwc" command can be used (at least that's the plan) Feedback is always welcome. I got a little behind in this thread, and will try to catch up now. There is no intent to "fool" the users. If I did not think that MS6 were fully qualified to be called a "beta", then I would not have proposed this. In fact, if it is not, then openSUSE is doomed. A reputation for releasing buggy code is impossible to shake. The scheme proposed by M. Raiko is not that different from what happens in the kernel. Anything not available by the end of the merge period has to wait for the next cycle. If openSUSE used that scheme and froze features/versions after MS2, a lot fewer bugs would make it to GM. I'm not sure that I want to go that far as we would be shipping some really old stuff. Perhaps the rolling releases of Tumbleweed will help debug many of the updates that will be in our next release. There isn't a huge amount to write about this week so the report is fairly short. -- Report Text Below -- This week I've been focused on adding TODO list functionality to Entomologist. I haven't quite finished the implementation but it is nearing basic completion. Once I've finished the UI/core functionality I will then work on adding cloud connection features so that the lists can be synced with various calendar services/WebDAV servers. This is a request for changing the name of the MS6 release to Beta. The Testing Core Team (TCT) discussed the general problem of testing of new releases. With openQA, the probability that Factory iso's will boot and install is greatly increased; however, with the current system, many users do not start testing until RC1 is ready. As a result, there is very little time for detecting and fixing the bugs that will only be seen with a workload that is diverse. Such early testing will be particularly important for 12.1. Not only have we regularized the release schedule and naming scheme and need to follow through with a high-quality product, but we are behind due to the early build problems. The TCT considered several possible changes to entice earlier and broader testing. The schedule does not have much flexibility to increase the time between the RC1 and GM releases, thus we probably need to indulge in some 'social engineering' to get earlier testing. We could change from 6 Milestone and 2 RC releases to 5 and 3, respectively, without tampering with the total time. Alternatively, we could rename from MS6 to Beta. The TCT favors the latter option. It might mislead the users/testers a little regarding the quality of the offering, but we don't think calling MS6 "Beta" is misleading. By most definitions, Beta means feature-complete and free of huge bugs - we should be able to get that with MS6. A beta release should attract more users. In addition, many of us start full-time usage with MS5 or MS6, thus we know it to be usable for many people. I'm not sure how the measure the success of this change. The only things that count are the number and severity of the bugs in the final release. I certainly want to avoid another case like 11.3 GM where all networking was broken by two different critical bugs. I am not trained in psychology, and I'm not sure what will attract testing; however, I certainly think that the publicity surrounding the release of the "one-and-only" Beta version will have more news impact than the "sixth-of-six" Milestones will; however, it is clear that we need to hit other news outlets than those within the traditional openSUSE family. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Entomologist UI Changes - Weekly Report #6

Hi Everyone, You can find my weekly report at [0] as usual or it is included in plain text below. This week is the start of a new phase in my project and represents the final completion of the "tabbed interface" changes I had included in my plan. I'm happy that I'm making progress :). --------Weekly Report Text------ This week has been a bit productive but there still isn't that much to show for the work I have done as it's primarily related to drag and drop in the TODO list. The start of the week was spent bolstering the code I had worked on for the tabbed interface and ensuring that I caught as many bugs as I could find. The later part of the week has been focused on the TODO list. The idea behind the TODO list is a way to categorize bugs with your own scheme and then assign them to certain completion dates. This could then be used to track roadmaps etc and over time I plan to add cloud integration so that they can be synced with Google Calendar etc. The main focus right now is getting it to work within the context of entomologist and once that is done focus on the cloud integration aspect. So far the drag and drop doesn't work but it's getting there and once it is complete I will tidy the code and the TODO list as a first iteration should be finished (since drag and drop being completed is the same as finishing most of the functionality). What am I going to do next week?: - Finish the first iteration. - Move forwards with the second iteration and implement prefpanes for each list (with options like name,date etc.) - Start Cloud integration (If there's time left at the end of the week!). I need to take some time to try and document what I've done too which would involve making comments I've written better and maybe putting together a small "Hackers Guide to Entomologist". If I have time left over I will definitely do this work before the end of the Summer.
