Hey,
I am a third year undergrad at MIT, Manipal, India doing CSE and I
want to discuss the "Karma plugin for OpenSUSE Connect idea" [1]
The idea is to award Karma points for contribution to OpenSUSE. The
karma points will be given through wiki edits, bugzilla entries,
planet.opensuse.org posts, distribution changelogs and possibly other
sources. Also, we would implement a feature so as to send karma points
to another user in order to recognize his work. Also, we would
integrate this in the API so that the karma points can be fetched
easily.
>From Michal's blog post[3] :
So basic idea of this project is to create different kinds of karma
and collect as many information as possible automatically. So we will
have wiki karma that will grow with every wiki page edit. We will have
marketing karma growing bigger with every tweet and blog post.
Packager karma getting bigger with every change submitted to the
openSUSE. So this project will be not only about displaying and
managing karma points but also about collecting statistics from
various different services.
As we know that the Connect is based on Elgg, so we need to develop a
plugin for Elgg which supports all these features.
Michal Hrušecký would be mentoring this idea. Have a look at his blog
posts : [2] and [3]
I will be shortly sending my proposal here and would love to get
feedback. What do you guys think of the idea ?

Hi,
I'm Varun Thacker , a Computer Science student from Manipal Institute
of Technology , India. I was going through the openSUSE GSOC 2011
ideas page and found the OBS for Android App interesting.
OBS is a great tool and i love working on mobile applications . A
android specific improvement would be to optimize it for tablets.
I installed the OBS app on my Android phone and found one bug- I
noticed that when you click on the login button(I changed orientation
to type in landscape mode )- a white screen appeared and I had to
press back to click Login again. I had faced a similar problem and
this did the trick - In the AndroidManifest file in the adding
android:configChanges="orientation|keyboardHidden" did the trick.
I am a active member of our college's Linux Users Group
(http://lugmanipal[DOT]org/) and have actively participated in FOSS
activities in India, attending Pycon India 2009 and FOSS.IN in 2010.
In December 2010 I helped an Indian Institute of Technology , Delhi
professor in coding for his research paper on the Quadratic Assignment
problem. This march I took part in Startup Weekend Bangalore
(http://bangalore.startupweekend[DOT]org/) . By the end of the weekend
this is what our team made - http://www.makemytripfast[DOT]in/ .

Hello,
My name is Christos, i am student from Greece. I am in my final
year of my studies for a BSc in Computer Science.I am thinking of
applying for the GSoc idea "fillup-ng". I have read the description of
the project, the required knowledge and the man pages of fillup and i
think i can make. Even thought i have joined before mailing lists of
open source communities(made some translations for gnome), it is the
first time i will join as a developer (if i am finally accepted as a
gsoc student). I have quite a time now the desire to contribute
something back, and hopefully i will be able to do so even in a very
small part. That is the main reason for applying to for gsoc, i really
want to learn how to work with such a big community of people and be
part of one. Well i will write more in my application just thought it
would be nice to introduce myself on the list too. I have already been
in the irc #opensuse-project my nickname there is mpounta.
P.S. I would really need more information about fillup before i
make my application so any suggestions on useful material i could read
would be very nice.
Best Regards,
Christos Bountalis

The poll on SurveyMonkey on how to version the openSUSE distribution release
is now closed, you can see the results here. The winner is the "old school"
(like currently but only counting the right number until 3), followed by
"Fedora style" (just integers) and "Ubuntu style" (2 digits year "." 2 digits month).
The openSUSE members only poll is now live on connect until April 04, 2011.
Please select your favorite option
URL of the poll is:

Hi Folks,
I heard there is a openSUSE booth at the LinuxTag 2011 in Berlin, but I don't
find a Wikipage. So I made one. :)
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:LinuxTag_Berlin_2011
Please add your name in the list if you want to help or organized the booth
and add details of event.
I would like help out at the booth. The only problem is the expensive
accommodations in berlin. Are there good experiences from recent years?

Hi,
my name is Marcus Hüwe and I'm currently enrolled at the University of
Paderborn where I'm studying computer science. I spend most of my
freetime with hacking on osc and from time to time on other
buildservice components.
My plan for this year's GSoC is to write a new python obs library
which is independent of osc and can be used by other clients as well.
For the details see the attached "python_obs_lib.txt" file.

Hello!
My name is Max Usachev. I'm a graduate degree student of Belorussian
State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics.
I looked at openSUSE projects and find them very interested for me. I
want to take part in 'GTK+ client for smolt' and 'Complete spec-cleaner'
projects.
A little bit about me and my skills:
I already took part in Google Summer of code in 2009. I was working on
porting Mnemosyne [1] to Maemo [2] platform (from PyQT to PyGTK). I
learned a lot about Python programming and UI development using PyGTK. I
have finished the project succesfully and the applicaton in Maemo extras
repository. [3] You can find the code in my Github repository [4].
I have strong knowledges in Python language and standard libraries. Some
skills in developing web-based application using
Djando, WSGI. I have good skills in PyGTK library. I works with Git and
SVN control version systems. I use Linux as main operating system and
have some skills in
administrating it. Main areas in which I programming are: UI developing,
scripts, parsers (XML, HTML and other custom formats, algotihms) and
many others.
I am sure, that my knowledges and ambitions will help me to do this
projects very well.

Student application period is open, so it would be nice, if mentors could see
the applications. Is somebody of the admins accepting mentor requests in
Melange?
By the way, there is a mailing list gsoc-mentors(a)opensuse.org, which was used
to coordinate mentors last time we participated in the summer of code. It
probably would be a good idea to use it again.

Hello,
My name is Paul Chobert, I'm student in an Engineering school in
Strasbourg, France. I am passionate in new technologies and especially
in web technologies.
If you wonder why I'm posting on this mailing list, it's because I
read on GSoC idea list that you are looking for students with good web
programming skills and creativity.
I'm very interested in OBS Android idea because it uses technologies I
love (Ruby on Rails, jQuery Mobile, HTML5), and OBS is a great tool.
I'm also interested in the End user oriented web interface of OBS to
make it more social, and improve contacts between developers and
users.
I have one question about OBS :
Will ODS for end users be a kind of Github for distribute package for
users rather than source code for developers?
Thanks.

All,
I put myself down as a potential mentor for one of the opensuse GSOC ideas.
I had a student reach out to me. What are the first steps I need to do?
note: Per a earlier note, I tried to go to
http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/mentor/request/google/gsoc2011/opensuse
and register myself as a mentor, but that page doesn't seem to exist.
Thanks
Greg
