[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Pavol and I will take the final decision since we are the GSoC admins for openSUSE. [opensuse-project] Can one manually become a "Member Emeritus"

Hi all, after reading https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Members, I understand that I can cancel my membership status with immediate effect and forever. To become a "Member Emeritus", with a "way back" into the community in case things might turn good again, I have to wait for the status request and just not respond to it. But the last such request was almost 3 years ago. IIUC I need to stop all actions on the mailing lists (might be a good idea ;-)) and packaging (not so good) for the bot to pick me up. So is there a manual procedure to follow to become "Member Emeritus"? Hello, It is with despair that I ask that you cancel my membership in openSUSE. The constant bickering on the mailing lists is by far outweighing any constructive growth/change in the project, and in light of everything else going on in the world, I just don't have the headspace for all that negative, unproductive noise. I'm cc'ing the project overall; please let this serve as a lesson that if one thinks they can bicker their way to the end result they want, they may find they arrive there alone. [opensuse-project] Update on Jump and Leap 15.3 and proposed roadmap for the next steps

Hello openSUSE! We have some exciting news to share about the openSUSE Jump effort! **COMMUNITY FEATURE REQUESTS** We will have a https://jira.suse.com partner setup for openSUSE this week! Confirmed by the SUSE Jira team. Access to partner project will allow openSUSE Leap contributors to see updates on community feature requests in JIRA and be able to comment on requested information or request information. Same process as for all SUSE partners. Neal Gompa agreed to be in the initial pilot. Thank you, Neal! We'll enroll more people as soon as we know it works properly. Submit Request redirection and mirroring from Jump (OBS) -> SLE 15 (IBS) is already in place. https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Jump:OBS:SRMirroring This new OBS feature will allow openSUSE Leap contributors to submit code changes "directly" against SUSE Linux Enterprise without having SRs rejected (unless they failed review :). More in the policies section below. [opensuse-project] [CtLG] questioning usage of qemu/SDL2 in openSUSE Leap

Hello team, Virtualization team for SUSE Linux Enterprise is in favor of not brining back SDL2 support for qemu as it was previously dropped in favor of GTK. This means that openSUSE jump will not have qemu-ui-sdl unless we fork and rebuild the package. Are you aware of any usecases, that would justify additional maintenance of qemu-ui-sdl in Leap so we could bring it back to the project? Please let me know by end of the week. Hi all, with the openSUSE (and LibreOffice) Virtual Conference 2020 coming closer I on behalf of the board want to announce this year's annual board discussion. It will take place on October 16th at 21:00h UTC and is intended for one hour duration. [1] During this session we will share an update of the ongoing projects and what we've done since the last openSUSE Conference. This will be followed by the typical Q&A where any stuff community members might want to know can be discussed. To make things a bit more convenient the board is calling for topics anyone of the community is interested in to be collected. So if you want to discuss a particular topic please add it to the wiki.
