Board Elections: Meet the Candidates

Hi all! As the openSUSE Board election is drawing closer, with the ballots opening on December 15 already, we want to invite the openSUSE community to a "meet-and-greet" and QA live session with the candidates. In the past weeks there have been passionate discussions on the election and candidates, and we felt we had to answer the community's interest with a proper setting. In this video call the candidates will introduces themselves, present their openSUSE board election platforms and answer questions. While this might sound a bit formal we really want to keep it very informal and relaxed for everyone. The goal is to give the community a better picture of the candidates so they can decide whom to vote for. ## Time and date Saturday, 2020-12-19 at 13:00 UTC We tried to accommodate as many time zones as possible. We chose Saturday to give people a chance to take part who are working during the weekdays. Please find your local time accordingly here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20201219T1300 ## Location We will gather at this Jitsi room: https://meet.opensuse.org/meet-the-candidates-2020 The session will be recorded for anyone not being able to take part. Furthermore we're trying to make a live stream on Youtube possible as well to cover regions not that well connected to meet-o-o. Please keep that in mind so if you don't want to be recorded it's better to leave your webcam turned off. ## Moderation Adrien Glauser and Vinzenz Vietzke will be moderating the whole event together to make sure no questions get lost unanswered. ## Collecting Questions As mentioned there will be lots of time for questions and discussions. We will try to monitor the chat for questions as they pop up. End of the Year 2020 Survey: Thanks for your patience, we are ironing out the bugs

Dear all, I'd like to apologize for the typos and bugs spoiling the recently released "End of the Year 2020 survey". I alone am responsible for them, as the non-volunteer part of me was busy with urgent things that prevented me from honoring our "cooperative time window" for doing the required proofing. Nathan Wolf's link in Helios might be erroneous

Hello, Just cast my ballot and noticed that Nathan's link pointed to his Connect account (a mostly empty page with only a picture of him) when it should more appropriately point to his https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Board_election_2020_platform_-_Nathan_Wolf. Managing list offtopicness better.

Hi All, The board has noticed an again increasing amount of offtopic discussion on both the Project and Factory mailing lists, including some users having longer then needed conversations drawn out over a significant number of emails per thread. Our new mailing list setup has given us some more options with regards to this. In particular the board has decided that users who regularly take the list off topic from now will be placed under moderation for a period of time. To help facilitate this the board has asked the mailing list admin's to create a mailing list moderation team with enough people to reasonably cover all timezones, once this team is created it should be able to become self sustaining like the forum moderators for example. If you are passionate about this and believe you would be a good candidate feel free to contact the mailing list admins at admin(a)o.o as I believe they are looking for a couple more candidates especially in European timezones. As a reminder the project mailing list is for non technical project wide / community wide discussions. The factory list is strictly for development discussions, with a reminder that we have the support list and forums for user support, the user list for general discussion and an offtopic list for everything else. [opensuse-project] mailing lists: users vs. support

On both Users[1] and Heroes[2] I presented the following: "What exactly is the difference between a "users" list and a "support" list? What subject(s) are common from "users" that don't constitute the subject of either another list, or support? The existence of both where many exist creates confusion. The changeover of list servers should have consolidated the two." After minimal list response, I forwarded same email to the Board. One board member responded that it discussed the matter, and: "Currently the board's opinion is that at first the community should discuss and if they come to a conclusion, the board can take care for the necessary steps if appropriate." This email constitutes an attempt to start such a discussion. In my non-scientific view: 1-There are too many opensuse lists 2-The users list has been acquiring more support posts than the support list. IMO, having both a support list and a users list has served only to create more unneeded division in an environment where mailing lists are seeing dwindling usage overall. Support doesn't seem to have enough helpers that answers to the vast majority of answerable help requests can be expected.
