[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Pavol and I will take the final decision since we are the GSoC admins for openSUSE. Hi, I am myself afraid of this email, because this is about the basis of the community, distributions, plans for foundation etc... Any change in regards to all things outlined here will be controversial and will have huge influence on the future of openSUSE as a whole. Take this very seriously, but also don't take it too seriously because it doesn't change the way community operates, but instead how it ends up being represented. As mentioned in my talk week ago, I would like to change the openSUSE logo to break it off of SUSE branding, however as Richard rightfully pointed out, the suggestion should also mention changing the name of community and distributions, to remove the `SUSE` part of `openSUSE`, on top of a few other issues that are unrelated to foundation talks. [1,2] We do need to tackle this now, considering we are going through vital parts of the talks of the Foundation, and both trademarks are planned to be transferred at some point, but it might be best to start off the foundation with the name and logo that isn't necessarily tied to SUSE brand for easier legal proceedings between SUSE and the project, depending on the community outlook on the ideas. openSUSE logo issues: * older version of SUSE logo, which is similar enough to be confusing, also will require agreement between future openSUSE Foundation and SUSE to use the logo * colour is too bright and light to stand out well on light backgrounds [3] * button variant looks the same as SUSE logo buttons, with the only exception being colour (and SUSE tends to use similar green for buttons they haven't updated in a long time) For current proposals, and to propose more visit: https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/issues/93 openSUSE name issues: * contains `SUSE`, which will require agreement between future openSUSE Foundation and SUSE to use the name (we will need this anyway, because we will support older releases, but at least there would be some exit strategy when everything goes south built into the name of the foundation) * we are endlessly complaining about wrong capitalization (and will for the rest of time), even SUSE has it easier with "only" SuSE, SuSe and Suse [4] * FSF complains about `open`, although that works with openness of the collaboration, more than `free` or `libre` would (not to mention that we do have non-free repos) [5] There has obviously been a lot of suggestions here, from various contributors, stuff like `Viridian Foundation` works quite well for the purposes of the naming, because it references SUSE, while not being directly tied to SUSE name (although it might be too generic and hard to type). More important than the name itself however is to decide if we want to change the logo and/or the name at all, or we want to leave everything as is. If we do decide for a change there we will be able to choose the name and the logo through a vote, I or some other designer will just have to design and fix up logos proposed by the community for the vote (like it was previously done with the YaST mascot/logo, which looked crude before the redesign, but was a great community idea). In particular, I will always remember my first visit to FOSDEM as openSUSE Chair. Let's see how Gerald will dress up now, for his first live appearance as chair :) Really happy and excited that Gerald has accepted the challenge and together with the board, the community and SUSE folks, looking forward to keeping the good collaboration between openSUSE and SUSE and also to bringing improvements as much as we can. [opensuse-project] RFC: How to improve openSUSE websites

Hi there, being relatively new to the openSUSE community over the past few weeks I've been digging through websites and wiki. Quite often I stepped into traps of unclear, misleading or just plain old content. This lead me to the conclusion that there's urgent need of restructuring lots of things. The following is a rough braindump strongly intended as RFC. I try to visualize my thoughts as good as possible with screenshots. # First sight The website opensuse.org in overall is looking good and I really like the coloring. But looking closer there is a lot of clutter which needs to be restructured. Important stuff needs to be visible at first glimpse. See the screenshot taken on a regular FullHD monitor [1] and try to tell what's this all about - imagining you don't know what openSUSE is. Why not tell at first sight: - this is a Linux distribution - this is how it looks like - these three things make it outstanding Positive examples as comparison: Fedora [2], Solus [3] # Getting information To get more details I have to scroll quite a lot and/or click very often in comparison to the amount of information I get in the end. The waste of space is too high and it should be reduced. Also these animations are quite annoying. Especially the bouncing circle when clicking on "How to contribute" > "Code" just to show a few sentences afterwards. # Consolidate information ## News News about ongoing development and information about achievements is one the crucial thing to be spead out widely. The "News" section on opensuse.org is just way too small and is just drowned out by the "Tools" and "Contribute" sections. So we should either remove it there completely and give it a separate page (See Solus Blog [4]). Or move it upwards on opensuse.org and make it way more prominent. At least linking to news.opensuse.org is useless and should be stopped (even more from a design perspective). Currently there are way too many places just to get news. Let me summarize it and - please correct me if I got something wrong: 1. opensuse.org It grabs first 2-3 sentences of a post and links to it on news.o.o. 2. news.opensuse.org This filled by Doug and (just guessing) members of news mailing list. 3. lizards.opensuse.org Looks exactly the same as news.o.o but consists of blog posts by devs and dev teams. The difference to news.o.o is stated nowhere, the reasons for this separation not made clear either. 4. planet.opensuse.org This looks only slightly similar to news.o.o and lizards.o.o, even the content is different. But: why is dimstar's blog (the TW reviews) and the Open Build Service blog listed there? Following the logic above it should at least be in lizards.o.o if not even in news.o.o! ## Website vs. Wiki Looking at the content of opensuse.org and wiki.opensuse.org I think there's no clear plan what to put where. My understand of a wiki is a) collaboratively created content and b) content changing regularly. A source for documentation if you will. The "Contribute" section on opensuse.org gives you just a few sentences but links to a wiki page. This is unnecessary as the ways to contribute won't hardly change very often. I assume this is mostly done due to the fact that opensuse.org has hardly any space left for slightly more detailed information. But that's what a website is made for. Sending people from URL to URL without giving them a consistent layout is at best confusing if not frustrating. Partly positive example: Fedora [5] (sat in comparison to opensuse.org) That's all for now. I understand that many things have somehow grown over the years. But as I'm willing to tackle these I am looking forward to your comments/critics. Regards, vinz. Hi, the spam filter (or rather, lack thereof) on mx1.suse.de and mx2.suse.de which handle mail to opensuse.org addresses has become truly annoying... about 80% of the spam that I get here is hitting my opensuse.org address. And since the junk has already passed through a (poorly configured?) spamassassin, my local spamassassin thinks all is legit o.0 Could someone please bring this to the attention of the right people? [opensuse-project] Changing the Chair of the Board

Dear Community, After six years on the openSUSE Board and five as its Chairperson, I have decided to step down as Chair of the openSUSE Board effective today, August 19. This has been a very difficult decision for me to make, with reasons that are diverse, interlinked, and personal. Some of the key factors that led me to make this step include the time required to do the job properly, and the length of time I've served. Five years is more than twice as long as any of my predecessors. The time required to do the role properly has increased and I now find it impossible to balance the demands of the role with the requirements of my primary role as a developer in SUSE, and with what I wish to achieve outside of work and community. As difficult as it is to step back from something I've enjoyed doing for so long, I am looking forward to achieving a better balance between work, community, and life in general. Serving as member and chair of the openSUSE Board has been an absolute pleasure and highly rewarding. Meeting and communicating with members of the project as well as championing the cause of openSUSE has been a joyous part of my life that I know I will miss going forward. openSUSE won't get rid of me entirely. While I do intend to step back from any governance topics, I will still be working at SUSE in the Future Technology Team. Following SUSE's Open Source policy, we do a lot in openSUSE. I am especially looking forward to being able to focus on Kubic & MicroOS much more than I have been lately. As I'm sure it's likely to be a question, I wish to make it crystal clear that my decision has nothing to do with the Board’s ongoing efforts to form an independent openSUSE Foundation. The Board’s decision to form a Foundation had my complete backing as Chairperson, and will continue to have as a regular openSUSE contributor. I have absolute confidence in the openSUSE Board; Indeed, I don't think I would be able to make this decision at this time if I wasn't certain that I was leaving openSUSE in good hands. On that note, SUSE has appointed Gerald Pfeifer as my replacement as Chair. Gerald is SUSE's EMEA-based CTO, with a long history as a Tumbleweed user, an active openSUSE Member, and upstream contributor/maintainer in projects like GCC and Wine. Gerald has been a regular source of advice & support during my tenure as Chairperson. In particular, I will always remember my first visit to FOSDEM as openSUSE Chair. Turning up more smartly dressed than usual, I was surprised to find Gerald, a senior Director at SUSE, diving in to help at the incredibly busy openSUSE booth, and doing so dressed in quite possibly the oldest and most well-loved openSUSE T-shirt I've ever seen. When booth visitors came with questions about SUSE-specific stuff, I think he took some glee in being able to point them in my direction while teasingly saying "Richard is the corporate guy here, I'm just representing the community.." Knowing full well he will continue being so community minded, while finally giving me the opportunity to tease him in return, it is with a similar glee I now hand over the reigns to Gerald. As much as I'm going to miss things about being chairperson of this awesome community, I'm confident and excited to see how openSUSE evolves from here.
