[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Hello, I do not have at hand the letter that is received by people asking to be a member but with no or nearly no contribution, and so refused. I think this letter is much too rude, and that it's a waste of good will not to make some sort of follow up. There are not so many :-) I can try to do so. The actual question to be discussed below is slightly different then the "Why are we here" in the title, but as philosophical and possibly even more important to us. In this talk https://events.opensuse.org/conference/osc15/proposal/650 it was discussed, that communication is important and that more important than _what_ we are doing and _how_ we are doing it, is _why_ we are doing it. And it is important to put this "why" answer first. All the other stuff is just minor details which follows. Which brings us back to the important question: Why are we here, or more precisely _Why are we contributing to free/libre/open source software_ (the openSUSE project and upstream software in our case) I already asked a few people and got several good reasons: 1) Because I want to help FLOSS to make the world a better place. (related: Because it makes me proud, knowing that many people using it for all kinds of tasks) 2) Because software should be free (since I have already written it, distributing it is free, it is useful to other people and they are even contibuting (ideas and some patches) back) 3) Because I want to use the best (in some of the dimensions of best) software (related: because I do not want to use proprietary software crap) 4) Because I can make it to do what I want. 5) Because there is a Challenge (while doing something that is useful and cool) 6) Because it is Fun Note: The numbering above is meant to help reference the items and not as a ranking. I happened to be looking thru activedoc today: https://activedoc.opensuse.org If you login (with your opensuse creds) and look at recent edits, its a pretty active site but 50% or more of the recent changes are new pages unrelated to opensuse. I thought of deleting some of them but I didn't find a delete option. Is there one? Ignoring that, my real issue is that the latest content seems to be for openSUSE 12.3. Is there an equivalent document set for 13.1 and 13.2? Hello, I want to follow up on the OSC-15 discussion. IMHO, the first thing to do is to scan the openSUSE members list to see who is still active and who is no more. Some questions: * could it be possible to have an interface like the one used to accept/refuse new members? this interface gives some short links to searchs allowing to know the activity of the people. Having the same one for member group would be great. * do we have a list of people voting for the last board ballot? * I plan to send a personal mail only to any openSUSE member witch I can't find any activity proof. I dropped on a wiki page a model for this letter: https://en.opensuse.org/User:Jdd/letter_to_members_2015 please can you read it and comment it. I want to be as kind as possible If some of you can help me on this task... we could share on some wiki page the list of active/inactive members to don't send twice the letter to the same people. Hello my friends, Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the conference due to family health problems. I saw the project meeting and I totally agree with Henne. Actually I was preparing a post about part of what he said. If there are no end users to use and promote it (because usually developers don't), then it's useless to have it. Go to events, bring more people (prefer end users) to community and just help them engage-grow. Help end users to find themselfs in the community. If they like it, they'll become developers. If they're not interested in developing, they'll help make our project fantabulous. In general, we have proven we're great at building the tools around building a distro, so lets leverage that as far as we can, take advantage of SUSE Elements for as much combined effort as we can, and make sure we're all having a lot of fun. ( Do what you want with this, it's just a set of ideas. ) (1) Tumbleweed is tumbleweed, and tumbleweed works. Don't change a thing about it, but encourage package/product maintainers to start working in OpenQA, so we can (continue to) have the most stable rolling GNU/Linux distro available. (2) Transition openSUSE packages over to Elements, up to X, but not including DEs or GUI apps. Lets take advantage of the situation to create more compatibility, and reduce redundant package maintenance on things that should be our stable foundation anyway. (3) openSUSE releases aligned with SLE GA & SP releases. Since we're building on SUSE Elements, it makes sense to use that as a release roadmap. (4) Re-spin openSUSE with Kernel::Stable For those that want a current vanilla kernel instead of the SUSE kernel, make it easy. Release on the same course as Tumbleweed: pkg update -> openQA -> release (5) Encourage DE project maintainers to Re-spin & release on major updates. GNOME 3.16 is stable? Release the openSUSE GNOME Live disc with 3.16. Plasma 5 is default? Release an updated openSUSE KDE image. After the Richard talk at OSC, the status of openSUSE stays unclear, that's normal it have to be discussed, but I see it like this: * Tumbleweed, the rolling release will the distribution for advanced users * openSUSE? * I new variant (name?) will be more stable, very long time support (at least 3 years), yearly release? Hello, I very much like the idea of closing together opensuse and SLE for a couple of reasons: * at least from my personal point of view for the last 3 releases of opensuse the stability of the release at its starting point constantly decreased, resulting in of repairing and porting phase that gets longer and long after every release even if your are only using packages offered by SuSE (e.g. have you tried to update from 12.1 or 12.2 over the release steps to 13.2 with owncloud?) * There are a couple of server targets that do not need the full SLES program but simply a rocket solid basis an 1 to 3 progrmans on it /like mail servers) that you either can put on docker or run for small business on metal with an long running distribution. But you do not want to change it every 18 months with an constantly increasing migration effort resulting from the previous point. * SLES has not always been as solid as one might have wanted in all aspect or package; but it took quit a time to repair it. Joined effort might speed up her. From the last point: I think it essential for this approach to define /the fast way back for patches and drivers (if possible even kernel releases) from the community to SLE/. In that case this approach will immediately pay back to SLE regarding the fact that the components in server hardware nowadays also changes nearly as frequently as in consumer desktops. In ancient times I used packages from the SuSE distrubution for SLES installations when they were not available there... Given the fact that there is still no solution for opensuse 13.2 to startup a WLAN as system networking instead of user login related (due to the timing issues coming from that insane ideology of systemd that SLES still partly avoids...) there we be many use cases that needs a more stable better tested distribution rather than the newest software. And yes: I'm running tumbleweed where need the newest kernel. opensuse distribution in the current constatlation is not fast enough for this in any case. Dear all! It has been awesome this year! So great to see so many of you again in The Hague! Some numbers: - We drank > 300L of tap beer and > 100L of openSUSE Beer (that's not bad)! - We drank ~250L coffee! - We had >70 sessions in 3 rooms, combined with the Kolab Summit we even had almost a 100 sessions spread over 6 rooms - At the height of the conference, on the Saturday afternoon, approx 220 openSUSE Conference and Kolab Summit attendees were in the building, that is an awesome result! - The group photo from the Sunday afternoon shows approx 150 people, and that isn't bad either! https://twitter.com/openSUSE/status/594813064387624960/photo/1 - Some people were carrying pedometers and the average daily stepratio was around 10k..... Dear Community, SUSE is preparing to pro-actively release a significant portion of the SUSE Linux Enterprise source code, including a regular stream of maintenance updates, to the openSUSE Project. These packages will give the community an enduring, stable, and maintained base, upon which exciting community led offerings could be built. An openSUSE community distribution built upon this base can plan for a sustainable stream of packages, as we intend to continue releasing and updating this platform in line with the cadence of SUSE Linux Enterprise and it's service packs. We at SUSE are going to be using this opportunity to focus more engineering efforts on the common elements between SLE and openSUSE, by directly increasing contributions to openSUSE and sharing sources, tools and processes to optimize collaboration for the mutual benefits. As members of the openSUSE community, we at SUSE invite everyone else in the community to collaborate on this base and to consider leveraging it for future openSUSE releases. We're keen to hear your feedback and talk about involvement in this project. I would like to see all the slides as the main window on the videos. Whenever the speaker is the occupant of the main window, the slides are difficult to read because they are in the window-in-the-window. Is this not a reasonable request? Hi, The Handling of Special Requests > Upstream Features sub heading at https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Openfate_process says > Features for upstream packages should be filed in general upstream. While https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Openfate_upstream_projects ambitiously describes about openFATE and then gives example of KDE explaining how could to use openFATE for upstream. Which one to follow. For now, I'm rejecting the feature request from upstream. [opensuse-project] Some questions regarding Package Life-Cycle and other openFATE topics

Hi, Can somebody explain the package life-cycle. It will help me with openFATE screening. The are different repositories Nightly, Factory, obs, user repositories. So, how does the life-cycle of a package starts. The user uploads package at his obs page, it then submits to Nightly, then to Factory repo and maybe someday it will reach to the distribution repo. Is something missing in this process and how does this transfer takes place. The openFATE documentation regarding package wishlist needs to explain more than >A package wish is a wish for inclusion in the next openSUSE distribution release. The first step is to build the package in the openSUSE Build Service, the second step is to get it >into the factory distribution. If a package is in factory repo or nightly repo should I make the feature package request as already completed or should make the status as marketplace or new. The the openFATE documentation explains about voting but the documentation for screening process doesn't anything about minimum requirement of votes to convert Unconfirmed feature to New. The documentation clearly explains if the description of feature is complete it can be set as new. But, where does voting come into place.
