[opensuse-project] opensuse-user not on gmane any more?

I just noticed today that the gmane.linux.suse.opensuse.user group is missing from gmane.org - did the project request the list be removed from gmane? Just wondering if it was intentional or if something went wrong somewhere. [opensuse-project] [GSoC 2014] OSEM Organizer Dashboard weekly update

Hello Community, my name is Chris and I am one of the Google Summer of Code Students involved in the Open Source Event Manager (OSEM). I am a student currently in the 3 year of the Bachelor of Science course with information systems and management major at the university of applied science in Nuremberg, Germany. I would like to take the opportunity to give you a short update of my work during the last week: A few days ago Henne migrated OSEM from Rails 3.2 to Rails 4.1. Because of that this week I have tried to fix bugs caused by this migration! In Rails 4, now PATCH replaces PUT for partial updates. Hence it was necessary to rewrite some url routes and update most of the html forms. Artem Chernikov gave me some advices and supported me during this task (thanks again!). Another task was to replace the deprecated Active Record methods. [opensuse-project] composition of OpenSUSE

For recent releases (not historical past), is OpenSUSE derived from other distributions (I have a coworker who thought all distributions trace back to Red Hat/Fedora and whom I am trying to disavow of this misunderstanding) or is it taking the inputs of the Linux kernel, GNU rest of OS plus building other packages from source distributions from the package maintainers (like LibreOffice). I know that Yum is included, but are there other parts from RedHat? Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, möchte einen NFS-Server starten - Auswahl des Verzeichnisses ist erfolgreich - aber beim Beenden tritt immer der Fehler auf dass idmapd nicht gestartet werden kann, es sollen die Domaineinstellungen überprüft werden. Die Überprüfung mit rpcinfo -p zeigt aber an, dass alle erforderlichen Dienste gestartet sind. Die IP-Adresse wird dynamisch bezogen. Die erforderlichen Pakete für NFS wurden alle installiert. Was mach ich verkehrt? Vielleicht können Sie mir behilflich sein. Hi all, I just came across a book by means of google book search titled "The official openSUSE 13.1 Guide to Virtualization with KVM", written by "SUSE, ActiveDoc openSUSE Contributors". That book is such a pile of ... *BEEP*... Let me just give one example: Section 6.1.1.2, "Local Access Control for UNIX sockets with PolKit" Quote: "Using the polkit-auth command ..." Note: polkit-auth does not exist on my openSUSE 13.1 installation, and neither zypper nor cnf can find it. Quote: "Editing /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf ..." Note: does not exist either. So who does QA for these books? I'm assuming they are really officially published by SUSE? [opensuse-project] [MATE][GSoC] Weekly report : ePub support in Atril

Hi community, This week's report is coming quite late, but that's mainly because now I don't send in reports unless I have actually implemented the features I talked about in my previous reports. So I finished implementing the search feature and now one can search through documents. Also the display works just fine, so you can use Atril to read your favourite e-books. And just so in case you do, please be sure to drop in feedback. I'll add the Table of Contents(index) feature and printing this week, and will try to complete everything but annotations by next Tuesday or so. After that I can focus on improving code quality and refactoring, not to mention testing the software by reading a lot of books, because let's face it, that's a test as good as any. Hey everyone! My report is a little late. I wanted to post a .webm of the working system. But it's got to wait a few days. Hopefully, one or two at max. (My mentor been busy, but we are working on fixing the current issue as fast as possible.) Current issue I work on: mounting drives in Virtualbox at boot - but it shows everything busy atm. What did I do this week: Debugged, improved, and finished my scripts. Now I have 2 scripts, they load each other (services). Everything works, except the mounting drives part. Hello everyone, This week I worked on the issue of getting the dynamic implementation of state_machine gem to pass all the existing tests. This required me to use Ruby's method_missing feature to reroute the model.machine.method calls to model.method . I have tried doing the same with a basic version in the Request model. However it is inefficient and leads to troubles in creating an object of Request. The rerouting is necessary in the spec files and validations. However the dynamic implementation seems to be working fine when tested on the rails console. The machine is created and changes dynamically reflected, with no extra conditions/code needed to handle the same. I shall be discussing this issue with my mentor over the next week and fix the same, so that it can be extended to other machines as well. Hi all! This week I spent most of my time with a little side project which I've started earlier. This is about to integrate GitHub Travis and OBS together. My mentors asked me to finalize it, because it seems very useful. Now it works like charm. All of the Zorp related packages in my GitHub are automatically builds in Travis, and after the successful build procedure, it sends them to my OBS where they are packaged to the selected distributions: * CentOS 7 * Debian 7.0 * Fedora 19 * Fedora 20 * openSUSE 13.1 * xUbuntu 12.04 * xUbuntu 14.04 The results are visible here: https://github.com/VPetyaa https://travis-ci.org/profile/VPetyaa https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:VPetya:travis Beside with this, I've also continued to implement the Zorp policy generator. Hello Community, This week I finished Email Notifications with all refactoring and suggestions by Henne and other members and by mentor James.I finished the first four notifications with delayed_jobs integration.I also added a subscribe button in the button list for conference partial in the home page for logged in users.The users now can subscribe/unsubscribe from notifications even if they register or submit a proposal.I thoroughly tested the subscribe feature in combination with registration. I also did some code clean-up to DRY things in email_settings.rb model.One thing that is left is to add markdown to the email templates, that I will do and complete the notifications with the last one that is still remaining. The commit are still in review https://github.com/openSUSE/osem/pulls/gopesht .Most probably, they will be pushed by start of next week, then I will take up Github issues that are referenced for Splash Page and other parts of OSEM. [opensuse-project] gsoc] Weekly status report - MATE gstreamer project

Hi, this is my thirteenth weekly status report for my GSoc project. The good news this week is that libmatemixer now has a working OSS support on FreeBSD and OpenBSD (and probably others). The bad news is that the initial design ideas I had proved to be partially wrong which delayed my work quite a bit and I still haven't sorted it out completely. So for now the OSS support lives in its own git branch, which contains some design changes and experiments that I'm yet to finalize. I hope I'll move on with it during the weekend. I've also began working on supporting OSS4 and ALSA and as the end of the coding period is approaching quickly, I'll have to speed up and hopefully include working support for both of them before the end of the next week. Hi. If you search obkey at http://software.opensuse.org/find you get the package with that name, but there is a obkey-lxde package too and it is not shown in the result list. The same happens with btnx and btnx-config, and I suppose that will happen with all packages with names like these. Is there any way to list all the packages containing a given substring in their names? Hi community, I am sending this report late because I thought I might as well fix my problems before I report for the week, so sorry for that. Finally after much deliberation I was finally able to solve my thread and job problems, meaning that I finally was able to successfully integrate thumbnails for epub documents in Atril. I also updated the window chrome to set it to the valid epub options. The X-windows errors that I used to refer to in a lot of my previous commits were mostly due to this, and other than that because I finally discovered the problem that for so long I thought was something to do with pixmaps, turned out to be a zoom-control problem. I should have only figured so, as "enlargement" of windows usually has something to do with zoom. I finally found and fixed it. For the coming weeks I can finally start working on my additional planned features, as well as working on GTK3 compatibility. It remains to see whether I would be able to do so much with it, since I did spend quite a bit of time working on this problem, but I figured it's best to incorporate all existing Atril features to epub documents rather than make much change to it. Hey everyone! This week I worked on the services / chain loading thingie. Yesterday I managed to solve the issue I had most recently. (Systemd removes the "00", "01" whatever prefix you have, and you get a module name. So "01clf" becomes "clf". Or whatever you name your module. So I had three modules, and they had prefixes. And the same name. Same name, as in 01clf, 02clf, 03clf. Of course this prefix-removal logic seems simple and OK. But when you try to find the issue... it's not that easy to debug. - Dracut does not add even ONE of the modules. All of them fails. ("not found") - If you specify to add even just "01clf" or "clf", module not found error happens. - Even if you set verbose flag, set verbosity to 6, you see no error.) So. Uhm now I have the dialog started up in the second step. Working on that at the moment (well, just rebooted my VM after I saved my logs from systemd). I also had some real-life™ this week - had to help my father with some translation and stuff. Will keep working today to make the boot happen from the pendrive (so I can make a cool .webm or something to show off). Just wanted to submit my report in time. Good luck for everyone! Hi there, This week I was making changes to a series of patches about 20 patches I submitted last week as the libvirt developers recommended. In the meantime, I have noticed that there is a lot of activity on the xen mailing list regarding snapshot support in xen and I hope it will result in something good and maybe I will finish my work on snapshot support in libvirt xenlight driver. Next week I submit version two of the series of patches which will hopefully include a working prototype of a xen-xl parser. Hello everyone, This is a brief summary of my progress last week. There was a quick change in the method of implementation of creating a dynamic state machine. My mentor helped me by pointing out the method given in the official documentation of the state_machine gem. https://github.com/pluginaweek/state_machine#static--dynamic-definitions I have implemented the same for the request model and tested out its complete working on the console. This method is also very robust as the states and transition_events will be loaded every call on the fly dynamically, hence not requiring to recreate or empty the machine at any point of time(like updates or create actions). However the method has minor shortcomings which I will be discussing with my mentor soon. Next week, I plan on extending this method to the remaining machines,namely reimbursement and shipment. Hello Community, Well, this week was really busy for me, I had to go college twice for my registration purposes and room allotment and it consumed 2 working days of the week.Still James co-operated with me and I have pushed the remaining notifications, they are currently in review.I am just left with one more notification from the list that I mentioned last weekend.Delayed job integration is still pending. On a different note, I have some github issues pending for the splash and work that I have done which was found as bugs.So I wish to spent the next week completing the github issues, integrate delayed jobs or any background queuing gem for sending emails and complete the notifications. As per my proposal, I discussed with James, we are not using redis in the production and so we will not intrgrate any in-house notification system for OSEM. Rather, I will have to discuss other feature that I can implement in time and would also write some documentation of using the splash. That's all this week!! Hi, this is my twelfth weekly status report for my GSoc project. This week I did a bit of everything. I did more work on the MATE volume control application, libmatemixer received a load of updates, mainly in the PulseAudio code and I did preparations to extend libmatemixer with OSS support in the means of research, a BSD virtual machine and there is an initial skeleton code and build support in libmatemixer. While there are still some open issues in the volume control app and libmatemixer, for the next week I'd like to focus mainly on getting the OSS support to work. As I'm the kind of person who enjoys doing many things at once, I'll of course also keep testing everything and work on the open problems. I hope I'll be able to report a working OSS support with my next progress report. The driver cannot create the policy.py (which is like a configuration file for Zorp) yet, but it builds an XML, which I will generate the policy file from. Hi fellow Geeko-lovers, I'm coming to you with some news: due to some changes in my life (pretty good news, you'll hear about that in a couple of months), I've decided to step down from the chairman position of the openSUSE board. I'm stepping down with regrets because these two years as chairman have been totally awesome, and I would love to keep contributing to the project that way. But I know I won't have enough time to dedicate to being a chairman in the months to come, and I'm a strong believer that board members (including the chairman) should be active in their role. Having motivation is extremely important, of course, but free time is simply essential. It's been a fantastic experience to work with past and current board members (Henne, Manu, Will, Raymond, Bruno, Richard, Andrew, Robert and Kostas). Things are obviously not perfect, but I still feel we've made good progress: even though what the board is up to is not always visible from the outside, I do hope that the minutes of the regular board meetings help with this, and that concrete improvements such as the booth boxes or the local production reimbursement program help illustrate the actions of the board. All that doesn't mean you can't help the board :-) (for instance, don't hesitate to suggest ideas for hackathons!) In case there's any doubt, I won't be simply disappearing. I'll just find new ways to contribute to openSUSE in the free time that I will still have. Of course, we've been working on a transition and a new chairman has been appointed already. But I'll leave this bit of news to the openSUSE board... I can only say that I'm fully convinced that the new chairman will rock! :-) And that I'm confident that the current board is pushing in the right direction! Aloha, Is there a particular reason why we don't have an archive of previous conferences that is easily browse-able? As soon as a conference is over, the site is updated with the next event, which isn't unreasonable; the issue is that there is no way for someone to have a look at previous events and see topics etc, which may be of use for someone thinking of submitting a talk or even just attending. It also helps in getting sponsorship, as a prospective sponsor can see details of what their money will be helping. FOSDEM do a great job of having an archive - just append the year you are interested in and voila! Hi community, Sorry for being a day late with the report, was feeling under the weather yesterday so didn't feel like writing one. So this week, now that I finally have depth knowledge of the large code base of Atril I re-factored the code to create an extended type with the WebKitWebView so that I may get rid of all the GTK errors. Must say it has been quite a learning experience. So as I was saying I re-factored the code so that now we have a new type to handle the webview and all its associated actions. Building on this I implemented the thumbnailer and I'm working on sidebar links today. I expect to work on the search and bookmark(link) features next week. I also skipped on Mathjax earlier, so I would be adding support for that this week as well. With only 5 weeks of coding remaining I hope to pick up the pace on the project so that I may be able to get it completed in time, and I'm trying my best to do the same. Search is a major feature that should be available and that would be my priority for the next week. Hey everyone! So this week I worked on chain loading the scripts to make things working all good and proper. (Okay this sounds kinda short, but I started to pick apart all the scripts in charge of booting - Dracut. So after I tracked down which one to remove, which one to keep, I started re-writing my scripts, once again. Now I have three services, three scripts, in order to have the dialog displayed, do preparation, and boot the final system.) Uhm well, today is testing day. Wrote my script that copies everything written into my Dropbox folder (so I can keep my changes saved all the time), and will move the scripts to my pendrive and give it a go. Well, that's it for this week. Meanwhile I also kept my quickblog up-to-date (which I haven't posted here yet, but I will do later on.) Good luck for everyone! Hello Community, This week I started with email notifications. James said the listed 5 notifications * Notify all participants when Conference dates/Registration dates are updated.Highlight dates. * Notify all participants when venue is changed.Highlight address and Venue name. * Notify all participants when a supporter level added.Also to notify, when the price of the supporter level in changed. * Notify all participants when Call for papers dates are added/updated. * Notify all participants when the schedule is made public. are good to go.So I completed the first and the second, both are in pipeline and is not merged yet.The other thing I thought while implementing is that it takes lot of time to send email to participants in the middle of updating the conference for the first (say).So sending emails while updating data is a really bad idea, so I thought of putting these in the background jobs, well in layman terms Queue them to get processed later so that the UX is not hampered. I thought of using https://github.com/collectiveidea/delayed_job . But using this didn't seem to worked well.The emails are getting delivered without using the gem and on using it is throwing errors. So major time went on fixing this and still I am not been to fix this issue.I worked with James and it figured out that for new emails I should first write tests and then reproduce the error that I got with delated_jobs on specs. So probably, I try to finish email notifications with the gem.Well, that's all this week. Hello everyone, This is a brief summary of my progress last week. There were 2 primary objectives i.e. 1) implement a validation to ensure that requests cannot be submitted with empty expenses and write a spec to test the same 2) move the implementation of dynamic code to a method which can be accordingly invoked upon update and create actions The code for the first objective is completed and tested as well. For the second objective, I have been able to identify the spots where the method needs to be invoked and tested for one particular case. I will implement the same for remaining places after getting some suggestions about it from my mentor. [opensuse-project] [gsoc] Weekly status report - MATE gstreamer project

Hi, this is my eleventh weekly status report for my GSoc project. This week I continued working on MATE volume control application as well as libmatemixer. I have decided to dig a little deeper into the application, clean up the code, rewrite a few parts and fix problems related to an unfinished GTK3 port. This turns out to be a large amount of work, but I think the extra spent time is well worth. There have also been many fixes to both the application and libmatemixer and libmatemixer gained support for accessing PulseAudio stream database, which is needed for the application to provide event volume control and move streams to different devices. At this moment all the previous functionality of the application is restored and the code is in a much better shape than before. There is still some work left, but I intend to finish it within a couple of days. After that I'd like to engage more people to test the application and get back to working on libmatemixer. Hello to everyone. It was recommended to me by someone who works with openSUSE to join this mailing list and introduce myself since I am very interested in getting involved again with a Linux/open source project. My name is Lee Ward. I previously worked with the Fuduntu Linux project a couple years ago and was in charge of communications/public relations and was in charge of managing all the social media, interviews, and press releases. Additionally, I worked with packaging, testing, and supporting end users. I have a little programming knowledge and about intermediate understanding of administration, etc. of Linux. I've been using Linux since 1998 and SuSE was one of the first distros I used. As I stated above, I am very interested in getting involved again with a Linux or other open source project. Towards the end of the Fuduntu distro, I was working closely with some openSUSE team members as some of us were looking at our options of moving forward within the Linux community. The experience was one of the best ones I ever had with a project and is why openSUSE was my first thought now that I'm ready to get my hands dirty again. I'm not really sure who to talk to or where to go from here on getting involved and that was why someone with the distro team told me to make an introduction in hopes that perhaps someone else can help me get steered in the right direction. Hi there, As I said last time the goals of the project changed slightly because there was not a lot of enthusiasm by xen developers on snapshot support in xen so after the patch I wrote for libvirt I moved on and I am now writing a xen-xl parser for libvirt. This week I refactored the code in xen_xm.c as I want to reuse. Reading directly from the diff, here is what I have: For the function xenParseXM, I split it into xenParseXMGeneral; parse the general configs such as uuid, OS type etc, tagged for reuse. xenParseXMMem; parses memory configuration options, tagged for reuse in the xen-xl parser. xenParseXMVif ;parses the virtual frame-buffer configuration, I will also reuse this one. xenParseXMDisk ; parse the disk configuration but this will have to be redone. xenParseXMPCI; parses the pci devices config, I will reuse this at first but I will redo it latter. xenParseXMSerial; parses the serial devices config, also to be reused. xenParseXMActions; parses the actions the take place at certain events, that is power_off, c xenParseXMCPU ; parses the cpu allocation, also to be reused. xenParseXMOS ; parses the OS config options for HVM and paravirtualized domains. xenParseXMVif ;parse the xm network configuration but will have to be redone. For the function xenFormatXM, I split it into a similar set of functions. Next week, I move to the xen-xl parser where I will start by writing the missing functions such as xenParseXLDisk and xenParseXLVif.I will also write xenParseXLGraphicsSplice for latter use. Hello everyone! This week I spent my time with crafting my scripts and making the boot pretty. Pretty as in, work normally. Because so far I used a trick (rd.break, anyone?) to get things up. Taming Dracut is not the easiest thing, if you have no former experience doing so. But I managed to dig through all the modules scripts now (literally, all of them), and now I'm working on the correct way of injecting our system into it. A bulleted list with a somewhat accurate timeline: - Made a quick blog, so my mentor can follow my progress much easier. It's also good for me to backtrack my process a lot easier. - Fixed up the CLF system script, so it mounts up 'modules'. Basically squashfs files, which can contain software, or modules, for example. Currently it's used to update the image's modules. - Fixed up the scripts so they would chainload perfectly. The system gets mounted flawless after the user selects his image of choice. - Learned a ton about Dracut again. One such thing was it's conf and switches. How they behave. - Spent a ton of time with pivot_root, switch_root and the like (manual mount). Because pivot_root and switch_root would fail miserably at boot. Michal (my mentor) had a great idea. The default mount point and a clean exit booted up the new system. This took me to the right track. - 'exec' fooled me great at debugging. ;_; - Learned how to use expect, where to execute it. Not sure if we will need it in the final version without breaks... But expect is so powerful, it may come in handy later on. - Debugging, debugging, debugging. So CLF is at the stage where automagic is being worked on. Mount is done = booting, working system. I need to add syslinux to the equation and it's a thing people could already install on a pendrive. (Of course, we are far from the final goals, as there are so many things I could improve, and so many things I could implement, even if the basics are done. Which is not the case at the moment, so yeah.) Thanks to the quickblog, expect lenghtier reports from now on. (I did work a lot before as well, but I just summed things up real fast each week.) Hello everyone! Been sick since last Sunday, and it only got worse from Monday. (But I am getting better!) So, this week I fiddled around with Dracut (surprise!), and Dialog. I ran into a little problem. Dialog is not too keen to run at early stages. It runs, but input is close to non-existent. So what I worked on: - Placed CLF into different hooks. (haven't tried to make it the very last thing) - Removing auto-mounts and adding CLF (this worked fine). - Trying out 'whiptail' - Debian's alternative to Dialog - Currently I've been spending time modifying Dialog's source code - This led me to a custom config file - with custom binds. Well, the source code is quite promising, and the binds... I have yet to test them. Tomorrow I will check the config bind stuff, then the hard re-binding. If those won't work, I will dissect Dracut so it can load Dialog. (The sweet side of open-source softwares.) Hello Community, This week I finished the remaining components: Gallery and Footer and added Markdown for description fields that are rendered in the splash.The gallery is designed such that the splash page load is not affected.When the user clicks the "Gallery" button for the first time, the photos are loaded in a modal with the carousel via AJAX.After that for preceding clicks only the modal is invoked, until the page is refreshed. I did this by keeping a countdown variable in Javascript. For the footer I just made a up-arrow button which is displayed when the user scrolls down length of 100px.On clicking the button the user is taken to the topmost component, i,e the banner via smoothscroll.So the navigation and UX is built properly by using animation, tabs on the header and a button at the footer. I implemented markdown for only description fields that are rendered directly on to the splash.I did this using redcarpet gem and also added bootstrap-markdown(toopay) editor for description fields so that easily markdown tags are added by click without any hassle. Next week, I will start with email notifications.I have listed some notifications on my Trello board as suggested by James, to keep track of things.I still has to discuss what notifications are relevant to be sent. Hello everyone, This week, I wrote the first implementation method to create the request state_machine dynamically. There were some prerequisites for this like adding a new field to the state model to identify the unique initial state of the machine. So I added the same and also wrote a validation method validates_intial_state which ensures that only one initial state exists per machine. After this I changed the current static creation method of state_machine in request.rb to a dynamic one by fetching the data from the database (defined by admin role). I also changed the code for assigning states in request to a dynamic approach. Of course the most important part of this exercise was to ensure that all the existing tests are passed with this new code. After a few changes as pointed out by my mentor, I was able to make the code pass all the specs. In the next week, I will make this implementation method more robust by ensuring that it will work under different situations like updating the state_machine details, accessing the model when machine details are absent,etc. I will also be adding a new validation to the request model (has_no_expenses?). Both the above tasks will include extensive testing as well. Hi, this is my tenth weekly status report for my GSoc project. This week I mainly continued porting the MATE volume control application to libmatemixer. I now have a working application, which however still has some issues that I will work on the next few days. The porting work has also discovered many bugs in libmatemixer which I have either fixed or have been working on. Also, I have ported the MATE Settings Daemon to libmatemixer, which was initially on the next week's todo list. Next week I'm going to continue on fixing problems and cleaning things up in both libmatemixer and the applications. When I'm satisfied with the state I intend to get back to libmatemixer and work on adding support for other sound systems, but that depends on how quickly things go. Hi all! First of all, I just apologize for forgetting to write the report last week, I can say I was quite busy these days. Last week I spent all my time with learning, this week started with my thesis defense, (which means I had to do a presentation about it and answer questions, so I prove that I wrote it myself) and I also took my finals. I'm happy to announce that I ended up with mark 5 (or grade A), so I'm quite happy now! :) Back to the project, I passed the midterm, and consulted with my mentors. We talked about how to continue, I fixed the OBS issue that I mentioned before, so packaging with my latest source works well. Next week I'm going to do a PhD entry exam (this also needs some preparation), but it will not pull me back from my plan to finish putting together the last pieces of my OpenStack, and to start the implementation of Zorp driver.
