[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. I am seeing this with an openSUSE 12.1 system at home, and also a Factory system at work: % host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 And then, when running zypper patch or zypper up, I see Retrieving: repomd.xml [error] Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable Alas, my provider nor that network at work support IPv6. Still, my system has IPv6 enabled since roaming around on different networks, IPv6 may be present, or even necessary there. (This does not happen all the time, sometimes if I retry a bit later the system uses IPv4 and everything works.) Now, is this just a setup problem and I should simply and unconditionally disable IPv6? Or are some parts of our update or network stack in need of some adjustments? For the time being, unless this is just me running into this, should we disable IPv6 on download.opensuse.org? [opensuse-project] openSUSE 12.3 doesn't support any video types

Sadly out-of-the-box, openSUSE 12.3 doesn't support any kind of video at all, not even WebM. I have opened a bug on it "Bug 802980 - WebM Video fails to play in KDE desktop", but as release draws near the chances of it being looked at appears slim. Lack of volunteers The call for volunteers to organize Hackathons has resulted in no response. The call for volunteers to help with the Summit had a low response and it appears that it is difficult to get people to step up and be more engaged with non technical issues. - Should we try to broadcast searches for volunteers to a wider audience then just sending things to the -project list. Every month, every other month, quarterly? We will stick to a two month report for now to see how things go. AI: Vincent to send draft to board list by end of this week. 4.) Hackathon organization The last event was organized by the openSUSE team at SUSE. This group of people does not want to be the main focus to organize Hackathons. Such sprints should ideally be organized by individual teams, such as KDE, GNOME, etc. However, at this point we do not have the culture within the community to run these events. Until we establish a cadence and culture of hackathons we might need to lean on the openSUSE team to keep organizing the events for a while longer. As long as Hackathons are on SUSE premises a SUSE employ must be present, thus the openSUSE team will most likely be involved anyway. AI: Vincent to discuss with SUSE to have someone who enjoys organizing events and has expertise. This does not have to be a full time position. AI: Robert send a message to -project asking for volunteers 5.) openSUSE Summit We know that the event is scheduled. We have 3 volunteers at this point but we do not have anyone who is ready to step up and run the show similar to the way Bryan did last year. Robert is willing to run the program committee. Hi, As you may be aware, the most recent Hackathon was organized by the openSUSE team at SUSE. You may also have read Agustine's recent message indicating that this team, which is part of the openSUSE community as a whole, does not have the interest to continue the organization of Hackathons in the future. Therefore, your openSUSE board is looking for 2 or 3 volunteers that would be willing to step up to the plate and organize a Hackathon every now and then. We (the board) are also trying to find 1 or 2 go to people within SUSE that have experience in organizing events and that will be able to lend a helping hand. Therefore, whomever steps up will not be alone. Also, SUSE is committed to continue to provide access to facilities such that we do not have to have a Hackathon at a coffee shop or rent a room somewhere. What is expected from the volunteers: - organize 2-3 Hackathons a year - document the things you do, such that the knowledge can be transferred to others - create a process and guidelines that can eventually be easily followed by other teams within the openSUSE community. Such that for example the artteam, the KDE team, or the GNOME team could pick up your documentation and organize a team hackathon in relatively short order. Thus, in the long run the vision is that the volunteers that bootstrap the process and organize the first few events turn more into facilitators and mentors in the long run. As a volunteer you will need to enjoy getting things organized and helping people with all kinds questions and problems that may be related to a Hackathon event. Hi, 12.3 Release as you know, RC1 was already published. We are heading RC2 and, if everything goes as expected, we will release on time. Together with you, openSUSE Team at SUSE is dedicating resources to make sure that this release, shorter than usual, has at least the same quality than any other. At the same time, as previously announced, we are taking some actions to reduce the barrier for contributors to participate in this release process: 1.- Hackathons has been a positive experience with impact in the Release. We are working on the report to be sent to the Board. 2.- We are taking some early steps to bring back a community driven QA effort. 3.- We are working in the marketing activities around the release earlier. This seemed to be the major barrier for your involvement during 12.2 cycle. Some other actions are being taken: SUSE in general, and openSUSE Team in particular, are pushing to bring secure boot to openSUSE as soon as possible. Many of you have asked us about this topic. As soon as we have confirmed news we will communicate them. We are making progress in ARM support in openSUSE. SLE/openSUSE As Ralf Flaxa, SUSE VP Engineering, announced in both Hackathons to participants, SUSE will be little by little adding resources to develop our next generation of SLE products, so we will see a progressive increase of activity around factory. When and how is something we will communicate as soon as the action plan is confirmed. oSC13 SUSE involvement framework in the openSUSE Conference 2013 is clear by now. We have to work on executing the tasks assigned to us, specially in the legal/administrative/financial area. Having a community driven conference is very good news for all of us. In our new role, SUSE fully support the event and the organization team. oSC13 is OUR event. Board - SUSE Right after the Release, one of the major working areas will be to define the new relation framework between SUSE and openSUSE Board. I talked about it in a previous mail. It should be closed by the end of the fiscal year (March 31st) so we can execute it in the following one. SUSE is already working internally in the proposal. As announced, we will delegate the definition and organization of the future Hackathons to the Board. SUSE will provide administrative and economic support for them to take place, beside our infrastructure and facilities, as possible locations. openSUSE Team As you probably know, we have an opening for a Graphical Designer / artist for openSUSE Team. The current pressure upon the artwork team, specially in tasks related with the Release, is high. We expect to reduce it for the next release. I would like to thank the artwork team for the job done in the past, but specially, in this release. You guys took risks and delivered. Another opening at openSUSE Team will be announced in the following days. After the release, openSUSE Team plan to develop three actions that will have a positive impact, in my opinion: a.- We will use a tool to manage our activity, so follow up our actions by openSUSE community will be easier and, in a second step, work with us too. b.- We will create a public team regular communication channel. We haven't decided which and how yet. c.- We will put effort into improving the merchandising shipment and the TSP management, together with the community members and SUSE employees involved. These past months some of you has requested me to be "more active". My public involvement in the openSUSE channels has been very limited as a result of the new openSUSE Team set up. Vincent Untz is driving the relation with the Board and Jos is assuming gradually a more prominent role as router for non technical topics between the Team and the community. Hello, I would like to request to release openSUSE 12.3 Blue-Ray Disc (BD) ISO image. It is beneficial for several reasons: 1. It will make openSUSE easier to use in virtualization environments. (the ISO will serve as a static offline mirror image for multiple openSUSE VMs) -- even for those, who lack actual BD hardware. 2. It will make for an easier and faster install, for those who have BD hardware. 3. It will finally allow to put whole repository of openSUSE into a single medium. Surely it will take extra space on the mirror, but: Only few mirrors are needed, because the amount of actual downloads in this format is expected to be 'limited'. BD penetration rate is still in single-digits. 3 BD images needs to be created: 1. Bootable openSUSE-12.3-i586 2. Bootable openSUSE-12.3-x86-64 3.
