[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. I am seeing this with an openSUSE 12.1 system at home, and also a Factory system at work: % host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 And then, when running zypper patch or zypper up, I see Retrieving: repomd.xml [error] Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable Alas, my provider nor that network at work support IPv6. Still, my system has IPv6 enabled since roaming around on different networks, IPv6 may be present, or even necessary there. (This does not happen all the time, sometimes if I retry a bit later the system uses IPv4 and everything works.) Now, is this just a setup problem and I should simply and unconditionally disable IPv6? Or are some parts of our update or network stack in need of some adjustments? For the time being, unless this is just me running into this, should we disable IPv6 on download.opensuse.org? [opensuse-project] 12.3 Schedule and development

Given that 12.2 slipped by 2 months, and the development process for 12.3 is "to be discussed", what schedule are we working on towards 12.3 at the moment? Every time I've been involved in a project without a schedule, we've had a long period of (probably highly satisfying for developers) of 'undirected hacking' followed by crisis, followed by a rush to 'get it out before people forget who we are' which inevitably had some fallout (I'm thinking of the period leading up to KDE 4.0 here ;). So I'd like to start the discussion now before we lose a month waiting to discuss it at osc12, where only a fraction of the active members of the project are is going to be present anyway. You don't want everything to be decided by German Engineers* for you do you? Some ideas to start the ball rolling: * openSUSE 12.2 original schedule + 8 months = openSUSE 12.2 actual release + 4 months = Do a short cycle and release in March 2013, essentially 12.2 + bugfixes and updates * openSUSE 12.2 actual release + 8 months = May 2013, business as usual, using a fixed process to solve the problems that caused the 12.2 slip * Extend the release cycle keeping same process and longer stabilization period (effective 12.2 release process; leads to shipping 'outdated' stuff) * Change the process to plan more features in advance (as much as this is realistic given we mostly ship what our upstreams deliver) and work together to achieve these Please, save your 'my vote is for this' type of replies. And if you're an armchair general willing to type paragraphs of email here but not a single OBS checkin, meeting participaton or wiki update to 12.3, go do something more pleasurable with your fingers instead. This discussion is not about your favourite kind of icecream, as if that will change anything. This need a reasoned discussion on what to do in future, to get a majority of the actors in the project to agree to act together, and then action. Otherwise we will default to an arbitrary schedule, several months of undirected hacking and taking what comes from upstream, reactive release management to get the result bootable and not too likely to blow up in users' faces, and frantic analysis of the brew by -marketing to make it sound like a consistent whole offering an attractive narrative of improvement (Guess what I did for the last few weeks). All, Google s once again running the Google Code-In project that we as the openSUSE project have participated in previously. It would be great if someone can step up and drive the organization. Last year Manu did a great job and we had a successful Code-In. Below is the announcement: Later, Robert Hello GSoC Mentors, We are excited to announce [0] that we will be running the Google Code-in [1] contest for 13-17 pre-university students again this fall. The contest will begin for students on Monday, November 26th, 2012 [2]. Organizations will be able to apply to be one of the 10 mentoring organizations beginning Monday, October 22nd (the Monday after the GSoC Mentor Summit in Mountain View, CA). We will have a session on Google Code-in during the Mentor Summit for people to learn more about the program and for previous mentors and org admins to give us their feedback and thoughts on the program. When you read through the Contest Rules for this year you will notice some major changes that we implemented based on your feedback and student feedback from last year. The main points are below with more mentor information on the GCI Wiki [3]. The point system has been overhauled and now every task is worth one point. The 5 students with the highest number of completed tasks with your org will be the pool from which you, the mentoring org, will choose your 2 Grand Prize winners based on the overall complete body of work of those 5 students. There will be 10 Mentoring Orgs for a total of 20 Grand Prize Winners (compared to 10 last year). Translation tasks will no longer be a part of the Google Code-in contest, either as its own category or as a part of documentation efforts. If students want to go for the Grand Prize they will work predominantly with one org and will hopefully become involved with the community of that org and will stay long after the GCI contest is over. Students will not earn cash prizes for their work. They will earn certificates and t-shirts and then they can go for the grand prize if they wish. The contest was shortened by a week at the beginning of the contest period so it will now start after the Thanksgiving holidays in the USA. We hope you will help us spread the word about the Google Code-in contest so we can introduce more young developers to the wonderful world of open source. Hi all, The dust is finally starting to settle after returning from the openSUSE Summit -- which was a pretty good event, btw; thanks to the sponsors (SUSE, ownCloud, Omnibond) and to the whole organization team, and especially to Bryen and Alan who did a fantastic job! I just wanted to write a quick mail about this announcement: obviously, I'm excited to join the board as chairman! I'm wishing all the best to Alan who is moving to the OpenStack Foundation, and he will for sure have a good use there for his experience as chairman of the openSUSE board. I also want to thank the current board for approving my appointment. I believe the board can do a lot to serve and guide the community. And for this to work fine, the board needs input and feedback from the community about the non-technical topics (technical topics like "systemd vs sysvinit" are better handled by all the teams we have, including the release team). So don't hesitate to send to board(a)opensuse.org, or just to me if you prefer, your input and feedback about what you believe the board should do, what we are doing good and what we are doing bad. My intent is not to start a huge introspection thread on opensuse-project (I don't think that'd work well), so be careful when replying, we're watching you ;-) Several board members will obviously be coming to the openSUSE Conference, so if you happen to go there, you can also wait a bit and have a in-person discussion with any of us. I've had such chats during the Summit, and that was really useful! Finally, I'd like to remind everyone that there will be board elections in a couple of months. Every openSUSE member can run for the elections (unless that member already served for two consecutive periods). So start thinking about it; this is a great way to contribute to the project and help it move forward. openSUSE Summit has come and gone, and now it's time to draw the line. Many people has been spoken to, many discussions took place and the end result of all those discussions is the following proposal. [Please Note: the proposal is from ME personally, and is targeted at the artwork team AND the developmental team, as I strongly believe in community involvement] A) It has been discussed on-and-off for some time that openSUSE is in dare need of re-branding, or to be even more precise - of branding, as there currently is practically none. Changing a default wallpaper from one release to another does not constitute a strong, recognizable brand name. As a part of the branding precess (should we agree on one at all) we will attempt to: i) Develop openSUSE specific styling guidelines; iI) Develop openSUSE specific look and feel including - icons, desktop theme, window theme; iii) Restyle the website to follow the guidelines and the desktop theme conventions; iv) [Possibly] redesign the logo itself None of those changes however are going to happen tomorrow, or even in the next release. If any of these does happen it's only upon the grater community consent and involvement. So, consider this to be an [active] proposal, and start the discussion. B) Now to the near future (next release). I would like to propose a few changes to the current artwork and styling process. i) To separate the boot-loader image from the desktop wallpaper and make those into two totally separate efforts ii) The boot-loader (including GRUB, boot-splash, and login) will be styled by the artwork team internally and should be as simple as possible and vector based iii) The wallpaper will be decided upon via contest (just like the last time), but this time around we do it entirely with the collection from Flickr, and demand specific copyright license for each picture submitted This is all for now.
