[opensuse-project] Science repository
Hello. It would be nice to add science [1] repository to YaST additional repositories list [2]. This repository provides scientific and engineering software that mostly not included into main repository. Science repository quite stable and well maintained. Wishing you a succesful achievement on those tasks. It would be great to have it easily available from YaST. So we can promote it better. Maybe he wants this to be able to provide users with a central place for newer/updated versions of the packages, like we do with for example KDE, GNOME and many other things? Just wondering...

the science repo has its place and shall exist. scientific apps rarely follow any software engineering route.. if one looks into the .spec files of some of them would probably want to commit suicide immediately... Joke aside now. science shall be devel/update for packages that shall end up in factory. I will try to compile a list with duplicates within Education... if I get time.. I think I tried to get science added to the community repos for few years... now I gave up on hope. It is no joke, sadly. Academics are not terribly interested in coding, but more in that their algorithms give some result. No blame there, but it leads to a level of quality that is not satisfactory for distribution of their code - especially should it become a hit record. Because there are few "proven" libraries (e.g. gnutls is a proven library for SSL), crosslinking to previously unseen projects is not all that rare. Everybody who is willing to use autotools as the primary Makefile generator gets the autotools and cross-distro packaging part done for her/him. Call in early while your project is still small! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Dmitry, K12 high school... Maintaining for sles/sled I am not very happy with that... I would prefer to concentrate only on opensuse current and future... maybe cause I am in a good mood maybe current-1... Human power is limited and I really do not see to many volunteers to support more than 1 maybe two versions they do not use. Some time ago we wanted to have a responsible for each branch of science... unfortunately the plan did not work very well... but slowly the science repo grew. Great job of solving things between education and science I do not know how you did it but congrats. regards, Alin On Wednesday 26 Sep 2012 21:13:51 Dmitry Roshchin wrote:

Yes, SLE support is a problem due to old versions of rpm and rpm macros collection. But SLE is usually used in workstations and supercomputers.
Human power is limited and I really do not see to many volunteers to support more than 1 maybe two versions they do not use.

Dmitry, Supercomputers use sles,or better said some flavour,... and I should know, I worked in one centre, we do not really use sles precompiled apps. sled I have to admit I do not know anyone using, all people I know use opensuse. Now I do not want to be bad... but usually when sled is generated it is very close to one of the opensuse versions... they can take whatever packages they want at that moment and after maintain the updates. I suggest you to start a thread with packages that need love on mailing list. Periodically publish the status and ask for help... I am sure more people would jump and help in this way. Unfortunately it's impossible to add all packages to factory. For example, it's necessary to disable post build checks for scilab. And Jos Poortvliet was right, sometimes updates in scientific software are very important. It would be great to allow access to new versions by the easiest way. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
