Yes, SLE support is a problem due to old versions of rpm and rpm macros collection. But SLE is usually used in workstations and supercomputers.
Human power is limited and I really do not see to many volunteers to support more than 1 maybe two versions they do not use.
Some time ago we wanted to have a responsible for each branch of science... unfortunately the plan did not work very well... but slowly the science repo grew.
Great job of solving things between education and science I do not know how you did it but congrats.
I used OBS :-) There is long list of problematic packages in science projects, so work, work and work.
