[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. I am seeing this with an openSUSE 12.1 system at home, and also a Factory system at work: % host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 And then, when running zypper patch or zypper up, I see Retrieving: repomd.xml [error] Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable Alas, my provider nor that network at work support IPv6. Still, my system has IPv6 enabled since roaming around on different networks, IPv6 may be present, or even necessary there. (This does not happen all the time, sometimes if I retry a bit later the system uses IPv4 and everything works.) Now, is this just a setup problem and I should simply and unconditionally disable IPv6? Or are some parts of our update or network stack in need of some adjustments? For the time being, unless this is just me running into this, should we disable IPv6 on download.opensuse.org? Hi, here's a small summary of the 10th (coding) week. Last week I worked mostly on the new fetcher code which I finally pushed into the git repo. Apart from this I did some refactoring here and there. The todo for this and the next week is to start with the new osc user interface (that is the client code). As I already wrote in the proposal the new osc client will be based on python's argparse module and the Jinja2 template engine. Hi, Last week the label operations API was finalized merged upstream to util-linux. Some minor design choices were discussed on the mailing list and now everything is set. With the internal API now implemented, Petr and I decided that for the remaining of the GSoC program, we will focus on implementing GPT support for fdisk. During the weekend, the initial GPT header checks and probing was implemented, and we now check: signature, CRC checksums and LBA integrity, as required by the specs. Work done the last week: * Simple Ubuntu AppInstall support added to update-appstream-index (UAI) tool * Made UAI an auto-activated DBus-daemon * Updated parts of the PackageKit dummy backend to work with parallelization * Finished the last pieces of parallelization support, preparing it for merge * Lots of bugfixes everywhere * Started writing unit-tests for parallelization * Set up Fedora VM Todo this week: * Do everything required to get parallelization merged into master until Friday * More SC testing on non-Debian-based distros * Adjust the SC to use UAI * Install OpenSUSE VM * Probably first tests with the OpenSUSE AppStream data That's it for now, as always if you have questions, feel free to ask! I am still having issues accessing the Forums. I dump my opensuse and novell cookies every time I encounter issues This is the latest error message "No data received Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data." "Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data." I am about ready to completely give up. Are these issues ever going to be fully addressed? Here is the error message I got trying to follow a link that was to a forum response "Duplicate headers received from server The response from the server contained duplicate headers. This problem is generally the result of a misconfigured website or proxy. Only the website or proxy administrator can fix this issue. Error 350 (net::ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_LOCATION): Multiple distinct Location headers received. This is disallowed to protect against HTTP response splitting attacks." Hi! it's me again, now nearly exam-complete and with much more time to work on my GSoC project. So, what has been done the last two weeks? * More adjustments on the Software Center, e.g. AXI doesn't get loaded anymore on non-Debian systems, also PackageKit access is much better now. * Started a new project: Update-AppStream-Index[1]. UAI is a small DBus-activated daemon which is responsible for building the AppStream Xapian database from XML files, Debian DEP-11 metadata or Ubuntu AppInstall. Right now, only the XML stuff (which is delivered by the AppStream-supporting distribution) is supported. * More changes on PackageKit, some additional work on my parallel-processing patch Next is changing the PackageKit dummy backend, so I can test parallel transactuions easily. After that, my parallelization patch will be reviewed, changed and accepted (hopefully ^^). Then I'll have to make more improvements on UAI and the SC. That's it :-) I'll blog about it again as soon as there are some pretty pictures to see. Hi, here's a small summary of the 9th (coding) week. Last week I worked on the fetcher and cache manager code. In order to support all features some of the existing classes had to be enhanced with some more parameters. Done: * cache manager code * BinaryList class supports view=cpio * RORemoteFile class supports lazy_open parameter (by default the file is opened lazily that is when a read request is issued) (for the fetcher code we use lazy_open=False) * minor changes in the httprequest module (AbstractHTTPRequest supports the same query parameter more than once) The fetcher code is more or less done (not yet committed) and will be finished by friday evening (I've some exams this week...). Hi, In continuation to a previous post to the mailing list, I would again like to request for some server space to test the upstream tracker project. At this point in time, I think there is sufficient progress to put the project online and receive a few user inputs so that we can fix a few bugs that may be found and progress. A small VM would be enough. If there is anyone in particular i should contact, it would be great if someone could let me know. A progress summary is attached. What's done: • Rails web interface for user inputs and displaying errors. • REST interface to access data. • Updated python backend scripts to handle version finding in the backend. • search feature and disambiguation page on the web interface for easily searching records to avoid duplicate record addition. • partial support for custom URLs. What's to be done: • complete custom URL support (Almost over) • add support to undo changes to records updated by users. [opensuse-project] Unity and openSUSE

Hi all, Despite I should've be posting on this list, I will open an exception for something that I've invested a lot of time in the past (and time proven Vincent to be wise), but there's this 'Unity' thing that should be scrapped. I've recently handed GNOME:Ayatana to someone to keep the work, but the direction that the project is taken doesn't please me and I would like to become 'plan B' on this issue. As some people know I also maintain a few packages on Fedora and I've also became an EPEL Packager. I've seen a message in which the author (the person I gave GNOME:Ayatana to) claiming he moved to Fedora. I've removed myself from GNOME:Ayatana after seeing xorg components and compilers being added to the repo amongst other things. I can take back Unity considering that: 1) I've spoken to Ken VanDine from Canonical and currently only the menu proxy isn't upstreamed; 2) I've spoken to Matthias Clasen from Red Hat regarding GTK+ and menu proxies, I was informed that they are working with Canonical to move everything go GMenus; 3) The code has portability issues to GCC4.7; 4) Jeff Spaleta is moving in Fedora to help with the code ports and moving Unity to Fedora; 5) We need to bring compiz back. 6) An aditional patch is required on X, I supposed this will be upstreamed by Fedora soon. This are the only real issues that the port faces for deployment; I'm familiar with most of the components (except Compiz), we have someone working on Compiz, which should be nice. Now, I'm willing to pick up my former work and make a push for this, but I will need help, mainly with: 1) Fixing code for GCC4.7 (or I can wait for Fedora to do the work and then rebase the patches); 2) Reviews (prefer someone from the GNOME Team to do them, as they are to the best of my knowledge the tighter ones, and thats how I like it); I'm in for taking this seriously (which means I will drop MATE). Aditionally since GNOME:Ayatana has a lot of crazy stuff, I don't even want to get close to it (though I need to copy packages); I need also a 'Unity' namespace on OBS for this. If OBS can take EC2 build hosts, I can donate 1 or 2 build hosts for this project alone if that helps. Anyone who can help me overcomming the gcc4.7 is available ? For me this is a race, and it's the only way I get enough motivation to run against time and make this happen in real time. I have 2 free weeks in August (other two I will be away) to make this into a usable state. --- If you have no real interesting in helping in this, please don't polute this thread. As many of you know, I’ve been working hard to get ready for the first ever openSUSE conference in North America, the openSUSE Summit (http://summit.opensuse.org) We still have a lot of work to do before the big event in Orlando from September 21-23. Across the big pond, similar efforts are underway for our annual openSUSE Conference to be held in Prague in October. (http://conference.opensuse.org.) Michal Hrusecky has been working diligently with his team to make that conference as awesome as ever. Earlier today, Michal and I had a conversation. We agreed we need to move forth on getting an app ready for both events. It seems silly for each of our teams to find someone to develop an app. Why two stones for one bird? Right? So we’re putting out the call now for anyone who has an interest in creating or enhancing existing phone app that covers the conference program and all activities happening around the conference. Here’s some details: * We had an app for Android for last year’s openSUSE Conference. The source is here. (https://github.com/digitaltom/OSCFahrplan) * We did not have an app for iPhone. As geeky as we are, there are a number of people out there that carry iPhones. * The apps are meant to reduce paper and increase communication to our attendees * Ideally, the app would list non–Program events, such as parties and other things going on. * Ideally, the app would update periodically for any program changes * Ideally, the app is capable of receiving announcements throughout the conference. * There probably needs to be two separate apps, one for each conference. * You can reuse the existing source or develop from scratch. A “Dream App” would be cool. * I personally would like to see some increased a11y features (like zooming, etc.) * We might be interested in allowing users to switch to different language versions within the app. If you’re interested and have the skills, please reach out to me and Michal and we’ll all work together to make this an awesome tool to enhance our attendees’ experience. Hi, here's a small summary of the 8th (coding) week. The last days I was working on getting build support into the osc2 library. I just checked in a BuildInfo and Builder class (+ testcases). The 12.2 Release Notes ask if the entry "initialising Graphics with KMS" is still needed?". Given bug 768638, the Release Notes need to state that Nvidia graphics cards may cause udev errors and prevent the distribution DVD, CD etc starting up correctly. [opensuse-project] GSoC - Upstream Tracker - Request for Infrastructure/Server Space

Hi, With the midterm over and all the basic features implemented, i think it is the right time to host the project and start getting user inputs and user feedbacks. For this, i would like to request for some server space to host mainly, a small rails web interface. A VM would be more than sufficient, i guess. Also, i would like to summarize what's been going on for the last one and a half months in brief. • Rails web interface for user inputs and displaying errors. • REST interface to access data. • Updated python backend scripts to handle version finding in the backend. • search feature and disambiguation page on the web interface for easily searching records to avoid duplicate record addition. • partial support for custom URLs. What's to be done: • complete custom URL support • add support to undo changes to records updated by users. This will be available only to site admins. • DEHS import support after custom URL support is complete. Hence, I feel that if we could start collecting or rather crowd sourcing records, we would be able to find and tweak bugs and also be able to test the new upcoming features such as DEHS import. This patchset includes coding style fixes, removal of obsolete calls / methods as well as a test file implementing a simple test case to check that the file works as expected. Work currently undergoing: Creating a file to document the tst_ inrface of the test library to be uploaded in github's documentation pages as well as cleaning up/fixing a few more files from the tst_ inteface. Hi, we are running a computer pool for students with 48 machines on openSUSE 12.1. Ususally we try to install "almost everything" except software that is really annoying when $HOME is on NFS (e.g. beagle in former times). In older times we used autoyast to install a new version of openSUSE. But autoyast is just taking too long to install such a long list of software, and when you forget about a small thing, the turnaround time with such a big number of packages to install is too long. So we switched to autoyast and images (tar.gz method) for new machines (or new harddisks) and zypper dup for upgrading on working machines to new releases. These upgrades take place in the break between semesters. zypper dup usually works great. But somehow from 11.4 to 12.1 the update-alternative files for java were messed up resulting in a non-working java plugin for browsers. Found out by accident last week. Since our university uses Novell iprint for charging the students for printouts, we had to find out, that cups 1.5 does not work with iprint client. And so we had to build cups 1.4 for openSUSE 12.1. Printing seems to be one of the most complicated problems in universe ;) Students love n-up printing to save money. But somehow this seems to confuse printers from all kinds of different manufacturers (HP, Lexmark, Sharp). There is also no clear statement how to do it right, because for some PDFs you better use n-up printing from acroread and for others you can only use okular and cups n-up printing. Failure of printing "the right way" (TM) will result in hanging or resetting the printer. Since the machines are administered by central root, we disable NetworkManager, Update Notifications, and so on. Bad thing is, this changes from release to release, and we have to consider all desktop flavours (KDE, Gnome, LXDE, ...). For updates we use the automatic online update. Problem here was: SuSEconfig is not run. But this problem decreases, since SuSEconfig does less from release to release. Another thing I'm not quite sure about is: when e.g. openssl library is updated, a lot of services are affected (zypper ps can tell you), but the services are not restarted automatically. Since our machine run rather long (until next kernel update or crash or power plug pulled) they only get restarted when we do a zypper ps manually and either restart services manually or reboot. Well this should not be necessary, but I'd feel better if zypper ps shows nothing. To change the configuration on all machines, we usually copy the configuration file(s) to all machines and restart the service. We have scripts using SSH with authorized_keys for that. Problem is, if a machine is not online, it does not get the change and one must remember to change it, when the machine comes back. If there is a better solution, please let me know. Hi, The last week has not been very eventful as I had to shift to Singapore from India for higher studies. But there have been a few changes. The major work pertains to supporting custom regex in the URL input fields. A partial support for this is available, but is not sufficient. We would ideally like to have full regex support and this is the main part of the project I am currently working on. Apart from this, support to track sourceforge hosted projects has been added. Hi, To begin, it's worth summarizing were fdisk currently stands as per gsoc tasks. Up to this point a good part of the API is now established and implemented - with the device, MBR, geometry and topology information already upstream. For the next few weeks the label specific disk operations will be implemented. There are still a few details as to the design, specially keeping in mind that it must be generic and labels operations often aren't. Specifically, this week the label probing logic is being written and will be sent for review as soon as possible. Hi here's a small summary of the 6th (coding) week. Last week I continued working on the build module and developed a concept for the package fetcher (and discussed some parts with darix:) ). The main idea is to modularize the fetcher code, verify code etc. Thus we have a fetcher class which takes care of retrieving the packages. The fetcher class utilizes a "cache manager" which takes care of storing the fetched packages on the filesystem. The goal is that at some point in time one can exchange the "simple" cache manager with a more "clever" cache manager (which for instance cleans up the cache from time to time or only allows exactly one version of a package in the cache etc.). In order to achieve this no code in the fetcher has to be touched - instead it's sufficient to pass a different cache manager object to the fetcher. Additionally the fetcher provides some hooks like pre, pre_fetch, post_fetch and post.
