Howdy! With the end of the GSoC 2011 also our PooS special ends for first time. So, I´m searching again for "normal" people now! That means, everybody who´s thinking he or she would fit in, just need to mail me and ask for an interview (otherwise, I will mail people.) Actually, I wanted to release an interview with Chuck after the GSoC periode, but I never get something from him back (or? If so, please correct me and send it again, I´m sorry...) > New people So, I´m searching for new people who wants to get interviewed. So, *please* don´t be shy and mail me. I´m planning to do one interview per week, so that the weekly news guys could use it in their weekly update. > New questions A few months ago, we had a discussion about the questions that been asked on the interviews. Hey all, So the Zentrifuge location is a 'creative and open space' which also means it's quite empty right now... We are supposed to lighten up the place with our energetic presence :D To help with that, we need EVERYONE who is available on saturday to help make it pretty. We've got a bunch of $$$ and a van - and empty rooms with room for imagination. Who helps us buy stuff, bring it to the conference, then help carry beanbags, hang up posters, put down potted plants and more things like that to make it work for oSC?!? We really need some help with that, so anyone... please? It'd be nice if you let us know if you can help, but even if you don't - just show up saturday as early as possible (not before 10, of course) and help us cary stuff around :D /The conf team

FYI, most SUSE employees - including myself - have changed their emailaddresses which they use in openFATE and bugzilla from @novell.com to @suse.com. Btw. I still read emails on all accounts, this change is just for adding anybody manually to an openFATE request or bugzilla report. A sidenote: For lizards and news.opensuse.org, the emailaddress is the key for authentification. [opensuse-project] [gsoc] Archlinux backend for OBS final evaluations report

Hello, all! This mail is final evaluations report for my project. Unfortunately not all initial goals [from my proposal] were done due to my illness, but I have some results which I want to present. Overall "what is done": - Arch module for "build" which can: * parse PKGBUILDs and extract dependencies * parse .PKGINFO files from .pkg.tar.?z pakages and get info about it - Helper script, which gets repository metadata and prints information about packages in build corresponding format (package metadata parsing functions are also in arch module, so anyone can use them if needed) - Setup of Archlinux-specific build environment in init_buildsystem - Actual build in "build" script Now Archlinux backend is able to do _standalone_ builds. It's interesting, but it's not what we want. Of course I'll continue my work to fully integrate Archlinux support to OBS (independently of final evaluations results and after end of this GSoC). Now I plan to add support to libsatsolver [1] and integrate into OBS [2] (after polishing of the backend, see below). Some notes about current implementation: it's not ideal. I see some bugs with dependency tracking (maybe we need to improve common code used for all distros, don't sure). Also it lacks support of multi-package PKGBUILD's and repos with not official-like structure. See TODO for more information [3]. Code is still located in my personal repo on gitorious (I think it's not ready yet to be merged with opensuse offcial repo) [4]. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] End of GSoC report - Entomologist UI Changes.

Hi all, You can find the final report for my project at [0] or below although I do recommend going to the link as there are screenshots to go along with it :). I'd like to thank OpenSUSE for saying yes to my project and to thank my mentor Matt for being incredibly supportive and helpful throughout my project. I've learned a lot!. ---Report Text Below--- GSoC 2011 is now over and I feel it's time to have a summary of what has been implemented over the summer for Entomologist. To start, Entomologist was made to work correctly on OS X and Windows, there was little work needed for OS X but an installer was created for Windows (which took a bit of head scratching as Qt's SDK dependencies are a bit complicated on Windows). I don't have Screenshots of Windows at the moment as it's effort to boot into a non *Nix OS :P. The screenshots will all be on OpenSUSE partly as a way to celebrate the end of GSoC by thanking the community that said yes to my project and also because I miss Linux so so much after using Mac OS X as my only OS for a few weeks at a time. The first thing worked on once this was completed was adding tabs for each individual tracker. There is still some work going on here that I'm no longer helping with but it was the start of a cleaner interface and will hopefully make viewing trackers easier. The New Comments Dialog was added for ease of use, the current expanding panel seemed very dodgy as a way of adding comments, sometimes splitting a users focus is a good thing. The New Comments Dialog took longer than I expected to implement because I was still learning the Entomologist code base. But I think this addition made me feel comfortable with the code base as a whole. The To Do List Dialog was the primary component for much of my GSoC as it was something I thought was really cool to implement and it could be expanded upon so much in future. The initial drag and drop stuff threw me because I have never had to do drag and drop between widgets before and because I'd never used Qt that much before. All the work prior to this was pretty simplistic and my acquaintance with Qt wasn't an issue but I had to start learning how to wield Qt better for the To Do List dialog. The QDateEdit was awkward to implement here, QTreeWidgets aren't designed for this level of customization as it's assumed you will use a Model but apart from the QDateEdit a model was superfluous to my needs. With guidance from my mentor I implemented an Item Delegate that did the trick and because Qt is so very well designed adding a calendar to the DateEdit was simple so now if you click on the date edit it will pull up a calendar to select from. The Checkbox was strange, I had found a way of adding my own widgets to QTreeWidgets but my mentor pointed out that you can just tell a column to become a checkbox without adding a widget. Problem simplified and solved. The Add New Service Dialog was the first thing I added once I'd completed the basic To Do List as I was going to add the ability to sync to external cloud calendar/task services. The first target for this was Remember The Milk as this seems to be the most popular one currently but Google Tasks and Generic WebDAV are to be added as soon as I can get them working!. The Preferences dialog is just a global dialog for seeing what services you have configured and adding a new one etc. The export dialog lets you select the services you want to sync too be it a single list or all the lists. The integration of Remember The Milk itself was a nightmare, I'd never had to use a Web API before, I'd never used REST, I'd never used a Network connection inside an application. A lot of 'never used' but I think I've managed to learn a lot and hopefully in future I won't end up going crazy when I have to implement a state machine again :). I've tried to make it as generic as possible so adding new services isn't that hard but I still have a lot of work to do to finish it. I'm not thrilled that I haven't finished in time for the deadline but as my mentor said "reality tends to turn most deadlines into jokes, in my experience". Wise words :). I've had fun working on this and I'm going to carry on working on it to see my project reach its completion. Last year I worked on a GSoC project but I didn't feel like anything I did was worthwhile and the utility of the project started to fade on me. This year I feel much happier and I feel like I've really learned a lot. My C++ skills were basic before the summer, My C and Java skills were far better but now I think I'm much stronger with C++ and it's piqued my interest in learning more C++ even though before starting this project I'd classified C++ as "C with objects" there are some really core differences that shouldn't be discarded. Hi all, You can find my report at [0] and below. I'm sorry that the report is late but I've been fighting with trying to get the code I've written to work!. ---- Report Text ------ The past week has been a killer, trying to get Remember the Milk to work correctly has been much much harder than I ever thought it would be. After hours of prodding and hair pulling the work I've put in is starting to take shape but much, much later than I had planned. It looks like the soft pencils down date was an ambitious estimate to having finished the project but aside from a few issues with duplication that I haven't tracked down yet it works. I have to implement a new way of storing the service ids assigned to tasks that are inserted because right now we just get tasks from the service and compare. If the user ever changes the name this will obviously break and isn't the most efficient way of storing multiple ids. I have until Friday to finish the work and if all things go well then I hope to have RTM and Google Tasks finished with a good chunk of the Generic WebDAV feature integrated, if I don't manage the Generic WebDAV feature then I don't know what I'll do as it is one I want to include in the release. Lesson learned: Web service APIs can drive you crazy especially if you mix it with asynchronous network connections (which I've never had to use before). Hello my friends, After discussion with some friends of mine who run their business, a question came up. Well, live dvd is OK for a small business to cover the office needs but there's a need for some special software such as ERP or financial or accountant software. So, as we have openSUSE medical and openSUSE LiFE, is it possible to cover also some small businesses? Here in Greece we have a goal to do something with the medical for starters (since I'm more familiar with it). Another idea that came up to me, is to create another remastered distro based on openSUSE with some CAD software. There might be some on SUSE Studio but need a team that will support them. Hi all, I am a long time opensuse user and have been using Tumbleweed for quite some time and liking it. I frequently run powertop to enable configurations to conserve the battery life of my laptop. I always get this suggestion from powertop: " Suggestion: Enable the CONFIG_INOTIFY kernel configuration option. This option allows programs to wait for changes in files and directories instead of having to poll for these changes " Would it be possible to have the repo kernel package built with the above configuration enabled ? I know that I can do it locally and run the custom kernel. It feels strange that there are only 2 weeks remaining of GSoC, Summer doesn't feel like it happened much in the UK. ----- Report Text ------- This week I've been working at getting Remember the Milk integration finished. Right now Lists can be added to Remember the Milk and I'm in the middle of implementing update/delete functionality. It has been a hard week as I've never had to use a web based API before and the Remember the Milk one doesn't seem like the easiest to get to grips with (its beta form is probably indicative of this). The main time consumer now is getting the update/delete functionality which isn't an issue with Remember The Milks API but one of trying to find the right solution that is generic enough to be used with other services so I avoid large chunks of code that are specific to a single service. For the final week I will continue working on integrating Remember the Milk,Google Calendar and WebDAV and over the remaining 10 days I will try and get these services fully integrated. The final week of GSoC will hopefully be spent on preparing a 1.0 release and any code addition will be kept to a minimum (with a hope that there won't be any outside of merging). [opensuse-project] [gsoc] Test Suite for btrfs - Weekly Update

Hello, This is a summary of the work that I did in the last week.(Week # 10) The test no. 256 was modified to add support for memory mapped i/o operations. Thus, now in the test the files are created using both direct i/o as well as memory mapped i/o. A new test, test no. 257 was added which handles large file creation and modification of upto 1GB. Both the tests 256 and 257 were modified to handle any snapshot supported generic file system. Hello, First of all, I'm sorry for the large delay on updating my previous report. I've spent most of the time improving the performance of the classes, adding multiple profiles support, and on styling the admin, profile and other pages. I have also done performance testing, having responses averaging 50ms/request response times on a testing server, with 200 concurrent requests. I expect higher performance on a deployment configuration. on the To Do List is: Creating at least an offline submitting client (either GTK or QT). Finishing the administrative pages configurations. Hi everyone, You can find the report at [0] and below in plain text. Not much to really talk about in-depth again this week but once these features are integrated I will try going through them as much as possible. ---- Report Text ----- This week has involved trying to get the UI in place for ToDo List exporting/configuration. The work should now be finished and I’ve begun trying to implement Remember the Milk exporting which is made a bit complicated by how they accept API requests but I hope to have this finished as soon as possible. I don’t really have that much to talk about this week as nothing huge has changed but I will keep working on integrating the services. What I hope to achieve is Google Calendar, Remember The Milk and WebDAV server integration by the Soft Pencils Down Date, which I believe is the 19th of August. I think it’s perfectly achievable to get these features to a finished state by then and I’ll continue working on having them integrated. As I’ve previously mentioned I would like to use the final week as a time to merge and test everything to try and uncover any bugs I’ve missed whilst adding these features. Hi people 12.1 will be out on November and November is closer that you can imagine when it comes to the amount of work that should be done by then. So in order to reach out I propose to repeat Collaboration days. We made great amount of work there and with great quality. We had 3 collaboration days: 1 for ambassadors(Ambassador Support Review) 1 for Marketing(Marketing Materials Review) 1 for PR and Social Media (PR and Social Media Review) So in order for this to be a reality we need people to organize this. - Firstly we need people to volunteer themselves for be online on IRC for at least 12 hours as moderators for those days. In order for everybody around the Globe to attend we make the Collaboration days a 24 hour Event. I am of course in for the first 12 hour stand for ambassadors day. - We need people to organize and create the wiki pages that we will need about the collaboration days - We need all of you to participate on those days because as previous Collaboration days proved, anybody can help no matter how experienced. Last but not least, it is important to do that before the Marketing Hackfest that is planned for 15th and 16th of September, so that we could use the Collaboration days achievements there and plan a better marketing campaign. Hi, I am Aditya Dani, selected for GSoC through OpenSUSE. I would like to give a summary of the progress in my GSoC project so far. Following is the short introduction of my project. To create a test suite for advanced feature of btrfs such as snapshot. Currently the xfs test suite is used to validate the base functionality of btrfs. The same has been extended to test btrfs-specific functions like snapshot creation/deletion, balancing and relocation. Tasks Completed * Added a generic test case 256 in the xfstest suite to test btrfs snapshot utility. * Generated Create Test: tests creation of files with snapshot being taken. * Generated Write Test: tests writing random data into those files. * Generated Delete Test: tests removing those files. * Generated Restore Test: restore data in the filesystem from the snapshot. * Moved the file system specific implementaions of snapshot commands to the new file common.snapshot pertaining to the standards of xfstests. * Added a check script support to the test 256. * Generated golden output file i.e. 256.out as recommended by the xfstests to run the check script routine correctly. * Added support to the test 256 for other snapshot supported file systems like ext4dev(ext4 with snapshots) Tasks to be Done * Generate tests that would create/delete large files in the snapshot supported file systems. * Generate tests to check the freeze/unfreeze race conditions in file systems. * Generate test cases to check concurrent operations that take place on the file system as well as snapshot data/metadata. Also, we have maintained a wiki page[0] that contains a simple explanation of how to run generic test cases in the xfstest suite. Also it contains separate section for running the snapshot test i.e. test 256. You can check out the code at [1]. [opensuse-project] Volunteers needed for the conference

Hey Peepz, as you know, the third international openSUSE Conference is happening in a couple of weeks from now, you already should be registered! For the organization team this means that we are really picking up pace now and start to feel dizzy. One of the reasons for that is that we are short on helping hands. We especially miss “boots on the ground“, we need your help! Being a boot on the ground means we need people to help us at the conference in September. There is no special knowledge about the location or other details needed. So far we have 5 tasks where we desperately need people to help out. Venue setup, Registration Desk, Session Chairs and the Snack Bar. Read on to learn how you can contribute to the success of the conference. Venue Setup The Zentrifuge is not an event location in the classical sense so we have to do a lot of setup tasks the days before the conference starts. For instance we need to make sure that the seminar rooms have enough chairs, multisockets and a working projector. We also need to setup the lounge with sofas, equip the Beergarden with tables, distribute waste bins and so on and so on. Most of this we will need to do on Friday/Saturday before the conference and it’s a lot of physical labor. If you can help with this please lets us know on the volunteers page[1] or drop us a mail at opensuse-conference(a)opensuse.org. The Registration Desk At the conference, every morning from 9:00 to 10:30, we will have a registration desk. It will handle the registration of new visitors, distribution of info materials and answering of general questions and such. We need two people per day to man this desk during the conference. On Sunday, as it’s the first day, it better be three! If you can help with this please lets us know on the volunteers page[1] or drop us a mail at opensuse-conference(a)opensuse.org. Session Chair We have two floors in the Zentrifuge and both have a main room and some smaller rooms for workshops and birds of a feather sessions. For both floors we need two people per day to be a chair for the sessions that will take place. Being a chair means that you introduce the next presenter, make sure the sessions stick to the schedule and answer all questions speakers might have. This task takes a bit of experience as speaker/moderator to make the introductions, a wristwatch and, ideally, some technical knowledge with projectors/laptops. If you can help with this please lets us know on the volunteers page[1] or drop us a mail at opensuse-conference(a)opensuse.org. The Snack Bar This year we will run our own snack bar at the venue. The organization team has already seen to that foods and drinks are available and that we have a fully equipped snack bar ready. Now we need people that help us to man the snack bar to sell, sell, sell. You would need to sell snacks and drinks, make sure that we don’t run out and count the moneys! If you can help with this please lets us know on the volunteers page or drop us a mail at opensuse-conference(a)opensuse.org. Evening Manager and Lock Service One nice side effect of the Zentrifuge not being a classical event location is that we will have very long opening hours. People can continue to collaborate and don’t have to leave the place until 23:00. But this also means that we have to have at least one person per day that makes sure it doesn’t get to wild and that closes everything in the night. Hi, here's a small summary of the 10th (coding) week. This week I spent most of my time with working on the package working copy class' commit method. This also involved some code refactoring. Basically commit and update are handled as "transactions" and all relevant transaction data is stored in a single xml file (pkg/.osc/_transaction/state).
