Hi all,
April 16-17 in Antwerp, Belgium, the Linux Open Administration Days will
take place. This free event offers a chance for LPI certification as
well as meeting and talking to linux sysadmins. There is a call for
presentations here: http://www.loadays.org/content/call-presentations
If you want to go and give a talk there about openSUSE tech - that's be
awesome. If you can't afford to go there due to travel or hotel costs,
let me know, we might be able to work something out ;-)
cheers,
Jos
Hi,
I'm working on the command line client for Suse Studio(ssc) project as
part of GSOC 2011. I'll be posting weekly updates of the project on my
blog [1]. There isn't much to check out now but in the coming weeks
please do check in and leave feedback.
Thank You.

Hi everyone,
I'm happy and a bit late to announce that my proposal, PackageKit and
AppStream integration for Software Center has been accepted as a
openSUSE GSoC project this summer.
I'm planning to work incrementally, first by getting rid of ubuntu
specific bits in s-c, then by abstracting backend classes, wrapping
the pk API, and then adding new code/features, as described here:
http://swarm.cs.pub.ro/~alexef/gsoc/proposal.html
Your feedback is welcome!

Hello,
I'm applying at this year's GSoC to work on the bug reporting tool [0]. I've
made my list of features to implement but, before I finalized my proposal,
I thought it would be a good idea to ask you, guys:
Is there's any particular feature that you wish to find in the openSUSE bug
reporting tool?
Thank you!

Hi,
(let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-))
The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that
the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of
the summer. That's $500 per student.
A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the
money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel
is best", and this mail is about the plan.
As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the
openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would
like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a
mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the
Foundation for that.
The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel
close to, and I have two candidates in mind:
- the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/): it's a
really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see
http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/), and those projects help
make openSUSE a great project.
- the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/): it's one of the
biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more
visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would
welcome this to secure their budget.
Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google
for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the
money where it can make a difference today.
Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better
suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it,
just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot
receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to
buy stuff for openSUSE.
Pavol and I will take the final decision since we are the GSoC admins
for openSUSE.
Thanks,
Vincent

We had a couple of discussions in the past about how to improve the openSUSE
trademark guidelines (see e.g.
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Trademark_guidelines or
https://features.opensuse.org/311039). One of the main issues with the current
guidelines is that it's very strict about derivatives, and doesn't easily
allow people using openSUSE as a base for their own systems, to keep a visible
association with openSUSE.
So attached is a proposal how to adapt the trademark guidelines and provide a
better solution to this issue. It also contains a few smaller clarifications.
It's based on the input I was able to gather from the Wiki, openFATE, mailing
lists and some personal feedback. It's a draft, so feedback is welcome.
The central change is to allow people to create variants of openSUSE and use a
"Based on openSUSE" branding under more liberal conditions than now. We would
provide a specific branding for that, which keeps the relation to openSUSE,
but is done in a way to not be confused with the branding of the official
openSUSE distribution. Technically this would be a set of branding packages,
which can be used instead of the default branding of the official
distribution.
Please let me know, if there is additional feedback on the proposed changes,
so we can incorporate that, and then move forward with getting the needed
approvals to officially adopt the improved guidelines. In parallel to that we
can look into doing the proposed branding packages.
Attached is the proposed text for the revised guidelines, and the diff to the
current official version.

Hello, I posted my first update on this year's GSOC project, an ICC
Profiles Repository.
Feel free to check
http://www.sebastianoliva.com/en/2011/05/gsoc-week-1/ and to post your
feedback or direct it to my e-mail.
I might not be able to post my updates next week, so I apologize in
advance. I have already contacted my mentor regarding that.
Greetings,
Sebastian

Hi,
this is a short summary of this week:
* published proposal of the new user interface:
we got some really constructive feedback (see [1])
The next task is to create model classes which represent a project,
package, request etc. This way we can modify the package metadata
(for instance) in a object orientated manner. Our plan is to write
tests first and afterwards we start with the implementation (TDD).

Sounds great! Do you (or someone other) have a list of our students, so
that I can easier contact them? I will publish the interview with Jeff
Mahoney as soon as possible and try to contact some students in the next
time.
I cc´ed opensuse-project and if anyone is interesting in interviewing
some students, just goahead and do your interviews! If it´s necessary, I
will help you coordinating it on this thread. ;)
I published the questions here:
http://en.opensuse.org/People_of_openSUSE_question_sheet
and can make a cross to my to-do-list now, because I wanted to do it so
many times before but ever forget it...
Have fun!
