Hi all, Below is the text of my fist weekly report which you can also find at my blog[1]. It's been a quiet first week but hopefully things will get more interesting very soon!. -----------Report Text---------- As I’ve posted previously I’ll be working on Entomologist over the Summer as part of the Google Summer of Code. My primary aim is to redesign the UI to make it much more usable and much nicer to look at. These posts are going to be once a week summaries of what I’ve gotten up to in that week and things to look out for. This week started later than it should have because of exams so I started on Tuesday instead of Monday. The first thing I attempted to work on was keyboard shortcuts for each individual platform. It took me a couple of hours to get all of the shortcuts working as qt didn’t make it obvious that it had switched cmd for ctrl on Mac OS X making me think the shortcuts I’d created were not working on that platform (it turns out they did!). After finishing up the primary shortcuts and abandoning a more complicated one (I wanted to make it possible to add a comment to a bug that had been highlighted in the list) I called it a day. On Wednesday I focused on trying to get the Mac OS X port to work and had some friends with Macs test it for me. After a few issues that needed resolution (primarily the debug writer causing the application to segfault, which Matt Barringer spotted/fixed for me). Thursday was also spent getting the Mac OS X port to work correctly which has now been bundled into a .dmg. Today, Friday, I’ve been working on the Windows port, which has mainly involved ifdefing out fcntl.h as a single instance check. There have been some issues with how it builds on Windows and I’m still working on the packaging aspect of it. It will be finished before Monday and hopefully before the end of this evening. Summary of this week: -Keyboard Shortcuts added to Entomologist that work on all platforms (thank you qt for being helpful!) -Entomologist ported to Mac OS X as a .dmg/.app bundle with correct icons etc. -Entomologist nearly ported to Windows This has been a quieter week which has been useful in getting into things slowly, especially after being exhausted from exams/being ill. I’m very much on target with my timeline and hopefully there will be no deviation from it in the coming weeks. [opensuse-project] [gsoc] Archlinux backend for Open Build Service, week 1

Hi, all! This is my first week results. I haven't a blog yet (maybe I'll setup it next week), so writing here. This week was not so efficient as I want, but I've realised a "parse" function in Arch part [1], which allows us to extract build dependencies from PKGBUILD's. Function is safe (in Archlinux, package build scripts "sources" PKGBUILD's, so it can be dangerous). No any consolidation of code for now. I prefer to make a code so verbose as it can be at first time, and make it compact and beautiful at last steps. You can take a look at my work in my gitorious repo [2]. [opensuse-project] announcing rename of openSUSE Build Service to Open Build Service

Hi all, The openSUSE Build Service Team has decided to rename its cutting-edge packaging- and distribution build technology to Open Build Service. The new name, while maintaining the well-known OBS acronym, signals its open and cross-distribution nature. The newe website will be openbuildservice.org and is already up. The announcement can be found on http://news.opensuse.org/2011/05/26/opensuse-renames-obs/ On a second note, SUSE will start to provide OBS Developer Services starting from the 2.3 release onwards. It offers support for configuration and setup as well as code fixes. SUSE will be working with partners to enable and back them to offer implementation and consulting services. [opensuse-project] decisions for the CfP comittee!

Hi all, We need some decisions soon on a few things! Questions: - do we a _separate announcement_ of the conf & 1-2 days later the CfP or all in one? Currently we have two texts: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Announcing_openSUSE_conference_2011 and http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference_Planning_2011_CfP I will publish both (we need images from the location and/or a nice logo btw) unless someone is willing to integrate them so we can have one article. Deadline: Sunday. - Theme: the marketeers have to come up with a theme before sunday night or we use what we already have: rwx^3. Robert has made some nice graphics for that already. - Schedule. Cornelius proposed to only schedule talks and workshops and provide a wiki page for the BOF's. It would need a CfP member stepping up however to feel responsible and make sure no conflicts arise. I'm not sure about this whole idea as we might have too many sessions and no quality control this way. How about we get up a list where you can add a BoF you want to do, keep that open until 2 weeks before the conf, schedule then and keep 20% open for AT the conference. So we have quality control, can do something about redundancy but also schedule it smart, for example in topical rooms or so... Decision Deadline: tuesday. The theme and the announcement part have fallbacks for me: if nobody cares, I'll just do whatever I feel like ;-) The schedule I'd rather not decide on my own but if there are no sensible suggestions and opinions until Tuesday I'll make something up :D Cheers, Jos

[opensuse-project] [GSoC] Coding period has started!

Hi all, Yesterday was the beginning of the coding period for the Google Summer of Code. Our 16 students are now hopefully all fully focused on delivering some amazing results for their project! We've asked them to write weekly reports, that will be sent on this list so everyone can follow the progress of all the projects (some students might choose to post links to blog posts, since a blog post can have a much richer formatting). This will start at the end of this week.
