Hi,
While I would not want to discourage anyone from picking this up - it is a
worthwhile goal. I think it is instructive to see what happened to :
http://fedoralegacy.org/
I did not participate in that project, but had to admin a few servers running
old versions of RH and FC until they could be migrated to newer hardware and
a fresh OS. Some comments:
Even with the participation of some RH staff, there were only a few dedicated
folks to help with packaging and testing.
Backporting some fixes in increasingly older versions can be difficult and you
can have regressions.
From what I observed, the weakest link was testing, in that is was hard get
people to test on a variety of systems and platforms.
Frankly, while I really did appreciate the legacy teams effort's applying
updates, it could be a bit scary knowing how little testing sometimes was
done to important bits (mySQL, Apache, PHP and kernels). Especially, when the
server is not onsite. Having a choice of applying a possibly botched update
or leaving it unpatched is not a happy one.
I'm not sure how much support would come from Novell, but I would not be
surprised to learn backporting fixes is a major consumer of engineering
resources. I seriously doubt this could be done without some major push from
Novell.
That said, while it might not be a happy choice for all, if you need long term
support, SLES/SLED is the way to go. It is not free, but I can say my clients
are very satisfied and not one has dropped them for alternatives - even free
ones.
In sum, supporting this is more than just making some extra space on servers
and mirrors, it takes a serious effort by some folks who are above average in
packaging and understand security thoroughly - especially on the server side.
Just my humble 0.02,
Peter

Good news everyone!
Billy Juliani sent me beatiful design of countdown timers. I created PHP
code which prints numbers into them and the result can be seen here:
http://en.opensuse.org/Countdown . We hope you like it. Hyperlink now
points to http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap but I can change it to any
better page later. It would be great if someone took his/her time and
created a new wiki page - with a list of new killer features of 11.0 and
call for beta testers - information for community how to test beta releases.

Hi All,
I am a new member in this mailing list. I have some technical
questions about Remastering the OpenSUSE. I am wondering if I could
ask my questions here, or I have to join some specific mailing lists?
My current questions are around adding a new language support in Yast2
and changing the BootSplash in the INITRD of the Installation DVD.
Thanks,
Hamed

Yes, that's the one that's going to be used on countdown.o.o, though
we will also probably link to other countdown ideas as well.
Kind thoughts,

Shashank,
that is a very very very interesting initiative! Personally I am not sure I can help a lot here, but I'll do my best. First thing could be to discuss your ideas on a public mailing list, like in here, and make know people that you are organizing that (like you are doing). However I see that there are only 3 days left, not much time to change anything. So, one thing you could do is write a small report when the event is finished, with some pictures, and if you post it on http://techfreaks4u.com/123/ I will blog about that for sure.
good luck!

Respected Community Members,
We are group of students who deeply believe in principles of Open
Source, and in true spirit of freedom, we love to share our ideas /
knowledge with others .This is what motivated us to form a Linux user
group in our university (Jaypee University of Information
Technology,India), when we found out that our passion had caught on
with other students and people were taking interest in Open Source &
Linux in general. That was two years back.
After toiling for 2 years thence, we have been able to include our
events in our universities main Cultural Festival "Le Fiestus" only
this year. The events vary from "Hacking Challenges" to "Quiz"; though
small in number we expect the events to be more attractive and bigger
in upcoming years.
After Formation of Linux User Group, awareness of Open Source and
Linux in general has increased manifold, and we are taking small steps
toward complete shift towards Linux.
Due to popularity of Linux, our university decided to provide an
opt-in course to students for making students aware of Linux.
We are even trying to take this knowledge outside confines of our
university and make local computer vendor in our region sell Linux
laptops and Desktops.
All these factors contributed to what we see today in our university,
a healthy viewpoint of students towards Open Source without any
misconception, to further this cause the idea of organizing event in a
cultural fest was born, but without any prior organizing experience we
felt bit marooned.
More than fifty percent of our Linux users are OpenSuse users, that
made OpenSuse community natural choice for us to ask for help. We have
an open Request for OpenSuse Community and Linux community at large,
of helping us in our nascent steps of making Linux a natural concept
as freedom rather than just an alternative to Microsoft Windows.
