[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Pavol and I will take the final decision since we are the GSoC admins for openSUSE. Hi All, here are my answers: 1. Why are you running for the openSUSE board? (Some of you have covered this already.) Specifically - reform and change. * Helping the move to a charitable foundation. This should open up new sources of funding. * Embracing new users, and new technologies. Start a outreach program to get both more users, and companies involved in using the product set. 2. Clearly you care a lot about openSUSE and have contributed to the project. What do you think will you be able to add as a member of the board? * A fresh point of view, with a open perspective * Commercial experience - I've run various companies over the last 35 years. And what would be the opportunity cost, i.e., what might you not be able to do, or do less of, for openSUSE in that case? * I can devote to about 4-8 hours per week to the new role. * As far as my company is concerned, it will be counted as "training" ;) 3. What would you like the board to do differently / more / less of? * As "elected officials" the board has a duty to take decisions to ensure that the project both survives and thrives. 4. What are your thoughts on an openSUSE Foundation or similar structure? If positive, how would you address that practically and what, if any, role do you see for yourself in the way there? * I am specifically interested in moving to a foundation as soon as possible, to ensure the future growth of membership, projects and community. * I've already provided an initial report and wish to expand on it to drive this forward. 5. What are you biggest worries around / for openSUSE? (And how might we tackle those?) * Lack of pro-activity will cause the the project to wither. * Running it as a commercial/charity entity will reduce the chances of this occurring. Bonus question: 6. This may be my most difficult choice in an election as an openSUSE member so far. (A great problem to have, of course.) Here are some aspect I am curious to learn more about: 1. ALP Community WG workshop next week: Consuming community content in SUSE's ALP

Hello openSUSE! I'd like to invite you to a next Tuesday's (14:30 UTC) ALP Community *WG meeting where we'd like to start collecting ideas for how to consume community software in SUSE's ALP. Community Meeting/ALP WG: Week 47 (WG @ 14:30 UTC)

Hi all, There will be an ALP Work Group tomorrow at 14:30 UTC. This is an hour earlier than the normal time, but will last a little longer than the regular Tuesday time frame. This WG will look at high-level ideas and requirements in how to consume community software in SUSE's ALP. People attending this WG should join if they have run the ALP prototype. This is for those who have tried it or those who would just like to follow along. We don't want to be spending time explaining the basics of the system during this WG as we are aiming to have more focused discussions.
