[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. I just noticed today that the gmane.linux.suse.opensuse.user group is missing from gmane.org - did the project request the list be removed from gmane? Just wondering if it was intentional or if something went wrong somewhere. Hi All, We had a nice long discussion during the Project Meeting in IRC today, minutes are below: * Tumbleweed Feedback was given about the timing of the merger, the nature of the announcements, and the lack of a broader discussion in the Project before the decision to merge the two rolling releases. sysrich (Richard Brown) explained that these issues were caused by a desire to have the situation clear for Tumbleweed users before the release, mixed in with unavailability caused by travel surrounding openSUSE summit. sysrich apologised, accepted the feedback, and agreed that standard practices should have been followed like involving the News team before making the announcement and starting a discussion/heads up to the opensuse-factory mailinglist at the earliest opportunity. * AoB * News/Marketing Teams It was suggested that the News and Marketing Teams should be merged. Arguments against this include the fact that the whole point of the News team is to allow private news items to be discussed before they go public, whereas the Marketing team operate in the public. [opensuse-project] 13.2 Marketing Video Project

I was thinking of starting a video series on 13.2 when the Goldmaster becomes available. The idea being to set up a VM and give a video tour of the Installation etc. I was thinking it'd make sense to separate the videos; Installation & advanced YaST installer function>Introduction to GNOME 3.14 Shell with overview of design philosophy>in depth with GNOME applications and workflow>personal favorites, third party software, etc. I want to keep the voice over separate in order to allow other users to make localized sound tracks.I'd also need someone else to do the KDE video since I haven't used KDE in years. I'm also not especially familiar with VM and video capture from those, or what to really use for rudimentary video editing. Thoughts? Disclaimer: this is not a rant, is a call to arms. We are quite close to the release of openSUSE 13.2. Looking at the state of Beta1 and RC1, I trust it's going to be a great release from the technical point of view, compared to previous ones. But a release is much more than just the software, and the comparison with previous releases is not so bright in other areas. openSUSE 13.1 was a GREAT HIT in the marketing area. Just take a look to all we achieved at https://progress.opensuse.org/projects/opensuse-13-1-release/issues/gantt?s… An insane amount of work brilliantly executed, including the press kit (absolutely invaluable), the sneak peaks (raising excitement every week) and much more. But what about 13.2? We had to delay the release of the beta because of the lack of an announcement! And we only had a draft for the announcement of RC1 the very same morning that it was released. We should all be extremely grateful to Kostas for taking over in both cases and coming up with the announcements, grabbing the information, coordinating the people and making it happen. What if we all try to go back to the 13.1 situation (with people pushing the developers asking for changes and highlights to feed the marketing beast) instead of the current one (with developers pushing in the mailing list to have an announcement published)? Greetings.
