[opensuse-project] Dropping all java-1_6_0-sun packages?

After Oracle's announcement "Retiring the DLJ" [1][2][3] in Septenber 2011, it is no longer allowed to distribute the sun JRE packaged for distributions. Therefore I'd recommend to remove all java-sun packages from the OBS. Having the latest huge security issues with the sun-plugin in mind, it could be good to enforce a de-installation of all the old Java installations or at least the plugin - not to break servers requiring the original sun JRE/SDK. [opensuse-project] RFC: Naming 'borderline' a derivate of openSUSE 12.2

Hi all, As some are aware I've hammered down MATE (though it still a lot of polishing) for openSUSE; I'm make a small iso with Kiwi and I was planning to call it 'Borderline'. This is a pure openSUSE 12.2 without any changes which defaults to MATE and LightDM. The MATE implementation is upstream (with some tweaks done directly on mate packages so I don't have to follow the road of pain with branding) and is mainly the same used by openSUSE. In addition this will get: - Armored with all sort of codecs available (gstreamer/ffmpeg and friends (ex: libdvdcss2)); - Font Rendering through Infinality - Other stuff I might find interesting. Is openSUSE ok with the usage of 'borderline' for a derivative? Why I ask this is because 'borderline' is a mental disturbance and somehow rare, in a way close to bi-polarity. This is a cool metaphore :) (borderline-project.eu will come soon). While I don't get own branding, this will be 'based on openSUSE'. NM PS: Cool name! Just as a heads up for everyone: 1) Cinnamon has been moved to X11:Cinnamon and has the following repository layout: + X11:Cinnamon:GNOME34 - For GNOME 3.4 enabled systems + X11:Cinnamon:GNOME36 - For future GNOME 3.6 enabled systems + X11:Cinnamon:Factory - For Factory development if someday it becomes reliable 2) MATE Desktop has been moved for X11:MATE; Currenlty all 'base' packages are available, and we're missing only a few python bindings packages and some extras.Builds for the following platforms: + openSUSE 11.4 + openSUSE 12.1 + openSUSE 12.2 + Tumbleweed + Factory Regarding MATE Desktop, before considering Factory submissions (and this is pretty much something I want to see on openSUSE in the Future), there are few more things that are required: a) Packages need some reviewing from GNOME experienced people; b) Some packages need approval from SUSE Security Team regarding DBus services, PAM modules, etc (I will open Bug Report later on for this); c) Need deployment tests on all platforms; d) more fixes as broken stuff pops out. Borderline because it was originally considered to be on the 'border' of psychosis due to the presence of some pathological traits. There's some debate about the term, but it remains unchanged in DSM-V (the updated psychology diagnosis manual). The word 'borderline' by itself doesn't really imply the condition. It means on the edge between two things /border/outline/fringes and can be used in many contexts. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/borderline The 'of questionable nature or quality' definition is probably more of a concern than the psychological reference. Following the recent thread [1] on opensuse-project about obstacles to the community's use of our shared bugzilla instance, SUSE has started an internal assessment of how we can improve things for community users, contributors, employees and enterprise customers - in defiance of the "we can't touch that part of the infrastructure" meme. To this end, I'd like to gather here information about your requirements. Some things I've pulled out of "Bugzilla account creation" and other places are: * Easy sign up ** Minimal user information required * Familiar branding * Working integrated login with other project web apps * Community visibility of bugs in openSUSE reported against SLE * Performance * Relating bugs to packages and maintainers * Package<->Bug relation * OBS<->Bugzillazilla relation * Tooling (eg Entomologist, integrated bug reporters like Dr Konqi) If you have any comments on these or on other topics, please add them here. reference the web page to download the distro--which contains a section heading reading "Verify your download (optional, for experts)" the wording has been this way for a LONG time, but in my opinion it should be reconsidered for change to: "Verify your download before use" after all, the 'experts' already know verification is important and only optional if one doesn't care how much time is wasted trying to install a garbage iso! there is a current forum thread <http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=477953> which reminded me this really ought to be looked at again...and, a close look in the forums find numerous threads where the _only_ install problem the new user needed to solve was simply getting a good iso, and burn.. Hi all, I would like to conduct a small experience in Portugal regarding openSUSE and geo-caching. For those who don't know what geo-caching is, feel free to take a look at [1]. This is mainly a 'treasure seeking' game for caches which requires pretty much the following: 1) Internet Connection; 2) GPS device (Android phones are cool) 3) GeoCaching client: I personally use C:GEO for Android. My interest was to plant a major cache in a point of interest called 'openSUSE Portugal CACHE'; the contents of this cache are meant to be: a) a pen for geo-cachers to sign the cache-log; b) the cache-log, which is pretty much a piece of paper where people sign their visits; c) some stickers (this requires maintenance, at least weekly as we should leave a few ones and not a large stock); d) maybe some openSUSE media; The cache logs are tracked online (they are public), so everyoen can actually follow it. The results I want to measure are simple, but I would like not to disclose them at the current time; Since we're running a new release, this would be an interesting point. What I need is a large batch of stickers and maybe some media to run this for a few months. I believe this can also be extended to Ambassadors on other countries. We can begin with 5 messages/contents in each social media site. If we find enough people willing to help, maybe we can add a couple more per site. Having the Feature page, the Highlights page and the announcement (under development by Will Stephenson), we can use them to extract the content for the messages, or simply announce the most relevant points described on these wiki pages. We will need to add some screenshots and artwork, probably. If you have other ideas, feel free propose them. The announcement draft will be finish it today, so we have time tomorrow for translations. Max Lin is trying to ping translators. It would be great if we can also translate these messeges. Promo in mother tongues is way more effective. Hi, this is a short summary of where we are and what is still left to do for this release process: Done or in progress * Gold Master declared. * Feeding mirrors with the Gold Master and extra isos * Promo DVDs ordered * Press kit in progress. Will be done (extracted from the Action Plan) * Finish the Highlight page and the Release announcement. * Once the Highlight page and the Release announcement are done (Monday), we will add them to the wiki. We will do this. * We would like to publish this for release the announcement and, if possible, the highlight page, in several languages, so the impact is bigger in places where English is not the mother tongue. On Monday (probably late) we will point translators to these pages in English so they have Tuesday to translate. This is not optimal, but at least it is an improvement. We will have more time in the next release. Max Lin, our team member in Taiwan, will be the link for this task. If any of you want to coordinate this, that would be great. We will be very busy doing other things. * On Monday afternoon we will try to put some effort into the social media promotion of the release. We will discuss with you a plan so we are partially organize on this. Many of you usually do promo through different social media so we want to make sure we know who you are, you have the contens you need to promote openSUSE and we do not miss any relevant channel. It could be nice also to experiment on social media in different languages. It would be very valuable if those of you willing to do promotion on Wednesday and following days help us here, specially in channels like FB or twitter, where many of us can contribute. Any idea that we can include in the planning, prepare on Tuesday (or even before if do not involve this team) and execute it during the Release day and the following days will be more than welcome. There are many many cool ideas we can try. We just want to make sure the ones we all choose are doable, they are coordinated (at least partially) and, very important, we can track them, so we can learn from them. * On Wednesday we will do the actions needed to make everything public, following the Action Plan that is on the wiki. If nothing really unexpected happens, we will have a good Release on Wednesday at 12:00 UTC. [opensuse-project] Beautiful 1-Click Installer

Hi, Google Summer of Code has come to an end, and I am pleased to announce that the new 1-Click Installer is ready for testing by the community. While still requiring some work, it is still quite nifty, and simplifies the installation to a great extent. I will be working on the remaining tasks involved, and it would be awesome if I get feedback and how I could make it better. I welcome all feedback on the installer, and hope to make it even better in the future. I also take this opportunity to thank the entire organisation for the opportunity to work on this project, and my mentors, Cornelius Schumacher and Matt Barringer for guiding me throughout the course of the programme.
