[opensuse-project] openSUSE 12.2 Release follow up
Hi, this is a short summary of where we are and what is still left to do for this release process: Done or in progress * Gold Master declared. * Feeding mirrors with the Gold Master and extra isos * Promo DVDs ordered * Press kit in progress. Will be done (extracted from the Action Plan) * Finish the Highlight page and the Release announcement. * Once the Highlight page and the Release announcement are done (Monday), we will add them to the wiki. We will do this. * We would like to publish this for release the announcement and, if possible, the highlight page, in several languages, so the impact is bigger in places where English is not the mother tongue. On Monday (probably late) we will point translators to these pages in English so they have Tuesday to translate. This is not optimal, but at least it is an improvement. We will have more time in the next release. Max Lin, our team member in Taiwan, will be the link for this task. If any of you want to coordinate this, that would be great. We will be very busy doing other things. * On Monday afternoon we will try to put some effort into the social media promotion of the release. We will discuss with you a plan so we are partially organize on this. Many of you usually do promo through different social media so we want to make sure we know who you are, you have the contens you need to promote openSUSE and we do not miss any relevant channel. It could be nice also to experiment on social media in different languages. It would be very valuable if those of you willing to do promotion on Wednesday and following days help us here, specially in channels like FB or twitter, where many of us can contribute. Any idea that we can include in the planning, prepare on Tuesday (or even before if do not involve this team) and execute it during the Release day and the following days will be more than welcome. There are many many cool ideas we can try. We just want to make sure the ones we all choose are doable, they are coordinated (at least partially) and, very important, we can track them, so we can learn from them. * On Wednesday we will do the actions needed to make everything public, following the Action Plan that is on the wiki. If nothing really unexpected happens, we will have a good Release on Wednesday at 12:00 UTC. I would like to thank the current and former members of openSUSE Team at SUSE (former Boosters) for their work the last few months to get to this point, to SUSE for its support but, above all, to you, that work with passion to make this project possible. Now....let's make some noise. As I am one of the people who has access to the @opensuse twitter account and one of the admins for our two Facebook accounts, let me make some suggestions that will make things easier for us: - While we'll attempt to retweet as much as possible, it is very helpful to also create a list of things we want to say on Twitter. Then pull from the list periodically. We should compile this list by no later than Tuesday evening. If anyone here has suggestions for cool comments about 12.2, let's hear them. - Effective twittering unfortunately means tweeting often. Tweets posted at, for example, 2:00 UTC are less likely to be seen by someone living 12 hours away in another timezone. Therefore, we should have volunteers to manage Twitter in 3 shifts of 8 hours. - Keeping social media admins informed about news articles as they come out will be greatly helpful. We'll post those on Facebook, Twitter, G+ etc. The last time we were well-coordinated on this was during 11.3 release. It was hugely successful with lots of high trending. We managed to be on front page of Digg for several hours as a result. I believe we can be effective once again like the old days. You can schedule (and *auto-schedule*) tweets using HootSuite for free. HootSuite also posts to Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn. For a modest fee (IIRC about $6US / month) you can get analytics and a "team structure". I'll retweet anything coming from @opensuse and anything I see on Google+. I'm not on Facebook, though. Timed release of tweets via a service of some sort is always useful, though we still need an actual list of things we want to say. Nevertheless, nothing beats a human being in this case. Having someone monitor the noise on Twitter and retweeting the masses as well as personalizing based on current noise is a far better experience. We're really only talking about 1 day of activity here. Maybe a second day. After that, we revert back to our normal social media practices, however that sounds. Absolutely. Automatic updates for things like blog post notification, updates and the like are quite useful, but random announcements are essentially spam. The whole point of social media is in the 'social', and if we have someone keeping an eye on some keywords/hashtags and responding that'd be awesome. Do we have banner artwork for the release that we can link to from the forums? We can rotate the 12.2 release banners and the conference banners that we currently have in place - just need the artwork URLs. Good idea. We were just working on some DVD artwork. What size spec do you need for the banner? I'll push this to be made soon today. Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

We can work with pretty much any standard size - the two summit banners we're using are 1000x100 and 866x174. Ok thanks, I'll bring this to the artwork team's attention. I think since half the artwork concept on the banner is already done, doing an actual banner should be a quick one-two.
