Hi, these statements reflect issues that I would like to work on: 1.- 15:50:13 <lupinstein> without it, the money would go to SUSE like the money from Google Summer of Code, but I could be wrong. 2.- 15:50:58 <manugupt1> lupinstein: Last time heard, Jos telling in a mailing list that we do get money.. so thats great.. :) but we need some transparency there.. I believe.. which should be a role for the next board 3.- 15:52:37 <lupinstein> it would be hard for me to give to SUSE, because I am not sure if it would all go to openSUSE. 4.- 15:53:22 <lupinstein> anyway foundation would be a plus for transparency in my opinion. It seems that two topics, transparency and increasing income are linked to the creation of the Foundation. This is a wrong approach to me. They are separate and not neccesarily linked topics. The Foundation is, in any case, the consequence of a wider and more complex process. Having a company like SUSE should allow openSUSE to, in the case a foundation is created, to start it in a very mature and susteinable state. We are far from there at this point. We can and should increase transparency in the economic area and we have to find ways for the project to become economically susteinable, so creating a Foundation could be a topic to discuss because it has a clear mid term future. 5.- 16:09:54 <tittiatcoke> The KDE area didn't loose any members to open-slx, but the loss was more due to the reorganization of the boosters team open-slx is an example of the opportunities openSUSE has to become "business friendly" Open Source Press is another example. Transforming openSUSE into a business friendly ecosystem will be a major topic in the coming new action plan. What do you think? We are very happy to inform you that next year’s openSUSE Conference (oSC13), the yearly get together of our community, will happen in July in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki, Greece. oSC13 will bring together a wide variety of Free and Open Source (FOSS) contributors to collaborate on one of the major Linux distribution projects. In exciting talks, workshops and social events our community will bring alive our motto “Have a lot of fun”. [opensuse-project] openSUSE presence at SUSECon 2013?

Hi, In case you were not aware, SUSE has announced that SUSECon 2013 will be held in November 2013 around Orlando (Florida, USA). If you want more details, see: https://www.suse.com/company/press/2012/11/suse-announces-location-and-date… In 2012, we organized an openSUSE Summit after SUSECon: SUSE sponsored us by providing the venue (and some help with logistics), so we were able to focus on the content and on the on-site organization during the event itself. Thanks again to Bryen and Alan who lead that effort! Now, SUSE is offering us to do something similar in 2013. Of course, we'd need to move fast if we want to do that (as the venue needs to be secured for additional days). There have been people suggesting that we should also have a booth during SUSECon, or even suggesting that our openSUSE presence should happen during SUSECon (as part of it?) to decrease the amount of work needed for the organization. Obviously, there's the "will it conflict with the openSUSE conference?" question :-) We'll have some news about the conference in the next few days, but the short summary is that there should be more time between the two events than this year, so it should go much better from that perspective. So, please reply to this thread, or directly to the board, or to me, with your thoughts. This will also be a topic we'll discuss next week, in the next project meeting. And ideally, we'll be able to tell SUSE if we want to do something, and if yes, what. I think there is some merit in your ideas for a more 'business-orientated' approach, targeting SME's and turning our focus to being the 'ideal' linux distribution for SME's to use and contribute back to. I think it's a bold and ambitious target, and as my own involvement in openSUSE originated from use in an SME, I certainly can't argue that we aren't already capable in that area. Deciding on that as our focus could help provide the refinement and polish to really achieve something in this space, and would certainly make my answer shorter when I'm at conferences and people endlessly ask me "Why should I use openSUSE?" But 'business' is boring, I feel we'd need to be careful not to lose our unique "Have a lot of fun" vibe if we (the community) decide to head in that direction. The concerns about the economic side of things already is setting of alarm bells for me, which we'd have to resolve before I'd consider such a direction viable. I personally think our greatest strength as a project and distribution is the fact we embrace 'Choice' The fact we explicitly don't define how you're meant to use openSUSE is a strength - Whether you're a user who wants a server, a KDE workstation, a GNOME workstation, an appliance, a tablet, a toaster, we build, we distribute, you decide But we're not like other "do whatever you want" distros like Debian. While we do take the current and best from upstream and dump it all on our users to play with, we have tools like YaST (and SUSE give us Studio) which exist to help make that decision and deployment process easier. We're the distro where a relative novice can turn up and say "I want my box to be a desktop and a webserver and a mailserver and a VOIP server all at once" and it's half a dozen button clicks away instead of a month digging through documentation and configuration files. I think we don't do a good enough job at getting that message out to people, and I sometimes think we forget it ourselves, occasionally thinking we're making it easier for our users by taking choices away from them, rather than instead making it easier for them to make those choices. To give a specific example, revamping the desktop selection screen with screenshots and better descriptions to make it easier for a novice user to make an informed choice between GNOME and KDE is something I'd really like to see. I'm not sure my vision of 'choice' necessarily is enough to be a goal in-of-itself, nor do I think it is mutually exclusive to other proposed goal, whether that be a move to becoming 'business-orientated' or something else. I do think we could do with deciding on our direction, I just think we need to keep our strengths in choice and having fun at the same time, and do a better job of marketing all of it to the outside world. > What aspects of SUSE work in openSUSE can we improve in 2013? Apparently that list is sacrosanct with traditions established before man discovered fire and is not open to change. The netiquette as I posted it preserves its centuries long traditions, but allows the specialists lists to continue as they've been doing the last few years. Wallpaper Contest Guidelines This is an official announcement of the wallpaper contest for openSUSE 12.3. Submissions are made to artwork team's flickr page http://www.flickr.com/groups/opensuse-artwork/ The format can be any image style you would like. Created with GIMP or Inkscape, or an original photo. They can all be considered. If the submission is not made in the Flickr page, it cannot be counted. If you don't have a Flickr page, ask any of our team members to help you submit your image. Given the amount of submissions so far this year(152 images so far), the artwork team will work on the selection of images in the following way. Our team members will be in charge of selecting the final 10 images for the selection of the rest of the community. We will present the 10 finalist images. Each voting member form our team will receive 10 points. These 10 points will be distributed across the images that such member selects as his/her best ones. You only have 10 points and nothing more, and you will run out of points after distributing those points across different images. If you are a contributor the artwork team and also the contest images, you cannot vote for yourself. The idea being to go out find other possible contributors to the team and there is no feeling that we pushing only for our own interests. To also show fairness to those who may be trying to be part of our team. For example Image 1: 3 pts Image 2: 5 pts Image 3: 2 pts TOTAL: 10 pts In order to vote you have to comment under the image in question on Flickr. You will add the comment saying: User X Comment: +1, +2, +5, etc We will be in charge also of counting the results. If you decide to change your mind about a particular image and would like to withdraw your points, you can do so by deleting the comment you made on a particular image. The excitement has been building for weeks and now the most important phase of the openSUSE Board elections begins today -- Election Time! Two seats are open for election by members of the openSUSE Project. The first seat is vacated by Henne Vogelsang who has completed his two-term limit. The second seat is currently held by Manu Gupta, appointed to fill in for Peter Linnel who stepped down in August of 2012. Both seats are for a two-year term that begins in January 2013 and ends in January 2015. How to Vote: If you are a current member of the openSUSE Project, you will soon receive an email with instructions on how to vote via openSUSE Connect polling system. You must be a member in good standing on or before 27 November 2012. If you have not yet received an email within the next 24 hours, please contact the Election Officials committee at election-officials(a)opensuse.org. Each eligible voter will be given two votes to cast, one for each seat to be elected in this cycle. Voting begins today and concludes at 23:00 UTC on 16 December 2012. [opensuse-project] SUSE-openSUSE relation: overview about financial decision processes

Hi, as I explained in a previous mail, in the past, besides the former Boosters team, there were other SUSE employees working full time in openSUSE with different roles. Now, everybody that works full time in openSUSE is concentrated in a single team, the openSUSE Team at SUSE, that is part of the R&D and Communities department. The above strategy has also been supported from the financial point of view. The economic decisions from SUSE that directly affects openSUSE have also being moved to this department. This move will take some time to consolidate but it is on its way. As I also wrote before, we are working at SUSE on our future actions we will execute as company to support the project/community. Some of those actions have to do with the relation we would like to develop with openSUSE from the financial perspective. We will open a discussion with the Board, through our Chairman, Vincent Untz, about processes to be followed in economic topics. I would like to advance "the framework" in this relevant moment, the Board elections. Until now, most (almost all) of the decision logic on financial matters was placed over SUSE's shoulders. We will propose some measures to transfer part of that logic step by step into the community. This process will be associated to the following concepts: * Agreements: we want to go through this process in agreement with the community. * Transparency: all the processes and decisions have to be done in a transparent way not just toward the community but toward SUSE and other possible sponsors. This mean that budgeting / reporting is a necessary requirement attached to this process. * Scalability: in order for this process to scale, it is necessary that all the financial procedures within the community have the Board as the final and starting point, so our relation with the community in this matter, in the same way that for other sponsors in the future, is routed through them. We understand that it is up to the community to define the relation between the Board and those who will have relation or will manage the economic resources, like the Travel Support Program, Ambassadors, Program etc. Until now, this relation has been directly established with SUSE. We also believe that this relation between Board and executors will be more efficient if it is simple, clear and have trust as an important ingredient. During the next months we have, at least, the following challenges to face from the financial point of view: * The Travel Support Program 2013 * The new Ambassadors Program * A new model for supporting our action in events * Hackathons We would like to encourage the new Board to work with us, facing those challenges together. We will propose that this process is complemented with a definition of the relation between the Board and those who are going to execute these actions. So, in summary, our relation with openSUSE in the financial area, will be routed through the Board step by step, so we all can learn with little pressure and clear direction. Hi All I would like to stand up for the board elections this year. My Primary Goals during this time : 1. Organizing Programs like GSoC and other programs that encourage new contributors to come-in 2. Knowing where all the funds come from and into. Pretty much all that comes to us is from SUSE. But there are donations from the community during oSC's which are totally unaccounted for. I believe before a foundation comes into place, the Board should be able to keep a track of whatever little funds that come from other sources should be accountable to the community. 3. Correspondence - The Board should have good correspondence with the community. [opensuse-project] Design Ideas 12.3 Results

These are the results from the open question asked to the list about the design ideas or themes that will guide our thoughts in choosing artwork for openSUSE 12.3. The idea is to help our contributors and voters to make choices that match a style guide. That way, the chosen artwork will achieve a sense of unity. The themes provided could also make it into the future as a long lasting definition of openSUSE's artwork. If these themes were to be placed together we get something like this: 1. Simplicity 2. Clarity 3. Impact/Memorable 4. Unity Other thoughts included the idea of being new and contemporary, which can be achieved easily by following the guidelines above. Keep in mind also that there are things that simply escape the arm of our artwork. A designer we tend to push the envelope into areas that likely are not achievable on software. Let's keep this in mind. Please now, if you can, define these concepts in your own words. That way we can get more understanding from each person about these design themes. Simplicity can mean many things for different people, so the more we acquire a strong concept of these themes, the easier it will get for selection.
