[opensuse-project] Request to change MS6 to Beta

This is a request for changing the name of the MS6 release to Beta. The Testing Core Team (TCT) discussed the general problem of testing of new releases. With openQA, the probability that Factory iso's will boot and install is greatly increased; however, with the current system, many users do not start testing until RC1 is ready. As a result, there is very little time for detecting and fixing the bugs that will only be seen with a workload that is diverse. Such early testing will be particularly important for 12.1. Not only have we regularized the release schedule and naming scheme and need to follow through with a high-quality product, but we are behind due to the early build problems. The TCT considered several possible changes to entice earlier and broader testing. The schedule does not have much flexibility to increase the time between the RC1 and GM releases, thus we probably need to indulge in some 'social engineering' to get earlier testing. We could change from 6 Milestone and 2 RC releases to 5 and 3, respectively, without tampering with the total time. Alternatively, we could rename from MS6 to Beta. The TCT favors the latter option. It might mislead the users/testers a little regarding the quality of the offering, but we don't think calling MS6 "Beta" is misleading. By most definitions, Beta means feature-complete and free of huge bugs - we should be able to get that with MS6. A beta release should attract more users. In addition, many of us start full-time usage with MS5 or MS6, thus we know it to be usable for many people. Although I have been an openSUSE and SuSE user since 6.3, I have only been involved with testing the pre-releases since 11.1, and I only remember the milestone/rc days. If you accept that a "beta" version is feature-complete and free of huge bugs, then MS5 or MS6 match those criteria; however, I would be hard pressed to categorize MS1 or MS2 as alpha. I'm not sure how the measure the success of this change. The only things that count are the number and severity of the bugs in the final release. I certainly want to avoid another case like 11.3 GM where all networking was broken by two different critical bugs. I am not trained in psychology, and I'm not sure what will attract testing; however, I certainly think that the publicity surrounding the release of the "one-and-only" Beta version will have more news impact than the "sixth-of-six" Milestones will; however, it is clear that we need to hit other news outlets than those within the traditional openSUSE family. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Entomologist UI Changes - Weekly Report #6

Hi Everyone, You can find my weekly report at [0] as usual or it is included in plain text below. This week is the start of a new phase in my project and represents the final completion of the "tabbed interface" changes I had included in my plan. I'm happy that I'm making progress :). --------Weekly Report Text------ This week has been a bit productive but there still isn't that much to show for the work I have done as it's primarily related to drag and drop in the TODO list. The start of the week was spent bolstering the code I had worked on for the tabbed interface and ensuring that I caught as many bugs as I could find. The later part of the week has been focused on the TODO list. The idea behind the TODO list is a way to categorize bugs with your own scheme and then assign them to certain completion dates. This could then be used to track roadmaps etc and over time I plan to add cloud integration so that they can be synced with Google Calendar etc. The main focus right now is getting it to work within the context of entomologist and once that is done focus on the cloud integration aspect. So far the drag and drop doesn't work but it's getting there and once it is complete I will tidy the code and the TODO list as a first iteration should be finished (since drag and drop being completed is the same as finishing most of the functionality). What am I going to do next week?: - Finish the first iteration. - Move forwards with the second iteration and implement prefpanes for each list (with options like name,date etc.) - Start Cloud integration (If there's time left at the end of the week!). I need to take some time to try and document what I've done too which would involve making comments I've written better and maybe putting together a small "Hackers Guide to Entomologist". If I have time left over I will definitely do this work before the end of the Summer.
