[opensuse-project] Maintenance of the upcoming openSUSE 11.2

Hi openSUSE community, the upcoming openSUSE 11.2 is the first release of openSUSE which will be coordinated by the openSUSE community when it comes to the update process. In the past the maintenance team was working in the background and provided you with the newest and best updates. The update decision was a completely internal process. Now we will make it more transparent and let the whole community participate. The future is: The community will do updates for openSUSE in self-responsibility. The update process will be coordinated by the new openSUSE maintenance team. At the moment it consists of 5 people, 2 SUSE employees and 3 openSUSE community members. Every user can send an update request now to this team. This team will decide over the requests and coordinates the whole updates progress (plan the release time according to the severity, interact with the package maintainer, coordinate QA testing, ...) based on a new update policy. It guarantees the best supply with updates. Only maintenance (tagged as recommended, optional, YOU) updates are affected by this change. Security updates will be provided on the old and approved way by the SUSE security team. This is the fastest and established way to react on security problems. Everybody can enjoy and help to improve openSUSE and influence the development. There is a lot of work in the whole update process. So enjoy! Every openSUSE user can help to improve our distribution. You can help e.g. in: - notify interesting bugs that should be fixed by a maintenance update - work as a QA tester and check testing updates to improve the quality and give feedback - help us to create a new maintenance policy - work in the maintenance team - work as a package maintainer and provide the updates - work as a junior maintainer and learn to build packages and provide minor fixes - ... [opensuse-project] openSUSE 11.2 Final Release Candidate

This is it folks! We're almost there for openSUSE 11.2. Time to grab the final 11.2 release candidate and shake out any remaining bugs to get the lizard ready for release. This release includes an updated kernel, Samba, Firefox, and more. This release should be almost ready for the gold master stamp, but there's still time to shake out remaining bugs. This release should not be deployed on production systems, but should be ready for early adopters and contributors who want to help with testing and development of 11.2. **Changes Since openSUSE 11.2 RC 1** Release Candidate 2 includes a few new packages, and several of the "most annoying bugs" in RC 1 have been fixed for this release. New packages include: * Linux kernel 2.6.31.5 * SeaMonkey 2.0 * Firefox 3.5.4 * Samba 3.4.2 * xorg-x11-server 1.6.5 A more complete list can be found on the wiki[1] and an updated list of Factory packages can be found on DistroWatch[2]. 11.2 is looking fantastic. Want screenshots? We've got 'em! Check out the shots here[3], and/or add your own. **Most Annoying Bugs** As this is a release candidate, we're still shaking the release out for major bugs. However, at this point in the cycle, we're almost ready to call 11.2 RC 2 production ready. We do know of one bug worth noting, however: The Net ISO images will call the factory repository. The URL for repositories needs to be changed from /factory/repo/oss to /factory-snapshot/repo/oss manually. You can find more on adding repositories on the openSUSE wiki[4]. If any major new bugs do crop up, they will be listed on the openSUSE wiki[5]. **Testing! Testing! Testing!** As you can see, 11.2 RC2 does have a few bugs that we know about -- but there may be more lurking somewhere in the release that haven't been found yet. If you want to make sure 11.2 final is free of Most Annoying Bugs, we'll need your help finding, reporting, and fixing those hidden bugs. To learn more about testing openSUSE, visit the Testing[6] pages on the openSUSE wiki. To follow the testing and development process, we suggest that you subscribe to the openSUSE-Factory mailing list, and join the #openSUSE- Factory channel on Freenode to discuss openSUSE development. **Get Release Candidate 2 Today!** What are you waiting for? Grab the milestone release today! Downloads are available at software.opensuse.org/developer/[7] now. Note, if you need to try the live CD on a machine with no CD-ROM drive, you can copy it to a USB key with the following command: dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M Replace "image.iso" with the name of the ISO image that you have downloaded, and replace "sdX" with the actual device name of your USB drive. Be careful! This will erase the target device, so make sure you have the correct device name and have any vital data backed up! The final release for 11.2 is scheduled to be released on November 12, 2009. See the detailed roadmap on the on the wiki[8]. We're at the home stretch. Community, Election Committee, I herewith announce my candidacy for Board Member of the openSUSE Community Board. My name is Rupert, I'm 28 and I'm currently on the home stretch of studying business administration and electrical engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology. I have been involved with the openSUSE Project for several years. I started using Linux with the release of SUSE Linux 9.1 and became an active contributor to the Project during my Internship in Product Management at Novell/SUSE in 2007/2008. In January 2008, I have been approved as an official openSUSE member. As an employee and afterwards as a community volunteer, I served as the Project Manager of the openSUSE forums merge and contributed as a moderator to the openSUSE community until May 2009. As a Workstudent for Community Architecture, I worked on several forums-internal projects and contributed to the openSUSE Weekly Newsletter in 2008/2009. Currently I'm involved in the efforts to come up with a sufficient usability concept for the openSUSE Wiki in co-work with the Wiki- and Booster Teams. My contributions to the openSUSE Project so far imho reflect clearly that I'm an organizing and coordinating kind of person and that I'm focused on the social components of building and growing an Open-Source Community. From my perspective, having a strong marketing focus and thus providing sufficient support- and documentation resources to the end user is just as important to the success of the openSUSE Project as contributing to the distribution in a developing capacity actually is. And, more than usual, that is dependant on the country where you want to position the project. Another thing that comes to my mind is: What makes a real openSUSE sub project? Sascha founded the Medical sub project, there is the Edu sub project, I am dreaming of a small business sub project, there is an audio sub project and so on. Do we want some guidelines or frame under which we position such sub projects? Thoughts? Could we improve this process in the future please. The above announcement doesn't have a fixed date, when stuff will get removed from OBS. So that means "immediately" apparently. So repo people didn't have time to migrate their 10.3 repos if they are still needed. An earlier announcement that it would happen at some point doesn't count as excuse I think. The next thing is that 10.3 gets still security updates until oct 31st according to another post. So could that be a bit better coordinated the next time and with a bit more time to prepare such a removal? Hi, my lizards.o.o is aggregated on http://planetkde.org via the link http://lizards.opensuse.org/author/kfreitag/feed/rss/ That worked ok in the past. However my last blog now appears since more than two days on top of planetkde and does not scroll away. That produces a painful impression, but I have no idea what to do. Who is in charge with Lizards? Can somebody help? [opensuse-project] Junior Jobs

Hi, lately we formulated concept of openSUSE Junior Jobs[1]. Maintainers of openSUSE packages can choose some of theirs easy bugs and mark them as Junior Jobs. Then anybody from community can volunteer and fix these issues. These tasks will be easily fixable and their purpose is to let people learn how to contribute and to create some easy task so anybody can join and start participating.
