[opensuse-translation] l10n process control

Hi there, I am one of the l10n contributor here since SLP 9.3, and my continuous task is to push translations to the build before release ... in short: there should be no English messages if I use openSUSE in my local. But you know... something always comes up and I felt guilty and helpless. So I have tried to figure out a process and good control points: * sync1: generate the pot file from source and compare with the pot files in the l10n svn * sync2: compare the po files against the generated pot files * sync3: compare the language po file in the factory source Here is the small figure about the whole process: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2556976/yastomatic.png And here is the web interface: language view: http://yastomatic.npsh.hu/language_dashboard.html package view: http://yastomatic.npsh.hu/package_dashboard.html I am not a developer and not a real translator, just a community member, but I have found two guys who helped me to turn this vision to reality, so I would like to thank to István Nyitrai (sianis) and András Máté (amate) for their help. Everything is just started and we test it on yast only, but the framework is flexible to extend it other components later. So we have several ideas how can we improve this, but at this point I would like to know yours... [opensuse-translation] Number of messages in statistics

Hi, When I look at the statistics for openSUSE translations for trunk on http://i18n.opensuse.org/stats/trunk/toplist.php the total number of messages is different for the different languages. The numbers that appear most are 35007 and 34984. I wonder what is the right number. As far as I know, the last number is the right one, because all my .po files are generated from the .pot files. -- fr.gr. The handling of translation related bug reports is often rather time-consuming. I'm wondering how we could improve it. I'll describe and comment how it works today. Bugs filed with component "translations" are by default assigned to me (ke -@- novell.com) Then I must find the translator who can actually fix it. That's fine, but does not scale that good any longer. We now have more translations and translators, more languages, and, happily, more users who run localized desktops. In the past, I simply searched through lcn/50-etc/translators and assigned the bug accordingly. The first step to improve the workflow is to cleanup the translators file (I'll attach it). I'd like all our team coordinators to check whether team listings are fine. I think it would work the best, if the team coordinator would come first. With the switch to Berlios, the account names are ambiguous ;) We need them both, the Berlios account name and the one at Bugzilla.novell.com. Often, they are the same, though. I think it would work if we'd simply add the Bugziall account name at the end of every line, that's after the mail address: keichwa Karl Eichwalder <ke =at= novell.com> keichwa In the long run, the default bug assignment should be changed from ke -@- novell.com to a mailinglist, where others could subscribe themselves and help with bug assignment. [opensuse-translation] Bug report against webyast files

Hi all, I am translating webyast files and I have noted that they contain incomplete phrases, so I am going to open bug reports against them, as Karl suggested. Should I open a report for each file containing incomplete phrases? or is it sufficient to open a single report against all files? Is there some page that I can link to remark that incomplete phrases are not allowed? [opensuse-translation] Inconsistencies in files in project opensuse-i18n

Hi, Recently updated .pot files appeared in trunk webyast. However updated (merged) .po files did not appear. So I tried to do the merging myself. Because doing it all by hand did not seem smart, so I designed a script to do that, also for yast and lcn. I assumed that by checking the POT-Creation-Date in the .pot and the corresponding .po file would give me an indication whether to use msgmerge or leave things alone. However I found .pot files without a POT-Creation-Date line. I also found a file in the .../nl/po/ directory which did not end on .nl.po but only on .po Will this be improved or do we have to work with these inconsistencies? -- fr.gr. Hi folks, I need your help again :) This time it's for the new Planet openSUSE: http://planet.opensuse.org As you can see, it aggregates blog feeds for a few languages, and I would need to have translations of its interface in the following languages: * Portuguese * Polish * Japanese (Javier already sent me a translation for Spanish :)) Note that I really don't need translations in other languages, as we currently don't aggregate blog posts in other languages as the ones above (well, except English and German, but I already made the latter myself ;)). It's implemented with gettext, and the instructions are here: http://gitorious.org/opensuse/planet-opensuse/blobs/master/README.L10N There are just a few strings to localise, which you can preview here: http://gitorious.org/opensuse/planet- opensuse/blobs/master/locale/planetsuse.pot Note that _DATE_FORMAT_ is a bit special :) It is supposed to hold the preferred way of displaying "day, month and year" in your language, with strftime placeholders, e.g. "%d. %B %Y" for German (%d is the day of the month as a number, %B is the name of the month in your language, and %Y is the year). [opensuse-translation] i18n developer recomendations

Hail to you, noble translators! =) Not that much time ago I faced an irritating thing in yast_webclient_software.po at following lines: "Repository will be %s." "Autorefresh will be %s." "Keep packages option will be %s." This %s is meant to be replaced with "enabled" or "disabled", but the problem is that in each line russian translation for those words will have a separate (unique) form, so that three lines make three different forms of translation. That's the unsolvable-by-translator thing, cause the developer who wrote this is unaware of other languages specific rules (some time ago we already faced this problem with numbers and placeholders for software.opensuse.org) For example, KDE project has a bunch of rules for developers about what they can and can not push to translation: the main part there is "You cannot make grammar suggestions and guesses". I find this very useful =) What do you think of creating some rules of that kind for openSUSE project (maybe, just accepting KDE ones, cause they are reasonable and work for years), so that all translators can use them as a reference when filing a bug against such po-files? Cause at the moment I feel really uncomfortable and not sure about reporting such an issue to Bugzilla, since there's nothing wrong with the software or the file itself, it is just untranslatable for russian language. Hello, I've recently submitted a "Browse ISO" ServiceMenu to kio_iso, which is in K:K:F:D. My sr was accepted, however it's translated into few languages. So I'm asking for your help: all you have to do is translate "Browse ISO" into your language. You may branch krusader and submit the translation yourself.
